The Misunderstood and Misdiagnosed Problem of Candida By Dr. Greg Fors, DC Board-certified Neurologist
Candida Syndrome - Yeast Overgrowth - Ever Heard It? Every day people come into my clinic with unexplained chronic symptoms that are destroying their lives: fibromyalgia, chronic pain and fatigue, IBS and depression. Many times, I will find that one of the underlying causes of their complex health problems is a pathological yeast known as Candida albicans. Even though Candida and yeast overgrowth are quite common, many people are unaware that they have it, and their conventional doctor tends to ignore it. The symptoms of Candida syndrome and yeast overgrowth are as diverse as they are destructive, and range from debilitating digestive problems to chronic pain and fatigue as well as brain fog, depression, anxiety and multiple skin conditions. Compounding the problem of this symptomatic complexity and diversity is the fact that it often goes undiagnosed or is misdiagnosed by the conventional doctor thus allowing it to continue to grow and form destructive colonies that overwhelm your body’s natural defense system. What is Candida? Candida albicans is a microscopic fungus that typically lives in small numbers in the body harmlessly; that is until it gets out of hand. Candida can be found in the mouth, intestinal tract and the vagina. If your immune system is functioning optimally, this yeast infection is rarely serious, nor does it spread. However, if your beneficial bacteria and/or your immune system are out of balance, Candida infection and its toxins can overwhelm the area and even migrate to other parts of the body, causing multiple complex symptoms. How Candida Overgrowth Happens This yeast overgrowth can be triggered by many things. Primary among these are diets containing sugar and high carbs which tend to fuel the growth of the yeast in the G.I. tract. Candida loves carbs and sugars, and it is one of the primary causes of sugar craving. A rundown immune system, often related to nutritional deficiencies, can also make you vulnerable to Candida overgrowth. Taking long term or multiple antibiotics can disrupt your microbiome by destroying the beneficial bacteria you need, leaving you open to an overgrowth of the Candida. Other medications can increase your chances of Candida overgrowth such as birth control pills, estrogen, and steroids, like prednisone. Of course, stress can also play its role in affecting your immune system, again, leaving you vulnerable to Candida overgrowth. Major Signs You Have Candida Overgrowth A few of the primary signs of Candida syndrome are digestive issues with bloating, reflux, constipation or diarrhea, feeling tired and rundown, chronic pain, brain fog, mood swings, depression, autoimmune disorders, vaginal and rectal itching, strong sugar and carb craving. Most individuals suffer for years without knowing the cause of this health problem or how to overcome it. How Candida Syndrome Is Properly Diagnosed There is a lot of misinformation on the Internet especially on how to diagnose Candida syndrome. In nearly 30 years of working with individuals, I have found only a few scientific ways to establish if there is truly Candida overgrowth. The best laboratory tests are: 1) a comprehensive digestive stool analysis with a culture and a microscopic examination for yeast, 2) an organic acid profile looking for the waste products from Candida in the urine or 3) a Candida antibody blood test. Why is it so important to be diagnostically correct? When you’re chronically sick and suffering you do not want to waste your time and effort drastically changing
your diet and taking antimicrobials to kill off something that is not really there, nor causing you problems. Once Diagnosed How Is It Treated? As with many health issues the answer lies in the gut. A healthy gastrointestinal tract contains over 5000 different bacterial species, most of them “good and some of them not so good. With Candida overgrowth, the delicate balance of microorganisms has been disturbed. This allows yeast to invade and colonize your digestive system. This yeast overgrowth can damage your G.I. lining causing your gut to become leaky, leading to chronic inflammation and perhaps even an autoimmune disease. However, utilizing an effective dietary regime with targeted supplements, you can get rid of the yeast and restore your gut's healthy microbiome. An individualized personal lifestyle medicine approach is vital in real healing for Candida syndrome. Want to know more now? Join me, Dr. Greg Fors, at one of my FREE “Conquer Your Candida Problems Once and For All Health workshops. Held Wednesday, September 27th 7:00 PM and Monday, October 2nd 7:00 PM at the Pain and Brain Healing Center. For directions and to reserve your space call my clinic at 763-862-7100, you can also schedule a free consultation with me. THIS WEEK IN HISTORY (cont’d) • Sonya