Fixing Your Chronic Pain and Fatigue Once and For All By Dr. Greg Fors Far too many people continue to suffer unnecessarily with their chronic pain, stiffness and fatigue! With previous articles in Tidbits, I have examined the many underlying metabolic issues connected with this. No matter what your diagnosis; fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, myofascial pain syndrome, autoimmune disorder, or chronic arthritis, there is always an underlying metabolic issue that can be discovered and fixed to restore your health. Let me be very clear, chronic pain and fatigue is not a condition that is fixed by drug therapy, many times drugs only make the problem worse with their side effects. For example, you go to a conventional medical facility complaining of chronic muscle pain, stiffness, and fatigue, you probably walk away with a diagnosis of fibromyalgia and a drug prescription. Review this common scenario: you talk to the doctor and complain that your muscles and tissues are painful, are then told you have fibromyalgia, which is just Latin for your muscles and tissues are painful, you are told nothing about the real cause of your symptoms. You are then given drugs, most often Lyrica or Cymbalta which only change your brains perception of your symptoms. This does doing nothing to heal your condition, thus leaving the underlying destructive issues to continue this cycle of more pain, clinic visits, disease and drug dependency for the rest of your life. The pharmaceutical and health industry thrives on this, what do you get? I try to get my patients and the public to realize that you need to take a 4R approach: Remove, Replenish, Restore and Repair. Remove any issues identified with in-depth laboratory and physical examination that are causing your body harm. For example, issues such as gastrointestinal microbe imbalances, toxic metals or chemicals, hormonal imbalances, specific vitamin/mineral deficiencies, myofascial trigger points and muscular imbalances. Then, Restore any imbalances and Replenish any deficiencies in the body. This second R involves dietary changes and nutritional support based on your laboratory tests. Finally, corrective care must be given on an ongoing basis to help stimulate the body to move towards Repair. For example: myofascial therapies, acupuncture, and biofeedback for stress reduction. I’ve written about a Functional Medicine approach to chronic health issues many times; however, it may be of more benefit to hear it from an individual who utilized this process to heal his chronic pain and fatigue:

Following is a testimony to this approach: “I spent 25 years and $250,000 trying to solve my chronic pain. Now, you can start solving your misery free! My name is Jay White and I spent the last 25 years trying to solve a terrible chronic pain problem. It was labeled many different things including fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and forgetabout-it-you'll-have-it-forever. I saw over 50 doctors, both conventional and alternative. Nothing helped. Then, something wonderful happened. I got a FREE consultation from Dr. Fors and my long, mind-numbing pilgrimage of pain and staggering expense started to come to an end. Dr. Fors is a respected authority and author on pain, a national speaker on pain, a world class pain sleuth and enemy of pain. He makes pain go away. How? Unique metabolic testing. Dr. Fors uses a metabolic testing method to discover where your inflammation pathways get their fuel. Then, he creates a unique protocol for you to "de-flame" your entire body. His diagnostic method is unlike anything else I'd ever tried. And it works, not overnight. If you have been in pain for years, nothing will help you turn the corner on chronic pain overnight. But now I have hope. I have a method. I have progress. I have results. Better yet.... If you've tried everything and have been told you'll just have to live with pain...don't believe it. Now, you can crack the code of your chronic pain -- no matter what your age or current physical condition. How can I be sure? Because I limped into Dr. Fors office. Now, I can run. After 25 years and $250,000 of my own money down the drain, I can now move freely without pain. Now, it's your turn to get rid of pain anywhere and everywhere in your body, your own amazing recovery starts today with a free consultation with Dr. Fors himself. I'm a real person with a true recovery story just like yours will be!” If you are suffering with chronic health issues, you need to consider a non-conventional approach, as described above. Why not find a doctor who does Functional Medicine and give them a call. Also you can join me, Dr. Greg Fors, at one of my FREE “Fixing Chronic Pain and Fatigue” workshops Wednesday, October 8th or Monday, October 13th at 7:00 PM at the Pain and Brain Healing Center, Blaine, MN. BEATING HEART (continued) TELL TALE HEART • Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women. About a quarter of a million women will have a serious heart attack this year. It's true that estrogen gives women a healthy edge in fighting heart disease, but after menopause, the risk increases yearly till women are equal with men. Between the ages of 45 and 65, one out of nine women will show symptoms of heart disease, compared to one in seven men. But after age 65, the ratio jumps to one in three, which is equal to that of men. However, studies have shown that in the first weeks following a heart attack, women are twice as likely to die as men. Furthermore, more women die during bypass surgery than do men. Why? • Some doctors say it's due to a combination of factors. One is that when men go to a doctor and complain of chest pains, doctors automatically think of heart disease. But when women complain of chest pains, doctors may still think of heart trouble as a "man's disease" and will look for other causes first. Furthermore, some doctors tend to think of women as having more psychosomatic illnesses than men. Women too are at fault, for a study has shown that they tend to wait longer than men before going to the hospital for help, increasing their chance of complications. • One cardiovascular surgeon theorizes that another reason more women die during bypass surgery is because they have proportionately smaller arteries, making the surgery more difficult. • Men suffer heart attacks an average of ten years earlier in life than women, but women are twice as likely to die from their first heart attack as men. • It's estimated that 90% of heart disease could have been prevented.

