• The Queen’s weekend retreat, Windsor Castle, is about an hour from London. It was built by William the Conqueror, and completed in 1086. It’s the world’s oldest and largest occupied castle, and has been inhabited by 39 British monarchs. William chose the site as a prime location to guard the western approach to London.

• During the 1170s, the original wood walls of Windsor Castle were replaced with stone and additional apartments were added by King Henry II. Huge additions were constructed in the 1360s and 1670s. A tragic fire in 1992 damaged or destroyed one-fifth of Windsor Castle when a spotlight ignited a curtain. More than 1.5 million gallons of water were needed to put out the fire over the course of 15 hours. Over the next five years, $50 million was spent restoring the castle.

• Kensington Palace was Queen Victoria’s birthplace and childhood home.

There were only two stationary camera angles. ▲ On Aug. 31, 1955, William Cobb of General Motors demonstrates his 15-inch-long “Sunmobile,” the world’s first solar-powered automobile, at an auto show in Chicago. ▲ On Aug. 27, 1967, Brian Epstein, manager of the Beatles, is found dead of an accidental drug overdose in his Sussex, England, home. This country retreat was the wedding gift from Queen Victoria to her son Edward in 1862. It’s the royal tradition to spend Christmas at Sandringham.

• Anmer Hall, built in the 18th century, is part of the Sandringham estate and was a wedding gift from Queen Elizabeth to William and Catherine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

• Hillsborough Castle is the British royal family’s home in Northern Ireland, an 18th-century country house, purchased by the British government in 1922. It’s also the official residence of that country’s Secretary of State.

• Half a mile (800 m) south of Windsor is Frogmore House, a 10-bedroom house that was purchased by Queen Charlotte in 1792. Queen Victoria gifted it to her mother in 1840. The estate has been called such since Queen Victoria had breakfast there in 1875, and commented on the “immense number of little frogs,” which she found “quite disgusting.” The estate is located in a low-lying, marshy area near the River Thames where these amphibians are found in abundance.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had their wedding reception at Frogmore House, and have recently moved into Frogmore Cottage, a 10-bedroom home on the grounds.

• Scotland is home to two royal residences, Balmoral Castle and the Palace

of Holyrood House. If the Queen is on an official visit, she stays at Holyrood, while Balmoral is a private residence. Balmoral Castle, located in Aberdeenshire, was a gift to Queen Victoria from her husband Prince Albert in 1852. An older castle was demolished because it was too small, and the current castle was completed in 1856.

It’s a working farm of about 50,000 acres (20,000 ha), with herds of deer, cattle, and ponies, along with a private golf course and 150 buildings. The grounds are also home to the Royal Lochnagar Single Malt whiskey distillery. A sevenbedroom stone house, Craigowan Lodge, a mile from the main castle, was a retreat for Charles and Diana during their marriage. Another residence on the property, Birkhall, dating to 1715, is the summer retreat for Charles and Camilla.

• Holyrood House got its start as an Edinburgh monastery in 1128. James IV rebuilt it as a palace in 1501 for his bride, the sister of Henry VIII. Mary, Queen of Scots also spent the majority of her life there.

• Prince Charles is also the Duke of Cornwall, which entitles him to the island property, Tamarisk, on the island of St. Mary’s, in the Isles of Scilly off the tip of Cornwall. When in Wales, the Prince stays at Llwynywermod, his 192-acre (0.78 sq. km) estate in Carmarthenshire.

MONTGOMERY WARD By: Kathy Wolfe This week marks the anniversary of the first mail-order catalog. On August 18, 1872, 29-year-old Aaron Montgomery Ward issued his company’s first catalog.

Tidbits has the facts on this famous entrepreneur!

• New Jersey-born Aaron Montgomery Ward moved to Michigan with his family at age 9. At 14, he became an apprentice in a barrel stave factory, working at a cutting machine for 25 cents a day. He advanced to stacking bricks in a kiln for 30 cents per day.

• Ward’s next move was a sales position in a shoe store in a Michigan store. Here, his retail skills were honed and within nine months, he had become

the salesman in a country store that offered a salary of $6 per month, plus board. It didn’t take long for the ambitious young man to be promoted to manager of the store with his salary raised to $100 a month.

• Shifting to a job as a traveling salesman, Ward sold dry goods to rural Midwestern Americans. It disturbed the young man that these folks were being overcharged at the small town general stores, usually the only outlet available for merchandise. As a result, he, along with two partners, opened his first mailorder house. The men had raised $1,600 for the venture, which started up in a small shipping room.