Thomas has held an interesting record since September 4, 2011. On that day, she won the U.S. Chicken Wing Eating Championship by consuming 183 Buffalo wings in 12 minutes at the National Buffalo Wings Festival in Buffalo, New York. Sonja is a member of the International Federation of Competitive Eating and holds records in more than 25 eating competitions. Earlier in 2011, she nabbed the hot dog eating contest for women by gobbling down 40 hot dogs in 10 minutes. The following year she broke her own record, eating 46 hot dogs. Other records include 44 lobsters in 12 minutes, 38 Moonpies in 8 minutes, and 250 tater tots in 5 minutes. Her favorite competition foods are hardboiled eggs, oysters, and chicken wings. She keeps her weight under control by exercising two hours a day on an incline treadmill. • In September of 1960, light heavyweight boxer Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. traveled to Rome, Italy, to participate in the Summer Olympics. He was just 18 years old, but won all four of his matches, even defeating the three-time European champion. Clay was awarded the gold medal on September 5, 1960, and turned professional shortly afterward. In 1964, he converted to Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Ali. Ali retired from boxing in 1981, and turned to charitable work. Three years later, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, attributed to his many boxing-related brain injuries. After struggling with the disease for many years, Ali passed away in June of 2016. • America’s first Labor Day holiday took place on September 5, 1882, when more than 10,000 workers gathered in New York City for a parade originating at City Hall, followed by a picnic, concert, and speeches. The activity was organized by New York’s Central Labor Union to demonstrate the expansion of labor movements and their ability to improve working conditions. Labor Day was made an official national holiday in 1894. • The New York Yankees played their final game at New York’s Polo Grounds on September 5, 1922. It was the final game of the World Series, with the Yanks playing the New York Giants, who took the Series 4 games to none. Yankee Stadium opened for the 1923 season. • On the sixth of September, 1899, Carnation processed its first can of evaporated milk in Kent, Washington. until 1901. Evaporated milk is made by removing about 60% of milk’s water through a vacuum process, then homogenizing, sealing in cans, and sterilizing through a canning process. • The community of Canton, Ohio opened the doors of the Pro Football Hall of Fame on September 7, 1963. It was an appropriate spot for the Hall, considering that the NFL was founded in Canton in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association. Currently, there are 310 members of the NFL Hall of Fame. It’s estimated that there are about 208 million NFL fans in the United States. Of this number, only 7% ever get to go to a live game, while 93% have to be content to watch the games on television. • Neonatal facilities today take the incubator for granted for the care of newborn babies, but until September 7, 1888, no American baby had ever been placed in one. Edith Eleanor McLean was born that day to Scottish immigrants, weighing 2 lbs., 7 oz., with Dr. William Derning in charge of the delivery, becoming the first preemie to be treated as such. Derning was the first American doctor to try what he called a “hatching cradle,” an incubator heated with a 15gallon (12.5 British) reservoir of warm water. The device underwent several improvements over the next several years, and became a popular exhibit at the 1904 World’s Fair, where 14 metal-framed glass incubators were attended by nurses caring for endangered newborns from orphanages and poor families. • One of the world’s favorite comic strips, “Blondie,” has been around for nearly 90 years. Drawn by creator Chic Young, the cartoon first appeared in newspapers on September 8, 1930. For the first 2 ½ years, Blondie Boopadoop and Dagwood Bumstead dated, finally marrying in February, 1933. The Bumstead family, including children Alexander and Cookie, reside in Joplin, Missouri, where Dagwood is the office manager at the J.C. Dithers Construction Company. The comic strip was responsible for the term “Dagwood sandwich,” since Dagwood loves building enormous sandwiches on the kitchen table. The strip was drawn by Chic until his death in 1973, when the reins were passed to his son Dean Young, who continues to draw “Blondie.” The popular cartoon appears in more than 2,000 newspapers in 47 countries, and is translated into 35 languages. • When Britain’s Queen Victoria passed away in January of 1901, she was the longest-reigning British monarch in history, reigning 63 years, 7 months, and 2 days. Her great-great-granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II surpassed Victoria’s record on September 9, 2015.

