FRANKLIN There’s no one opponent in particular that the Franklin High School Broncos aim to defeat this season on the football field. No grudge matches are in the making. “We focus on everybody,” said head coach Darren Parker. “We take it one game at a time.” He said this a little more than a week before facing Lancaster in a scrimmage game on the Aug. 19. That focus goes on “week by week, day by day and hour by hour,” Parker said, adding that the Broncos don’t underestimate anyone. “We take everybody seriously.” The same could be said for the Broncos themselves. Everyone who plays gets the attention and training they need. There are 14 seniors this year, the average being 10 to 15. Lots of juniors and sophomores are on hand, and even freshmen have been around. “We’re a Power I team — a running
team,” he said to describe the Broncos’ style. A lot of time has gone into training, particularly the special teams. That’s not to say that offense, defense and coaching are less important this season or any other. Consider the latter group for example. Parker said that he and several of the other coaches have been working together for over 10 years. That consistency counts for a lot. They keep other in check, as he puts it, and a bond has developed to where they regard each other as brothers. They look also upon the players as their sons, and recognize that they are seen as father figures, which the men take seriously. When the occasion has arisen in the past, former players will come around and speak to the active roster about being prepared and earning good grades. The hope is that lessons learned on the field can carry over into their everyday lives and even beyond to where they’ll eventually become great fathers themselves one day. “Football is just a thing that brings us together,” Parker said, later adding his customary, “God is always great.”

Chargers prepared for what comes ahead in football STEPHEN H. COWLES STAFF WRITER stephen.cowles@tidewaternews.com
COURTLAND This season, Dale Chapman is going into his 24th year as head coach for the Isle of Wight Academy football team, and taking the players into what they all naturally hope will be a winning season. At the time of the interview a couple of weeks ago, the emphasis seemed to be on defense that evening. Some of the players for the defense are veterans and have a bit of size on them,
which should be a plus for the Chargers. Overall, it’s more important that the team members know their assignments. There are new guys on the field, such as a quarterback and a couple of wide receivers. Four seniors and two juniors are helping to lead the team: linebacker Zach Hinson, quarterback Jordan Baines, wide receiver Kelvin Jackson; back, quarterback James Ricks, junior captain Jared Dashiell and offense back Colton Heard, both juniors. The first real test of everyone’s mettle will be on Friday, Aug. 26, when the Chargers host Atlantic Shores High School at 7 p.m.

“We’ll be doing all the fundamental stuff dealing with football.” The previous two Fridays, the Dukes played against West Point/Richmond Christian and then Amelia, and Greenbrier Christian in scrimmage games. “Everyone dressed. Everyone played. We came out healthy,” he said, acknowledging, “There are some things we’ve got to work on. We’re still going to be coaching.” Naturally, there’ll be the teaching of different positions and the aforementioned basics. Parrish added, “We’re a young football team [this season]. You’ve got to develop your players and your depth. But our leaders are doing a good job.” The first game of the season is on Friday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. That’s when Windsor will host Prince Edward County.
WINDSOR Some things don’t change, and that’s OK. Take the Windsor High School football team, led by head coach Chuck Parrish. “We do just like we do every year: we put the emphasis on being a team … working together on and off the field,” he said in response to what will be the focus for this season. By off the field, Parrish meant the players will be involved with three community projects this year, the first being to help get Westside Elementary School set up; moving desks where needed, for example. “The other is we want to stuff a bus with Christmas gifts for the people in our own community. Obviously, we’ll need the public’s help for that,” he said. The third is to renovate the dugouts for baseball and softball by the time comes STEPHEN H. COWLES | THE TIDEWATER NEWS for those players. Coach Ron Harry watches as the players go As for the game itself, Parrish said, against one another.
