Could an Autoimmune Disorder Be the Cause of Your Chronic Health Problems?

Serving the Twin Cities Area for over 17 years!

By Dr. Greg Fors, DC / Board-certified Neurologist There is a tragedy unfolding today, an epidemic that goes underdiagnosed and in many times improperly treated! Today approximately 50 million Americans or 20% of the population suffer from autoimmune diseases and 75% of those affected are women. Could you be one of them? In today’s modern world of poor diets, increased stress and environmental toxins, autoimmune diseases are on the rise. This epidemic is preventable because one of the primary causes is the type of foods we are putting into our gut and the damage it is causing, more on this later. If you are experiencing chronic health problems with a combination of any the following symptoms you may have an autoimmune disorder: chronic joint and/or muscle pain, chronic fatigue, difficulty concentrating or focusing, weakness, numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, recurrent rashes or hives, sun-sensitivity, a butterfly-shaped rash across your face, dry eyes, mouth or skin, abdominal pains, blood or mucus in your stool, diarrhea or mouth ulcers, multiple miscarriages or blood clots. Autoimmunity is the result of a misdirected immune system that causes one’s own immune system to attack the self. Even though they are a very common disorder most individuals with chronic symptoms rarely get tested for them. Researchers have now identified over 100 different autoimmune diseases, possibly you’ve already been diagnosed with one. They come with wide variety of strange names such as: Hashimoto’s and Graves’ thyroiditis, lupus, MS, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, Sjögren’s, reactive arthritis, IBD, FMS, and CFS. Because they come with so many different names and symptoms there is a misunderstanding among the medical community and general public that these are separate disease disorders. At their core they all involve systemic inflammation from an immune response leading to an attack on your own tissues. There is evidence of an underlying genetic component; however, these genes only get expressed or turned on by specific environmental triggers. I explained it to my patients this way, “you were diagnosed with this autoimmune disorder when you were 48, yet you had the same genes since you were born. What was the trigger that made you manifest this disease now, and not when you were in your 20's for example?” Think of it this way, your immune system is your Homeland Security, there to protect you from any foreign invaders by targeting them with inflammation and specific antibodies. In an autoimmune disease it is as if some of the agents of your Homeland Security have gone rogue and are attacking the Homeland and wreaking havoc on good tissues and organs. Factors that can trigger this autoimmune response are many. An autoimmune response may occur when your genetic predisposition is turned on by toxins from heavy metals like mercury and lead, mycotoxins from molds, and chronic viral infections such as herpes simplex and Epstein-Barr. As previously mentioned, a primary triggering event for an autoimmune response is an unhealthy gastrointestinal system. This can eventually manifest as a damaged and “Leaky Gut”, leading to food allergies and nutritional deficiencies such as vitamin D3. Very recent research has now established that this “Leaky Gut” is the primary driver of systemic inflammation and autoimmune responses. Conditions known as SIBO or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, not only lead to irritable bowel symptoms but also can damage the G.I. lining leading to “Leaky Gut”. The conventional medical response to autoimmune disorders is to prescribe drugs that suppress your immune system. They may turn down the inflammatory response and some of the symptoms for a while, but taking them comes at a tremendous cost. Remember, your immune system is your Homeland Security keeping you safe from cancerous cells and infectious invaders, therefore, taking these drugs may increase your risk for certain cancers and chronic infections. Other common side effects are rashes, more G.I. disorders which can be toxic to the liver or bone marrow. A better approach would be to go after your personal environmental factors that triggered the autoimmune response in the first place. FACT: 70% of the immune system lies in our G.I. tract and there are specific laboratory tests to identify if you have systemic inflammation, SIBO and a “Leaky Gut”. This is standard testing for all my new patients along with screening for autoimmune disorders. And, once identified, there are specific gastrointestinal healing programs that can be implemented to reverse the condition and improve your immune response. There is also a profound link between food allergies and autoimmune diseases, so many times the autoimmune response can be reduced by identifying and removing a patient’s food allergies discovered through a sophisticated Alletess IgG food allergy test for 184 foods. Any and all triggers must be identified and removed to conquer the cause and misery of autoimmune diseases. This can be and has been achieved with proper laboratory testing. Want to know more? It will be held on Wednesday, November 9th at 7 PM and Friday morning November 11 at 10 AM at the Pain and Brain Healing Center in Blaine.
