By Dr. Greg Fors, DC, Board-certified Neurologist The Problem: Do you suffer with chronic G.I. symptoms: bloating, reflux, gas, abdominal pain, diarrhea and/or constipation? Yet, your exams and conventional lab tests keep coming back normal. Worse yet, you have chronic pain with physical and mental fatigue. Possibly you have mood issues and brain fog, and you’re noticing other multiple health issues - especially digestive problems. Perhaps you have been given the worthless diagnosis of IBS or fibromyalgia and then handed a prescription for Cymbalta or a Lyrica. The Nonsense Diagnosis and Treatments: Think about it. The diagnosis of IBS is meaningless - it is just what you told the doctor - “my gut feels irritable, I have loose stools, pain and bloating!” Or, when your doctor tells you have fibromyalgia, he or she is just telling you in Latin what you told them in English: Fibro for tissues, mya for muscles and algia for hurt all over. A diagnosis of IBS and/or fibromyalgia brings you no closer to finding out the underlying causes and correction of your health problems. Whatever you call it, there are no drugs that can heal these disabling disorders. You must get to the underlying cause and correct it with proper dietary and nutritional intervention. A Primary Underlying Cause—SIBO and Leaky Gut These symptoms are all connected because the body is all connected. These syndromes are usually related to chronic systemic inflammation. Your G.I. tract plays a major role in this body-wide inflammation, because 70% of your immune system resides within your gastrointestinal tract lining. Research is now showing that an imbalance or overgrowth of small intestine bacteria, called SIBO, is a major contributing factor to chronic systemic inflammation and “feeling like crap” or FLC syndrome. SIBO--What Is It and What Causes It: SIBO is best understood as an overgrowth of bacteria and/or yeast in the small intestine that ferments the carbs and sugars in your food creating hydrogen or methane gases. As I tell my patients, they dine on your dinner! There are some telltale signs of SIBO: gas, bloating, reflux, abdominal pain or cramping, diarrhea or/and or constipation. The condition of SIBO is therefore often misdiagnosed as GERD and IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). SIBO has also been associated with Inflammatory bowel disease e.g., Crohn’s disease and colitis. The causes of SIBO are many and complex such as: low stomach acid, pancreatic enzyme insufficiency, multiple courses of antibiotics disrupting the small intestine microbiome, decreased gut motility and chronic constipation causing the bacteria to migrate from the colon into the small bowel. SIBO-Proper Diagnosis and Treatment: Besides the telltale signs and symptoms found on a good history, the gold standard lab test for SIBO is a Challenge Breath Test. This test can be ordered by a doctor knowledgeable in its use and interpretation. Once diagnosed, proper treatment must commenced, if one is to find real healing. Part of the treatment involves specific dietary changes and antimicrobial herbs to remove the overgrowth of SI bacteria. Then There is Leaky Gut: Some of the bacteria found in SIBO can produce toxins that irritate and can even damage the lining of the small intestine causing you multiple G.I. symptoms. Also, these toxins can damage the intestinal cells and the “glue” that holds them together leading to what is called “Leaky Gut”. With this, toxins, microbes, undigested food proteins, can escape from your small intestines into the bloodstream. This leaking through of undigested foods proteins, that your immune system then reacts to, is a primary cause of systemic inflammation and food allergy reactions. The list of symptoms caused by chronic inflammation and food sensitivities are endless. Want to Know More? Attend one of my FREE upcoming seminars where I will explain the role SIBO and Leaky Gut plays in your health, how they are diagnosed and how they can be corrected. SODA POP (cont’d) RECIPE FOR SODA POP • Regular soda pop (not diet) is high in sugar, with each 12-ounce can containing about 9 teaspoons of sugar. Most colas are flavored with vanilla extract and lemon oil, with a bit of lime oil, orange oil, nutmeg oil, and other flavorings. Phosphoric acid gives the drink bite, alcohol dissolves the oils, caramel (burnt sugar) gives the coloring, glycerin makes it thicker, and caffeine adds pep. FACTS ABOUT COKE • The first Coca-Cola syrup was concocted by pharmacist Dr. John Pemberton and sold by the glass in a drug store in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1886. Coca-Cola was advertised as being a “wonderful nerve and brain tonic.” Many people believe that Coke used to contain high levels of cocaine. However, even in the early days when coca leaves were used to flavor it, you would have had to drink a gallon and a half in order to get the slightest effect. • In 1905 when the Pure Food and Drug Act required all ingredients be listed on the label, Coke began to remove all traces of cocaine. Because of its connotations, they hated the nick-name

