Isle of Wight County Fair

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2019

WELCOME TO THE ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY FAIR

To our Fair Friends and Family DANNY BYRUM Isle of Wight County Fair Chairman

On behalf of the Isle of Wight County Fair Committee, I would like to kindly invite you to our international and statewide award-winning 26th annual County Fair. The committee has planned another great event to honor and celebrate our community. The theme for this year is “Celebrating 25 years — Again” to commemorate Isle of Wight’s deep and strong agricultural heritage. Why 25 years again when it is our 26th year, you may ask? As most of you know, Hurricane Florence caused us to have to shut down the fair in its entirety last year, so as a result we are going to celebrate our 25th — again! We have two events for an early kick-off to the fair this year, with our very popular and exciting Truck & Tractor Pull the night of Saturday, Sept. 7, and the wonderful and delicious Seafood Fest on Wednesday, Sept. 11, featuring the “Hickory Knoll Band,” a regional

favorite. There are several new and exciting things at the fair this year in addition to some of the great attractions we have had in past years. Brand new this year, we are bringing Laser Tag, and best of all, it is free to Danny Byrum our patrons. Another new and exciting thing we are having this year is a Mobile Escape Room, a delightful experience indeed. The Demolition Derby is back again on Sunday afternoon, a huge addition to our fair. The ever-popular Hay Bale decorating contest, is back again, where round bales of hay are decorated by the schools, various businesses and a few by individuals. Remember to vote for your favorite hay bale by visiting our Information Tent. Plus, this year, fair attendees will have a variety of options when ordering advance tickets online, including two- and three-day passes at a discount. We will have the excitement of “Bull Rid-

ing” and “Barrel Racing” at the newly expanded Rodeo arena with real cowboys. In the Field and Garden tent, our local farmers and gardeners can compete for best crops, kids will be able participate in “Farmer for a Day” where they can milk a cow and play with a goat. The little ones can play in a corn/ soybean box or in a big sand box outside the tent. In partnership with the Isle of Wight Schools, there will be goats, rabbits, chickens and maybe even a heifer or two over by the Agriculture Education Center, where they are showcasing their project-based learning farming skills. Our local 4-H folks will feature a feeder pig, heifer show, goat show and ham competitions in the 4-H tent. Be sure to visit our international award-winning Agriculture Education Center, a donated grain bin that houses interactive farm games for kids and flat-screen televisions with various videos featuring planting, growing and harvesting a variety of farm crops and the raising of livestock including

“birthing” of animals. If you watch closely, several videos feature some of our local area farmers. There will be a few added surprise items in that area, including a farm life wall mural that the children will be able to color, and may be able to dig some potatoes or shell some corn with our antique corn sheller. Three ground acts are planned this year including Freestyle Madness, an amazing motorcycle and BMX bike show with many, stunts and jumps, The Circus Incredible, where you will see all sorts of circus-type acts as well as a farm-themed variety show, named Ready, Set, Grow, which is both a stage show as well as a strolling act that will move throughout the fairgrounds, which will not only be fun, but also educational. We have a fantastic entertainment lineup, with performances of several genres, on either the Duke Automotive Stage or the Old Point National Bank Stage almost the entire CONTINUES ON PAGE 3

time the fair is open. The acts playing Friday night are the popular opening band Buckshot, a regional band from Virginia Beach, and headlining is the Restless Heart Band, a band that recently got back together with the entire original group. They had many top hits including “The Bluest Eyes in Texas;” “I’ll Still Be Loving You;” “That Rock Won’t Roll;” and many more. On Saturday night will be national award-winning artist, Chris Lane with chart topping songs such as “Fix;” “Let Me Love You;” “For Her;” “Take Back Home Girl” and currently, in the top ten on Country Radio, is “I Don’t Know About You.” Opening for Chris Lane is the up-and-coming Chase Payne Band from Virginia Beach, who now has a record out, “Loud.” In addition, we have many popular regional and local bands entertaining throughout the fair on both stages, including Blackwater Jam, Island Boy, and on Sunday during the car show, there will be an Elvis Tribute Band featuring Stewart Chapman. Amusements of America will be here to provide a large variety of midway rides for all ages. We will have 24 food vendors (mostly local) to provide a huge variety of wonderful fair food, to satisfy almost any appetite. There will be a talent show, antique motors and tractors,

Isle of Wight County Fair school displays, antique tractor pull, monster truck rides, the car show, and camel and pony rides. Thursday night is carload night where admission and all-you-can-ride wristbands for up to eight legally seated in a car is $45, a very good deal for families. Friday is School Day with special group rates and Senior Day where senior citizens get in from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $1. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are Military Appreciation Days with a valid military ID admission is only $5. As you can see, there is so very much to do, it is nearly impossible to do everything at the fair. It is the Fair Committees’ sincere expectation this years’ fair will be the most unforgettable and fun-filled family event of the year for our community, with a celebration of our agriculture heritage and some education thrown in. We certainly hope you come to visit us and make the most out of what the fair has to offer. Welcome and enjoy every single minute of the 2019 “Celebrating 25 Years … Again” Isle of Wight County Fair. It is our desire to make this one the best yet! Sincerely, Danny Byrum, Chairman, Isle of Wight County Fair President, Virginia Association of Fairs

~ IN MEMORY OF ~ Michael Stephens

T

he 2019 Isle of Wight County Fair will be dedicated to honor the memory of Joseph Michael “Mike” Stephens. Mike provided tireless effort and invaluable service to the Isle of Wight community in a number of ways, but specifically to the County Fair for many years. He was involved with the fair committee from 2004 through 2014, starting with being an Entertainment volunteer, moving on in 2010 to being the Food Vendor chairman, and the vice chairman of Sponsorship 2010- 2012, and becoming the Sponsorship chairman in 2013. He also served as the vice chairman of the Fair in 2010 and became the chairman of the Fair from 2011 through 2013, helping to guide the fair to what it has be-

come today. Mike’s heart and soul was being involved in the fair, as he helped to lead it through a major period of growth, increasing our sponsors, always looking at what could be best for the next fair, while helping to ensure it kept to its heritage and community roots. Through his hard work, enthusiasm and leadership, the fair continued to thrive and helped it become the premier event of the county. For all he did to help grow and make the Isle of Wight County Fair, one of the best in Virginia, we, the fair committee, dedicate this 2019 Fair in memory of Mike Stephens.
