There is a tragedy unfolding today, an epidemic that goes underdiagnosed and in many times improperly treated. Today approximately 50 million Americans or 20% of the population suffer from autoimmune diseases and 75% of those affected are women. Could you be one of them? In our modern world of poor diets, increased stress and environmental toxins, autoimmune diseases are on the rise. They are now one of the top 10 leading causes of death in women under the age of 65! Autoimmunity Defined: It is the result of a misdirected immune system that causes one’s own immune system to attack the self. Even though they are a very common disorder, today most individuals with chronic symptoms rarely get tested for them. This is a standard test for all my new patients to screen for the possibility of autoimmune disorders. Researchers have now identified over 100 different autoimmune diseases, possibly you’ve already been diagnosed with one. They come with wide variety of strange names such as: Hashimoto’s and Graves’ thyroiditis, lupus, MS, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, SjĂśgren’s, reactive arthritis, IBD, FMS, and CFS. Symptoms of Autoimmunity: If you are experiencing chronic health problems with a combination of any the following symptoms you may have an autoimmune disorder: chronic joint and/or muscle pain, chronic fatigue, difficulty concentrating or focusing, weakness, numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, recurrent rashes or hives, sun-sensitivity, a butterfly-shaped rash across your face, dry eyes, mouth or skin, abdominal pains, blood or mucus in your stool, diarrhea or mouth ulcers, multiple miscarriages or blood clots. Because they come with so many different names and symptoms there is a misunderstanding among the medical community and general public that these are separate and completely different disease disorders. Even though they come with different names and can affect many different tissues and organs, at their core they all involve the same underlying correctable mechanisms. Causes of Autoimmunity: There is evidence that there is an underlying genetic component. However, these genes only get expressed or turned on by specific environmental triggers. I explained it to my patients this way, “you were diagnosed with this autoimmune disorder when your 48, yet you had the same genes since you were born. What was the trigger that made you manifest this disease now and not when you were in your 20s for example?â€? An autoimmune response is generated when your immune system overreacts with antibodies and inflammation that targets your own tissues. Your antibodies are meant to target pathological microbes such as bacteria, viruses and fungus. However, in an autoimmune disorder your immune system fails to differentiate foreign substance from your own tissues. With increased antibodies against its own self your immune system wreaks havoc on your tissues and organs. Factors that can trigger this autoimmune response are a “leaky gutâ€? leading to food allergies, nutritional deficiencies such as vitamin D3, chronic infections and toxic metals and chemicals from our environment. The Conventional Medical Response: Usually it is to prescribe a drug that suppresses your immune system. This may turn down the inflammatory response and some the symptoms for a while, but it comes at a tremendous cost. Your immune system keeps you safe from cancerous cells and infectious invaders, therefore these drugs do increase your risk for certain cancers and chronic infections. Other common side effects are rashes, G.I. disorders and they can be toxic to the liver or bone marrow. A better approach would be to go after your personal environmental factors that triggered your autoimmune response in the first place. Leaky Gut and Food Allergies, a Primary Cause: As previously mentioned a primary triggering event for an autoimmune response is an altered gastrointestinal system that eventually manifests as Leaky Gut. Very recent research has now established that this Leaky Gut is the primary driver of systemic inflammation and autoimmune responses. This makes sense when we realize that 70% of the immune system lies in our G.I. tract. A gut disorder known as SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) damages the G.I. lining and leads to Leaky Gut. SIBO is also the cause of the symptoms of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). There are specific laboratory tests to identify if you have autoimmunity, systemic inflammation, SIBO and/or a Leaky Gut. Once identified there are specific gastrointestinal healing programs that can be implemented to reverse this condition and improve your immune response. Leaky Gut also leads to increased food allergies, which I find in the majority of my autoimmune patients. Many times the autoimmune response can be reduced by identifying and removing the patient’s food allergies by using a sophisticated Alletess IgG food allergy test for 184 foods. There is a profound link between food allergies and autoimmune diseases. Other Triggers of Autoimmunity: Another underlying factor that can trigger an autoimmune response is when your genetic predisposition is turned on by toxins from heavy metals like mercury and lead, mycotoxins from molds, and chronic viral infections such as herpes simplex and Epstein-Barr. All these triggers must be identified and then removed for you to conquer your autoimmune disease. This can all be achieved with proper laboratory testing. GOLF (cont’d) • Early golf balls were created from hard leather, but around 1724, the composition was changed to a thin leather stuffed with feathers. These remained popular until 1848 when the gutta percha ball was introduced, a solid ball made from the dried sap of a Sapodilla tree. Strips of the sap were softened in boiling water, then molded by hand, and placed in cold water to harden. In 1901, the Haskell golf ball made its debut, a rubbercored ball that traveled farther than the gutta percha ball, with the added benefit of a much cheaper cost to produce. The dimples in today’s golf balls decrease aerodynamic drag, allowing the ball to fly farther. A smooth golf ball would travel about half as far as a dimpled one. A golf ball has between 300 and 500 dimples, each about 0.010 inch (0.03 cm) deep. • What is recognized as the world’s first organized golf club was founded in 1744. Established as the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith, the group would later become known as the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, a group that was responsible for drawing up the first set of official rules for the game. • Golf came to the U.S. via two Scotsmen, who first demonstrated the

