SUNDAY, AUGUST 7, 2016

Dear friends, neighbors and guests, As natives of Southampton County, we are proud of its natural beauty, its rich agricultural heritage and, most of all, its friendly and hospitable people. For more than 35 years now, we’ve taken a few days each August and set aside the rigors and demands of dayto-day affairs to celebrate those things which are most important to us. This annual celebration, the Franklin-Southampton County Fair, has grown and evolved from modest beginnings into a premier event attracting thousands of residents and visitors each August. It is a celebration of what is good about living in rural and small-town America. Much like a breath of fresh air, it will remind you of a simpler time. Who can forget the proud smile of a youngster whose 4-H project has just been awarded a blue ribbon? Or dozens of giggling children chasing after a greased pig? Or our beautiful and talented young ladies competing for the title of Miss FranklinSouthampton County Fair? Where else do we have an opportunity to pause and reflect upon the marvelous bounty of our soils and the creative skills of our artisans and craftsmen? Or relax in our favorite lawn chair and listen to some of the finest musical entertainment in the country? Or simply spend quality time with one another — our families, our neighbors and our friends? Come. Leave your worries at the gate and step back in time. Remind yourself of what a wonderful place the Franklin-Southampton County region is. Mike Johnson County Administrator

William Michael Morgan likes to sing about love As a Grammy nominated producer and executive vice president of A&R at Warner Music Nashville, you might say that Scott Hendricks qualifies as an expert on country singers. So when he gets excited about someone, it’s worth paying attention. And right now he’s excited about Warner Bros. Records newcomer William Michael Morgan. The tall, easy-going, unfailingly polite 22-year-old from Vicksburg, Mississippi, has the look you’d hope for in a young entertainer and the stature to wear a black cowboy hat, a symbol that stands for something in the country music world. And he’s certainly got the chops as an award-winning young performer, who earned recording and publishing deals before turning 20. But for Hendricks, it all comes down to that voice. “William Michael Morgan is seriously one of the very best singers I have ever recorded and I have recorded a bunch,” Hendricks said. “Recording a voice typically reveals any and all imperfections. I will never forget the first time we went into the studio and heard William Michael’s voice come across the speakers. It was a jaw-dropping experience. I’m anxious for the world to hear what I heard. It truly is a special voice.” Country fans were introduced to Morgan

Morgan

with “I Met a Girl,” his sweetly romantic single which debuted this summer as a “Highway Find” on SiriusXM. Old and new, fast and slow, steel and piano, the song recently hit No. 1 on SiriusXM’s “The Highway” Top 45 Countdown and gives fans exact GPS coordinates of where Morgan is coming from. “I like to sing about love. I’m a lover, not a

fighter,” Morgan says with a Mississippi lilt in his voice. “I like to write about having a good time. I’m a typical 22-year-old.” Well, not really. Most folks are still trying to figure themselves out at 22. Morgan knew where he was going from an early age and his parents were always there for him. In the ninth grade, Morgan put together a band of middle-aged musicians who shared his love of Keith Whitley, Merle Haggard and George Jones. “We didn’t really have much of a name for the band, we just loved to get together and play,” Morgan said. “The great thing about finding those guys who were older than me is they all loved the same kind of music I did and we just blended so well. I was lucky enough to have a steel guitar player all those years, and I just fell in love with that sound.” The no-name band played honky tonks on the weekends while Morgan worked odd jobs – he was a roofer, a cashier at the Piggly Wiggly – during the week. He began traveling back and forth to Nashville to write by the time he was 16. Morgan moved to town permanently when he was 18. “Honestly, I didn’t know how to wash my clothes,” Morgan said. He didn’t have any money to plug into the coin slot anyway. But

contacts he built with Managers Joe Carter and Mike Taliaferro along with producer Jimmy Ritchey quickly paid off when he signed a record deal with Warner Music Nashville and a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell at 19. These developments exposed him to Music Row, where he learned to expand his musical repertoire and education. He still keeps his ear out for those special songs like the ones by his musical heroes, though, and thinks he’s found one in “I Met a Girl,” co-produced by Hendricks and Ritchey and co-written by Shane McAnally, Trevor Rosen and Sam Hunt. “I Met a Girl” is the kind of song that goes perfectly with that timeless voice of Morgan’s. “That was the thing about those older songs by Haggard and Jones: they had those lyrics that really, really hit home. Whether it be a fun up-tempo ‘Working Man Blues’ kind of song or ‘The Cold, Hard Truth.’ Each lyric just hits you at home. I think that’s what I try to do. Whether it be happy or sad, I try to put the most heart into I can.” William Michael Morgan will perform at the Main Stage on Thursday, Aug. 11, beginning at 9 p.m. 

