The importance of maths and science in shaping one’s future Maths and science are often considered the two most difficult school subjects that are so often avoided by students, yet they can have a significant impact on what a learner can do when they leave school. STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) skills are critical in today’s fast-paced world, but it is evident that learners in South Africa are showing less of an appetite for subjects like maths and science. This mainly comes down to misconceptions and negative perceptions of maths and science, rather than one’s ability or aptitude for the subject. “Our youth are brought up to believe that maths and science are too difficult, that it has no real value in the real world and, therefore, they are not worth the effort,” says Prof Azwinndini Muronga, Executive Dean of Science at Nelson Mandela University. “What many learners and parents fail to realise is that maths and science are enabling subjects that are a gateway to higher education and beyond,’’ says Prof Muronga. “They lay the foundation in applying knowledge when encountering complex principles competently in the school curriculum, at university and later on in life.”

“Out of the 64 countries, South African learners in Grade 5 scored an average of 374 for mathematics, and 324 for science – far below the 400 basic threshold”

The performances of learners in maths and science are well below par compared to other countries. Out of the 64 countries, South African learners in Grade 5 scored an average of 374 for mathematics, and 324 for science – far below the 400 basic threshold – despite being older than their counterparts. While only 41% of Grade 9 mathematics learners demonstrated that they had acquired basic mathematical knowledge, and just 36% of learners in Grade 9 science learners had acquired basic science knowledge. Cultivating a curiosity through maths and science Young people have a natural curiosity about the world around them. Learnings from maths and science ‘plant the seed’ in gaining an understanding of the order of things and how they work. These skills are honed on the education journey and applied in scenarios that go beyond the classroom, such as in the kitchen, garage, in nature and the rest of tangible reality.

Maths is also beneficial in other areas including problem-solving, quantifying and interpreting data, the comprehension of text, debating, project management, and personal finance. Science and technology can cultivate creativity, observation, analytical research, and can also have an impact on society such as sustainability and environmental conservation.

STEM in ACTION is a community engagement entity within the EBET Faculty. It supports learners, educators, and parents across the educational phases, through a hands-on, brains-on approach within the teaching and learning of physical science. “This constructivist approach, together with a dynamic and enthusiastic STEM in ACTION team, aims to excite learners and motivate them about the science and start considering possible careers paths,” says Prof Muronga.

“Maths and science give learners more choice when it comes to applying to study at university,” says Prof Muronga. “Without them, they would not be eligible for programmes and apprenticeships in the fields of science, engineering and even commerce, as many higher education institutions place a strong emphasis on maths and science,” says Prof Muronga.

What are you looking forward to the most during your term as leader? The most exciting thing about my term is the alleviation of Covid-19 protocols due to the vaccine because it will open up space for us to achieve our goals. The 2022 SRC is a group of energetic and headstrong leaders who want to lay down the foundation of Merrifield tradition, build spirit and foster dignity, respect and acknowledgment within the relationships of the student body.

Who is your role model? Everyone. This may be lame but I just copy the things I like from the people around me. I really am just a projection of my circle, my family and the books I’ve read. What are your plans after matric in 2023? I really just have two plans: study what I’m passionate about and start a project I’ve had in mind focused on rural development. I don’t want to give too much away… If you could be any superhero, who do you want to be and why? I would want to be Doctor Strange because physics is cool and he manipulates it in the coolest way. On a regular Saturday, you will find me.. with..On a regular Saturday, you would find me in bed with a book. I know boring, but it’s the most important activity in the world. Who is your Hollywood celeb crush? Tom Cruise and Henry Cavill

Oliver Jonas Third in Grade 12 (Average over 90%).

Lisa van der Heide Second in Grade 12 (Average over 90%).

Jody Harvey First in Grade 12 (Average over 90%) + Zaheerah Limbada Trophy and Medal for Dux Scholar.

What are you looking forward to the most during your term as leader? I look forward to seeing what challenges the next year brings and seeing what I can do to help the school navigate them. It’s also very exciting having a new bunch of grade 8s coming in, I definitely look forward to showing them exactly why this school is such an awesome environment for them to learn and grow in. What do you love the most about your school? It’s definitely the feeling of family you get when you pass through the gates. The teachers show genuine concern for you and your work, and delight in your triumphs as well as support you in your failures. Not only the teachers, but the students too. There’s a sense of community in the school that I don’t think I would find anywhere else. Who is your role model? There are so many people that I respect and I would love to follow in any of their footsteps, but right now the first person that comes to mind is my brother. Being 8 years older than me, I’ve really learned a lot about life from watching him live his, and to have a big brother which such good, strong qualities has been a blessing.

If you could be any superhero, who do you want to be and why? 100% the Flash, I don’t think there’s any downside to super speed. Who is your Hollywood celeb crush? Margot Robbie.

Lilyfontein School Head Leader

What are you looking forward to the most during your term as leader?

What will your message of encouragement be for your prefects/co-leaders?

What are you looking to the most forward during your term as a leader?

I’m most looking forward to finding ways to make our school the most prosperous and united institution it can be. I want every student that walks the halls of our school to feel that they are in an environment that is conducive to lifelong learning and growth in all aspects and spheres of their life.

We’re here to hit the ground running! Everything that we are doing is to make the high school experience for learners a wholesome journey. We are working towards making Clarendon a happy environment for students and a space in which they are allowed to grow to their fullest potential.

Being able to make a difference in the school and leave a legacy that will continue even when I have matriculated; to represent my school. Being in a leadership allows me to connect and assist my fellow peers.

Is there anything you would like to change at your school?

Who is your role model?

I am goal-orientated, determined, a hard worker and have a caring nature.

I simply want to embrace, promote, improve and add to what we already have. What do you love the most about your school? The quality of education that is provided and the multitude of activities that are available to allow students a variety of paths on which they can develop.

Malala Yousafzai is an excellent example of perseverance, ambition, fearlessness and what it means to fight for what you are passionate about. Her achievements, including being the youngest nobel peace prize recipient, are a display of how much you are capable of. Malala’s leadership has sparked a fire in many hearts of girls around the world which is a commendable feat. If you could be any superhero, who do you want to be and why? Batman would be my choice of superhero because of how he managed to do so much good without necessarily needing superpowers. His ability to think on the spot and be resourceful are traits that I would want to take on in how I carry myself in situations. He never swayed from his goal and he possessed a lot of willpower throughout all of his endeavours. Who is your Hollywood celeb crush? Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively (sorry for bending the rules a little here and stating more than one). He and Blake Lively are mad funny!

Cameron Kruger Border Squash

Kate van Biljon Border Squash

Tshegofatso Bixa Border Chess

Courtney Sansom Border Squash

Kayla Gous Border Waterpolo

Viha Beecum Border Chess

What are your strengths?

What are your weaknesses? I’m a perfectionist and I am frank. Some people don’t like people who tell a spade as it is. Is there anything you’d like to change at your school?

Who is your role model?

I’d like to implement unity and school spirit amongst the learners. I’d also like to start conversations about mental health. Some people find it uncomfortable to talk about mental health, but it is necessary in order to create awareness and educate people.

Zukhanye Mbasa Satyi.

What do you love most about your school?

If you could be any superhero, who do you want to be and why?

I love the fact we are a small school, we are able to get individual attention in class. The teachers are also very caring of their learners, they always go the extra mile to ensure that school is enjoyable, and I absolutely LOVE our adventured based program.
