MOOD DISORDERS KNOW THE SIGNS & WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD One in eight young people between the ages of 5 and 19 are at risk of developing a mental disorder, of which Mood and Anxiety Disorders are the most prevalent. Emphasis on the mental health of young people recently increased as a result of the disruption caused by Covid-19 and lockdowns which exacerbated challenges that existed before the pandemic. It has therefore once again become important to not only start talking about the mental health of young people, but also to recognise symptoms and know where to look for help, an education and mental health expert says. “The prevalence of mood difficulties among young people is increasingly becoming a concern internationally,” says Dr Jacques Mostert, Brand Academic Manager at ADvTECH, SA’s leading private education provider. Dr Mostert holds a PhD in Psychology of Education and is globally renowned in his field, having conducted experiential research in education in Denmark, the UK, South Africa and The Netherlands. Dr Mostert notes that an estimated 24% of teens between the ages of 11 to 19 suffer from depression caused by the home environment, 25% are subject to cyberbullying and loneliness, 92% of LGBT youth report depression during the ages of 11 to 19, and 80% of teens between the ages of 11 to 19 report a sense of isolation that causes them to feel depressed. “It is very important to understand the signs of depression, so that action can be taken timeously should concerns about the

mental wellbeing of a child arise,” says Dr Mostert. “Teachers and parents can recognise the onset of depression when a sudden change in behaviour becomes apparent and continues for at least 3 weeks or longer. These include an atypical lack of energy, becoming increasingly irritable and agitated without a rational explanation, and a sense of being down in the dumps for no reason.” Some adolescents may withdraw from friends and family over a sustained period of time, he notes, adding that this is especially concerning if this is atypical of the normal interactions of the teen. “Another red flag is the inability to concentrate in class where ADHD or other non-neurotypical difficulties are not present, as well as regularly failing to complete classroom and homework assignments in time or often being late to class because of feeling overwhelmed. “This, coupled with unusually defiant behaviour towards teachers and other school staff, especially if this is non-typical behaviour, may indicate that the teen is experiencing difficulties with mood and affect.” In the same way as with anxiety difficulties and disorder, the student often asks to go home because of feeling ill with no discernable symptoms. The teen often has days off from class time due to doctor’s

appointments, hospitalisation, or inability to attend classes. Changes in sleep patterns, a significant weight loss or gain in a short period of time and disinterest in hobbies or areas where the teen previously showed interest also raise concerns about the mental wellbeing of the teenager. Finally, a loss of future-mindedness, or talk about death or suicide, engaging in risky or self-destructive behaviour (drinking alcohol, taking drugs, or cutting, for example) are clear signs of the teen suffering from mood difficulties or a possible mood disorder. “Not all of the above need to be present, but if there is a discernable and drastic change in a young person’s behaviour which continues for a period of several weeks or longer, intervention is necessary,” Dr Mostert says. “Most importantly, parents should trust their gut,” Dr Mostert says. “If your teenager insists that nothing is wrong, despite a prolonged period of depressed mood or being diagnosed with major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder, parents should trust their instincts and seek help. “Should the above techniques not bring about an improvement in the mental wellbeing, parents should seek advice from their medical practitioner or a psychiatrist.”

ST BENEDICT’S COLLEGE

ST ANDREW’S SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

Cricket Success

Swimming

Debating

Ryan Maxl has lead the St Benedict’s College 1st team for the last 2 seasons. He has had tremendous success within the cricketing structures. He represented the Easterns’ u15 (captained the team), at 16 he then represented the Easterns u17 team at the national week where he finished 7th in the leading run scorers. He was then chosen to join the Cricket South Africa (CSA) u19 squad at training camps at the end of 2020 and early 2021. He also represented the Titans u19 cub team in January 2021. Ryan is still in the CSA u19 training squad that is preparing for the u19 world cup.

Hannah Robertson, Grade 11, competed in the 2021 Swimming South Africa Grand Prix in Durban. She swam in the 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle. She placed 2nd in the 100m and 200m freestyle.