Amazing Plants
MANCHINEEL TREE • According to Guinness World Records, the deadliest tree on Earth is the manchineel tree. The manchineel is native to tropical beaches throughout Florida, the Caribbean, and Central and South America, where it grows to a height of about 50 feet (25 m). A member of the spurge family, every part of the tree is toxic. • The least toxic part of the plant is the fruit. The fruit looks like apples, smells like apples, and tastes like apples, yet Spanish conquistadors dubbed it “manzanita de la muerte” or “little apple of death.” The scientific name, “Hippomane mancinella” comes from the Greek words for “horse” and “madness.” • Within minutes of taking a bite, the tongue and throat start to sizzle with a peppery taste before swelling and bleeding. Abdominal pain, vomiting, and digestive tract damage follow. Fortunately, death is rare because people rarely get beyond the first bite of the fruit before regretting their decision. • The sap is even more poisonous than the fruit. Milky white, it contains a cocktail of acidic poisons that will burn skin and even peel paint from cars. Should any sap come into contact with the eyes, blindness will result. • Leaning against the tree trunk is dangerous, cutting the tree down is dangerous, and even sitting underneath the tree to take shelter from a storm is dangerous, as rainwater dissolves the toxins and carries them downward. • So toxic is the sap that the native Carib tribes used it to poison the tips of their arrows. Explorer Ponce de Leon was hit by such an arrow in the year 1521 on the southeastern coast of Florida. Although he
escaped the attack, he died soon afterwards from the poison in his bloodstream. • William Ellis, ship surgeon for explorer James Cook on his third and final voyage in 1780, wrote: "A party of men were sent to cut wood, as the island apparently afforded plenty of that article; amongst other trees they unluckily cut down several of the manchineel, the juice of which getting into their eyes, rendered them blind for several days." • The leaves are also poisonous and local tribes would drop leaves into the water supply of their enemies to taint it. • If you decide to eradicate a manchineel tree by burning it, the smoke will cause blindness and asphyxiation. If you cut the tree down, the wood and sawdust is toxic. However, carpenters are able to use the lumber if the wood is left to cure in the sun long enough for the poison to evaporate. • Even merely standing near the tree or sitting underneath it for too long will cause irritation to the lungs by inhaling vapors given off by the sap. • Not surprisingly, humans have worked hard to eradicate the tree, and it is now an endangered species. Beach resorts often post warning signs on the trees, or spray paint the trunks with red paint to warn people away. • Despite its drawbacks, however, the tree serves some useful purposes. It anchors fragile coastlines, preventing erosion during storms and providing a windbreak. Natives used extracts from the tree as medicine to treat edema, as a laxative, and for use as a diuretic. It’s possible that scientists could find a use for its biotoxins in medicine.