• Ward was able to offer his customers a much greater variety than was available in their communities, and by eliminating the “middle man,” was able to cut costs and offer a better price.

In 1872, he designed and mailed out his first “catalog,” a single sheet 8 in x 12 in (20 x 30 cm) price list of 163 items, along with instructions for ordering and pick-up

at the nearest train station.

• The next year his partners left him, and Ward continued to expand his offerings and catalog. His brother-in-law joined up shortly afterward. By 1883, the “Wish Book,” as Ward’s catalog was popularly known, was 240 pages featuring 10,000 items. In 1888, annual sales reached $1 million.

• In 1895, Ward experienced his first significant competition when Richard Warren Sears released his general merchandise catalog. Sears had been using printed mailers since 1888, but just to advertise watches and jewelry. In 1895, he added sewing machines, sporting goods, musical instruments, saddles, baby buggies, clothing, eyeglasses, and a host of other products. By 1900, while Ward had total sales of $8.7 million, Sears had rung up $10 million. In the struggle for dominance, in 1904, Ward mailed out 3 million catalogs, each weighing 4 lbs.

• Not everyone loved the Wish Book. It was an object of scorn to rural

retailers and was even burned publicly by small town businesses.

• In 1908, Ward moved his company headquarters to a 1.25-millionsquare-foot (116,000 sq. m) building along the Chicago River, where the company stayed until 1974, when they moved to a new building.

• When Montgomery Ward died in 1913, after 41 years of heading up his catalog business, annual sales were $40 million. Thirteen years after his death, the company opened its first retail store, located in Plymouth, Indiana. Within just two years, 244 stores were in operation, and a year later, that number was 531.

• Montgomery Ward’s place was firmly forged in history in 1946 when a New York book society exhibited the catalog alongside Webster’s Dictionary as one of the top 100 books with the most influence on American life and culture.

Forbes magazine has ranked Aaron Montgomery Ward as the 16th most influential businessman of all time.

Now and then a local funeral home will put out word for nearby residents to attend the funeral of a veteran without family. Use it as the clearing house for any plans you might make, such as for “Taps” or notifying veteran motorcycle groups. That way you won’t be duplicating efforts.

Ask specifically what they need. It might be they only require your attendance and anyone else you can bring with you. Either way, the veteran can receive military honors, including “Taps” and a gun salute, often performed by the American Legion if the burial takes place in a civilian cemetery.

If asked to attend the funeral of a veteran without family, please try to go. While they don’t have a biological family, these veterans do have a military family -- us.

To learn more, there are Unclaimed Remains Burial Resources and Unclaimed Veteran Remains fact sheets available on the VA’s cemetery website (www.cem.va.gov). Also look online for the Dignity Memorial Homeless Veterans Burial Program (www.dignitymemorial.com).

When a veteran dies and there is no family to tend to the details, the cremated remains will sometimes stay in storage for years. They’re called Unclaimed Veterans. If the eventual burial takes place in a Department of Veterans Affairs cemetery, it’s called an Unattended Interment.

Sometimes these veterans are homeless; sometimes they’re in a care facility. Sometimes no one knows the whole truth unless VA paperwork is found in the veteran’s belongings.

I know of three situations in the past six months where veterans with no relatives were buried -- yet hundreds and thousands showed up at their funerals. THIS WEEK IN MUSIC By: Kathy Wolfe Hot August days brought hot music during this week in history. Sing along with Tidbits as we bring you these musical facts.

• This week was an eventful one in the history of the Beatles. On August 18, 1960, the group gave their first public performance at the Kaiserkeller in Hamburg, where they were required to play six or seven hours a night, seven days a week. On the same day in 1964, they arrived in San Francisco for their second visit to America.

The Fab Four released “She Loves You” in the UK on August 23, 1963, and on August 19, 1967, “All You Need Is Love” became the Number One hit in the U.S. Tension was building in the band by 1968, and on August 22 of that year, Ringo quit the Beatles, walking off during a recording session. The drummer borrowed a friend’s yacht and for the next 13 days, did some resting and song-writing. His absence was

not reported to the press, and during those days, Paul McCartney filled in on the drums, enabling the group to finishing recording “Back in the U.S.S.R.” and “Dear Prudence.” They sent Ringo a telegram, lauding his abilities and asking him to return, which he did on September 4.

