What Are the Benefits of Local Newspaper Advertising?

S

mall-business owners use advertising to help increase brand recognition, product sales, new foot traffic and repeat business. Common advertising outlets include radio, television, Internet, magazines and newspapers. Although advertising your business via non-print outlets such as radio or television can be advantageous, local newspaper advertising offers many benefits that make investment on your part worthwhile. PROACTIVE AUDIENCE Newspaper readers often actively look for advertising in newspapers to search for deals and coupons. Placing your ad in a newspaper doesn’t guarantee that readers will notice it, but a reader actively looking for deals is likely to notice your ad, take the time to read it and possibly act on a sale or offer. POSITIVE EXPECTATIONS Many people feel that certain forms of advertising such as commercials and website pop-up ads are intrusive. In a local newspaper, ads are often expected by readers, and their placement is often near content similar to the ad content

-- for example, a shoe store ad in the fashion section or a computer store ad in the technology section. As this type of placement makes an ad less intrusive, a negative consumer reaction is less likely. TARGETED AUDIENCE Besides ad placement in sections near similar content, local newspaper advertising can target a specific audience in other ways. For example, newspapers often have special sections, releases and inserts that target audiences based on events such as a holiday or season, specific geographic areas such as a street or neighborhood or specific groups of people such as ethnic groups or college students. REPUTATION BUILDING Local newspaper publishers work hard to create positive relationships with members of the community to build a loyal customer base. As a publisher’s reputation grows, community members begin to trust the company for providing timely and accurate information and often begin to believe that a trusted local publisher won’t do business with companies that are un-

trustworthy. By advertising with a trusted local newspaper that has a loyal customer base, you can build a positive reputation in the community simply through this association. LAST MINUTE CHANGES Another benefit of local newspaper advertising is rapid turnaround on production changes. If you need to make last-minute changes to your ad, the newspaper advertising department can usually get the job done quickly. OPTIONS AND EXTRAS Local newspapers offer small-business owners a wide range of advertising options that can fit nearly any budget. Options include small 1-inchsquare classified ads, column ads in various sizes by the column inch, half-page or fullpage spreads. You can also negotiate with a publisher to get extra services at no additional cost, such as color printing, design assistance, a slightly larger ad or inclusion of your ad in the publisher’s other products, such as magazines. How to Choose a Boutique

Boutique stores offer their own special charm. The best among them offer unique, original, or one-of-a-kind items, products, and gifts you just won’t find in big box stores or chain retailers. Boutiques pride themselves on offering the type of personal customer service and products also not found in the chain stores.

But there are a few things to look for to find the very best one. Here are some things to consider. Service It’s service that sets a great boutique apart from the rest. Shopping should always be a pleasure, not a chore. And when store owners and workers get to know you, they love to go the extra mile to meet your needs,

you always walk away satisfied. A great boutique will be staffed by people who not only greet you warmly and make themselves available to answer questions, but also who really know their product lines. You can tell they’re in a different league than other retailers by the way they make you feel when you walk in the door. Style

On a variety of products, the best boutiques will have their own in-house sense of style. And they’ll be experts at helping you find yours. Boutiques often specialize in a few styles and product lines, and they’ll offer products that help you look and feel your best. Whether you like to dress in a playful, elegant, whimsical or businesslike way, a good bou-

tique can take your wardrobe to the next level. Quality If you want cheaply made, mass-produced clothing, there are lots of places you can find it. But it shouldn’t be at a boutique. The best boutiques carry tasteful products that fit your budget but are also built to last — a difference you can see and feel.