During World War II, the course was closed for three years, and used to raise cattle and turkeys in support of the war effort. • Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida’s
Sawgrass Stadium Course is the permanent home of the PGA Tour’s The Players Championship. About 125,000 golf balls are hit into the water every year on the courses’s famous 17th “island” hole. • How well do you know golfing terms? Most folks know that each hole is classified by its par, which means the number of strokes a golfer should require to complete the hole. The minimum par is three – a stroke from the tee and two putts. One stroke under par is called a birdie, while two strokes under par is an eagle. Three strokes under par can be a double eagle or an albatross. The term condor refers to four strokes under par, an almost-impossible score to achieve. Only four condors have been recorded, all of which were a hole-in-one on a par-5 hole. Golfers who go over par might record a bogey (one stroke over), a double bogey (two strokes over), or a triple bogey (three strokes). • American golfer Ab Smith had an excellent shot back in 1899, and he described it as a “bird of a shot,” giving golfers the term “birdie,” one under par. • When a golfer sinks the ball into the cup on the first stroke from the tee, it’s a hole-in- one, also called an ace. The casual golfer’s odds of making a hole in one are about 12,500 to one, but change considerably for a golf pro to 2,500 to 1. Those who hope to make two holes in one during a single round are looking at odds of about 67,000,000 to 1. • Golf shots have various names, depending on how far the ball needs to be moved. The “drive” or “full swing” is the initial shot on a hole when the ball is to be moved a long distance, and typically shot with a long-shafted, largeheaded wood club known as a driver. For medium distances, the “approach” or “3/4 swing” is used. Golfers use the “chip” or “half-swing” for relatively short distances near the green. Once the ball reaches the green, the golfer “putts” the ball into the hole.

MORE GOLF BITS • Lady golfers got into the scene in 1893 when the Ladies’ Golf Union was formed in the UK, and the inaugural British Ladies’ Amateur Golf Championship was held. The U.S. Ladies’ Professional Golfers’ Association was founded in 1950, although Babe Didrikson was already a famous lady golfer by that time, having been the first American to win the British Women’s Amateur title in 1947. Although Didrikson attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open in 1948, her application was rejected because the event was open to men only. She had already won two Olympic gold medals and one silver in track and field and was an All-American basketball player before turning her attention to golf, where she won 10 major LPGA championships. • The first person to play golf on the moon was astronaut Alan Shepard while a member of the Apollo 14 crew. In February, 1971, Shepard took a six-iron and two golf balls aboard the spacecraft with him, and attempted two drives, the second of which went more than 200 yards (183 m). • If golfers want to play on the world’s highest golf course, they will have to travel to Morococha, Peru, where the Tactu Golf Club sits 14,335 feet (4,369 m) above sea level. To play on the world’s northernmost golf course, a trip to Iceland’s Akureyri Golf Club will be required. Those playing stateside will have $500 in green fees for 18 holes at America’s most expensive public course, Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas. Massachusetts is home to the world’s longest golf course, a par-77 course
measuring 8,325 yards (7,612 m). • The 1900 Paris Olympic Games included the game of golf, with 22 male and female athletes from 4 countries competing in a 36-hole game. It was an Olympic event at the following Olympics in St. Louis in 1904. The sport was absent from the Games for the next 112 years before being revived in 2016 at the Rio de Janeiro games, when 120 golfers from 41 countries participated. • Tiger Woods may have made his first hole-in- one at age six, with another 17 after that, but he’s not the youngest person to shoot one. That honor belongs to Colorado’s Coby Orr, who, in 1975, at age five, shot a hole-in-one in Littleton, Colorado. • Legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus had his first PGA Tour winnings, $33.33, at the 1962 L.A. Open. Later that year, he was the winner of the U.S. Open, receiving $17,500. He finished the year with more than $60,000 in prize money. In 1963, at age 22, he became the thenyoungest golfer to win the Masters. He won again in 1965 and 1966, becoming the tournament’s first back-to-back winner. In 1986, at age 46, Nicklaus was the oldest player to win The Masters. His final round of pro golf was the 2005 British Open, played at the St. Andrews course. • Slugger Hank Aaron may have had 3,771 hits over the course of his baseball career, but had this to say about golf: “It took me 17 years to get 3,000 hits. I did it in one afternoon on the golf course.” • America’s first 18-hole golf course was on an Illinois sheep farm, established in 1892. The nation’s first golf club opened there in Downers Grove, Illinois, the following year. The golf course is still there at the original site.

