Teaching degrees 101: from classroom to boardroom, opportunities abound
The education profession has come a long way in the last few decades with the growth of the private education sector, and whereas previously career options for graduates were limited, prospects now abound, an education expert says.
“Because graduates are in demand both domestically and abroad, teaching credentials have grown in popularity. The teaching profession’s career development has also adopted a new perspective in which teachers can go from being school mentors to leadership positions, such as vice chancellor of the university,” says Dr Lindiwe Mokotjo, Head of Faculty: Education at The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s leading private education provider.
The way future teachers should be prepared has drastically changed as a result of the expansion of the teaching profession. The transformation includes understanding the material being taught, how it is being taught, the setting in which learners are being taught, and the fact that each learner is unique and capable of excelling when working with a qualified teacher, says Mokotjo.
As a result, it is imperative that prospective education students ensure
they vet their chosen institution and qualification carefully. There are a number of different education qualifications to choose from, for instance:
• A Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education. This is an entry level/introductory qualification (at NQF Level 5) to the study of early childhood development (ECD) education from birth through to 4 years of age.
• A Bachelor of Education (BEd) in Foundation Phase Teaching (FPT) is an undergraduate professional qualification aimed at preparing students to teach learners from Grades R to 3.
• A Bachelor of Education (B Ed) in Intermediate Phase Teaching. This is an undergraduate professional qualification aimed at preparing students to teach children from Grades 4 to 7.
• A Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Senior Phase (SP) and Further Education and Training (FET) Teaching.
It is important to ensure that the chosen qualification is structured in
accordance with the Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications (2015) or The Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) Policy on Minimum Requirements for Programmes Leading to Qualifications in Higher Education for Early Childhood Development Educators (2017).
Further, to access work-integrated learning in schools, students would need to present a valid Police Clearance Certificate and register with the SA Council for Educators (SACE) in their final year.
“There currently is a significant and growing need for a dynamic pipeline of professional teachers, who are able to bring enthusiasm and innovation not just to the classroom, but to the education profession as a whole.”
Going on a motorhome adventure – your home away from home
At this time of year many family gatherings start to center around the conversation of what they are planning to do for the summer holidays. For many families the past adventures of a road trip in a motorhome may have to wait until the petrol price comes down a bit more. However, everyone may have the pleasure of remembering and reimagining their childhood memories going camping with their family in a caravan or motorhome.
These days it seems like more and more families are choosing to go on holiday with motorhomes. The ease of packing and knowing that your home away from home has everything you need, makes the start of the journey hassle free. Being on the open road and choosing to make a detour anywhere for a picnic or overnight stay is so much fun in a camper van. Whether you are travelling down to the coast or choosing to explore some of the backroads of the cape, South Africa has many scenic camping sites that are waiting to be explored.
Many motorhomes can cater for families up to 6 and come fitted with electricity and gas hubs as well as a microwave, air conditioner and fridge/ freezer. Families with small kids especially enjoy the ease and convenience of sleeping under one roof while enjoying the great outdoors. The ease of setting up camp (they’re equipped with outside tables and chairs as well) leaves so much more time to explore your surroundings and at night the family can gather around the
braai or enjoy card games around the well-lit interior of the motorhome dining table. Some people greatly value to privacy of an onboard bathroom and shower which is standard is most campers these days – so no more excuses for those needing their own WC!
With so many exotic locations and scenic drives to choose from, South Africa really is a motorhome paradise. If you have not tried it yet, you might be in for a very big and comfortable surprise.

The 2022 rugby season has come to an end. Here are some observations on one of the longest seasons in Maritzburg College history:
• Rugby at College remains very strong. The overall win ratio across all 297 matches was 68% - but that figure includes the many tour matches against the best teams in the land and of course the Affies fixture. (Notably, of the losses incurred during the season, 21 were against “higher” teams, on a stagger)
• That win ratio increases to a whopping 87%, when one looks at the across-the-board results against all our KZN opponents (right).
• Also, College’s school-wide commitment to rugby remains unmatched in KZN. No school comes close to matching its 27-29 teams.
• Although the 1st XV would have been disappointed with some of its losses, no-one will deny its courage in adversity, and the verve and panache it showed when on song. The come-from-behind win against Westville BHS – including 35 unanswered points in the 2nd half; the win against Grey High after, again, being down at half-time; the second-half fight-back against Affies; the near-perfect match vs Pretoria Boys High in Pretoria, culminating in a 50-point win - all these and other highlights will live long in the memories of the people who witnessed them.
• College continues to measure itself against the very best teams in the country - with the 1st XV in 2022 contesting matches against Paarl Boys’ High, Grey High, Bishops and Helpmekaar (not to mention Affies, KES etc.). It boldly takes on the best - and does not hide behind so-called “soft” fixtures, to pad its wins! That bold attitude will continue in 2023 - with a fixture list that is likely to include Grey college and Paul Roos.
• Rugby rankings on the internet are dangerous – but here is one (right) that for one doesn’t focus on only one team. Amongst the best rugby schools in the country, College can boast a focus across al it’s A-teams – not to mention its 24 other teams that don’t feature in this calculation.

Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School’s 30th annual Val Fowler Basketball Tournament took place in August with Greenside High School from Gauteng taking the trophy for the first time. The team is undefeated in their province and are now national champions.
The Val Fowler Basketball Tournament is the largest all-girls basketball tournament in the southern hemisphere and welcomed teams from various African countries this year. Over 30 teams participated in the event with games being hosted at St John’s DSG and Maritzburg College as well as Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High.
In second place was Hot Shots Basketball Club from the Western Cape who fought hard to make it to the finals but were no match for Greenside’s dominance; with a final score of 51 – 26.

Congratulations to Edwin Miller (Ralfe, B Block) who has been selected for the Zambian Schools Polo Team. The team will play an international fixture against South Africa in Lions River from the 2nd - 4th of September.
The U14A Water Polo team spent a team building golf day at Gowrie. It was a great day out with Mr Justin McDougall (the coach) winning the day with the lowest score.
Michaelhouse Inter-Schools
The Indoor Centre was positively buzzing with 9 schools, and 132 enthusiastic girls and boys, from schools around the Midlands, competing in the Michaelhouse Inter-Schools’ Quiz.
Contestants met and mingled over snacks and hot chocolate outside, but before long it was time to begin. The quiz was hosted by the B Block TARPS who provided outstanding AV accompaniment, as well as handling the technicalities of marking and scoring. Quizmaster, Mr Coventry kept the competitors on their toes with a steady stream of challenging questions across a variety of categories.
The climax of the evening was the exciting Lightning Round, where the top 4 teams competed headto-head for the top 3 positions (and the enviable prizes that went with them) in a “fastest finger first” round with rapid-fire questions determining the victors overall.
Well done to all the teams who took part and thanks to the teachers who accompanied their teams, as well as to everyone who was involved in the organization of the evening.