HOW TO CREATE AN ON-THE-GO HANDWASHING KIT - Fall road trip season has arrived, and it promises to be unlike any other in recent memory. The outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 has changed how people go about their daily lives, including how they travel. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that anyone who intends to travel take certain steps to protect themselves while away from home. An on-the-go handwashing kit that includes the following items is easy to carry and makes for an effective way to wash your hands while on the road this fall. • Water bottle(s) with cap: Pack enough water bottles with caps to accommodate your entire traveling party. • Antibacterial soap/hand sanitizer: The CDC advises washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after going out in public, touching surfaces frequently touched by others and/or after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. If you bring hand sanitizer, make sure it’s at least 60 percent alcohol. • Paper towels/wash cloths: Pack paper towels or wash cloths so you can dry your hands after washing them. • Garbage bag: If you’re visiting a park or trails, remember to bring a garbage bag along so you do not leave dirty towels or empty water bottles behind. A plastic bag from the grocery store can suffice if your traveling party is small.

How to Choose a Real Estate Agency These days, it seems like every town has more than its share of real estate agencies and brokers. But since buying or selling a home is such a major decision, it’s good to know there’s an array of agents available to help you through these complicated transactions. But choose wisely, all are not equal. Finding the right agency is a balance between experience and chemistry. Naturally, you’ll want an agent or broker with the proper credentials and licenses. Experience is valuable, but sometimes agencies with fewer clients can offer you more personalized attention. Trustworthiness is also a major factor. You should ask around and check with your local business bureau for suggestions about

good agencies in your area. Once you have a list of possibilities, do some research. Find out how long the agency has been in business. Ideally, you want people who know your community. If the real estate agency is merely a side business, it might not give you the best results. Buying and selling homes is a full-time job. Look on the internet and read customer service reviews. They should also have an impact on your overall impression of an agency. Once you have narrowed your list, contact some businesses and ask them questions. You should know about their listings, fees and commissions. Choose an agency that has

connections with the community, a sharp understanding of neighborhoods that interest you, and solid contacts with other realty companies. This assumes major importance when you’re selling your current house, because the agency usually handles the sale while the Realtor helps you find your new one. The marketing strategy and advertising is what makes each agency unique. It will greatly influence the sale of your home. Although most companies might look the same, real estate agencies have a preference for the kind of properties they show or sell. These concentrations might include commercial properties or high-end homes. Try to find a business with a fo-

cus that concentrates on selling homes similar to yours. Look at an agency’s listings to see if your home would fit in nicely with their existing clients. If you were purchasing a home, would you find their listings easy to read and informative? The size of the agency will have an impact on your experience. Small agencies can provide more personalized service, but they may not have the networking advantages of a large company. Big agencies have more opportunities to network and sell your home, but they may have to divide their time among many clients. Be prepared to ask an agency the following questions if you are selling your home:

“Congratulations to our agents for receiving special recognition from The Century 21 Corporation for 40 years of commitment, dedication and professionalism in the real estate industry. “ Darren Stauffer, broker

— How will you advertise my home? Will you use the internet and newspapers? — How many pictures of my house will appear online? — On which sites will my home be featured? — Do you have other homes that have recently been sold in this price range? — How long has the agency been selling homes in my neighborhood? — What makes your agency unique? The two biggest financial decisions you will make in your lifetime are buying and selling a home. Protect your investment and peace of mind by choosing the best and most trustworthy real estate agency you can find.

How to Choose an Auto Body Shop From dents and scrapes to fender-benders and more intense damage resulting from an accident, repairing your vehicle requires the services of expert professionals from an experienced, reputable auto body shop. Not surprisingly, shops specializing in this service can vary in quality, reliability and cost. It’s not unusual for auto body repair estimates to differ by hundreds if not thousands of dollars. To get the best work at the fairest price requires an investment in time and asking the right questions. Choosing the right body shop depends on many factors, such as the extent of damage, whether the costs are born by yourself or insurance, the experience of the shop with your make and model

of vehicle and the shop’s history and reputation, among others. Paramount to your search is finding an auto body shop that’s honest, trustworthy and dependable. That choice will ensure that your vehicle is repaired quickly, affordably and correctly. The shop you choose should be able to complete all manner of work, from a minor touch-up to a full-body repair. Your friends, family and colleagues might have recommendations. After all, auto body shops are an unfortunate, but necessary, part of life for most people. Have a list of companies, research each shop on the Internet and read customer reviews. Testimonials, negative and positive, should be considered.