Scammers Nabbed by the VAOIG
Kansas: At least the Florida man wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t as stupid as this one. The scammer (also a veteran, unfortunately) claimed severe vision problems and collected benefits. He also drove to and from his medical appointments, with his wife switching seats with him a few blocks from the hospital. Missouri: A salesman submitted over $600,000 in phony invoices to a Department of Veterans Affairs medical facility for tools and other commercial products. This went on for three years, which raises the question: How could he hand over that many invoices without it raising some alarms? New York: A trusted fiduciary stole $71,000 from a 73-year-old disabled veteran over the course of three years. The job of a fiduciary is to spend the benefit money only on the care of the veteran. The veteran had once lived on the fiduciaryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s property, but even after he went into a veteranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home, the fiduciary kept collecting and spending the money -- on himself. This could get him 10 years in prison.

Quite often thieves are not that bright. Or maybe they have a sense of entitlement and assume that they wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get caught, or that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re somehow deserving. What they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t count on is the VAOIG -the Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General. The VAOIG is everywhere, and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re very good. Florida: A veteran was indicted on grounds of theft after claiming benefits for 100 percent disability for blindness. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d collected those benefits for 16 years. So, how did he get caught? He had a driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s license and was recorded doing yard work, washing his vehicle ... and yes, driving. He applied for a different license and handed over a doctor certificate saying his vision was 20/50. He could get up to 10 years in the (c) 2018 King Features Synd., federal pen for stealing over a Inc. half-million dollars in benefits.

A POPULAR DRINK â&#x20AC;˘ An average of 3 billion cups of tea are drunk every day around the world, with green tea being the most popular type of tea. In the U.S., 1.2 million pounds of tea leaves are used daily. â&#x20AC;˘ There are over 3,000 different varieties of tea, but all of it, whether black, green, white, or oolong comes from the same plant, Camellia sinesis, an evergreen shrub or small tree. The word â&#x20AC;&#x153;camelliaâ&#x20AC;? comes from the name of botanist Georg Kamel for whom the plant is named, and â&#x20AC;&#x153;sinesisâ&#x20AC;? comes from the Latin word for China. Different types of tea come from different leaves that are plucked from the plant, as well as the different ways the leaves are treated after being harvested. â&#x20AC;˘ Herbal teas that come from plants other than Camellia sinesis such as chamomile or peppermint are not true teas, but are instead more accurately called â&#x20AC;&#x153;infusions.â&#x20AC;? Flavored teas, on the other hand, are made of real tea with various added essences, including herbal ones. â&#x20AC;˘ The story goes that tea was discovered nearly 5,000 years ago when a camellia blossom accidentally fell into a pot of boiling water belonging to Chinese emperor Shen Nung. Whether or not the story is true, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a fact that China now cultivates some of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest tea plantations. â&#x20AC;˘ The earliest known physical evidence of tea was discovered in 2016 in the mausoleum of Emperor Jing of Han in China, proving that tea from the genus Camellia was drunk by Han Dynasty emperors as early as the 2nd century B.C. â&#x20AC;˘ China had a monopoly on tea for centuries, and export of the plants or seeds was forbidden by the Chinese government. In 1848, the Britishowned East India Trading Company hired Scottish botanist Robert Fortune to travel to China, learn the secrets of tea manufacture, and smuggle back cuttings and seeds. Fortune disguised himself as a rich merchant and succeeded in his quest. His cuttings and seeds were planted in the Britishowned territory of Darjeeling, India, where they flourished. Within his lifetime, Fortune saw India surpass China as the top exporter of tea. â&#x20AC;˘ Camellia sinensis grows in tropical climates with plenty of rain and acidic soils. It takes between three and five years before a newly planted tea shrub is ready for plucking. The higher the altitude, the longer it takes to reach maturity and the better the tea tastes. Once mature, the bush will yield tea for fifty years or more. The plant can grow to be the size of a small tree, reaching heights of 50 feet (15 m) or more, but is generally kept trimmed to the size of a shrub in order to make harvesting easier. The more it is pruned, the more new shoots appear, and it is the leaves and buds at the ends of the shoots that make the best tea. Tea is grown in over 50 countries worldwide. â&#x20AC;˘ Only the top one or two inches of the mature plant are picked. These buds and leaves are called â&#x20AC;&#x153;flushes.â&#x20AC;? A plant will grow a new flush every seven to 15 days during the growing season. The smallest leaves are the most valuable. (Continued Pg 7)