Granger Smith ‘In His Own Words’ My name is Granger Smith. Sometimes long, fancy industry bios are helpful, but other times you just need to hear from the guy actually living it, so here’s my story. I was born and raised Texan, and I’m proud of that. I grew up along with two brothers, a couple of yellow labrador retrievers and parents that stayed together because they loved each other. My life changed when I was 14 years old and decided I would teach myself to play guitar. This was motivated by two things: I thought the guitar would make girls pay attention to me, and George Strait played one. By the time I turned 15, I was performing weekends on small town stages in North Texas, and doing my best as a fan club member to attend every George Strait concert within driving distance. Playing high school football was an important rite of passage for me, along with hunting and fishing, but the dream of a music career consumed me. At age 19, I was satisfied with enough songs I had written to make an album. As a freshman

at Texas A&M, I was able to scrape together some studio money by pre-selling the album to friends around campus. For being just a kid, that album did pretty well. It landed me a songwriting deal with EMI Music Publishing in Nashville, and the following year, I took the leap to Tennessee. My time in Nashville was important. I absorbed the craft of songwriting from some of the best, learned my way around studios and recording gear, (which paid off for me later) and cut my teeth on countless stages as both a singer and as a steel guitar player for other singers. After four years, I had a shelf full of song demos, a little bit of music business know-how and a strong conviction to move back to Texas, finish my degree at Texas A&M, and start a band. Moving back to College Station meant basically starting over. The gigs were hard to book and when they did, nobody showed up to watch. But I was happy and felt creative. I saved money by making albums out of my house and using my band. We wore

7

8 out vehicles and went from two pickup trucks, to a suburban, to a van and then another van. The trailers we towed got bigger, and ever so slowly, so did our crowds. I learned how to use a camera and some editing software for making homemade music videos and we made lots of them. My little brother, Tyler joined me in 2008. He traded a pretty good job at the bank to jump in an old van and sell t-shirts in honky-tonk dive bars. I think he did it not only because he shared the same vision as me, but also because his competitive nature was excited about proving a bunch of people wrong. And that’s exactly what we did. Together we conspired and worked from the ground up with the goal of not only building an artist, but a brand. We embraced social media, searched for real connections with fans, studied our predecessors and ignored our doubters. The good

Franklin-Southampton County Fair shows helped pay for all the bad ones, and the songs that sold helped fund all the others that didn’t. We put communities first, knowing that without the people, we were without a job. We created alter-egos through videos to help promote the music and that’s where Earl Dibbles Jr. came from in the summer of 2011. It started as a short, funny video that my brothers and I filmed out where my parents live in Central Texas, but it turned out to be something that completely changed the shape of my career. I actually like to think of it as an “intentional accident” because as planned, the video went viral and became a huge promotional tool for my music. But we had no way to know if it would actually work, especially since many of my videos before it never caught fire. In the early morning of April 16, 2013, I woke up and checked the iTunes store on

my phone with tired eyes. I was absolutely shocked to see my new album, Dirt Road Driveway, sitting at No. 1. Things were rapidly changing on the road, too. We were seeing sold out shows in markets we had never played, and a passion in fans unlike anything I had seen before. After independently releasing 7 studio albums, 1 live album and 2 EPs, I finally signed my first record deal in 2015. I met some great people at Broken Bow Music Group (BBR Music Group) in Nashville who sought us out, believed in my dedication and wanted to take what I was already doing, and magnify the message. We worked together not only as colleagues, but as friends unified on the same mission. Within only weeks of the signing, my debut single “Backroad Song” was a hit at mainstream country radio faster than any of us expected.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 7, 2016

A few years ago, I was standing with my boots in red, sandy, Iraqi soil watching a beautifully majestic Middle Eastern sunset, when one of my band members asked me, “Can you believe music got us here?” No, I can’t. What a journey it has been since I decided to chase this crazy dream. We’ve played 10 countries, three continents, even the White House a few times, and I still can’t believe it all started with a few guitar chords. In my song called “Sleeping On The Interstate,” I wrote, “Connecting map dots like poets and prisoners, trying to live more like a lover than sinner, slave to dreams so far away.” That’s me. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from the music business, it’s that you don’t really choose this life, you are this life. That’s the truth no matter if you’re selling albums or not. I do what I love and love what I do, and there’s no sweeter freedom than that. 