But keep in mind that no business has a 100 percent satisfaction rate. Someone will always be displeased. Also, more people are likely to leave a negative rather than a positive comment. A good source for finding an auto body shop is your local newspaper. Local businesses advertise and many times you can find special deals to help save you money. Once you have created a list of shops, contact them on the phone and ask pertinent questions. How long have they been in business? What are their specialties? How soon can you bring your vehicle in for an inspection? Ask to set up an appointment for a free inspection. Then further investigate the business. Look around their lobby. Is it

clean? Do they have their license and any awards or certificates posted? Do they care enough about their customers to offer reading material, coffee or water? Consider prices. Are they comparable to other body shops? While you want to find a great deal, cheaper is not always better. Understand that you will often get what you pay for when it comes to auto body work. Low prices may be tempting, but they typically mean sub-par work, used parts and paint that is incorrectly applied. Feel free to ask the manager or owner for references before they work on your car. You can also check their previous work. When you see a car with paint drips, panels that are

misaligned or paints that don’t match, look elsewhere. You will not save money if you need to have the improper work redone. The shop should inspect your vehicle for repairs that are not readily visible. Often, there are hidden damages that cannot be detected until repair work begins on the vehicle. Finding an auto body shop may not be the most pleasant business because it usually means your vehicle has suffered some kind of damage. But finding the right shop will make the experience much more pleasant and you will be happy with the repairs. Especially if you find the right shop that knows how to repair your vehicle so it looks the same as before, or even better.

We use factory specs and original factory parts whenever possible to deliver the like-new results you deserve.

How to Choose a Power Equipment Dealer Power tools have made pursuing home maintenance and improvement projects much easier. Likewise, woodworking professionals and hobbyists would be lost without such power tools as drills and saws. The list of tools every homeowner or hobbyist could benefit from having is near endless. And that’s okay. You can purchase these tools as you require them for projects over the years. Just be sure to pick quality equipment backed by solid warranties. You want to build a collection of tools, not spend money replacing the same ones over and over. Here are some things to look at in choosing the right power tools for your weekend warrior arsenal. Product line

Brands and product lines will usually determine the quality of the power equipment dealer. Some brands have better reputations than others. Your friends, family and co-workers can guide you toward quality brands. Ask them which product lines are the best. Remember that is better to pay more for equipment that lasts rather than go through the hassle of replacing cheap tools every year. Some brands have product lines that are engineered to different standards. A good dealer will explain differences in manufacturing, materials and which ones have the fewest problems after the sale. Also, consider getting a recommendation from other people who use tools professionally.

People who use lawnmowers and weed trimmers all day, every day will have thoughts about the advantages of certain brands. Pay attention to what’s labeled “commercial” or “professional” grade. These models typically come with longer warranties. They are usually built for use over long periods of time and under tough conditions. But they also have downsides, such as cost. Commercial or professional grade equipment may be heavier than standard models. If you want a long-lasting tool, though, they are hard to beat. Knowledge The best power equipment dealers have in-depth knowledge about their products. Find a store with employees

and owners who understand every last detail about what they sell. They should be able to demonstrate the features of the equipment, explain how it works, inform you about warranty coverage, and offer advice on which accessories have the best value. They will also educate you on how to make your equipment last for many years. Salespeople should be informative, not pushy. They will help you find the right product to match your needs, even if it’s a more affordable model. They know that is the best way to get repeat customers. In fact, that’s another sign that you’re dealing with a reputable retailer. If they’ve been in business for a long time, it’s usually for a good reason. Look for pow-

How-to make your trim work quick and easy:

er equipment dealers who have a solid track record. Service All quality power equipment needs maintenance over time. Ask about what kind of services the store offers after the sale. Many equipment dealers offer repair services on site. If not, they should refer you to professionals who will do the job right, and for a good price. Some owners, for example, don’t want to change the oil in their lawnmowers themselves. Be sure to inquire about how much maintenance and parts will cost. The best power equipment dealers are partners who will help you get the job done right for many years to come. They will help you save money and time.

