Is SIBO the Cause of Your Fibro or FLC Syndrome?

By Dr. Greg Fors, DC, Board-certified Neurologist Do your exams and conventional lab tests keep coming back normal? Yet you suffer with chronic symptoms, you ache all over, at times with physical and mental fatigue. You have mood issues and brain fog and you’re noticing multiple health issues especially digestive problems. You possibly have been given the worthless diagnosis of fibromyalgia and then handed a prescription for Cymbalta or a Lyrica. When your doctor tells you have fibromyalgia he or she is just telling you in Latin what you told them in English, Fibro for tissues, mya for muscles and -algia for hurt all over. A diagnosis of fibromyalgia and telling you that your nerves are hyperactive brings you no closer to finding out the underlying cause and correction of your health problems, and whatever you call it, there are no drugs that can heal this devastating syndrome. You have to get to the underlying cause and correct it with proper dietary and nutritional intervention. The primary underlying cause of these achy and fatigued symptoms is usually related to chronic systemic inflammation CSI. Because 70% of your immune system resides within your gastrointestinal tract lining, your G.I. tract plays a major role in this body wide inflammation. Research is showing that an imbalance or overgrowth of small intestine bacteria, called SIBO, is a major contributing factor to CSI and FLC syndrome. SIBO is best understood as ‘an over abundance of non-acute non-infectious GI microorganisms and/or a lack of beneficial bacteria, adversely affecting the human host’. SIBO is also understood to be an underlying cause of many functional digestive disorders such as: GERD, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and colitis. Some of the bacteria found in SIBO can produce toxins that damage the lining of the small intestine causing you multiple G.I. symptoms. This damage can also prevent your small intestine from absorbing the nutrients you need leading to multiple health issues as found in FLC syndrome. Furthermore, these toxins can damage the “glue” that holds the intestinal cells to each other leading to what has been called and “Leaky Gut Syndrome”. With leaky gut foreign molecules like toxins, microbes, undigested food particles, can escape from your small intestines. With 70% of your immune system in your G.I. lining it has ample opportunity to mark these “foreign invaders" as pathogens and attacks them. This immune response will cause systemic inflammation leading to FLC syndrome. This leaking through of undigested foods particles that your immune system reacts to is also a primary cause of food allergy and food sensitivity reactions. The list of symptoms caused by food allergies and food sensitivities is endless but most of them add up to “feeling like crap” or FLC syndrome. There are some basic signs of SIBO: gas, bloating, abdominal pain or cramping, diarrhea or constipation, irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease, G.I. food intolerances (e.g. gluten, casein, lactose, and fructose), malabsorption with vitamins and minerals deficiencies, fat malabsorption, and chronic illnesses such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, neuromuscular disorders and autoimmune diseases. If you have any of the above symptoms or chronic pain and fatigue and SIBO has not been found, it may be that no one has been looking for it! It is easy enough to find, if you take a good history and run the proper laboratory tests, such as Genova Diagnostics urinary organic acid profile with SIBO markers and Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis (CDSA). Tired of taking drugs for your Fibro or FLC Syndrome with all their side effects? Confused because you have been told your tests are normal but all your symptoms tell you different? If you answered yes then it is vital that you attend one of my up FREE upcoming seminars. I will explain the role SIBO plays in your health, how it is diagnosed, how it can be corrected and how you can reinvent your life, naturally. Join me, Dr. Greg Fors at 6:30 PM Wednesday, May 14 or Monday, May 19 at the Pain and Brain Healing Center in Blaine. Seating is limited. NAUTICAL RACES • In 1851 Prince Albert hosted the Great London Exhibition to showcase technological advances. In conjunction, Queen Victoria invited all nations to participate in the annual 53-mile regatta around the Isle of Wight. Fifteen British vessels entered, plus one American boat. • The owner of the American boat, John Stevens, was the first commodore of the New York Yacht Club, and his boat was designed by engineer George Steers, who made his living designing sleek, quick boats. It won by a wide margin. Legend has it that when the Queen asked, “Who has won?” and was told who it was, she replied, “And who is second?” only to be told, “Your Majesty, there is no second.” It was some time before the second place winner showed up. • The trophy, made of 134 ounces of silver, was called the ‘One Hundred Guinea Cup’ because that’s how much it cost. It was awarded to Stevens and his crew. He donated the trophy to the New York Yacht Club in 1857 with the stipulation that it be awarded to the winner of international boat races held once every three years, in order to stimulate competition between countries. • The trophy and the race were named after Stevens’ boat, and a race was born. What was the name of the ship, now the name of a famous yacht race? Answer at the bottom of the next page. A GOOD LOSER • As a young man in Glasgow, Scotland, Thomas helped his parents run their small grocery store. He spent a few years living in the U.S. where his work in a New York City grocery store introduced him to the effectiveness of publicity events and advertising. (continued next page) • Later Thomas returned to Glasgow and opened his own store, which was so successful that he kept opening more. He engaged in innovative marketing techniques including staging parades and hiring brass bands. By 1888 he owned over 300 stores. • Around the time Thomas opened his 300th grocery store, the price of tea began to

fall, and his middle-class customers began drinking more of it. Spotting an opportunity, Thomas opened a tea trading office and established wholesale distribution channels that allowed working-class people to be able to easily afford tea. He bought his tea in such large amounts that he was able to undercut competitor’s prices. • This was such a successful venture that he began to invest in tea plantations. In Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), coffee plantation owners had recently suffered a coffee blight that ruined their crop, so Thomas convinced them to plant tea instead. • In a time when most tea was sold by the pound, Thomas pioneered selling it packaged in individual bags. • Thomas’ hobby was yachting, and he entered the America’s Cup yacht race five times, hoping to bring the trophy home to Britain. He lost every time, but the publicity he got from being ‘the world’s best loser’ caused tea sales to soar. Today, Thomas’ last name is synonymous with tea. What’s his name? Answer below. ANSWERS The new race was called the America’s Cup, after the first boat to win it, the AmericA. And the grocery store merchant who lost that race often but became famous for his tea was named Thomas Lipton. Today, Lipton products are available in over 110 countries worldwide.

