MOOD DISORDERS KNOW THE SIGNS & WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD One in eight young people between the ages of 5 and 19 are at risk of developing a mental disorder, of which Mood and Anxiety Disorders are the most prevalent. Emphasis on the mental health of young people recently increased as a result of the disruption caused by Covid-19 and lockdowns which exacerbated challenges that existed before the pandemic. It has therefore once again become important to not only start talking about the mental health of young people, but also to recognise symptoms and know where to look for help, an education and mental health expert says. “The prevalence of mood difficulties among young people is increasingly becoming a concern internationally,” says Dr Jacques Mostert, Brand Academic Manager at ADvTECH, SA’s leading private education provider. Dr Mostert holds a PhD in Psychology of Education and is globally renowned in his field, having conducted experiential research in education in Denmark, the UK, South Africa and The Netherlands. Dr Mostert notes that an estimated 24% of teens between the ages of 11 to 19 suffer from depression caused by the home environment, 25% are subject to cyberbullying and loneliness, 92% of LGBT youth report depression during the ages of 11 to 19, and 80% of teens between the ages of 11 to 19 report a sense of isolation that causes them to feel depressed. “It is very important to understand the signs of depression, so that action can be taken timeously should concerns about the
mental wellbeing of a child arise,” says Dr Mostert. “Teachers and parents can recognise the onset of depression when a sudden change in behaviour becomes apparent and continues for at least 3 weeks or longer. These include an atypical lack of energy, becoming increasingly irritable and agitated without a rational explanation, and a sense of being down in the dumps for no reason.” Some adolescents may withdraw from friends and family over a sustained period of time, he notes, adding that this is especially concerning if this is atypical of the normal interactions of the teen. “Another red flag is the inability to concentrate in class where ADHD or other non-neurotypical difficulties are not present, as well as regularly failing to complete classroom and homework assignments in time or often being late to class because of feeling overwhelmed. “This, coupled with unusually defiant behaviour towards teachers and other school staff, especially if this is non-typical behaviour, may indicate that the teen is experiencing difficulties with mood and affect.” In the same way as with anxiety difficulties and disorder, the student often asks to go home because of feeling ill with no discernable symptoms. The teen often has days off from class time due to doctor’s
appointments, hospitalisation, or inability to attend classes. Changes in sleep patterns, a significant weight loss or gain in a short period of time and disinterest in hobbies or areas where the teen previously showed interest also raise concerns about the mental wellbeing of the teenager. Finally, a loss of future-mindedness, or talk about death or suicide, engaging in risky or self-destructive behaviour (drinking alcohol, taking drugs, or cutting, for example) are clear signs of the teen suffering from mood difficulties or a possible mood disorder. “Not all of the above need to be present, but if there is a discernable and drastic change in a young person’s behaviour which continues for a period of several weeks or longer, intervention is necessary,” Dr Mostert says. “Most importantly, parents should trust their gut,” Dr Mostert says. “If your teenager insists that nothing is wrong, despite a prolonged period of depressed mood or being diagnosed with major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder, parents should trust their instincts and seek help. “Should the above techniques not bring about an improvement in the mental wellbeing, parents should seek advice from their medical practitioner or a psychiatrist.”

What makes it special to play for Saint Andrew’s first team? It is a special feeling to represent St Andrew’s at the highest possible level and having the opportunity to put on a show for my peers and the juniors who come and support the first team. What would you consider the strong points of your team this year? We have a lot of skilled players with flair and speed in attack. What motivates you to give your best on the field week after week? The supporters who believe in us and my fellow teammates who keep me inspired and motivated to work harder than the previous week. Your team has been together for 5 years. What makes your team special? We have a great understanding of each other on and off the field and we are a vibrant group who always try to add something special to our performances. What has been your team’s greatest achievement over the past 5 years? We ended in the Top 20 School sports rankings and won the Free State cup in u/14.