• On average, one person dies of a heart attack eevery minute in the U.S. H HEART OF THE PROBLEM About 600,000 Americans die of heart attacks • eeach year. 350,000 of them die before they can even reach a hospital. • Cardiovascular problems are responsible for over half the deaths of people over age 65. • A quarter of the people who die of heart attacks show no previous sign of disease. • Stress plays a role in 70% of all illnesses. People under stress are six times as likely to have a heart attack as those under little stress. • The heart of a typical alcoholic may be twice the size it should be. • Smoking is responsible for 100,000 deaths from lung cancer and 170,000 deaths from heart attacks each year. CUTTING THE RISKS • People with coronary heart disease are 30% less likely to suffer from blocked arteries if they regularly take naps during the day. • Females who jog an average of 27 miles per week are sick an average of two days per year, compared to eleven sick days for female non-runners. Male runners missed an average of 1.5 days per year compared to 4.4 sick days for male non-runners. • People who work in factories with high noise levels have higher rates of cardiovascular disease, digestive disorders, and circulatory problems than those with quieter workplaces. • A study of 45,000 men done by the Harvard University School of Public Health showed coffee does not increase the risk of heart attack or stroke as long as fewer than six cups per day are consumed. • Smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee at the same time raises the blood pressure. The combination of caffeine and nicotine also stops the effects of many high blood pressure medications. This spells danger for

FAST FACTS • In 1933 at the age of 58, Wilson Mizner had a heart attack in Hollywood, where he was a screen writer. When he regained consciousness, he was asked if he wanted to see a priest. "I want to see a priest, a rabbi, and a Protestant clergyman," he said. "I want to hedge my bets!" When a priest came to his deathbed, Mizner waved him away, saying, "Why should I talk to you? I've just been talking to your boss!" He died shortly afterwards, reportedly with a smile. • Walter Matthau had a heart attack in the middle of filming The Fortune Cookie in 1966. He resumed filming five months later. In the movie, he goes out the door and comes back in again forty pounds lighter. • In 1975 Philadelphians re-elected Francis O'Donnell to the city council even though he had died of a heart attack a week earlier. There wasn't time to change the ballots. • In 1973 two white cops in New York were giving mouth-to-mouth to a Puerto Rican woman who had suffered a heart attack and collapsed. A crowd of Puerto Ricans gathered and thought the cops were assaulting the woman. The policemen didn't speak Spanish and the Puerto Ricans didn't speak English. The mob beat the two cops. • Les Boatwright died of a heart attack a week before the Super Bowl XXIII game, to which he had two tickets. Knowing he wouldn't want to miss the game, his two sons took the tickets, and his ashes, to the game. • Giuseppe De Mai was born with two hearts beating in his chest. In 1894 he signed a contract with the London Academy of Medicine, and was paid $15,000 for permission to study his hearts after his death. THE FINAL FACT • Rabbits who were cuddled for one hour a day suffered one-third the amount of heart disease as rabbits who received no cuddles.

