It's spring time, the water is flowing and everyone enjoys a good waterfall. Here are 10 of the most distinct and alluring ones. Put together a weekend tour and catch some of them. Winnewissa Falls, Pipestone: Located in the Pipestone National Monument in the southwest corner of Minnesota, it is a 20ft waterfall surrounded by rock quarries and stray boulders. The site is rich in geological history with a walking trail through the quartzite rock faces along the Pipestone Creek. It’s a unique and welcome respite from the surrounding farmland of this area. Vermillion Falls, Hastings: It's right in the town in Hastings, just off Highway 61 next to an old mill site. From a parking area, there is a paved trail right to the edge of the 50-foot falls. Limestone walls make up the gorge that the water flows into before making its way to the Mississippi. Ramsey Falls, Redwood Falls: A 45-ft tall waterfal cascades down a granite ravine in a heavily wooded bluff area. Get to Ramsey Park, the largest municipal park in the state You can drive right up to this site in the Minnesota River Valley and take a quick little hike to the observation area. Illgen Falls, Silver Bay: The beauty of Illgen Falls is a gorgeous little waterfall in Tettegouche State Park. In fact, you can even rent a cabin located less than 100 feet from it. The Illgen Falls Cabin is the only one of its kind; a fully-furnished A-frame. The A-frame cabin, that sleeps six, was formerly a private residence on a drive to a gated site, with the beautiful 50-ft falls as your own private little piece of paradise. Minnehaha Falls, Minneapolis: As Minnehaha Creek winds its way around the metro area and drops off this 53 ft rock cliff before flowing into the Mississippi River, it provides an urban escape with plenty of room to explore. The falls and park are fantastic in the spring and incredible when it freezes. Wolf Creek Falls, Banning: Small but secluded in Banning State Park. You'll find it after a bit of a hike through deep hardwood forests and rock outcrops. It’s a magical place where you will rarely see others and the tranquility of this serene wonderland will make you never want to leave. Minneopa Falls, Mankato: First, a small waterfall, followed by a 25-foot drop into a river gorge with an arch bridge as the backdrop. Easily found on the edge of the town, this state park also features hikes overlooking the bluffs and an old windmill from the 1800′s. Devil’s Kettle, Grand Marais: A real geological anomoly that has stumped just about everyone who has ever researched the thing. The Brule River, while making its way to Lake Superior, splits into two streams. On the right the waterfall drops fifty feet into a pool and makes its way out to the big lake. On the left it drops into a sinkhole and disappears to God knows where. Geologists have even dropped brightly colored dyes and other objects into this and still have no idea where they end up. High Falls of the Pigeon River, Grand Portage: The highest waterfall in the state is in Grand Portage State Park and is remarkable. The Pigeon River thunders down a shale rock cliff 120 feet into a shallow pool and out to Superior. An easy 1-mile hike leads to an observation platform of the falls, which is also the International Border of the US and Canada. Gooseberry Falls, Two Harbors: The crown jewel of the North Shore and one of the most recognizable sites in the state. Featuring 5 sets of falls through a dramatic river gorge, and then out to an agate beach on the largest lake in the world. With hiking trails, pine forests and rocky cliffs, it's an absolute must! Totally awesome...! as we hope your trip to any of these will be.