If you’ve ever thought about indulging yourself in the relaxing, rejuvenating experience of visiting a spa there’s never been a better time. With the boom in wellness movement, there are countless spas available to you offering an array of services to relieve stress. From massages to makeup, facials to a mani-pedi, a good spa will leave you feeling like a new person by the time you leave. Here are some other factors to keep in mind when choosing a spa. Style Atmosphere is a key element when selecting the perfect spa. Relaxation, serenity and wellness are qualities you are looking for. You should have the sensation

How To Guide

Page 7

How to Choose a Spa that you are leaving your troubles at the door. When you visit the spa, pay attention to how your body feels. The lights, smells and sounds should unwind you. If people seem stressed, then it will be hard to relax. You are paying for ambiance as well as services. It is essential that the decor and staff make you feel warm and welcomed. Service You can receive a wide variety of services, including manicures, facials, saunas, hair removals, mud baths and makeup applications. They may even have services that are not listed in their brochures. Check with different spas before deciding on the services you prefer.

When you want to try a new spa, schedule a basic service, such as a manicure. If you like the atmosphere and customer service, you might enjoy a more advanced service. Each client should feel like her experience is the staff’s top priority. You don’t want to feel rushed. Rather, the best spas will make you feel like good friends are completely focused on providing you individual attention and service. Cleanliness A clean environment is indicative of good management. In this business, sanitation is essential. There should be no broken equipment or dirty corners. Everything should be organized. Spa guests must feel safe and comfortable in a sparkling clean space.

Schedule Opt for a spa with convenient hours. The best spas are usually quite busy; however, they will try to accommodate you if you need some flexibility on occasion. Along with finding out the spa’s hours, ask how long you will need to wait for an appointment. It may be days or even weeks before you can get a specific service at a popular place. On the other hand, some spas accept walk-in customers. Customers should not have to wait long to begin treatments, nor should they feel hurried through a process. A spa close to home can be a big plus. You will feel as though you took a vacation without ever leaving town. Price

Budgets are personal. While it’s easy to look at a list and pick the cheapest service, it will rarely be your best option. Like so much in life, you get what you pay for at a spa. Different spas have different definitions for the treatments they offer, making it difficult to compare. You may even have to research spa terms to help you understand the services. There are plenty of things to think about when selecting a spa, from the expertise of the staff and the sophistication of their decor, to the range of services offered. Maybe the best way to pick a spa is to make an appointment and try it out. The right spa will send you home feeling relaxed and looking beautiful.

How to Choose an Insurance Company

. The right insurance should help you feel confident and We’re the right good neighbors for that. Call us today. Let’s face it: Purchasing insurance isn’t fun. But not having insurance — or not knowing how to access it in an emergency — is worse. And if there’s a loss to your home, auto, or business, the last thing you want to have to do is figure out who’s your insurance company is when your life’s been turned upside down. Insurance guarantees you peace of mind and protection, so choosing the right insurance company is a worthwhile investment of your time. But unless you know what you’re looking for in an insurance provider, you shouldn’t pick a company based on their marketing hype alone. Premiums from company to company can vary widely, as

can the type of coverage they offer. So, before you purchase ® a plan, you need to understand exactly what type of insurance you’re buying and how it will affect your bottom line.

ghbor, State Farm is there.

Know your policy You will have to take a look at the fine details and figures for each policy. If you are in the beginning of this process, insurance representatives should act more like teachers instead of salespeople. Your choices may be complicated, with a range of pricing options, deductibles and exclusions. A good company will give you choices, explain them clearly and let you make up your own mind. While reviewing your options, make sure you are com-

paring similar policies. If a premium seems unusually low, it might have a higher deductible or more limitations. It is important that you get as much information as possible about each policy before making a decision. Customer service Customer service always plays a key role in determining which company is best. If you’ve had friends or family who have filed insurance claims previously, ask them about their experiences. Some insurance companies have better reputations than others. Gathering all of these experiences will give you a good idea of how you might be treated.

