Functional gastrointestinal disorders such Gastritis, Reflux, GERD, bloating, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, chronic diarrhea and/or constipation are the most common GI problems in the general population. About 1 in 4 people in the U.S. have their activities limited by these disorders. These conditions also account for nearly half of the GI problems seen by doctors and are primarily caused by diet and our inability to properly handle the stress in our lives. How Stress Affects Your Life: When you’re under stress your sympathetic nervous system's (SNS) primary goal is your survival, so it elicits a ‘fight for your life or run for your life’ stress response. This sympathetic stress response is triggered by any perceived physical or emotional threat. However, in modern life, we cannot run away from a traffic jam or punch out our boss. In today's modern society chronic stress attacks us in many ways. Your body/mind can become chronically stressed due to work, relationships, finances, poor nutrition, inadequate sleep, inadequate exercise, chronic pain and disease, or any combination of the above. No matter what triggers the chronic stress, it leads to the same physiological response. When this reaction is triggered short term it leads to survival, but when triggered chronically over time, it leads to damage, especially gastrointestinal damage. How Stress Ruins Your Digestion: With chronic stress, your parasympathetic nervous system, your rest and repair system that oversees digestion, is turned down. Your sympathetic nervous system, your fight or flight system, is turned up. Under stress blood is diverted away from the GI tract to the muscles, you then have a very hard time digesting food and maintaining the gastrointestinal lining. This makes perfect sense, why worry about digestion and repair when you're running from a bear; you don't paint your house when it's on fire. Therefore, this chronic stress response leads to poor absorption of nutrition, improper GI motility and a very unhappy stomach and intestines, in other words dyspepsia, GERD, chronic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). For Example-Stress, GERD, Gastritis and Ulcers: Dyspepsia, gastritis and ulcers of the upper G.I. have been linked to stress for a long time. When it was proposed that ulcers were caused by the bacteria H. Pylori, there was much skepticism until verified by subsequent studies. Gastritis and ulcers are now known to be caused by an interaction between stress and H. Pylori bacteria. The actual mechanism is poorly understood, but it is known that stress reduces blood flow to the stomach causing a reduction of stomach secretions. Hydrochloric acid (HCL) necessary for digestion is reduced and the bicarbonate mucin that coats the stomach wall, protecting it from being digested, is also reduced. H. Pylori have also been shown to reduce stomach mucin production. When there is reduced stomach mucin coating the lining, the hydrochloric acid needed for proper digestion, can injure the stomach wall. This leads to gastritis, heartburn and even ulcers. Healing Digestive Disorders Naturally: The life altering nightmare of functional gastrointestinal disorders such as gastritis, Reflux, GERD, Leaky Gut, SIBO, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with chronic diarrhea and/or constipation and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) can be healed naturally once and for all and without dangerous drugs. First and foremost, dietary changes must be taken to remove any offending agents that may be damaging your G.I. tract, such as junk food and food allergies. Then, proper supplemented nutrients must be utilized to help repair the gastrointestinal tract. Laboratory testing such as a Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis can be extremely helpful in identifying what nutritional support is necessary. After instituting proper nutritional support, it is vital that patients are properly trained in how to handle their stress. These exceptional healing modalities will be discussed and demonstrated at my upcoming Stress and Gastrointestinal Problems at the Pain and Brain Healing Center. I will also discuss how you can conquer these baffling and disabling health problems. Want to know more, attend one of my upcoming FREE SEMINARS!