• Garlic contains 33 sulfur compounds, 17 amino acids, germanium, selenium, various minerals, and vitamins A minerals A, B1 B1, and C C. It has only two calo calories per clove, is fat free, and very low in sodium. • Garlic is not just a spice; it is also a medicine. Louis Pasteur proved in 1858 that garlic acted as an antibiotic, killing bacteria in lab culture dishes. During World War II when penicillin was still new and rare and sulfa drugs were often not available, garlic-soaked moss was used as an antiseptic to disinfect wounds and prevent gangrene. There are over 1,200 medical reports and an additional 700 studies of the chemistry of garlic, many of which have shown that garlic lowers cholesterol, decreases blood pressure, and inhibits cancer. It increases the capacity of the body to absorb vitamin B1 which is typically difficult to digest and slow to be assimilated. Garlic kills pathogenic bacteria in the intestinal tract, and also stimulates digestive juices. Consider these studies: • In a trial that pitted garlic against the cholesterol-lowering drug called Bezafibrate, garlic turned out to be just as effective as the medicine. A study reported in the British medical journal Lancet proved that after taking nine cloves of garlic, cholesterol dropped by seven percent. • Volunteer diners had their cholesterol checked before a meal. The average cholesterol level was 221.4 before dining. Then they were fed a meal containing a total of 1/4 pound of butter. Three hours later, the average cholesterol level was up to 237.4. But when the same meal was given again, this time along with the oil from 50 grams of garlic added to the recipe, the average cholesterol level dropped to 212.7, which was lower than before the test subjects had even begun eating. GARLIC FACTS • The Journal of Hypertension reported that garlic can lower blood pressure by as much as nine percent. • One study in India took 432 people who had recently had heart attacks. Half were given garlic oil daily and half were given placebos. After three years, those taking the daily garlic oil suffered 35 percent fewer secondary heart attacks and 45 percent fewer deaths than those taking the placebos. A study of over 40,000 women in Iowa found that those who ate garlic at least once a week had a 35% lower chance of getting colon cancer than those who ate no garlic at all. • A group of people were given garlic every day for three weeks. Then white blood cells were taken from the test subjects and placed in a lab dish containing cancerous cells. The garlic-eater's white blood cells killed off more than twice as many tumor cells as did white blood cells from people who ate no garlic. • Three different groups of toads were fed either freshly minced garlic, garlic oil, or corn oil (as a placebo) for four months before being exposed to aflatoxin B1, which is a food contaminant known to cause liver cancer. Only three percent of the toads fed minced garlic and nine percent fed garlic oil developed tumors. However, 19 percent of those fed corn oil developed cancer. • Even though many studies have shown positive results from garlic, it is still illegal in the U.S. to make any medical claims concerning its health benefits. It is also

In celebration of National Guacamole Day on September 16, Tidbits looks into the facts on the avocado. • The word “avocadoâ€? comes from the Aztec word ahuacatl. The ancient Aztecs prepared guacamole in a molcajete, which was a mortar and pestle tool carved from volcanic rock. Clear back in the 1500s when Spanish explorers encountered the Aztecs, that civilization was making ahuaca-mulli, which translates “avocado mixture.â€? • Native to Central and South America, cultivation of avocados in the United States began the early 1900s. Major producers of this fruit are Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Colombia, and the state of California, which grows 90% of America’s crop. There are about 7,000 avocado groves in the Golden State, with San Diego County designated the Avocado Capital of the U.S. • Lots of folks think that the avocado is a vegetable, but it’s actually the fruit of the Persea Americana tree, a tall evergreen that grows up to 65 feet (19.8 m) in height. One tree can produce about 50 avocados a year. The fruits will not ripen on the tree, and must be picked in order to initiate the ripening process. The avocado, a single-seeded berry, has been nicknamed the alligator pear because of its shape and rough green skin. • We often think of the banana as having the highest measure of potassium, while in fact, there is twice the potassium in one avocado than there is in one banana, 975 mg. compared to 487 mg. The avocado also has one of the highest amounts of protein in a fruit, with 4 grams in one avocado. One medium avocado also has 10 grams of fiber. • The health benefits of the avocado are many, including a rich supply of 18 essential amino acids, which are important for the body’s protein-building process. The fruit is an excellent source of the carotenoid lutein, essential for eye health, reducing the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts. • It’s true that the avocado is very high in fat – about 85% of its calories come from fat, about 20 times the average for other fruits. However, 20 of the 30 grams of fat in one serving of the avocado are beneficial ones, sterols that keep the body’s inflammation under control. Its anti-inflammatory properties have proven beneficial to those suffering from arthritis. The fruit contributes to cardiovascular and heart health as well. It helps boost “goodâ€? cholesterol, while lowering the “bad.â€? Research is also underway to study the avocado’s ability to prevent certain kinds of cancer, including the mouth, skin, and prostrate. • Avocados are good for the outside of the body, too! Their amino acids and essential oils help repair damaged hair, provide moisture for dry skin, and treat sunburns. • Brazilians enjoy the flavor of avocados so much, they mix them in with ice cream as a very popular dessert item there. • If you need to use your avocados and they aren’t ripe, you can speed up that process by placing them in a brown paper bag with an apple or a banana, either of which will release ethylene gas that helps the avocados ripen more rapidly.