Each company has a different customer service philosophy. Some of them prefer to use a local representative to communicate with clients. Others will discuss policies through their website or a 24-hour phone number. Many insurance companies, however, use a combination of these methods. They might give you 24-hour access to national representatives along with a local advisor. Financial strength An insurance company is only as strong as its balance sheet. Financial strength is especially important these days. Every insurer is independently rated based on their finances. An insurance

agent should inform you of the company’s rating and tell you what it means. A good rating means the company can make a payout in the event of a catastrophic event. A reputable, stable, well-capitalized insurance company is also likely to have more coverage options. While your insurance premiums are an important factor, it is just one piece of a complicated puzzle. Choose a company that will not only give you a fair price, but who will also be prompt and courteous in the event you have to file a claim. The right insurance company will treat you well at every level of interaction, provide quality coverage, and pay out in a timely manner should there be an accident.

How to Choose an HVAC Company Your heating and air conditioning system is a vital component of your home. Whether you’re investing a new system to replace an aging unit or repairing your existing system, creating a relationship with a professional HVAC company can save you money and headaches — and keep you warm and cool. The best HVAC contractors are helpful and reliable, but a poor contractor can cost you extra money and heartache. Good word of mouth will go a long way toward helping you find the best professionals in your area. Create a list of candidates and call the Better Business Bureau, your state’s board of contractors or the builders’ association to check on their reputations. Your town’s building inspection office may also have information for you. Avoid companies who have many complaints on their record. Upon narrowing the list, call the remaining ones and ask about pricing, guarantees and warranties. Also inquire about how long it would take to complete a job and the manufacturers’ brands they use.

If you are purchasing new equipment, find out if you need a separate service contractor or if routine maintenance and repairs are included in the price of installation. Does the company provide around-the-clock emergency service? High quality HVAC companies are fully licensed, bonded and insured. If a worker is injured or causes damage to your property, that insurance should cover it. Otherwise, you could be liable for the damages. Your insurance premiums would likely increase as a result. Reputable HVAC companies will usually belong to recognized professional and trade organizations. Some well-known organizations include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers. Membership in one of these organizations is not automatic. Applicants are required to have certain certifications, meet professional standards and meet or exceed other requirements before they are admitted. Before any work be-

gins, verify that all the required building permits are in place. Most companies will file permits on your behalf at the local building codes office. But don’t assume that it has happened. Check with the permitting office first. Work done without proper permits could result in a fine and time delay. Have a load calculation done before installing a new system in any building. The best companies perform a thorough calculation rather than estimate. Buildings change over time due to foundations cracking or settling. It will affect the efficiency of any equipment. The HVAC company shouldn’t use the old unit to determine the proper size of a new one. If your old unit was inadequate, you will want to install a unit that is a different size. Speak with your HVAC installer to determine the right size and model for you. Ask your HVAC contractor to perform annual checkups to verify that the unit is running at peak efficiency. With these tips, you can choose a reliable HVAC business that will help you for years to come.

SHOP LOCAL Encourage your family and friends to make small business shopping a larger part of their overall spending plan.

How to Choose a Preschool for Your Child There’s substantial evidence that children gain valuable skills by attending preschool. These pre-kindergarten schools can act as both child care and learning centers, preparing young children for their education experiences to come. They’ll benefit even more, perhaps, from learning to get along with other children. Choosing the right preschool is an important part of preparing your child for life. It’s the foundation for starting a good education, something that can have repercussions for years to come. But selecting a school will also be based on other factors, such as your schedule and the many types of preschools and the curriculum they offer.

