From always being at the forefront of the development of golf in the U.S., Minnesota is now one of the hotbeds of the game. In fact, Golf Digest Magazine’s 2008 list of America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses, has four from Minnesota in the top 60, more than California. Minne'snowda is ranked fourth highest in US golf destinations, behind Florida, Arizona and South Carolina and is the only state to have hosted all 13 USGA national championships, plus the Walker and Curtis Cup. It also hosted the 1932, 1954, 1959, 2002, and 2009 PGA Championships, the 2008 U.S. Women’s Open, and will host the 2016 Ryder Cup (Hazeltine) There's a ton of Minnesota golf history. It's buried under an airport runway in Richfield, a baseball field in Winona, a guy's driveway in Gem Lake and on the courses you are walking on today. It's where Bobby Jones won the third leg of the Grand Slam at Interlachen in 1930. Where in Maplewood the likes of Tommy Bolt and Ken Venturi won St. Paul Opens at Keller in the 1950s; By the way, when Keller began hosting the St. Paul Open professional tournament in 1930, to cover the tournament, KSTP pushed a radio transmitter around the course in a baby carriage. Chaska is where giant-killing Y.E. Yang cut down Tiger Woods in the 2009 PGA Championship at Hazeltine, and where after practicing in 1970, Jack Nicklaus declared it to be the most difficult course he’d ever played in a U.S. Open. In fact, many of the leading pros played poorly in that tournament, and criticized the course design. Course architect Robert Trent Jones shot back, “If it’s short, flat, dull courses that the pro golfers prefer, they can order them out of the Sears, Roebuck catalog. Let's always remember Minneapolis native Patty Berg, who learned to play golf at Interlachen in Edina, and went on to become a founding member of the LPGA, and one of the sport’s all-time great players. The first golf course in St. Paul was the Town & Country Club and was indirectly an offshoot of the St. Paul Winter Carnival—founded in 1887 by a Carnival crew looking for year-round recreation in the Capital City. The first course in Minneapolis was Bryn Mawr. The University of Minnesota purchased its golf course in 1926, and Tom Lehman, winner of the 1996 British Open hails from the U of M’s golf program. Zelda Fitzgerald, wife of F. Scott, was the better golfer, but, according to one biographer, both were equally big partiers and lived it up “Gatsby style.” They wreaked such havoc at the White Bear Lake Yacht Club clubhouse during the summer of 1922, that they were finally kicked out. America’s first fairway watering system was invented by Minikahda greenskeeper Charles Erickson and was, in part, the reason Minikahda hosted the U.S. Open in 1916. According to the National Golf Foundation, Minnesota consistently ranks near the top in golfer participation with more people per capita playing the game than any other state in the union. About one resident of every five hits the links each year. Not suprising consideriing that nearly 90 percent of over 500 golf courses in the Gopher state are open to the public. And, listen, while you are trying to hit the little ball it's always best to forget... In the Land of 10,000 Lakes, water is always in play.

PAUL ANKA • One O off the th world’s ld’ favorite f it crooners hails from Ottawa, Ontario. Born in Canada in 1941 to restaurantowning parents of Lebanese descent, Paul Anka began singing in the St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Church choir at age 12. By 13, he had formed his own group, the Bobbysoxers. • A school contest when he was 13 changed the course of Anka’s life. He collected Campbell’s soup labels for three months and won a trip to New York City, where he determined he was going to make it in the music industry. By 14, he had recorded his first single, “I Confess.” • At 16, Anka headed back to New York and was granted an audition at ABC-Paramount Records, singing “Diana.” The studio signed him immediately and “Diana” quickly skyrocketed to Number One, and continues to be one of the best-selling 45s in music history, with sales of over 9 million copies. Following up with four more singles, Anka was firmly in place as a universal teen idol. • In the late 1950s Anka was traveling the world, singing such hits as “Put Your Head on My Shoulder” and “Hey There, Lonely Boy.” While touring Great Britain and Australia with Buddy Holly, Anka composed “It Doesn’t Matter Anymore” exclusively for Holly, and Holly recorded it shortly before his fatal plane crash in 1959. At age 18, Anka generously bestowed his composer’s royalties on Holly’s widow. • While enjoying a career as a recording star, Anka began songwriting in earnest. He composed the 1960 hit “Puppy Love” inspired by his brief teen romance with Mouseketeer Annette Funicello. At age 19, he wrote the theme song to the hit move The Longest Day, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Song. He was also given a part as an army private in the film. • In 1962, Anka wrote the theme song for The Tonight Show, during Johnny Carson’s tenure. During Carson’s heyday, Anka earned $900,000 annually in royalties for just that one song. It’s estimated the song has been played close to a million-and-a-half times. • Paul Anka has written more than 900 songs, including Frank Sinatra’s signature tune “My Way” and Tom Jones’ biggest hit “She’s a Lady.” Sinatra also became noted singing Anka favorites “Fly Me to the Moon’ and “I’ve Gotta Be Me.” Connie Francis, Barbra Streisand, and The Doobie Brothers have had hits with his compositions. The voice of Elvis Presley can heard singing Anka’s “Blue Christmas” every holiday season. • Anka was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame n the U.S. in 1993, and into the Canadians Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 2008. He’s had a song on the Billboard charts in every decade since his 1957 debut, including singles in the Top 50 during five different decades. Anka has recorded 125 albums, including songs in Japanese, German, Spanish, French, and Italian. Worldwide, he’s sold more than 15 million records. In recent years, he has gravitated to bigband arrangements of popular standards. At 72, he still performs on a regular basis as well as appearing on a motivational speaker circuit. In his words, “I’ve always believed that if you don’t stay moving, they will throw dirt on you.”