Four Strikes from Little Larry ! €A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her class by saying, 'Everyone who thinks they're stupid, stand up!' After a few seconds, Little Larry stood up. The teacher said, 'Do you think you're stupid, Larry?' 'No, ma'am, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!' €Larry watched, fascinated, as his mother smoothed cold cream on her face. 'Why do you do that, mommy?' he asked. 'To make myself beautiful,' said his mother, who then began removing the cream with a tissue. 'What's the matter, asked Larry 'Giving up?' €Larry's kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local police station where they saw pictures tacked to a bulletin board of the 10 most wanted criminals. One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person. 'Yes,' said the policeman. 'The detectives want very badly to capture him.' Larry asked, "Why didn't you keep him when you took his picture ?" €Little Larry attended a horse auction with his father. He watched as his father moved from horse to horse, running his hands up and down the horse's legs and rump, and chest. After a few minutes, Larry asked, 'Dad, why are you doing that?' His father replied, 'Because when I'm buying horses, I have to make sure that they are healthy and in good shape before I buy. Larry, looking worried, said, 'Dad, I think the UPS guy wants to buy Mom ..... '

● Those who study such things say that even fish can have distinct personalities. Within a single species, scientists have observed that some fish are quite adventurous, willing to go to great lengths to obtain food or a mate, while others are much more timid, eschewing daring feats altogether. ************************ Thought for the Day: “If a man does his best, what else is there?” -- General George S. Patton

● Some state names have come to the English language through roundabout routes. Take Alaska, for example. The state name comes from the Aleut word “alaxsxaq,” which in turn comes from the Russian meaning “the object toward which the action of the sea is directed.”

● In his spare time, Jim Cummings, a successful voice actor, calls sick children in hospital wards and talks to them as some of his most famous characters, including Winnie the Pooh and Tigger.

● In 1923, a man named Frank Hayes earned the distinction of becoming the first (and so far only) person to win a horse race posthumously. Hayes was actually a trainer rather than a jockey, and he was riding a 20-1 underdog named Sweet Kiss. It seems that Hayes suffered a heart attack in the midst of the race, but his body stayed in the saddle while Sweet Kiss beat the odds to cross the finish line first. For the rest of her life, the horse he rode was nicknamed “Sweet Kiss of Death.”

● Given the notoriety Las Vegas enjoys as a place for quick weddings, you might be surprised to learn that, technically, it is illegal in that city for a mustachioed man to kiss a woman.

On September 11, 1952, the first artificial aortic valve was installed in a patient in Washington, D.C. Come along with Tidbits as we take a look at the human heart! HEART ATTACK FACTS: • 37% of all deaths in the United States are related to heart disease, making it the largest single cause of natural death. Heart disease kills twice as many people as all forms of cancer combined. The major causes are smoking, fatty diet, high blood pressure, obesity, stress, heredity, lack of exercise, and diabetes. It is an illness produced of man's environment. Before 1900, heart attacks were very rare. The rate of heart disease increased so sharply between 1940 and 1967 that the World Health Organization called it the world’s most serious epidemic. IT'S A FACT • Every single cell in the heart is guided by an electrical impulse which synchronizes the heartbeat so all muscle cells contract in unison to pump the blood. During a heart attack, the cells begin firing out of turn so the efficiency of the heart is lost and the blood does not get pumped. When doctors shock the heart, the shock overrides each cell’s individual firing mechanism and once again synchronizes every cell, hopefully getting them all to work together again.

● The U.S. Open, which takes place at the end of summer every year, is one of the oldest tennis championships in the world, beginning in 1881 with a men’s singles competition. The modern competition, of course, now includes men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. That’s a lot of tennis -- and a lot of balls. During the two weeks of the championship, approximately 70,000 tennis balls are used.

● When you think of dangerous occupations, the jobs that immediately come to mind are probably firefighter and police officer. You might be surprised to learn, then, that in New York City, the fatality rate for garbage collectors is twice as high as it is for members of the NYPD.