What makes it special to play for Saint Andrew’s first team? It is very special to play for St Andrew’s Bloemfontein and the reason is that there have been many great players in the past. When I was in Grade 8, I found it very exciting to go watch the rugby on Saturdays. I always looked up to them knowing that they worked hard and played their hearts out not only for themselves but for the school. My dream was to be in their shoes playing on Hickling A. With hard work and dedication, I got it right and knowing that I am representing not only myself but also the school, makes it special. What would you consider the strong points of your team this year? I can say that one of our strong points was that we were strong mentally and physically we put countless hours in at the gym, thus not only helping us to get strong but also to prevent injuries. What motivates you to give your best on the field week after week? Success is what motivates me to give my best. Knowing the fact that my hard work and perseverance will help me achieve greater professional success is what keeps me going.
Who is the joker of the team and why? Ethan Goldstone, he always has something funny to say or do.
Your team has been together for 5 years. What makes your team special? The great friendships what have formed over the last 5 years, the close bonds formed, the gym sessions where we’re all together bring great energy to the team and all the laughs we have are what makes a team special.
What is the most enjoyable time after a match? Right after our post-match team talk when everyone is celebrating if we won and if we lost the most enjoyable moment would be our next training session.
What has been your team’s greatest achievement over the past 5 years? Every year pre-Covid we never went home without gold wear, we never lost a local final in 5 years straight and we never lost a player due to an injury as we were well conditioned.
Who was your matric hero in Gr 8/Gr9? Isenam and Indipile Ponco.
Who is the joker of the team and why? Petros Struwig. You can never take him seriously- he always finds a way to break the ice. What is the most enjoyable time after a match? The most enjoyable time after a match is when we get together with a small group of friends around a nice fire and we chat about the game. Listening to the different points of view of my friends, talking about big hits and watching international rugby at night. Who was your matric hero in Gr 8/Gr9? Micheal Walsh - he captained the First Team Rugby in 2016 and was also the head boy of the school. He was a great leader and had so much passion for the sport. Wat maak dit spesiaal om vir Hoërskool Sentraal se eerstespan te speel? Dis spesiaal om vir die eerstespan te speel, omdat ons al so lank en hard gewerk het vir die eer en dit beteken ek is die beste in my skool in my posisie. Wat is die sterkpunte van julle span die jaar? Sentaal se sterkpunte is verseker ons uithouvermoë en dat ons nooit opgee al gaan dit hoe swaar met ons. Wat motiveer jou om Saterdag na Saterdag jou beste op die baan te gee? My motivering is my skool wat agter ons staan en om hulle trots te maak. Julle span kom al 5 jaar saam. Wat maak julle span spesiaal? Ons span is spesiaal, omdat ons saam `n band en gees gebou het wat ek nog nie in ander spanne gesien het nie. Wat is julle span se grootste oomblik die afgelope 5 jaar? Persoonlik is my grootse oomblik vir ons span toe ons almal die eerste keer saam gespeel het en dit als begin het. Wie is die grapgat in die span en hoekom? Erik met `n K van den Berg. Hy sal altyd `n grap uitdink al is ons span agter. Wat is die lekkerste oomblik na `n wedstryd? Lekkerste oomblik na `n game is as ons almal saamkom en ons praat oor die game. Wie was jou matriekheld toe jy in Gr 8/Gr.9 was? Winett Mackenzie was my matriekheld, omdat hy eerstespan gespeel het, maar ook in ander sport presteer het. Cayla Scheepers van Bethlehem Voortrekker Hoërskool het gedurende die naweek van 21 -23 Mei 2021 deelgeneem aan die Vrouens Vrystaat tennistoernooi in Bloemfontein. Cayla eindig 6de! Trekkertrots!
Eunice High School praat afrikaans Eunice High School is ‘n Engels medium Sekondêre Skool in Bloemfontein, maar tog praat hul leerders lekker Afrikaans! Eunice se redenaars het vanjaar in verskeie afdelings aan drie kompetisies deelgeneem: Radikale Redenaar, die ATKV-redenaarskompetisie en Oppi Tong af. Sprekers moes gedurende die 1ste kwartaal vir Radikale Redenaars digitale opnames van hul toesprake maak en vir beoordeling instuur. Geen streeksuitdunne kon plaasvind nie, maar sprekers is wel na die Nasionale rondte uitgenooi. Gedurende die eerste week van Mei moes redenaars, m.b.v. Digi-TV vir die ATKV se kompetisie video-opnames maak en instuur. Drie Eunice leerders het by die ‘Oppi Tong Af’ redenaars (Sunica Bruwer, Dane Engelbrecht en Elke du Plessis) A++’e verwerf. Vyf leerders het ook A+’e gekry! By die ATKV-redenaars kompetisie, het hul ook ‘n A+ en vyf A’s verwerf het. Redenaars moes gedurende die eerste twee weke van die tweede kwartaal op spesifieke tye aanlyn inskakel om hul toesprake vir die Oppi Tong Af-kompetisie te lewer. Elke du Plessis het in die Onvoorbereide afdeling een uur voorbereidingstyd gekry voordat sy vir haar voordrag moes inskakel. In elke kategorie is een leerders per graad per provinsie na die Nasionale Finaal genooi.

Primêre Skool Jordania se 2021 landloopspan Primêre Skool Jordania is baie trots op al die landloopers wat deel is van 2021 se landloopspan. Ten spyte van die Covid-19 pandemie het die leerders hulle self gekondisoneer om gereed te wees vir hierde jaar se landloopseisoen.
Hoër Meisieskool Oranje spog met uitmuntende akademiese prestasies Nóg 11 onderskeidings ná hernasien van Hoër Meisieskool Oranje se aantal vakonderskeidings in die 2020 Nasionale Senior Sertifikaat-eksamen het die 400-kerf verbygesteek. Dít nadat nog 11 leerders ’n onderskeiding behaal het ná hulle vraestelle hernagesien is. Die aanvanklike 390 vakonderskeidings het na 401 toegeneem. Charlize Oosthuizen het nou sewe onderskeidings nadat haar Afrikaans Huistaal 80% geword het. Sy het haar agtste een (79% in fisiese Wetenskap) net-net misgeloop. Ná dese spog Hilda Olivier en Anke Matthee nou met ses onderskeidings, Kayla Janse van Rensburg met vyf en Tammy Cloete, Popi Senokoane en Ané Steenkamp met vier.