Service Prices include: Trip, labor & parts in the metro area during standard business hours “Coke” and tried for years to get people to ask for the product using the full name. Not until 1982 did the company give in, proclaiming, “Coke is it!” • They wanted the design of Coke bottles to be so distinctive that a bottle could be recognized in the dark, or if it was broken. In 1913 the prototype of the shapely bottle we still use was introduced. It had been patterned after a cola nut: bulging at the sides with ridges running the length of the bottle. • During World War II, CocaCola’s president declared that every soldier overseas should be able to buy a 5¢ Coke at any time. With that in mind, 64 bottling plants were shipped to war zones around the world. As a result, 95% of the soft drinks consumed overseas during the war were Cokes. When the war ended, the bottling plants remained, making the company the largest international soft drink company. Today Coke is the world’s largest manufacturer of carbonated soft drinks. It’s the most widely distributed product on the planet, and is the most recognized brand in the world. PEPSI vs. COKE • The inventor of Pepsi-Cola was a druggist in North Carolina named Caleb Bradham. In 1893, he began selling “Brad’s Drink” at the soda fountain in his store. Later he renamed the drink Pepsi Cola because he believed that it helped to stave off dyspepsia. When the price of sugar increased during World War I, Bradham offered to sell his company to Coca-Cola, but was turned down three times. • Charles Guth was the president of a chain of candy stores that sold Coca-Cola by the
glass, and lots of it. In 1930 his stores dispensed over 30,000 gallons of Coke’s syrup. Because he dealt in such volume, he asked the people at Coke if he could have a discount. The answer was no. Guth was so angry that he bought the Pepsi Cola Company and started selling Pepsi instead. The rivalry has been fierce ever since. • Two researchers rigged a taste test at a mall. They asked people to choose between Coke and Pepsi, but some cups labeled Coke actually contained Pepsi, and some Pepsi cups held Coke. They found that it didn’t matter what was in the cups. People who said they preferred Coke tended to choose whatever soft drink was in the cup marked Coke. Likewise, those who favored Pepsi would choose whatever was in the Pepsi cup. • An independent firm using unbiased scientific methods found that 51.7% of people in a taste test preferred Pepsi; 41.7% preferred Coke; and 6.6% had no preference. Because of this survey, Coke changed their formula, making it taste just a little more like Pepsi. Everybody at Pepsi’s headquarters got the day off to celebrate when, on Coke’s 100th birthday in 1985, they announced they were changing the formula with “New Coke.” Three months later, they went back to their old recipe amid much controversy. • Coke and Pepsi are not always on opposite sides of the fence: They were accused of cooperating in Japan in an attempt to drive Japanese soft drink manufacturers out of business. The Japanese bottlers retaliated by passing out fliers accusing Coke and Pepsi of dissolving teeth. Japanese plant workers slashed tires on Coke delivery trucks. The issue was settled when Coke and Pepsi agreed to donate $700,000 to help Japanese bottlers become more competitive. • Pepsi’s popular slogan “Come alive with Pepsi” was translated into Chinese as “Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the grave.” • The United States represents 25%
of the global soft drink market. If every drop of Coke ever made were placed in 8-ounce bottles and laid end to end, the bottles would reach the Moon and back over 2,000 times.

