HOËRSKOOL JAN VAN RIEBEECK Krieketdag
Topruiter
UK-Wiskundekompetisie

Julle entoesiasme was aansteeklik.

Rustenburg Girls’ High School Musician excel on Trombone Rustenburg Girls’ High School’s Hope Hadebe (Grade 12) was selected for the 2021 Standard Bank National Schools Jazz Band on Trombone. The audition process consisted of two rounds where she had to prepare two separate recorded audition tapes. As the audition was all digital this year, more individuals were able to take part. Competition was strong, but Hope came out on top as the only trombonist selected at a national level. The band under the directorship of Shaun Johannes, will rehearse for a few days at Stirling High School in East London and then take part at the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz festival in Makhanda. Well done Hope!
SACS Learner came 2nd at the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championship SACS learner Josh Smith to take part in his first international competition at the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championship 2021 in the Canary Island, Spain from the 4 – 6 July 2021. All the hard training paid off, Josh came 2nd in a very competitive junior men field (U18), 24th overall out of 226 competitors from all over the world. He paddled the 26km in 1h41min. What a great race with diverse downwind conditions, challenging side-on turbulent for the first couple of km, huge ocean swell downwind and a short flat sprint to the finish at the end. SACS Old boy Uli Hart winning the U23 age group and 3rd overall! Only 7 paddlers out of the 16 SA team were able to take part in the event due to Covid & Visa complications. They were missed, imagine how SA could have cleaned up – with only 7 paddlers, they won 7 medals! Surfski is definitely a growing sport! Now the training begins for the ICF Canoe Marathon championship from the 26th Sept – 4th Oct 2021 in Romania.

MOOD DISORDERS
KNOW THE SIGNS & WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD
One in eight young people between the ages of 5 and 19 are at risk of developing a mental disorder, of which Mood and Anxiety Disorders are the most prevalent.

SA’S NO1 HIGHER EDUCATION
GUIDE
Emphasis on the mental health of young people recently increased as a result of the disruption caused by Covid-19 and lockdowns which exacerbated challenges that existed before the pandemic. It has therefore once again become important to not only start talking about the mental health of young people, but also to recognise symptoms and know where to look for help, an education and mental health expert says. “The prevalence of mood difficulties among young people is increasingly becoming a concern internationally,” says Dr Jacques Mostert, Brand Academic Manager at ADvTECH, SA’s leading private education provider. Dr Mostert holds a PhD in Psychology of Education and is globally renowned in his field, having conducted experiential research in education in Denmark, the UK, South Africa and The Netherlands. Dr Mostert notes that an estimated 24% of teens between the ages of 11 to 19 suffer from depression caused by the home environment, 25% are subject to cyberbullying and loneliness, 92% of LGBT youth report depression during the ages of 11 to 19, and 80% of teens between the ages of 11 to 19 report a sense of isolation that causes them to feel depressed. “It is very important to understand the signs of depression, so that action can be taken timeously should concerns about the mental wellbeing of a child arise,” says Dr Mostert. “Teachers and parents can recognise the onset of depression when a sudden change in behaviour becomes apparent and continues for at least 3 weeks or longer. These include an atypical lack of energy, becoming increasingly irritable and agitated without a rational explanation, and a sense of being down in the dumps for no reason.” Some adolescents may withdraw from friends and family over a sustained period of time, he notes, adding that this is especially concerning if this is atypical of the normal interactions of the teen.
“Another red flag is the inability to concentrate in class where ADHD or other non-neurotypical difficulties are not present, as well as regularly failing to complete classroom and homework assignments in time or often being late to class because of feeling overwhelmed. “This, coupled with unusually defiant behaviour towards teachers and other school staff, especially if this is non-typical behaviour, may indicate that the teen is experiencing difficulties with mood and affect.” In the same way as with anxiety difficulties and disorder, the student often asks to go home because of feeling ill with no discernable symptoms. The teen often has days off from class time due to doctor’s appointments, hospitalisation, or inability to attend classes. Changes in sleep patterns, a significant weight loss or gain in a short period of time and disinterest in hobbies or areas where the teen previously showed interest also raise concerns about the mental wellbeing of the teenager. Finally, a loss of future-mindedness, or talk about death or suicide, engaging in risky or self-destructive behaviour (drinking alcohol, taking drugs, or cutting, for example) are clear signs of the teen suffering from mood difficulties or a possible mood disorder. “Not all of the above need to be present, but if there is a discernable and drastic change in a young person’s behaviour which continues for a period of several weeks or longer, intervention is necessary,” Dr Mostert says. “Most importantly, parents should trust their gut,” Dr Mostert says. “If your teenager insists that nothing is wrong, despite a prolonged period of depressed mood or being diagnosed with major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder, parents should trust their instincts and seek help. “Should the above techniques not bring about an improvement in the mental wellbeing, parents should seek advice from their medical practitioner or a psychiatrist.”

