We’re here to develop boys into good men and good football players.”Finally, Heiderich also spoke on how parents can give their support to their kids in the football team.

Chargers change divisions, have championship aspirations

The Isle of Wight Academy Chargers come into the 2022 fall season looking to improve on last season. IWA gar nered six wins last year after coming off a year where the team could not play any games because of COVID-19 the yearThingsprior.will look a little different for the Chargers as they will be moving from Virginia Independent Schools Ath letic Association (VISAA) Division II to Division III. They graduated 10 seniors from last year’s team, but head coach Dale Chapman is excited about the op portunities it will present for this year’s team.

Good Luck To All The Teams!

“We have a lot of kids that are going to be thrust into different roles this sea son,” Chapman said. “We are excited about it. We have a large group of kids; it’s the largest number of guys I’ve had on a team in a while. It’s a good mixture of some of the older guys we have re turning with some of our newer kids.”

BY NIQKO MARSHALL Contributing Writer

“There will be some advantages the other schools we play on our schedule have that we don’t, but we are looking forward to competing,” Chapman said. “We are going to take it week by week and make sure every time we step on the field; we are putting our best 11 guys out there on offense and defense.”

After having a senior start under cen ter for the Chargers last year, IWA will return this year with a new face. Sopho more Jason Chapman will start at quar terback.Eventhough it will be his first year starting, coach Chapman is expecting the guys around him to help ease his transition. Jackson Cofer will return as a senior and will have a new role for the Chargers going from receiver to running

The outlook on the season internally doesn’t change for the Chargers. Re gardless of how a season went the year before or how good or bad spectators believe their team to be any season, the Chargers always have championship as pirations.“Weexpect to be in that last game of the season,” Chapman said. “We always have championship goals here. Some may think those are lofty goals, but that’s Isle of Wight football and some thing we always pushed in the mind of our players.”

back. Dorian Batten will also join Cofer in the backfield, while Jude Powell will carry over his playmaking from last sea son from the receiver position to tight end.“We have some guys returning that have done some good things for us in the past,” coach Chapman said. “We will have guys moving around doing differ ent things. There will be some growing pains at the quarterback position, but we have some guys that can help out in the backfield and out wide with some playmaking.”IWAwillhave a tough schedule this year as they open up with Atlantic Shores Christian School, the reigning VISAA Division II champions. They will also face Portsmouth Christian School, the reigning VISAA Division III champi ons. Most of the schedule will consist of schools outside of IWA’s division, but it is a challenge Chapman believes his

The team is coming off a 2021 season in which it went 2-9 and missed the playoffs, but Hill has high expectations for the 2022 squad, anticipating a return to the postseason.“Weexpect to make the playoffs,” he said. “We should be able to make a run, if everything falls in place, and that’s going to be with the young guys getting experience, really catching on, and the older guys leading the way. We should be able to make a run.”

The Broncos open the season Thursday, Sept. 1, at Amelia County High School. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Senior Shawn Battle will provide a veteran presence on the offensive line, where he will alternate playing guard and tackle, and he will also play defensive tackle.

The coach pinpointed a game on the schedule that will give him a good, early idea of where Franklin is at in its development this season — the Sept. 15 game at Essex High School, the Broncos’ third game.“That’s going to give us two games under our belt to go out and make adjustments, and by game three, it should really be clicking with the guys,” Hill said.

Perry, Bailey and Battle are all returning starters.Hillnoted that two significant rivalry games are on the schedule this season, including the Oct. 21 home game against Sussex Central High School and the regular season finale Nov. 4 at Southampton High School.

Several players have stood out to Hill as those whom he is going to be counting on to lead the Broncos on the field.

Franklin High School’s varsity football team enters the 2022 season with a new head coach in Lamont Hill, who is a former Broncos football player with experience coaching in the sport, including a year as a Franklin varsity assistant coach.

The team features about 43 players, including 12 seniors. Hill said the roster is heavy with seniors and freshmen.

“He’s going to be the anchor of both lines,” Hill said.

He first highlighted senior Derrick Perry, who will be contributing at running back and defensive back.

Parker looks for his team to achieve even greater success this season.

“He’s going to end up being the quarterback of that defensive line,” Parker said. The one returning starter in Southampton’s linebacking corps is junior Levintae Brown.Junior

Southampton was set to open its season on the road Friday, Aug. 26, against Poquoson High School.

Then, Southampton will look to earn a Region 3A win and march on to claim a regional title.

He acknowledged that there is a stairstep process to Southamptonthis.went 6-4 last year, reaching the Region 3A quarterfinals.

“We’re looking for some big things from our returning running back too,” Parker said, referencing senior Alvin Hicks Jr.

On offense, senior Whitman Clark will be back under center after having been switched into the quarterback role around the midpoint of last season.

“In our vision statement, we have in there that we want to be a football program that is doing the right things in order to win district, region and state championships,” he said.

He pointed out that the seniors have realized the younger players will do as they do, so the elder players have successfully exemplified how to perform and act as an athlete. Consequently, they have rarely had to use their voices to lead. The 2022 Southampton squad is composed of around 45 players, with about 15 seniors, 15 juniors and 15 sophomores.

“We have a couple of ninth-graders that have been looking really good that could possibly make the varsity roster as well, but there’s only about two or three of those,” Parker said.

“That’s our goal and what we’re working toward,” Parker said.

“It’s not just (that) we lost three seniors, but we really lost three really, really good football players, so therefore we’ll just be less experienced at that position,” Parker said. “However, the guys that are being put in those positions are working hard and doing well.”

Tremir Roberts and senior Jaeden Warren return at the defensive back position.

The Indians will miss three veteran starters on its defensive line that graduated earlier this year and are now playing college football.

The coach noted that in recent years, about a third of the Southampton varsity team has been composed of seniors. That was true for the 2021 season, and it is true for the 2022 campaign as well.

“I really love the way that this year’s senior class has stepped up as a whole and really exhibited leadership since even just before practice started, even in our summer workouts,” Parker said.

“If we are going to use the word meaningfully, we must restrict it to a group of individuals who have learned how to communicate honestly with each other, whose relationships go deeper than their masks of composure, and who have developed some significant commitment to rejoice together, mourn together, to delight in each other, and to make others’ conditions our own.”

“Every team, every year, you change up athletes and everything,” he said. “However, (Poquoson’s) system is fundamentally sound, and it is a good team to go up against to really be able to see where you are, because they don’t ever change.”

“So we have our stair-step goals that we definitely need to accomplish that’ll get us to where we want to be,” Parker said.

Thank you, for making others’ conditions your own in supporting Early Childhood Development for Western Tidewater.

In an Aug. 17 interview, Parker stated that he was expecting that game to be the litmus test revealing where his team is at in its development process.

“Our ultimate goal is to win some championships this year,” he said. “And the first championship that we have our eyes on is the Tri-Rivers District championship.”Thistitle will belong to the Indians if they achieve another one of their goals — going undefeated.

The offensive line features two returning starters — senior center Hunter Darden and junior Kashawn Marrow.

The one returning starter on the defensive line is senior Juelz Cooper

Southampton High School Head Coach Travis Parker made it clear that the 2022 Indians have championship goals.