We Put A Style in Every Cut leave with a total finished look

Looking for a Pet ? Hi, my name is Skye

I'm only 10 months old, have had all my shots, have been neutered and yes, I know, I'm really cute. I am house trained, have a lot of toys that I recognize and love to tug and fetch. Lots of doggie care stuff too. I'm smart and my owners take good care of me. They've taught me well; however, things just aren't the best fit with their lifestyle and I have a lot of energy, love to play and crave attention. They are looking for someone that has more time and energy, and who really needs a loving companion. They aren't just going to hand me over to anyone, in fact, there is a re-homing sincerity fee. You will have to convince them that you can be a good companion for me too. Call 763-218-0033 ask for Skye

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles

Break Out the Steak For years we’ve been told to focus on plant-based proteins (beans, for example) rather than meats and cheeses from animal-based proteins. Now all that may change -- depending on our age. Two studies, released within a week of each other, concur: In middle age, a high-protein diet makes us four times more likely to die of cancer, especially animal proteins like cheese, meat and milk, which increases overall deaths. Yet after age 65, an increase in protein is healthy. One study, reported in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, suggests that as we age, we don’t absorb protein like we used to. This lack of protein can lead to a decline in cognitive abilities, as well as how we function in activities of daily living. Researchers studied the diets of over 1,000 seniors with an average age of 67, looking at their intake of plant versus animal protein, and queried them again seven years later. Men with the highest animal protein had a 39 percent lower chance of functional decline. Scientists didn’t see similar results in those who had a majority of plant-based protein in their diets. The other study, in the journal Cell Metabolism, took a closer look at the physics of why protein goes from being bad for us to being good. The growth hormone IGF-I drops off after age 65, and we can become frail with muscle loss without an increase in protein to offset what we’re not processing. Your best bet: Go to your doctor and ask for a referral to a nutritionist. In the week before you go to your appointment, write down everything you eat to give the nutritionist a baseline of your current food choices. Ask whether, given the two studies, you should make any adjustments in your diet. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible.

“I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” -- Mark Twain

● One might think that an event as momentous as the Wright Brothers’ first successful airplane flight in 1903 would have received widespread coverage in the media. One would be wrong. The only newspaper to carry an account of the historic flight was the Virginian Pilot, based in Norfolk. ****************** Thoughts for the Day: "I and the public know. What all schoolchildren learn. Those to whom evil is done. Do evil in return." -- W.H. Auden

● The next time you’re drizzling honey on your biscuit, consider this tidbit: Bees must visit up to 2 million flowers just to produce a single pound of the sweetener.

● The sex organ of a male spider can be found at the end of one of its legs.

● The first pocket calculator was introduced by Texas Instruments in 1961, intended originally for use by the Air Force. Weighing 10 ounces and being only slightly larger than a pack of cigarettes, the company claimed that it could perform the same calculations as a computer 150 times its size.

● Those who study such things say that a lion and a leopard can successfully interbreed. The resulting offspring is called a leopon.

● It was noted Democratic politician Adlai Stevenson who made the following sage observation: “In America, anybody can be president. That’s one of the risks you take.”

● You almost certainly have a Social Security number, but did you ever wonder what the numbers mean? The first three numbers indicate what part of the country you were in when you applied (or when your parents applied for you), the next two numbers are a code indicating the year of your application, and the last four numbers are considered to be your citizen's number.

● In a single year, your heart circulates about a million gallons of blood.

● Even cows have best friends, and they will spend most of their time together.

● From ancient times in China up until the 19th century, the upper classes considered very long fingernails to be beautiful and a mark of distinction, indicating that one with such long nails never had to perform manual labor. Cracking was a problem with these long nails, though, as they sometimes were grown in excess of 2 inches long. To combat the problem, the ruling classes would wear special gold and silver covers on their nails.

● Sharks have existed for 50 million years longer than trees.

● Unlike humans, birds see everything in focus all the time.

On April 23, 1838, the first steamboat to cross the Atlantic Ocean from England to America arrived in New York City. Come along with Tidbits as we remember the contribution made by steamships. SIRIUS vs GREAT WESTERN • The SS Great Western was the first paddle-wheel steamship built with the intention of crossing the Atlantic, and it was the largest passenger ship in the world at the time. Built in Bristol, England, it was launched on March 31, 1838, whereupon a fire broke out in the engine room. Damage was minimal, but fifty passengers cancelled their bookings, leaving only seven passengers to make the trip. • Taking advantage of the delay, rival steamship Sirius embarked for New York, keen on beating the Great Western across the ocean. The Sirius left on April 4, followed by the Great Western on April 8. Even with the start, the Sirius beat the Great Western by only a single day, arriving on April 23. • The average speed of the Sirius was 8.03 knots (14.87 km/h) but the Great Western made the trip at 8.66 knots (16.04 km/h). The Great Western went on to make 45 ocean crossings in the next eight years, averaging 16 days west to New York and 13 days going back to Britain, in a day when the journey usually took 40 days on a sail-powered boat.