Meet the 2016 Fair Queen Candidates ALEX-ANDREA PULLEY Contestant: Alex-Andrea Pulley, 18. She is the daughter of Roy Thomas Pulley and Wendy Bryan Pulley. Platform: “We don’t know how strong we are until being strong is the only choice we have.” My platform is a childhood cancer quote, which it really could go for all cancers. I’ve seen a lot of people fight so hard; just for it come back. I’ve had someone I care so much about, having their parens go through this fight and lose. I learned how to be very strong for him.

Alex-Andrea Pulley

it happens to you or someone you love. My cousin that I’m very close with was told he had leukemia at 4. Thanks to all the doctors and prayers, he is 15 and loves soccer. I couldn’t picture our family without him. I hope one day to see a cure for all cancers because not everyone wins the fight like my cousin did. He is one of the reasons why I will always support and volunteer for Relay For Life, Make a Wish Foundation, Alex’s Lemonade Stand, Red Cross, etc.

You have to let the people around you know they always need to stay strong. I’ve lost people to bone, lung and stomach cancer. I’ve seen people fight breast cancer and leukemia. I believer you are only given what you can handle, so don’t ever give up and don’t ever stop being strong. “Kick cancer’s butt” should be the motto you keep in your mind when going through this fight.

Scholarship Intention: If I became Miss Franklin-Southampton County Fair Queen and won the scholarship monies, I would use it to get my business degree. I passed my cosmetology state board while a junior in high school. I want to my degree so that I can run my own successful hair salon. One day I hope to get my teaching degree so that I can run my own beauty school in the Franklin/Southampton area. Also while I’m in school, I plan on attending hair, makeup and beauty shows to keep up on the newest trends.

We just don’t know how strong we are till

When you give me a project I get very passionate about it and always try my hardest. I’m very Schools/Community/Church: I attended Southampton High School. While in school, I was a very involved SkillsUSA member. I was a member for three years and two of those years I was an officer (reporter and president). I played tennis all four years of high school. I’ve gone to the State Fair for cosmetology, Norfolk and Richmond’s Virginia Beautician for cosmetology. I’ve also been to district, state and national conventions for SkillsUSA leadership competitions. Hobbies and Interests: I love doing hair, makeup, playing tennis, working out, fishing, hunting, shopping and going to the late, mounts and beach. I love to travel and seeing the world. I love volunteering for the community, but one of my favorite things to

volunteer for is Relay For Life. I like to bring awareness to all cancers that not everyone is aware about. North Carolina & Duke are my college basketball and football teams. Boston Red Sox are MLB team. Washington Redskins are my NFL team. I love all music, but country is my favorite. My favorite show is “Grey’s Anatomy.” I love Italian food. I love spending time with friends and family. Awards and honors: I received a bowling scholarship for coming in second place at state competition in Blacksburg when I bowled on a league. At State Fair I receive second place for formal hairstyle and fifth place for prom hair and makeup. I was awarded first place for celebrity look-alike at Norfolk’s beautician association and third place for prom hair and makeup at Richmond’s beautification association. Interesting facts: I passed my Cosmetology State Board while a junior in high school. I have over 25 cousins. My grandpa has owned his own Corvette dealership called Bryan’s Corvettes. I’ve been to 10 different states and also Canada. The day I graduated my mom had graduated 30 years ago at the

11

Franklin-Southampton County Fair same school and same day. I have one sister, Olivia Gail Pulley, 13. I have donated a gallon of blood to the Red Cross. I hope one day to own my own salon/beauty school in the Franklin-Southampton area. College/Future Career Goals: Attending Paul D. Camp Community College (graduating in 2018). My career has already started. I passed by Cosmetology State Board as a junior in high school. I hope one day to be just as successful as my boss, Naomi. Essay: It would be an honor to become Miss Franklin-Southampton Fair Queen. It would be such a great experience to represent such a great community. Achieving Fair Queen would give me many opportunities to expand my volunteer work I do in the community. Also, it would give me the ability to be more involved and informed with charities. I feel the Fair Queen should be someone who is a role model to the youth of our community, and I feel I am the right person for this position. I want the younger girls to know they don’t have to have a crown just to be queen or a princess, and that you can be and do

whatever you want, and don’t ever let anyone ruin your dreams or tell you you can’t. I also believe the queen should be proud of where she’s from; I’ve very proud to call this place and community my home. Being queen will also give me an opportunity to bring awareness to cancer. Being the queen is not about a crown or scholarship money, it’s about what you can do to better yourself and community.