With so many options for children, how can you pick the right one? Here are some things to consider. Teacher training One of the most important things to consider — and also something that can have a dramatic impact on cost — is the experience, training and qualifications of the preschool’s educational staff. Some preschools are almost indistinguishable from day care centers, where children will have a safe place to spend time but not necessarily a rigorous academic foundation. Others focus more on learning specific skills and knowledge taught by fully qualified and certified teachers with col-

lege degrees. Neither philosophy is necessarily wrong, as some parents don’t want to rush their young kids into academic rigors, while other parents are all about giving their kids an early start from educational pros. The important thing is knowing exactly what training, higher education, experience and certificates are held by your child’s teacher. Only then can you decide if they’re a good match for your expectations. Length of day Another aspect that can vary with different preschool programs is the length of the day. Some schools are designed around just a few hours per day, while others are full-day

programs that offer more time for learning and play. Again, neither method is necessarily superior, but you should know the schedule up front and make sure it meets you and your child’s needs. Curriculum The best preschools do a great job giving your child a head start on life, and the curriculum they choose can be a big part of that foundation. Find out what curriculum materials and teaching style the school uses. Dig into the specifics of what your child will be learning, when and how. From the books they’ll be using to math basics and teaching social skills, know as much as possible about the learning

process they use so you can make a better decision. To think even further down the road, try to find a preschool that uses a recognized curriculum that will dovetail with your plans for their future education, whether in public or private schools as they get older. The schools they’ll be attending may have some good advice about curriculums that would leave your preschooler well prepared. Playtime philosophy Studies show that play time serves an important role in your child’s mental and social development. You should make sure the preschool’s philosophy about play time is a good fit for your expectations.

How to Choose a Wrecker Service Nobody looks forward to their car breaking down or having an accident that leaves a vehicle unroadworthy, but when it happens you’ll need to engage a towing service for help. While many are inclined to pick the first service they can find in the heat of the moment, it’s worth taking time before such an event occurs to develop a relationship with a wrecker service. That way, you’ll know you’ll be working with a service that’s reliable, professional and trustworthy. If you take the steps to get familiar with area wrecker companies ahead of time scenarios like this won’t be too much of a hassle. Here’s a list of tips for finding a wrecker number to keep in your phone today. Talk to Professionals Ask for recommendations from trustworthy people, such as your local police or sheriff’s department. Your insurance agent or mechanic might also know some great services. You are searching for an honest company who will charge a fair price.

Make sure you are not getting paid referrals. For example, a mechanic might guide you toward a towing company he owns or that pays him for referring new customers. Getting several recommendations from different sources will help keep you from being influenced by walking advertisements. Ask Around Family, friends and even colleagues at work will also know good towing services. Ask around to find out about wrecker companies they’ve used in the past. Would they be willing to use them again? Did the driver arrive promptly? Was the price reasonable? How did he treat the car during transport? Was there any damage? Did the driver act professionally? Look for Longevity Not all companies are qualified for towing vehicles. Unfortunately, many companies are in business, but are not all that responsible. Look for a business that has been properly licensed, insured and trains its employees thoroughly.

The best companies have a long track record. A business can keep operating only if it has satisfied customers and continues to do excellent work. Get Price Quotes To find the best wrecker companies, have several business give you price quotes. Wrecker services will consider several factors in their quotes, including the type of vehicle you drive, the distance it has to be towed and even the time it was towed — day or night. Find out how each company calculates its rates so you know what the cost will be before an emergency. Beware of companies with especially low quotes. They may have hidden fees, inexperienced employees, old equipment or bad service. Once you have identified the wrecker services you will use, keep their names and phone numbers in a handy place. The phone numbers should be in your glove compartment, console or programmed into your phone. That way, you won’t panic if you break down.

Choosing a Pest Control Company Cockroaches, bugs, termites. These and other insect infestations can cause nightmares for homeowners. Pests can ruin the serenity of your home or place of business and cause damage. And an untreated infestation can quickly become unmanageable. If it involves termites, it could even threaten the structure of your home. If the problem hasn’t spread, you may be able to contain and eradicate these pets on your own. But if you’re dealing with an infestation you just can’t seem to stop, it’s probably time to call in the help of a professional. The right pest company will handle the problem quickly. Here are some tips to help you search for a company in your area.