• In ancient i Rome, vain i women h had d marble statues made of their heads. Many wealthy women also equipped their statues with removable marble wigs, so they could be changed to match the hairstyles. • Queen Elizabeth I of England suffered from smallpox at the age of 29. She survived the illness, but her hair did not and she was bald from then on. To hide the condition, she began to wear ornate and elaborate wigs. As a result, wigs became all the rage across England and Europe, a fashion that lasted for centuries. • King Louis XIV employed 40 wigmakers and needed an entire corridor to hold all his wigs. His personal barber was the only human being ever allowed to see him bald. • Many people powdered their wigs with flour to absorb grease and dirt and make them look cleaner. This led to a shortage of flour in Marie Antoinette's day, adding to the
social unrest and riots that led to the French Revolution. When wig-powdering in England led to a flour shortage in 1795, Parliament decided to tax every citizen who used hair powder. Huge sums were raised before wigwearing went out of style. • In 1765, men in London began to give up their wigs in favor of natural hair. This worried wigmakers, who staged a demonstration by marching through the streets to the palace. They presented a petition to King George, asking him to force all adult males to wear wigs by royal edict. An opposing group staged a counterdemonstration in which they pretended to represent the wooden leg-makers. They petitioned the king to have a leg removed in order to promote their trade. The King got the point and denied both petitions. • In 1766 an observer wrote, "'Tis almost impossible to make the ladies understand that heads bigger than one's body are ugly." • During a skirmish with the Osage Indians, a commander was stunned and slightly wounded by a blow. He fell from his horse, and an Indian came over. The Indian was fascinated by the commander's stunning head of white hair, and he grabbed a handful in preparation for scalping the man. The commander leapt to his feet and ran off, leaving the surprised Indian holding a handful of hair. He'd never seen a wig before and was convinced it was a magical scalp because it had fallen off in his hand. The wig became his prized possession and he was henceforward known as Paw-Hu-Scah, meaning "white hair." When he became chief, the town that grew up around his settlement was named Pawhuska, Oklahoma. • A wigmaker in Sydney, Australia branched into a new area: providing false hairpieces for the chest of men who are "bald" on their chest. He reportedly made a model that would even stay on in the water. • In Rome, there were few natural blondes, so the government declared that blonde hair would henceforth be known as a badge of sin. Wicked ladies were licensed, taxed, and required to dye their hair blonde or wear yellow wigs. Today, we still feel that blonds "have more fun." —Joke— • William Rose BenĂŠt was looking through the window of a wig shop. Two identical toupees were displayed on wig stands. “They’re as alike as toupees in a pod,â€? said BenĂŠt to his companion.

F.W. WOOLWORTH Frank Winfield Woolworth had a brand-new idea back in 1878 1878, the “five “five-and-dime” and dime” store. store Here’s the history of his endeavors that made “Wooworth’s” a household name. • The Woolworth family were farmers in upstate New York, but farming wasn’t Frank’s career choice. After finishing school, he found work at the local dry goods store, where he came up with a few ideas for a store of his own. • In 1878, when Frank was 26, he borrowed $300 from his boss to open Woolworth’s Great Five Cent Store in Utica, New York. Within months, the store had failed. Refusing to give up, Woolworth tried Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for another store, using the same sign he’d used in Utica. He expanded his inventory to include items up to 10 cents, such as gravy strainers, scoops, purses, biscuit cutters, soap writing books, pie plates, handkerchiefs, and hundreds of other novelties. In 1880, Woolworth’s added manufactured Christmas tree ornaments with resounding success. • Woolworth introduced a novel idea of displaying his merchandise, different from other stores of the period. While other retailers kept their goods behind a counter, requiring customers to present the clerk with a list of desired items, Woolworth used self-service display cases with all prices clearly marked to avoid haggling with customers. • Within just a few years Woolworth was a millionaire. By 1909, he had expanded to England. In 1912, there were close to 600 stores, and the company’s new corporate headquarters in New York City was under construction. In 1913, the Woolworth Building opened its doors, a 60-store skyscraper that was the tallest building in the world at 792 feet (241 m), an honor it held until 1930. It was built at a cost of $13.5 million, paid for by Woolworth in cash out of his private funds. • In 1917, the Woolworth family moved into Winfield Hall, a newly-constructed Italian Renaissance 56-room mansion on 16 acres on Long

I Island. With walls and pillars of marble, the home ccost $90 million in 1917, with its entryway’s grand sstaircase alone costing $2 million. • In 1919, when there were 1,000 stores, tragedy struck. Frank Woolworth, who had had tr a lifelong fear of dentists, ignored symptoms of infection, and died from septic poisoning as a result of an abscessed tooth. The company was handed over to his brother Charles, and within 10 years, another 1,250 stores were added. During the mid1920s, a store was opened every 17 days. • The five-and-dime concept began to disappear in 1932 when a line of 20-cent merchandise was added. In 1935, the company discontinued its 20-cent limit altogether. • Lunch counters were incorporated into many stores, and throughout the 1940s, Woolworth’s was America’s largest restaurant chain. The lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C. made history in 1960, when four black students sat down at the segregated counter and were refused service, setting off a series of civil rights’ sit-ins and boycotts. • In the late ‘70s, the company was the world’s largest department store chain. Even as the company acquired other stores chains, its own variety store sales were dwindling. In 1997, the last of the stores closed, and the company was renamed the Venator Group. It now focuses on its most successful retailer,Foot Locker, Inc.