• In other Beatles’ news, on August 23, 1974, John Lennon reported seeing a UFO in New York City, and on August 24, seven years later, Mark David Chapman was sentenced to 20 years to life for Lennon’s murder.

• Jimi Hendrix and his band Gypsy Sun and Rainbows closed out the Woodstock Music & Art Fair on August 18, 1969, the final musician to perform during the four-day concert. Held in New York state on Max Yasgur’s dairy farm, the event was attended by 400,000 people. Woodstock was the scene of Hendrix’s now-famous rendition of the U.S. national anthem. In 1969, Hendrix was the world’s highest-paid rock musician. In September of 1970, he was dead at age 27.

• August 18, 1962 marked the day that the American folk group Peter, Paul, & Mary released their first hit “If I Had a Hammer.” Their debut album, which included that song, along with “Lemon Tree,” “500 Miles,” and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” was in the Top Ten for 10 months, with seven weeks at Number One. It eventually sold over two million copies, making it double platinum.

• August was a big month for Elvis Presley over the years. On August 18, 1956, his double-sided recordings of “Hound Dog” and “Don’t Be Cruel” reached Number One on the charts. Four days later the 21-year-old Elvis began filming his first movie, “Love Me Tender,” and two days later, he recorded the title song from that film. The King appeared in concert 143 times in 79 different cities that year. Four years later, on August 16, Elvis was filming his sixth movie, “Flaming Star.” In August of 1965, he was hard at work on his 21st film, “Paradise, Hawaiian Style.” Elvis’ final Vegas show opened at the Hilton on August 18, 1975. He was overweight and in such poor health that on August 20, after five shows in three days, his act was cancelled. His life was on a downward spiral, and on August 16, 1977, he died in Memphis at age 42.

• “My Sharonna” by the Knack enjoyed 42 days in the #1 spot on the charts after landing in that position on August 19, 1979.

These pre-made meals can be expensive, but it’s worth it at least now and then to have a full frozen meal you only need to heat. If you search online for “meal delivery programs for seniors,” most of them have a full range of meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner, sides and dessert. Many have a weekly special with big discounts.

Compare a few different company websites. Some sites are better than others in categorizing the different foods and presenting the nutrition information.

Certainly the prices vary from one to the other. Be sure to click on Senior to be sure you’ll get menus customized for us.

If you order pre-made meals, it’s one more reason to sign up for the alerts put out by the Food and Drug Administration for foods that have been found to contain salmonella or Listeria. ● It may be hard to believe, but there is an official competition to see who can sit in a sauna the longest. The World Sauna Championships have taken place in Heinola, Finland, annually by: Samantha Weaver since 1999. The starting temperature is 110 F, and a liter of water is poured on the stove every 30 seconds. The winner is the last person who is able to leave the sauna without assistance. Competitors participate at their own risk, and they are required to sign a waiver agreeing not to take legal action against the event organizers.

● It seems no one can adequately explain why women tend to strike matches away from themselves while men tend to strike them toward themselves.

Tidbits travels across the pond this week to see how the royals live.

• When in London, Queen Elizabeth stays at Buckingham Palace, the official royal residence since 1837. It’s also the administrative headquarters of the monarchy.

The palace has 775 rooms, including 52 royal and guest bedrooms, 188 bedrooms for staff, 92 offices, and 78 bathrooms. It’s the London residence of Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, as well as that of the Queen’s youngest son, Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, and his wife Sophie, when they are not at their country home, Bagshot Park. Princes Charles and Andrew were both born in the Palace.

• King George III, the grandfather of Queen Victoria, purchased Buckingham House in 1761 for his wife, Queen Charlotte, for use as a family retreat. Oddly enough, George had never met Charlotte until their wedding day.

Fourteen of their 15 children were born in the house.

• In 1826, George IV undertook the project of turning Buckingham House into a palace, doubling its size.

• Three weeks after Queen Victoria ascended to the throne in 1837, she moved into Buckingham Palace from Kensington Palace.

• After Victoria married and began having children, she had another wing added to accommodate guest bedrooms and nurseries for her children, which eventually would total nine.

• Buckingham’s balcony has been the scene of many famous moments, including the first public kiss of Charles and Diana and William and Catherine. Queen Elizabeth stands there for her official birthday celebrations. The first public appearance was in 1851, when Victoria stepped out for the opening celebration of The Great Exhibition, London’s World’s Fair.