WYNBERG BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL Wynberg Boys' High celebrates 180th birthday The 1st of July 2021 was a very special day in the history of the school. It was exactly 180 years since our school opened its doors to the first Wynberg students. The entire complement being one staff member, the new Headmaster, Mr John McNaughton, who reported at the end of that year the school 'was now functioning and the total enrolment is 65 pupils, made up of forty-nine males and sixteen females.' I am sure that the founding fathers would be extremely proud of the growth and achievements of the school they founded so many years ago. Successive generations of Wynberg people have certainly done them proud. Since 1841 Wynberg has faced many trials and tribulations with the current challenge arguably one of the most frustrating and disruptive in our long and distinguished history. As we go off on holiday one week ahead of schedule and with rumours already abounding about whether schools will re-open on the 19 July, I wish to commend the entire Wynberg family for the positive way you have faced these confusing times. You have all been truly amazing. The closing of schools early for the midyear break meant we were unfortunately unable to complete all assessments for Grades 10, 11, and 12. Although the marks for completed assessments are live on Engage the final Term 2 report for the Further Education and Training (FET) phase will only be available next term. However, reports will be available for Grades 8 and 9 whose assessment period was completed before 30 June. Although academic results are of the utmost importance, I once again want to emphasise that we are fully aware that many students are struggling to cope with the circumstances in which we find ourselves at present. It is important for the staff and families to take this into consideration when analysing the academic performances and possibly to look beyond the normal interventions in finding solutions to cases of underperformance. The Wynberg Student Support Centre is available to any families needing assistance.

Skills and Interest and Physical Recreation • Robbie showed regular effort and improvement for both categories spread over 12 months. For physical recreation, he chose long-distance running and attended Western Province cross country trials.
The Bosch boys’ winning business proposal is JoyOfMedia.com, a podcast production platform focused on telling the stories of the South African youth. In South Africa – and elsewhere – we are constantly bombarded with news about the youth and news that is generally negative. Alex, Ziyaad & Stefanos are taking advantage of the podcast boom to showcase what the youth really have to say through informative and engaging shows across a variety of genres. Through this platform they aim to inspire and celebrate the future generations of our country. Tom Joubert

And an Adventurous Journey Robbie undertook his adventurous journey in the mountainous regions of Nepal, often in rainy weather and through cloudy regions. Here he had to contend with many obstacles, amongst others, blood-sucking leeches. This journey took place over 6 days and 5 nights, with 8 hours of planned activity each day in a group of people. Apart from completing the four categories, as a gold participant, he also successfully completed a compulsory Residential Project in which he participated for at least 6 consecutive days. This was also done in Nepal where he helped a school clear ground and sand, and painted classrooms and the outside of the school. He also assisted in installing a speaker system for the school’s assemblies. He learned a huge amount about the people of Nepal and gained invaluable experience. Congratulations to Robbie. Over and above his academic responsibilities and daily commitments, he has chosen to take on extra activities that not only empower him as an individual but also impacted on his school and community. You can be very proud of your achievements, Robbie! Robert Allan Davidson

Announcing the 20 schools who have been selected to make their movies for Filmit 33 Schools from South Africa and 2 from Namibia entered 2-minute film pitches for the Filmit competition during the month of June. Our first-round panel of judges consisting of Bradley Joshua from Gambit Films, Moenier Hendricks from Homebrew Films, and Marcel Spaumer and Richard September from Suidooster went through all 70 film concepts pitched by these school groups, and selected twenty they believe have entertainment value, is doable, evoked interest and should make for a good short film. All judges compiled a short video in which they share their professional opinion, observation, and subsequent recommendations on what the 20 approved film groups should focus on when heading into the mentorship programme in preparation for the making of their films. These videos are shared on the Paul Roos Gymnasium YouTube channel.
One-on-one mentorship by industry specialists kick off on the 27th of July. This mentorship will continue over a two-week period up until the 6th of August. It will take place online (via Zoom sessions) and will be presented by five actors from the TV series Suidooster. Each actor will be allocated to four of the participating schools. These actors will guide the learners in the early phases of development of their films. They are Marco Spaumer, Dean Smith, Esther von Waltsleben, Jawaahier Petersen and Eden Classens. The 20 schools who submitted the best film concepts in 2021 and who move on to the next round of the Filmit competition are: • • • • • • • •
Marcel Spaumer The Filmit team wants to inspire all schools who entered (also those who did not qualify to move on to the next round) to up their game and learn how to improve their ideas and concepts, if not for the 2021 competition – then definitely for the 2022 competition. A pre-recorded mentorship video (including advice from industry professionals) on pre-production, production and post-production of films will be shared via the Paul Roos Gymnasium YouTube channel. This video is made available free of charge for all 35 schools who entered the competition. Contributors to this video are Johannes Pieter Nel (director of photography), Louis Pretorius (screenwriter), Zandré Coetzer (Nagvlug Films), Lloyd O’Conner (sound engineer), Fahema Hendricks (director of photography), Braam du Toit (composer), Eva du Preez (editor), Neil Sandilands (acting for the camera) and Michael Botha (postproduction on sound). The mentorship programme was made possible by Atterbury and WeBuyCars. It will be uploaded and available for private streaming on the PRG YouTube channel on the 26th of July 2021.