A list of companies Your first step is to make a list of companies in your area that provide services you need. Check out companies online or who advertise of your local newspaper. You may also ask friends, family and businesses in the area who they use to keep pests away. Next, research each company’s background. Look at customer service reviews. Shorten the list of possible providers and then contact the Better Business Bureau by phone or email. Ask if the companies have any complaints filed against them. You might also note if the bureau has granted accreditation to any companies. Types of treatments Narrow your list further by

contacting the companies directly. Ask them what kind of chemicals they use when treating a residence. Powders, sprays and other forms vary dramatically in effectiveness as well as toxicity. If you have children or pets, this issue is an urgent concern. Many treatments are toxic to people and animals. Poisoned bait, for instance, is a method that homeowners with children or pets should avoid. Companies should have solutions for these situations. Some companies offer environmentally friendly, non-toxic alternatives, such as naturally based compounds that will not harm children or pets. These treatments might include citrus-based agents and trap-based rodent control.

Research Prior to contacting anyone, educate yourself about common pests in your area. Check to see if these pests are on your property. You might find evidence such as droppings or other indications that they are in your yard or home. Look on the internet to discover which solutions are used to control these pests. Some cities or communities have laws regarding pesticide appellations. There might be regulations concerning licensing and insurance for pest control companies. Now, contact the service providers for more detailed information about prices, processes and other information. You should call at least two different

businesses so you can compare services. The company you choose should do a free, full inspection of the property before providing services. Accompany the workers as they check your property — both inside and outside. Listen to their sales pitch and ask questions. Reliable, reputable business should always answer your questions honestly. Finally, trust your instincts. If the workers seem inexperienced or you don’t trust their information, look elsewhere. A quality pest control company will not only help you with your current situation, it will also prevent future flare-ups. You can take comfort knowing that this is one problem someone else has under control.

How to Choose a Home Care Service for the Elderly

Finding home care for an elderly loved one can be challenging but ultimately rewarding. In-home care means seniors can remain in their homes rather than a nursing facility, which can make a huge difference in quality of life. But it’s important to determine needs in advance of looking for a provider. Services vary from basic assistance with simple daily needs, such as getting dressed and minor chores and errands, to more advanced nursing care and medical treatment. Here are some tips to keep in mind when shopping for a home service provider.

be provided. Senior service providers vary widely in the types of help they offer people. Some are staffed by nurses or other licensed healthcare providers, which is important if you’re looking for any actual medical care as part of your needs. But for many seniors who don’t necessarily need medical services in their home, there are other providers that focus on helping with day-to-day needs like cleaning, cooking and personal grooming. They’re more like personal assistants to help seniors live a great life, not necessarily offering any nursing care. Make sure you know the difference and ask exactly what kinds of services will be provid-

ed. For medical needs, always talk to your doctor to get advice about what would be best for your situation. The staff Different companies handle staffing in different ways. Most likely, you’ll be assigned a regular person who you can get to know and be comfortable interacting with. Inviting someone into your home is a big responsibility, so it’s important you find someone you can trust and enjoy spending time with. What happens when your regular staffer can’t visit, though? Vacations, illness and other conflicts mean sometimes you’ll need to have a different person do the job, so ask your provider how they handle substitutes

when needed. Track record Find out how long the home care service has been in business. Usually when a company has been around for a long time, that’s a good sign. With a competitive market for in-home care services in most areas, only the best ones will stay in business for a long period of time. You should also find out as much as you can about the firm’s workers. Ask about how much supervision they get, what their qualifications are and how long they’ve worked for the service.

From the frequency of visits to the types of services offered, you need to find a good match for your exact situation. If the in-home service will be helping with any medical needs, your doctor ought to be involved with making the plan. Most home care services will be able to coordinate with your doctor or hospital personnel to come up with a plan of care.

o pt i o Reputation Finally, ask around to learn whatever you can about the service’s reputation. Your doctor, friends and family may be able to tell you their experiences with certain service providers in your area — good or bad — so try to find first-person experiences to make a good choice.