Your Skills Are Needed Already dreading winter and those long days indoors? You’re not alone. One key to staying active during cold weather is to give yourself a reason to get out of the house on a regular basis. Consider volunteering in the community. If the desire is there, maybe all you need is an opportunity. Here are a few ideas. Manage a Red Cross blood drive. Teach a skill such as tennis or hockey to children. Lay a kitchen floor for another senior who can’t afford to hire help. Sign up to be a police or court translator. Pack and deliver Meals on Wheels. Teach a weekly balance class to other seniors. You don’t have to be especially physically active to volunteer. There

are plenty of sit-down opportunities. Work one-on-one with a small child for reading and writing skills. Answer phones at the library or animal shelter. Manage the check-in desk at a local race event. Teach an adult to read or speak English. If you speak a second language, tutor a high-school student. Check www.seniorcorps. gov for loads of opportunities, both near you and far away. The Corps has nearly a quarter of a million seniors. In some places the needs are great, and if you’re over age 55, they’ll make use of your life experience. You might help other seniors to stay in their homes by offering support services, drive people to appointments, help veterans find employment or work on environmental issues. If there’s a natural disaster, you’ll be able to support the first responders. Call them at 1-800-424-8867. Check the Global Citizens Network at www.volunteermatch.org for opportunities in advocacy, youth, community, children and more. If you want to travel for a good reason, consider Habitat for Humanity. They’re building housing in 70 countries around the world. And you thought it was going to be a long, dreary winter ... (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

was a mess. The VA demoted the medical director within hours. In June, President Donald Trump signed the VA Accountability Act, which speeds the process of getting rid of rotten employees. Enter the VAOIG, which found another reason to fire the guy: As part of yet another investigation of this employee, it discovered he had been sending VA emails to his personal accounts as well as to his wife, emails that contained sensitive personnel info as far back as 2012. He refused to give her email address, claiming spousal privilege (which didn’t stop the VAOIG from finding it, of course). The guy was fired. One day later, the Merit Systems Protection Board issued a stay order: The VA couldn’t fire the guy until the MSPB waded through his claim of a wrongful termination. The former director is back at work, on the payroll, but in a role that keeps him away from patient care. The Office of Special Counsel will assess the information in light of the act the president signed in June.
The Department of Veterans Affairs doesn’t typically air its dirty laundry in public, but a recent press release included the headline “MSPB forces VA to take back fired official” -- just when we thought they were able to unload bad employees. In April 2017, the director of a VA medical center was demoted. The center kept running out of critical supplies because it had no inventory system, and the surgical supplies they did have were frequently kept in dirty storage areas. The VA Office of the Inspector General report used the phrase “the highest level of chaos.” In three years there had been over 190 reports of compromised patient safety. Multiple serious surgeries had to be canceled due to lack of equipment. In short, the place 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

RADITHOR (YIKES!!) • The discovery of radium in 1898 sparked a radioactive health craze. Here was an interesting glowin-the-dark phenomenon, popularized by a pretty woman named Madame Curie and her husband Pierre, who confirmed that the substance could destroy cancer cells. The public was dazzled. • What transpired on the unregulated markets of capitalism was a worldwide industry of radium quackery: radium-laced cosmetics claimed to smooth your skin. Radium-infused blankets reportedly eased arthritis. Radioactive pendants helped with rheumatism and radiumlaced pills aided digestion. • In New Jersey, William Bailey called himself a doctor though he never studied medicine. He started producing radiuminfused water in 1918, which he bottled and sold as a miracle cure-all. Called Radithor, it was prescribed by doctors to cure everything from gout to baldness. It sold for $1 per bottle ($15 in today’s currency), and Bailey offered medical doctors a 17% kickback on every prescription they wrote out for Radithor. • One of the more noteworthy recipients of a prescription was Eben Byers of Pittsburgh, PA, a wealthy and well-known industrialist and socialite. Eben had trouble with a broken arm in 1927. His
Please Don’t Litter
prescription for Radithor was supposed to heal the fracture by stimulating his endocrine system. Instructions were to swallow an entire bottle once a day. Eben decided that if some was good, more was better. He started taking several every day. • Every bottle of Radithor contained one microgram of radium and one microgram of thorium. When radiation is swallowed, it lodges in the bone marrow where it remains. The halflife of radium is 1,600 years. It sits in the bones and bombards the local tissues with alpha particles, which cause cancer. • Eben swore it healed his arm and reduced his pain. He had Radithor shipped by the caseload to his house. He convinced his friends it was a miracle cure. But by 1930, Eben, now age 50, started getting sick. By this time he had ingested around 1,400 bottles of Radithor over the course of three years. He got headaches and lost weight. His teeth fell out. Abscesses formed in his brain, along with holes in his skull. When he went for a professional opinion, he was diagnosed with radiation poisoning. He stopped drinking Radithor. By now his bones were crumbling and his jaw had to be amputated. He died in 1932 at the age of 52. The article in the “Wall Street Journal” noted, “The radium water worked fine until his
On War’ d
jaw came off.” • When publicity spread about Eben’s death by radium water, William Bailey closed the factory. By the time a cease-anddesist order was delivered, he was long gone. Bailey was never charged with any wrongdoing, and soon opened a new shop in New York manufacturing radioactive belt buckles, radioactive paperweights, and other products. Eventually, the federal government closed that company down. • Eben Byers is buried in Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in a lead-lined coffin. His remains are highly radioactive. • Radithor did not cause a widespread epidemic of radiation poisoning because it was costly. At $15 per dose, it was out of the reach of most Americans. Eben was wealthy and could afford as many doses as he wanted to take. • This episode led to the strengthening of the Food and Drug Administration’s power to regulate patent medicines. By 1932, radioactive products had been removed from the market.