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles
Living to be 100 California, Costa Rica, Greece, Italy and Japan all have something in common. They all have a city with large numbers of people who reach age 100. Only 25 percent of our longevity comes from DNA, says National Geographic author Dan Buettner in his book “Blue Zones.” The rest comes from our environment and lifestyle. With teams of researchers, Buettner traveled the world and discovered the secrets to longevity. There’s no one magic bullet from all of these locations, but lifestyle, spirituality and community combine with a few habits these centenarians follow. Moderate activity, semi-vegetarian diet, a clear purpose and staying socially engaged are common traits among the people who routinely live to be 100. In 2009, AARP joined with the Blue Zones project to add years to the lives of people in Albert Lea, Minnesota. The end result: The life expectancy of the nearly 800 participants rose, simply by making a few changes in their lifestyle and diet. Check aarp.org for more information about the AARP/Blue Zones Vitality Project. Search for The Minnesota Miracle or Creating America’s Healthiest Hometown. Buettner’s books are worth reading. “Blue Zones” (subtitled “9 Lessons for Living Longer”) also is available on Amazon.com or BlueZones. com. Be sure to look for the updated second edition released in 2012. A new addition is “The Blue Zones Solution,” which includes information on diets (and the science behind them), recipes, superfoods, community, family and the routines and personal stories of those in Buettner’s research. No matter how old we are, it’s never too late to be inspired to reach maximum health. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

▲ Those who study such things say that the smallest vertebrate in the world is a type of carp: The Paedocypris progenetica grows to be less than half an inch long.
▲ If you were a member of the middle class in Victorian England, you might have spent an enjoyable afternoon with friends on a boat, searching for bizarre sea creatures. This popular pastime was known as “monster spotting.”
▲ We’ve all heard the childhood tale of George Washington chopping down a cherry tree, then ‘fessing up because he could not tell a lie. Most history books don’t mention other aspects of his childhood, though; for instance, did you know that our first president, when he was 10 years old, was a champion wrestler and long jumper?
▲ You’ve probably seen ventriloquists perform, but you may not realize that it’s a skill not limited to humans. The crested bellbird, which can be found in the wetlands of Australia and Venezuela, throws its voice in order to misdirect predators.
▲ You might be surprised to learn that seven out of eight battle deaths suffered by all countries participating in World War II were suffered by the Russians and the Germans.
▲ A recent study conducted by researchers at the Nara University of Education in Japan found that music affects people’s generosity. Specifically, if you’re listening to music you enjoy, you’re likely to be more generous than if there were no music playing at all. In this scenario, the inverse is also true: If you’re listening to a song you dislike, you’re more likely to be stingy.
▲ If you’re like 60 percent of American pet owners, your pet sleeps with you.
▲ Irish mom Maria Jones-Elliott holds the distinction of having twins with the longest interval between the two births. In 2012, she went into labor almost four months before her due date. After two days of labor, one of the girls was born, but then the contractions stopped. While Amy, born weighing just 1 pound, 3 ounces, continued to improve in the neonatal intensive care unit, her sister Kate continued to grow in utero -- for another 87 days. Against all odds, both twins survived and are now thriving toddlers.
▲ If you went into a restaurant for breakfast in the 1930s and ordered “cluck and grunt,” the server would know to bring you ham and eggs.

On April 12, 1799, the world's first combcutting machine, designed to turn ivory into combs, was patented by Phineas Pratt. Come along with Tidbits as we comb our hair! HAIR FACTS • Hair is mostly made up of a protein called keratin, the same substance that forms the outer layer of skin and the fingernails. In animals, horns, hooves, claws, feathers, beaks, porcupine quills, and whale baleen are all also made of keratin. • Hair is the fastest growing tissue in the body, and bone marrow comes in second. • Hair grows faster during warm weather than cold, faster during sleep, and fastest between the ages of 16 to 24. • How many hair follicles are there on an average adult? 5 million. 100,000 are on the scalp. There are some 580 hairs per square inch on a man's face. You shed scalp hairs at the rate of 70-100 per day. • Hair never grows on the lips, palms, and soles. These are the only areas on the body with no hair follicles. • Combing is less detrimental than brushing. • It's impossible to repair a split end, aside from cutting the hair. FAST FACTS ABOUT HAIR • Hairs live two to six years before falling out, to be replaced by a new hair. Because of this, it's rare for hair to reach lengths exceeding several feet. Hair will be replaced at least 12 times during a normal life span. • A strand of hair is stronger than a copper wire of equivalent diameter. A typical strand of hair can withstand a weight of about six pounds (2.7 kg) before breaking. An entire head of hair can hold about two tons.