Our Grade 8 Debaters took part in the SACEE Debating League recently. After 8 rounds, they were victorious in 4, allowing them to proceed to the Plate Octofinals. With only 32 teams going through, and St Andrew’s breaking 31st out of 76 teams, the girls are preparing very hard to compete in the championship. We congratulate Ropafadzo Chakezha, Zandile Chabane, Angelique Mugadza, Firdaus Martinus and Shoeshoe Thaanyane on their great achievement. We wish them all the best for the upcoming championship!

Hanna qualified in these events to swim at the Junior World Championships which will be taking place in Russia from 24 - 29 August 2021. We wish Hannah all the best for the championship.

We wish Ryan all the best going forward and believe he would do well and add massive value for the CSA u19 team if selected.

Q & A with Y CAPTAIN

CHOENE MANAMELA RUGB

EGE

FROM ST BENEDICT’S COLL

What makes it special to play for St Benedict’s College first team? First team is meant to be the pride and joy of the school and is the highest achievement possible in school sport. Playing for the first team is not just to play for yourself, you play for the school! To play first team rugby for Bennies is sacred, because it has such tradition and meaning. What makes it special is the way the first team upholds those values. Playing first team rugby, you get the chance to experience the liveliness of the coaches, the values we uphold in the change room and the brotherly love of the players. The jersey is special, the players and coaches are special, but the most special thing is the power it has to shape people’s perceptions of the school and how the boys form part of that which is so valuable and sacred. What would you consider the strong points of your team this year? We are a fairly smaller team than years prior and because of that we work twice as hard. We are very physical when called upon to be. The other players and I have to ensure that when we play away we bring war to the opposition’s doorstep because the same is expected when they play us at home. It’s really hard to talk a lot on our strong points given we barely played but I can factually tell you that all of us will give our everything on the field. We are a family and that is greater than any other aspect of our team’s strength. Your team has been together for 5 years. What makes your team special? Our team has had its fair share of ups and downs. We have lost terribly but have won greatly. We have had moments of care for each other, we have had moments of hate for each other but I think what makes my team special is the way we bounce back every time. If one team member is down the other fourteen will help him back up. If fourteen are down the one will do his best to help them up. It is the bond which makes it special, the burden we choose to carry every winter season. Our shared beliefs and values make us differ from other teams.

What has been your team’s greatest achievement over the past 5 years? I remember back in 2018 u.15 we played St John’s. The year before they gave us a hiding of the century but that year we were the ones giving the hiding. What made it special was the fact that we believed in ourselves and stood united. For me that was the greatest game our team has ever played. Who is the joker of the team and why? We are all clowns in the team but the biggest one is Thato Khalo. He always has something to say. Ever since we were in grade 8 he was the person running funny, making jokes, the person always giving factual information but because we were young we didn’t know better. However the one commendable thing about Thato is that when it’s time to be serious, his clowning around disappears. He will give you no less on the field, no less at practice and no less on the day of the game. Along with others in the team he will play like a demon unleashed when given the opportunity but he is the joker of our team without a doubt!

Firdaus Martinus

Hannah Robertson

Rowing The International Commission announced the rowing crews selected to participate at the 2021 World Rowing Junior Championship, to be held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, from 11 - 15 August 2021.

Shoeshoe Thaanyane

We are delighted to inform you that Karire Evans, Grade 12, has been selected as part of the national team. We wish her and her crew all the best for the championship!

Zandile Chabane

What is the most enjoyable time after a match? Before I started playing first team the best time after a game for me was watching the first team rugby play. The first team rugby was the best rugby to watch in the school especially after our team lost. I would watch the first team hoping that they would win. That just shows the power first teams have in sports. Ropafadzo Chakezha

Who was your matric hero in Gr 8/Gr9? I had a lot of heroes in grade 8 and 9. Tino Mwanza, Emihle Gwabe, Ayanda Tomie, Bradley Nenzou and Tshepo Phogole were all my heroes but my biggest hero and inspiration was Tshepo Phogole. I believe he was the best fly half I have ever watched and off the field he was an amazing person. But over the years I had other heroes even from the age group above me like Thabiso Motaung, Sipha Ndaba and Thulane Ngobe. Karire Evans