► Those who study such things say that when buying beer at the grocery store, men tend to get six-packs, while women are more likely to stock up with 12-packs.
► The active ingredient in aspirin, acetylsalicylic acid, is derived from the bark of the willow tree.
► When you think of large tire manufacturers, the companies that immediately spring to mind are probably Goodyear and Michelin. You might be surprised to learn, then, that the world’s largest manufacturer of tires is actually Danish toy company The Lego Group. It’s true; they produce more tires than any other manufacturer. (Just don’t try to put them on your car.)
► Does the sight of a bald eagle inspire you with patriotism? If so, you can thank John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, who overruled Benjamin Franklin when deciding on the national bird. Had Franklin had his way, we’d be looking to find national pride in the somewhat more humble turkey.
► Driving isn’t the only activity that is dangerous to mix with alcohol. Statistics show that 40 percent of skiers who get injured in the French Alps are legally drunk.
► Standing desks, stand ready: There’s a new trend in workspaces. It seems that standing up while working isn’t enough to counteract the detrimental health effects of sitting in an office chair all day. Enter Fluidstance, a company that wants to help you surf your way through the workday. Their balance boards, designed to be used with standing desks, reportedly increase heart rate and improve range of motion, allowing users to burn calories while burning their way through the mundane tasks of office life.
► The beginning of a new school year seems a good time to note the origin of that lunchtime favorite, peanut butter. A Canadian named Marcellus Gilmore Edson patented the product in 1884, but it didn’t become popular in the United States until 1898. That was when John Harvey Kellogg’s Western Health Reform Institute began selling it at expensive health care institutions. It seems that protein-packed peanut butter was perfect for elderly patients who had trouble chewing.
► Those who study such things say that men who tend to be womanizers when they’re single are more likely to be jealous husbands once they’re married.

• Only 118,287 Edsels were built, with just 2,846 vehicles produced for the 1960 model. Overall, the company lost $350 million ($2.9 billion in today’s dollars) on the venture.
This week has been a busy one in years past. Follow along as Tidbits looks at several historical events from September 3 to 9. • The Seattle Mariners stepped onto the field to face the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on September 3, 1981. Little did they know they would be playing in the longest game that stadium has never known – 20 innings – and that the game wouldn’t actually be complete until the next day. The game was tied 7-7 after 19 innings of play when it was suspended by the American League curfew rule, which stated that no inning could begin after 1 A.M. The competition was resumed the following evening prior to that night’s scheduled game. The Mariners were the victors by a score of 8-7. • September 4, 1957 marked the release of Ford Motor Company’s “car of the future,” the Edsel. Named for Henry Ford’s only son, Edsel, former president of Ford Motor Company, who had perished from stomach cancer in 1943 at age 49, the Edsel was expected to nab a large share of the market away from GM and Chrysler. Immediately, the public disliked the car, considering it unattractive and overpriced. The Edsel sold poorly right from the beginning.