TIDBITS® REMEMBERS SOME FICTIONAL DOGS by Kathy Wolfe Literature, movies, television…all have been sources for these imaginary canines. Follow along as Tidbits lets these dogs out! Woof! • “Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore,” said Dorothy to her Cairn Terrier co-star in 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz.” Toto was really a female named Terry, who had had her first major film role opposite Shirley Temple in “Bright Eyes,” five years earlier. Terry had been brought to the Hollywood Dog Training School in 1932, but the owner never returned for her. The school’s owner, Carl Spitz, became her owner/trainer for the movies. Terry was paid $125 a week, more than the Munchkins, whose salaries ranged from $50 to $100. During filming of “Oz,” one of the Winkie guards accidentally stepped on the dog’s foot, breaking it. Terry was sent to recuperate at actress Judy Garland’s home, and Garland developed such an attachment to her, when filming was complete, she asked owner Spitz if she could adopt the dog, but was refused. Terry was afraid of the wind machines used to simulate the film’s tornado, as well as fearful of the steam that came out of the Tin Man’s hat. Terry appeared in 16 movies, but was only credited in “Oz.” Three years after “Oz,” her name was officially changed to Toto. • Walt Disney Studios released “Lady and the Tramp” in 1955, the 15th animated Disney film. It’s the love story of Lady, a pampered Cocker Spaniel and a stray mongrel named Tramp. Lady lives
with Jim Dear and Darling, while Tramp roams the streets, living on scraps from Tony’s Italian restaurant and dodging the dogcatcher. Early script versions had the mongrel’s name as Homer, then Rags, then Bozo. Tramp never calls Lady by her name during the film, always by her nicknames Pigeon and Kid. Disney got the idea for the film after reading a story by Ward Greene, “Happy Dan, the Whistling Dog,” in a 1943 issue of Cosmopolitan magazine. The American Film Institute ranks the movie #95 on their list of the “100 Greatest Love Stories of All Time.” • Beginning in 1954, families across America gathered in front of their television on Sunday evenings to watch “Lassie.” The legendary collie was first seen in the 1943 film “Lassie Come Home,” a film that featured the first of many dogs to follow. The original Lassie was really named Pal, a collie owned by trainer Rudd Weatherwax. Pal also appeared in the pilot of the TV series. Pal’s descendants succeeded him from then on, including Pal Jr., Spook, Baby, Mire, and Hey Hey. All of the Lassies were actually males, because females go through a substantial hormone-induced shedding process on a regular basis. In addition, the producers thought a larger dog would be more impressive on film, with males outweighing females by about 15 lbs. (6.8 kg). The Emmy-winning TV series was the fourth longest-running primetime series, running for 17 years before going into syndication. • Cartoonist Charles Schulz based his famous beagle Snoopy on his old family dog, Spike. The comic strip “Peanuts” debuted in seven newspapers in October of 1950, and by the time of Charles Schulz’ death in 2000, it was appearing in more than 2,600 papers. By 1960, the “Peanuts” gang was featured on Hallmark greeting cards and Ford Motor
Company ads, and the first television special “A Charlie Brown Christmas” came along in 1965. Snoopy’s doghouse was a focal point in the strip, with the beagle seen sleeping on top, as well as engaging in midair dogfights with fighter ace The Red Baron. In 1966, the pop song “Snoopy vs. the Red Baron” was at the top of the charts, performed by a Florida group The Royal Guardsmen. On the night before the final “Peanuts” cartoon strip was published in February, 2000, Charles Schulz succumbed to colon cancer, having produced 18,000 strips in nearly 50 years. • Cartoonist Harold Gray debuted his comic strip “Little Orphan Annie” in August of 1924 in the New York Daily News. The 10-year-old orphan had unruly, curly red hair, wore a red dress, and frequently used the phrases “Gee whiskers” and “Leapin’ lizards!” Five months after Annie’s debut, a puppy rescued her from a gang of vicious boys. Unable to keep the dog, whom she had named Sandy, Annie gave him to a restaurant owner. But in a May, 1925 strip, Sandy rescued Annie once again, this time from gypsy kidnappers, and the dog became her own. In the comic strip, Sandy is of no particular breed, but in the 1982 movie, he was played by a six-yearold otterhound named Bingo. In the 2014 remake, a golden retriever-chow mix named Marti, who was adopted from a New York City shelter, was cast in the role. • Author Norman Bridwell published his first “Clifford the Big Red Dog” in 1963, the story of an eight-yearold girl and her 25-foot-high (7.6-m) red dog. Bridwell wanted to name the dog Tiny, but his wife suggested the name Clifford after a childhood imaginary friend. The couple’s daughter Emily Elizabeth was the source of the book’s female character. There are 50 Clifford
titles, with sales of more than 126 million books. • Elroy Jetson discovered the family’s dog in the fourth episode of the popular cartoon, “The Jetsons”, which debuted in 1962. Family patriarch George Jetson declared that “an apartment is no place for a dog,” and purchased an electronic dog named Electronimo. But when the e-dog failed to catch a burglar that Astro was able to detain, Astro was in and Electronimo was out! Astro was created by Iwao Takamoto, who also designed Scooby-Doo. In fact, the two characters were both voiced by Don Messick, and both used “R”s in their speech where they shouldn’t be, such as Astro’s “Ruh-roh, Reorge!” and Scooby’s “Ruh-roh Raggy!” (Uh-oh, Shaggy!) • The 1957 Disney drama “Old Yeller” was based on the previous year’s Newbery Honor-winning book by Fred Gipson. The book, set in Texas during the 1860s, tells the story of a teenage boy left in charge of the family farm while his father is away working on a cattle drive. The boy comes across a stray yellow dog in the cornfield, and tries to shoo him away. When the dog steals meat from smokehouses and robs hens’ nests, the teenager continues his efforts to get rid of him. However, when the dog rescues the teen’s younger brother from a bear, Old Yeller earns a place in the family home. Old Yeller’s death from rabies is considered the saddest moment in all of the Disney’s films. The role of Old Yeller was played by a yellow Labrador Retriever named Spike, although Fred Gipson described the dog’s breed as a Black-Mouthed Cur in his novel. company to pay staff, the owners had to stop services. When they phoned VA, no one could help them even learn the status of their invoices. They did learn, however, of the circuitous path the invoices take across the country before actually getting to a payment department ... which cannot be reached by phone. Where are the veterans meanwhile? Right back where they started before this homecare company came into their lives ... alone, with no meal preparation, no housekeeping and in many cases unable to get to appointments. The company owners acted as responsibly as they could, giving personal notice to each veteran, and not abandoning them, yet not daring to risk the financial health of their whole business. Meanwhile, after the story made the news, the VA jumped up and said they would hold some seminars for carecompany owners. What, one wonders, would be imparted in those seminars? Hopefully, it might include the phone number of the payment department that cuts the checks.