BRIANNA KELSEY JOHNSON Contestant: Brianna Kelsey Johnson, 18. She is the daughter of Benjamin Earl Johnson and Dana Michelle Story. Platform: Relay For Life: The American Cancer Society. In the spring of 2012, my Aunt Betty lost her battle to cancer. It takes losing someone close to realize the huge effect cancer has on every family, community and the whole entire world. I chose the American Cancer Society as my platform because even though we are not all diagnosed with the disease, we are are all influenced by it. It is a cause that needs to be empowered throughout our community

I know it’s very hard to adapt to making new friends and fitting in, but the big problem is learning different curriculums everywhere you go. For me, it took a whole year for me to switch gears with learning a whole new learning environment. Kids learn differently. We should learn to teach the way a student learns.

Franklin-Southampton County Fair She is the daughter of Brenda Lou Reed and Robert Earl Johnson Jr. Platform: I chose animal abuse intervention because I am and always have been an animal lover. I help every possible animal that I can. I am one of those people who stop and turn around to save every turtle in the road when I see them. Over 1 million animals are abused each year. Dogs are the top animals that are abused. The main breed abused are pit bulls. Dogs are used by some people in dog fights and it mainly involves pit bulls because they are such a strong breed of do. Cats are the other highly abused animals, and they are also the most populated animal in the United States. I have experienced many stray cats or “dropoffs” at my own home and they turned out to be the best pets. The ASPCA’s top priority is to top animal cruelty in the U.S. by bringing an end to dog fights, puppy mills and animal hoarding, especially cats. Each of these is a form of abuse or neglect in some way Each minute another animal is being abused somewhere in the United States. I have donated to the ASPCA to help stop animal cruelty, and I

have taken in multiple homeless pets in hopes of keeping them safe, healthy and happy. Scholarship Intention: I plan to use any monies received from the pageant to continue my nursing education. I want to get my my LPN and begin working and

possibly going back to further my education more after getting some work experience with my degree. I want to begin working in a pediatric doctor’s office as an LPN, and if I go back to get my RN, I would work toward being on a maternity floor in a hospital. 14 student and I work part-time. When I have free time, I try to spend it with my family, friends, boyfriend and my pets. Schools/Community/Church: After high school I haven’t been involved in many activities I used to be a member of the Key Club and National Honors Society, where we helped in the community and raised money for charities. I do help raise money at my job for the Children’s Hospital of King’s Daughters we we do fundraisers. Hobbies and Interests: My main hobby is singing, but I also enjoy swimming when I can, shopping, occasionally exercising, driving around just for fun, bowling and playing video games. I’m sure I could list more because I enjoy doing just about anything as long as I’m not sitting around doing nothing. Awards and honors: I have been on the president’s list in college multiple times since I’ve been attending Paul D. Camp. I graduated high school (Southampton High 2013) with honors and received a certificate for that also. Interesting facts: I don’t know much about

Franklin-Southampton County Fair my entire family because I don’t know most of them. I don’t know any ancestral history of my family either, but one day I hope to find out the history of my family. I’ve grown up with mainly just my mom, sister and grandparents. College/Future Career Goals: My hardest decision right now is my career. I started college in pre-nursing the first year, licensed practical nursing the second year, then I switched to education the third year and now I plan to switch back to nursing and finish my last four classes to get my degree Essay: I would like to become Miss Franklin-Southampton County Fair Queen because I think it would be an amazing new experience. I have never won anything like this because I have always been shy and have never had the confidence to do it. I know as the queen I will have to attend all of the local events for the next year, and I already do all of that because I enjoy going to each even being hosted. I believe the queen is a role model to those who may participate in the pageant, and I believe I can be that person. I know this is going to be a great experience, and it will definitely pull me out of my comfort zone, but I’m ready for it.

cancer is a well-known disease. My greatgrandmother is a breast cancer survivor. Going into the doctor’s office for a yearly check-up can be very nerve-wracking. Going in not knowing what the outcome may be, but praying that everything is all right. After being told by your doctor that you have breast cancer is hurtful. Trying to find the right words to tell your family that you have cancer can be very hard. Coping with breast cancer can be stressful. They’re four stages when it comes to cancer: You will have to go through a series of biopsies, X-rays, bone scans and blood tests. The survival rate show that people who have been diagnoses early may live at least five more years. Some many not live to see the five-year rate. Even though this is an estimate, most people will live longer. Last October, I lost my cousin to breast cancer. I feel that cancer can be beat!