How to Choose a Furniture Store Choosing the right furniture for your home means choosing a furniture store. You may be able to get some ideas of what you’re looking for online, but you’ll always want to see, try out and imagine what those pieces will look like in your home. Because you won’t always find furniture that suits your tastes or style, or works for your budget, the process can be challenging. But it can also be fun. Here are some things to look for in a quality furniture store. Quality that lasts Look for a store that sells quality, long-lasting furniture. While inexpensive accesso-

ries can be bought cheaply and changed often, big furniture investments — sofas, dining tables, and the like — need to be purchased for the long term. That means putting solid construction before a pretty style. Solid construction isn’t always apparent at first glance. It should feel solid, not flimsy, of course. Beyond that, find out as much information as possible about the frame, materials and what kind of warranty it comes with. A well-trained staff can inform you about their furniture, how they’re built and why the construction matters. The best stores have employees who act as guides and

teachers, not pushy salespeople. Value, not just price It is best to pay more for a quality piece than to try to save money on something that will not last in the long term. The bigger the investment, the more important the design and quality become. Concentrate on finding the best value. An inexpensive sofa will not be a good value if it is built with cheap and weak materials. Likewise, the most expensive love seat will have a wise investment if the frame is not built solidly. It’s best to look for brands with a long track record and good reputation.

Service and delivery Every store has a different customer service policy. Choose a store that is well known for being loyal to its customers. Inquire about return policies. Some furniture stores will allow you to exchange an item within a certain time limit if it doesn’t meet your expectations. Learn what fees are involved if you have to return an item — if that is allowed at all. Also, be certain to ask about the store’s delivery policy, including how much it costs, how far they’ll deliver and how quickly your furniture will arrive. If you are comparison shop-

ping, factor in the delivery cost when considering different stores. A low-priced couch will not save you money if it comes with an expensive delivery fee. It may be worth it to pay a little more for the couch if free or reduced cost delivery is available. The bottom line is that there are only two things that matter: the quality of the furniture you are purchasing, and the level of service you receive. Once you discover them both, furniture shopping can be a fun experience that that will beautify your home for many years. And you can be happy and comfortable with the furniture for generations to come.

How to Choose a Propane Company Propane is a “must-have” for gas grills, but it’s also an almost-forgotten option to power almost everything in your home, from HVAC systems to water heaters. Propane is a safe, energy-efficient and affordable — and it’s available almost everywhere. So whether you’re firing up your grill or seeking a reliable alternative or back-up to electricity, propane should be your go-to option. But not all propane companies are alike. You’ll want reliable (sometimes emergency) delivery, a great safety record and, most of all, reasonable prices. Here’s what you want to con-

sider in looking for a propane provider. Reliability Regular customers to any business often get better service. Establish a good relationship with your supplier, particularly if you heat your entire home with propane. The best companies will work hard to develop a strong relationship with you as well. They will treat you with respect. Buy tanks from a reputable company that sells high-quality products. The company should also provide service for the tanks they sell. If you use a propane-fueled

barbecue grill, exchange your empty tank at an authorized propane dealer for the best service. Bringing your tank to a convenience store or big-box retailer may not give you the best value for your money. Price Purchase the best quality tank you can afford. It will last longer than a cheaper one, and you won’t have to worry about leakage. High-quality tanks are made with heavier metal, so they are built to last. Their valves and hoses are not prone to breakage. A high-quality dealer will replace a faulty tank without

question. Also ask about ways to save money on propane. A regular delivery schedule may come with price breaks. Locking in an annual price will help you avoid price fluctuations. Proper standards Propane companies are subject to government requirements and standards. When you visit the office, look for certifications and licenses that should be displayed prominently. If they are not posted, request to see them. Salespeople are also licensed by the government. They should be happy to show you their licensing and certification for your state. Remember that you are pro-

tecting your family, life and property by asking for verification. Any reputable dealer will be more than happy to show their documentation to you. Background Before doing business with any propane company, check their safety and customer service record. State public service commission’s usually oversee propane supplies. Speaking to them can be quite informative. The Better Business Bureau is the best source for information on customer service complaints. Avoid a company with too many safety infractions and too many dissatisfied customers.