A small home-health service in New Hampshire had to stop taking care of its 15 veterans when the Department of Veterans Affairs stopped paying the bills. Unlike major corporations, this small company was brought to its knees when unpaid invoices grew to $60,000. The problem? Lack of complete Social Security numbers on the paperwork. For years it’s been standard in many areas of life to use only the last four digits of a Social Security number; but suddenly, without warning, the VA required complete numbers. Except there was no written notice, only a recent voicemail that, truthfully, could have come from anyone. Additionally, many of the unpaid invoices go back to last year, before the new procedure took effect. After putting a lot (c) 2018 King Features Synd., of their own money into the Inc.

A lady goes to the doctor and complains that her husband is losing interest in sex. The doctor gives her a pill, but warns her that it's still experimental. He tells her to slip it into his mashed potatoes at dinner. So, that night, she does just that. About a week later, she’s back at the doctor, where she says, "Doc, the pill worked great! I put it in the potatoes like you said! It wasn't five minutes later that he jumped up, raked all the food and dishes onto the floor, grabbed me, ripped all my clothes off, and ravaged me right there on the table!" The doctor says, "I’m sorry, we didn’t realize the pill was that strong! The foundation will be glad to pay for any damages." "Nah," she says, "that's okay. We're never going back to that restaurant anyway."

Do We Trust Our Doctors?
survey, covering patients in 29 countries, showed the U.S. was at No. 24 when it comes to Americans trusting our doctors. Online physician reviews came under fire in another survey when approximately half of patients said they only somewhat trust the reviews. That’s something to consider when using those reviews to find a new doctor. What happens when we don’t entirely trust our doctor? We tend not to listen. Therefore we might not take it seriously when we’re told to cut back on sodium or get a flu shot, both of which (or anything else they tell us) can lead to health complications. What do we need for trust to either be present, or to rebuild after it’s faded? For some of us, it would be as simple as having a doctor who talks to us directly and doesn’t spend all their time inputting data into a laptop ... as though clicking boxes for our list of ailments. Hit the “Send” button and a prescription slip prints out at the other end, based on no medical intervention whatsoever.
Sitting in a medical office last week, I overheard something that sent a chill up my spine. Another patient in the waiting room was whispering to her friend that she didn’t trust the doctor. I wondered why she might feel that way. Did the doctor not keep up with the literature on new treatments for diseases or on prescription medicine that has been found to cause problems? Is the doctor being wooed by drug company reps? (Is the waiting room full of sales people with briefcases?) A survey from a few years ago revealed that doctors themselves believe that patient trust is waning. Of more than 2,000 physicians surveyed, 87 percent said that patients trust doctors less than they (c) 2018 King did 10 years ago. Another Synd., Inc.

• In 1869 in New Jersey, a fruit merchant named Joseph Campbell teamed up with an icebox manufacturer named Abraham Anderson to start up a new company. They manufactured by Janet Spencer canned vegetables, jellies, condiments, and minced meats. • In 1876 Joseph Campbell bought out Abraham’s share of the company, and subsequently reorganized and re-named the firm, naming it after himself: the Joseph A. Campbell Preserve Company. When Campbell retired, Arthur Dorrance became president of the company. In 1897, Arthur hired his nephew, John Dorrance. • John Dorrance was a gifted chemist and a graduate of MIT. He was so eager to work for the company that he agreed to work for the low salary of $7.50 per week (equal to about $200/week today), and volunteered to supply all his own equipment. • While studying in Germany, Dorrance noted that Europeans frequently ate soup, but Americans didn’t seem to favor it. The company did sell soups, but whereas they were cheap to make, they were expensive to ship. Dorrance wondered what would happen if you could remove the heaviest ingredient from the soup: the water. • After experimenting, he developed a method for cutting the amount of water in half. This made the soups far cheaper to ship, allowing the company to undercut the prices of their competitors which made the product easier to sell. At the price of ten cents a can, the convenient new product quickly caught on. By 1904 the company was selling 16 million cans of soup a year. Their very first soup was tomato, and each can contained the equivalent of five pureed tomatoes. • In 1898, a Campbell’s executive convinced the company to adopt a red and