College/Future Career Goals: She is a rising junior at Paul D. Camp Community College, majoring in digital media and design. I want to be a photographer so that I can show people the beauty of the world through my camera lens. There’s plenty more music being played at the Fair COURTLAND On Thursday, Aug. 11, two area bands appear on the Main Stage to open up for the featured performer, William Michael Morgan. Silver Street is scheduled to begin playing at 6 p.m., followed by Hickory Knoll at 7:30 p.m. Silver Street consists of Jeff Davis on drums and vocals; Johnny Haney on bass and vocals; Benjy Beale on keyboards and vocals; and Ed Marks on guitar and vocals. Their website, www.silverstreetva.com, lists brief bios on each: • Jeff started playing drums at age 14 in the Jr. High School Band. “One day a friend was at school with his guitar playing “Smoke on the Water”. I ran and got my snare drum and started playing along just keeping the beat. It sounded pretty good, I guess. So he invited me to his house to jam, and as they say the rest is history.” Jeff joined Silver Street in 1980 and has been keeping the beat of “the Street” ever since. •For over 35 years Johnny Haney has been holding down the bottom in variety music genres. Johnny enjoys and excels at playing and singing Country, R&B, Rock, Soul, and Beach music. And excel he does. There is no finer singing bass player in the land. In addition to extensive travel and playing countless venues, Johnny has appeared on various studio recording projects including completed record albums & cd’s, demos & jingles. “With the support from my family, being a professional musician has been a mainstay in my life and I have had the good fortunate to learn and play bass with the finest musicians out there.” • Benjy said, “Music has been a large part of my life for more than 40 years, and yet every time I sit down and play I still learn something new. I think that keeps things interesting for me musically. I’ve always thought that I would keep playing music just as long as it didn’t get to be boring.” • H.L. started playing the guitar and singing at the age of 8. His first band came at the age of 12 and by 15, he was playing for fun and profit (more fun than profit) in the clubs around the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Around age 20, things started to change and H.L. began doing some light road work and getting serious about where “the road” might

take him. After stints in the Virginia Beachbased “Hotwire” and “Thunder Road”, the opportunity came to join Richmond-based “Blackwater.” Hickory Knoll is made up of Jason Francis on lead vocals; Jeffrey Raiford and father and son Ed and Edwards Marks on guitars; Frank Ricks on bass guitar and fiddle; and Sonny “D” Davis who “rocks the set,” according to their Facebook page. Edward “Country band with rock ‘n’ roll style,” is how the band describes itself. “Started out just a couple of friends jammin’ down at Hickory Knoll in little Sedley, Virginia, and found that people like the same music we do. We got the nasty guitar, and drum licks of rock ‘n’ roll and the smooth rhythm of country music. Can satisfy a crowd young or still young enough to party!” William Michael Morgan will headline starting at 9 p.m. For details about Morgan, see his biography elsewhere in this special section. ••• On Friday, Aug. 12, local talent will demonstrate their abilities starting at 6:30 p.m. Then at 9 p.m., it’s time to bring the seashore to Southampton. That’s when Phil Dirt presents Surf’s Up! A Tribute to The Beach Boys! We ask you: What could be more American than The Beach Boys? For details, see their feature elsewhere in this special section.

••• Opening for Granger Smith on Saturday, Aug. 13 will be Silver Eagle, which starts playing at 6 p.m. According to the bio on their website, (www.silvereagleband.com), “The Silver Eagle Band is about as close to family as you can be without being blood related. Shane Wells (vocals and guitar) and Marty Wells (vocals and bass) are cousins, but Johnie Coggsdale (vocals, keyboards and harmonica) and Wade Queensberry (vocals and drums) feel like they are their brothers when they play music together. “It all started back in the ‘80s opening up for national acts such as Ricky Scaggs, Bill Monroe, Holly Dunn, Foster and Lloyd, Eddie Rabbit, Susy Bogguss and Ty Herndon. Most recently, we’ve opened for Ricky Scaggs for the second time, Joe Diffie and Chris Janson. We have been honored to meet so many talented musicians and loyal fans over the years. We hope to continue providing you with the best in tradtional country music.” The Jody Pyles Band performs beginning

at 7:30 p.m. Based out of Nashville, Tennessee, The Jody Pyles Band was formed in 2011. Jody Pyles was born in North Carolina and raised among the Blue Ridge Mountains, and that heritage is seen in his music. Being raised in everything from mournful mountain bluegrass to praise-filled Gospel to the kind of country music you hear at the local county fair, Jody grew up in a well-rounded musical background and it was the basis for his unique country flavor. Eventually Jody’s music meant so much to the people where he lived, they encouraged him to take it beyond the mountains where he grew up. A few years and thousands of miles later, The Jody Pyles Band has performed all across the U.S. and on three continents. Very simply put, living life has formed the character of Jody Pyles; each day making the man and songs that he sings. The Jody Pyles Band features deeply personal music which gives a voice to the common working man and woman, and the experiences they face each and every day.