Cutting Boards? Vinegar will disinfect. Using water and dishwashing detergent can weaken surface wood fibers on cutting boards and butcher block countertops. To disinfect and clean your wooden surfaces, wipe them instead with full-strength white vinegar after each use. The acetic acid in the vinegar is a good disinfectant, effective against such harmful bugs as E. coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus. When your wooden cutting surface needs deodorizing as well as disinfecting, spread some baking soda over it and then spray on undiluted white vinegar. Let it foam and bubble for five to ten minutes, then rinse with a cloth dipped in clean cold water. Lemons will remove odor. If your cutting board smells after you chop onions, crush garlic, cut raw and cooked meat and chicken, or prepare fish, get rid of the odor and help sanitize the cutting board by rubbing it all over with the cut side of half a lemon. You can also wash your cutting board in undiluted lemon juice from a bottle. Baking soda will deep clean. Keep your wooden or plastic cutting board cleaner by occasionally scrubbing it with a paste made from 1 tablespoon each baking soda, salt, and water. Rinse thoroughly with hot water.

New Home Monitor Learns Your Habits If you were to get to the point where you’re forgetting to eat or take your medications, how long would it be before someone noticed a change in your routine? For an initial $150 and then $20 a month, seniors and those who care about them can have peace of mind with a gadget called the Lively Sensor. The Lively Sensor is ... amazing. Here’s how it works: Small monitors (six of them,

www.rockwoodsjamfest.com the size of a quarter) are attached to various items in the home -- the pill container, refrigerator door, TV remote, keychain, front door -- that you touch or move on a daily basis. The idea is to attach the monitors to things that are sure to be a clue that all is not well if the monitors aren’t moved. The sensors get to know your habits. The Lively Sensor gets the signals in a central hub in your house (you don’t need Internet). Your loved ones can use a cellphone or computer to check the “log” of your activities. Yes, the Lively Sensor is a monitor, and no, none of us want to be watched. But the alternative -being forced to move into a retirement building -- isn’t our first choice. And you do have control over where the monitors are attached. If you’re not on the Internet and don’t always
get the latest photos of your grandkids, there’s the LivelyGram, mailed to your house twice a month with pictures and messages from your family, as part of the Lively setup. If you’d like to learn more, go online to www. mylively.com (check at the library if you don’t have a computer), or call 1-888-757-0711 to ask for a brochure to be mailed to you. ▲ In 1943, then-chairman of IBM, Thomas Watson, went on the record saying, “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.” ********************* Thought for the Day: “If a window of opportunity appears, don’t pull down the shades.” -- Tom Peters
▲ In Ireland, the police do not carry firearms. Their only weapons are batons and pepper spray.
▲ Those interested in maritime history (and practically everyone else, for that matter) are familiar with the story of the Titanic, which struck an iceberg and sank on the night of April 15, 1912. It’s interesting to note, though, that in 1898 a book called “Futility,” by Morgan Robertson, described an almost identical scenario: The ship in the novel was called Titan, and, like the Titanic, it was trying to break a speed record for crossing the Atlantic. The Titan was declared to be unsinkable, and it didn’t have enough lifeboats for all the passengers. On its fictional voyage in the month of April, it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean and sank, resulting in the deaths of almost all the passengers.
▲ In a recent survey, more Americans said they would have a hard time giving up the Internet than said they’d have a hard time giving up TV.
▲ If you’re like 87 percent of American adults, you use the Internet. The only thing I find surprising about this statistic is that there are 13 percent of adults who don’t use it.
▲ Even a chameleon that is born blind can take on the colors of its environment.
▲ Nobel and Pulitzer prize-winning author John Steinbeck did not start out his career as a great success. In fact, his first novel, “Cup of Gold,” was a complete flop, not even earning enough money to cover the advance the publishing house paid him. He was not discouraged, however; after the book’s publication Steinbeck wrote to a friend, “The book was an immature experiment. ... The next one won’t be good, nor the next one, but about the fifth, I think I will be above the average.”
▲ If you just can’t seem to resist shouting sometimes, you may suffer from klazomania.
▲ Those who are looking for love might want to consider the following statistics: In a 2013 survey, a quarter of adults said that their spouse/partner is not the type of person they thought they’d settle down with. More than half of respondents said that their significant other is their complete opposite.
▲ You may be surprised to learn that the average American man spends 10,585 hours hanging out in a bar. Or you may not.
▲ Those who study such things say that a new mom accumulates anywhere from 450 to 700 hours of lost sleep during the first year after her baby is born.

Since April is National Frog Month, it only seems fitting for Tidbits to bring you the facts on these little creatures. • Frogs are amphibians, meaning they are cold-blooded and split their time between land and water. Their body temperature changes depending on their surroundings. If it’s cold, certain frogs dig underground burrows or hole up in the mud of ponds. • More than 4,700 species of frogs can be found around the world. The U.S. is home to about 90 species. Frogs can survive in an astonishing variety of climates and live on every continent except Antarctica. It’s not just warm tropical climates they thrive in – they also dwell in deserts and on mountaintops. Some wood frogs live north of the Arctic Circle, subsisting for weeks in a frozen state. The glucose in the frog’s blood acts as an antifreeze that collects in the vital organs, preserving them while the body freezes. • The front legs of a frog have four toes each, and the back legs have five toes. While aquatic frogs’ legs are longer and stronger to help them swim, land-dwelling frogs have shorter legs for walking and climbing. The tree frog’s large round toe pads act as suction cups to help it grip branches.