white color scheme on the label, because he was taken by the crisp red color of the Cornell University football team's uniforms. When the soup won awards at the Paris Exhibition in 1900, a gold medal was added to the design of the label. • In 1914 John Dorrance became president of the company, and later bought out Joseph Cambell’s share of the firm. He served until 1930. A few years later, the “Mm! M'm! Good!” jingle was introduced on the radio. • Campbell Soup became one of the largest food companies in the world under the leadership of William Murphy who was elected executive vice president of Campbell Soup in 1949 and served as President and CEO from 1953 to 1972. Murphy took the corporation public and increased its brand portfolio to include Pepperidge Farm's breads, cookies, and crackers, Franco-American’s gravies and pastas, V8 vegetable juices, Swanson broths, and Godiva’s chocolates. • Campbell’s chicken noodle soup, tomato soup, and cream of mushroom soup are consistently among the top 10 food items sold in grocery stores each week. Chicken noodle is the most popular flavor of Campbell’s soup sold today in the U.S. with about 200 million cans sold each year. Chicken noodle soup was first put on the market in 1934, making it one of America’s oldest products that still makes it to the bestseller’s list. All in all, Campbell’s sells about 2.5 billion cans of soup annually in the U.S. • Today Campbell’s products are sold in about 120 countries. The company is one of the leading consumer goods companies worldwide, based on sales amounting to about $8 billion dollars annually, of which $1.29 billion consists of soups.

Thought for the Day: “I divide my officers into four groups. There are clever, diligent, stupid and lazy officers. Usually two characteristics are combined. Some are clever and diligent -- their place is the General Staff. The next lot are stupid and lazy -- they make up 90 percent of every army and are suited to routine duties. Anyone who is both clever and lazy is qualified for the highest leadership duties, because he possesses the intellectual clarity and the composure necessary for difficult decisions. One must beware of anyone who is stupid and diligent -- he must not be entrusted with any responsibility because he will always cause only mischief.” -- Kurt Freiherr von Hammerstein-Equord
► In Switzerland, it’s considered bad luck to tell anyone your baby’s name before it is born.
► In January 2018, the City of New York paid 200 formerly homeless people $85 each to pretend to be homeless again for one night. At midnight that night, in order to get an estimate of the city’s homeless population, volunteer canvassers took to the streets, approaching apparently homeless people to ask if they have somewhere to sleep. If a canvasser came across one of the paid “homeless” decoys, that decoy went home. The decoys were, essentially, a check to see how well the canvassers did their job -- and they did it pretty well, it seems, finding 90 percent of the decoys in the course of the night.

► The world’s most popular fruit is the banana. In the United States, people consume more bananas than apples and oranges put together.
► If you have spent a great deal of time in the Scottish highlands, you might be familiar with the term “sgiomlaireachd.” Evidently, the habit of dropping in at mealtimes is common enough there to require a word to describe it.

SCHWEPPE’S INVENTION • Setting up shop in England, Jacob Schweppe’s business struggled until Dr. Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles Darwin, endorsed Schweppe’s carbonated mineral water as a medicinal cure-all. Business boomed, and Jacob Schweppe sold the company at the age of 58 and retired, living comfortably until his death in 1821. Today Schweppe’s is owned by the Dr Pepper Snapple Group, and the Schweppe’s brand is distributed around the world. Continued Pg. 2
A POPULAR DRINK • German-Swiss jeweler and amateur scientist Jacob Schweppe is considered the “father of soda pop.” In 1783, he developed the first practical process to manufacture carbonated mineral water based on the earlier findings of Joseph Priestley.
A NEW DRINK • In the mid-1700s, a man named Joseph Priestley spent a lot of time at the brewery next door to his house in Glasgow, Scotland. He was intrigued by the layer of strange air which hung over the top of the beer vats. Mice, when placed in this gas, would die. Candles would go out. Sound was muffled. Water flowing through it would be filled with bubbles. He collected the gas and began experimenting. • The bubbly water tasted good, so Priestley began to hawk it as a health aid. He called it soda water. Now we know that the gas was carbon dioxide, which is given off when yeast ferments. Carbon dioxide puts the fizz into soda pop.
On any given day, half of all Americans are going to consume at least one soft drink. Come along with Tidbits as we drink soda pop!