CAMPS BAY HIGH Government Indigenous Games
WP K1K2 Marathon Champs
Lithemba Silinga, represented the Metro District in the Western Cape Government Indigenous Games in a Game called Ncuva. Lithemba won all her games and will now represent the Western Cape at the Provincial Tournament. This is the second year that Lithemba has been selected to represent Western Cape.
Camps Bay High School Grade 9 learner, Holly Smith from Hout Bay, earned herself two Gold Medals at the WP K1/K2 Marathon Championships hosted by her club, Peninsula Canoe Club in Lakeside.
Ncuva is a board game that was originally played by men or boys to while away time whilst cattle were grazing in the fields. It is now enjoyed by people of all ages and can be used to sharpen maths and strategic thinking skills. The aim of the game is to capture all your opponent's pieces.
Holly came first in the U16 division for K1-singles in a time of 1.32 for 17km, and together with her new partner, Georgia Singe from the Mocke Squad in Fish Hoek, also finished in first place in the K2-doubles in a time of 1.25 for 17km. Camps Bay High School's Head of Sport, Ms Busi Ngcwama, "We are incredibly proud of Holly. She trains almost every morning and every evening putting in many hours on the water to ensure that she is amongst the best paddlers in the country.
WP River Champs

Camps Bay High School Grade 9 learner, Holly Smith from Hout Bay, has done it again! Hot on the heels of her brilliant performance at the SA Marathon Championships held in May, Holly has earned herself a Gold Medal in the Junior Division at the WP River Championships, held on the Berg River.
Camps Bay High School excelled at the WP Youth Squash Open that took place at WPCC this past weekend, with three of our learners flying our flag high and proudly amongst the perennial heavyweights of Rondebosch, Wynberg, Bishops and Herschel.
Holly paddled the 32km stretch of the Berg River which was following strongly with some nice rapids to finish in first place in the Junior Division and she also won a Silver Meal in the Open Division as she was the second overall woman to complete the race.
Grade 12 learner Lochlan Williamson from Hout Bay continued his red hot streak over the past few months by finishing the tournament as the #2 ranked u19 Boys player in WP, and improving his SA National Ranking to #11. It was only 3 months ago that he was ranked #25 in SA, and he is determined to break into the SA Top 10 in July’s National Inter-Provincial Tournament. Grade 11 Learner, Emma du Toit, also from Hout Bay won 3 of her 4 matches in the tournament to improve her WP Ranking to #3 in the u19 Girls Category. Q & A with CKEY CAPTAIN
LIZE WILLEMS FIRST TEAM HO
IVATE SCHOOL
FROM MELKBOSSTRAND PR What makes it special to play for Melkbosstrand Private School’s first team? What makes hockey special is the thrill of it. To me hockey is fun and a sport that constantly keeps me on my toes. What would you consider the strong points of your team this year? Our team hasn’t had much opportunity to play this year but our strong point is definitely our spirit. What motivates you to give your best on the field week after week? What keeps me going is the thought that it could be my last game especially with Covid 19 that took away our hockey season last year. It inspires me to play as if it’s my last match. The girls are also very encouraging on and off the field. Your team has been together for 5 years. What makes your team special? We have seen many players come and go through the years. Since I joined the high school team when I was in grade 7 our team has just grown closer and due to our small team we are more family than anything and our spirit can stand testament to that. What has been your team’s greatest achievement over the past 5 years? Our biggest moment was probably our most recent match against Durbanville even though we lost we baffled them with our big spirit. They were confused and thought that we weren’t aware of the fact that we were losing.
Who is the joker of the team and why? The jokester of the team is probably one of our coaches Mr. Du Plessis as he shouts funny remarks from the sidelines and always knows how to lighten the mood. Especially when we complain he says things like “cry me a river, build a bridge, and get over it” What is the most enjoyable time after a match? The best moment after a match is sitting in a bus on the way home with tired girls screaming songs at the top of their lungs. Who was your matric hero in Gr 8/Gr9? My Matric hero was Tatum Owtrum. Tatum was the captain of our senior team a while back and since I was more experienced and they were short on players I often played for our under 19 team and we ended up playing a very intense match. I can’t recall the school we played against but we lost and came out bruised and beaten andI ended up with two large ringed bruises on my thighs and we were all pretty discouraged after a beating like that. When I got home I received an encouraging message from Tatum saying that she noticed my efforts and it meant so much to me in that moment.