When a slice of an apple turns brown, or a banana turns black, or a grape turns into a raisin, this is the effect of the enzyme action of oxidation. Tea leaves also oxidize and turn black when left out in heat and sunlight. Black tea is made from leaves that have oxidized. Green tea is made from leaves that have not been oxidized. Oxidation makes the tea taste stronger, and it also increases the shelf life of the tea. • The way the leaves are handled after harvest results in different types and flavors of tea. The leaves may be wilted, dried, crushed, rolled, twisted, fried, or roasted. But no matter how they are treated or what they taste like, teas contain few nutrients in any significant amount. TEA HISTORY • Before the tea bag, there was the “tea egg” and the “tea ball” – perforated metal containers filled with loose leaves and dropped into boiling water. • In 1907, American tea merchant Thomas Sullivan began distributing samples of his tea in small bags of Chinese silk with a drawstring, thinking that customers would throw away the bag and place the tea leaves in a metal tea ball to brew the tea. Instead, consumers skipped the tea ball altogether and simply placed the tea bag directly into the tea pot. Sullivan knew he was on to something, and the tea bag was invented. Today, 96% of all cups of tea drunk daily are brewed using tea bags. • Thomas Twining of England opened Britain's first tea room in London in 1706, and it still operates today. The firm's logo, created in 1787, is the world's oldest in continuous use. Twining was soon selling more dried tea than brewed tea, and today Twinings sells over 50 kinds of tea world-wide. • In 1822, brothers Joseph and Edward
Tetley sold salt from a pack horse in Yorkshire, England. They started to sell tea and were so successful they set up as “Joseph Tetley & Co.” tea merchants in 1837, relocating to London in 1856. Today Tetley is the largest tea company in the United Kingdom and Canada, and the second largest in the U.S. • As a young man in Scotland, Thomas Lipton helped his parents run their grocery store. Later he opened his own store, which was so successful that he kept opening more. He engaged in innovative marketing techniques including staging parades and hiring brass bands. By 1888 he owned over 300 stores. • Around that time, the price of tea began to fall, and middle-class customers could now afford it. Spotting an opportunity, Thomas opened a tea trading office and established wholesale distribution channels that allowed working-class people to be able to easily afford tea. He bought his tea in such large amounts that he was able to undercut prices. • This was so successful that he began to invest in tea plantations. In Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) coffee plantation owners had recently suffered a coffee blight that ruined their crop, so Thomas convinced them to plant tea instead. In a time when most tea was sold by the pound, Thomas pioneered selling it in individual singleserving bags. Today Lipton is the top selling tea in the world. • Oolong tea comes from tea leaves that are long, dark, and curly like the neck of a dragon. The word “oolong” comes from the Chinese phrase meaning “black dragon tea.”

Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s celebrate July as Family Golf Month with an assortment of facts about this popular sport. â&#x20AC;˘ As early as the Roman Empire, sports enthusiasts were playing a primitive form of golf, known as paganica, which used a bent stick to hit a stuffed leather ball. The origins of our more modern game are in Scotland in the 1400s. The game of â&#x20AC;&#x153;gowfâ&#x20AC;? as the Scots called it, was so popular that in 1457, King James II of Scotland banned the sport because men were neglecting archery practice, a necessity for the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s national defense. In 1502, King James IV rescinded the ban, and actually became a golfer himself. â&#x20AC;˘ Although the Scots have been playing on the Links at St. Andrews throughout the 1400s, it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t until 1552 that it was officially chartered by the Archbishop, giving the people of St. Andrews the right to play there. Up until 1764, the Old Course at St. Andrews had 22 holes. It was re-routed into 18 holes, which became the standard for the game around the world. â&#x20AC;˘ Mary Queen of Scots, who ruled Scotland from 1542 to 1567, was an avid golfer who was strongly rebuked by her subjects for playing golf just a few days after her husband was murdered in 1567, failing to properly mourn his death. â&#x20AC;˘ Mary Queen of Scots is reportedly the one who brought the word â&#x20AC;&#x153;caddyâ&#x20AC;? to the game. She used French cadets to assist her on the course. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cadetâ&#x20AC;? is the French word for â&#x20AC;&#x153;student,â&#x20AC;? pronounced â&#x20AC;&#x153;cad-DAYâ&#x20AC;?, giving us our modern term.
