Message from Grey’s Rector Grey High vs Selborne College “It is with great anticipation that we welcome Mr Andrew Dewar, his staff and the men of Selborne College. We always enjoy this derby fixture between our schools and look forward to rekindling friendships and healthy rivalries. As traditional Eastern Cape boys’ schools, we share and celebrate much in common, yet have a wonderful history of positive competition. Derbies such as ours contribute to the strengthening of both schools and shaping our boys. Thank you to all those parents who have travelled to support your sons – I trust that you will enjoy being part of our derby weekend. We look forward to a veritable feast of activities, including a concert with the Grey and Selborne bands, the Farmers Market and many sporting fixtures – may the friendships made during a weekend such as this last a lifetime.”

Chase Morison Coach: Selborne College First Team Rugby What can the school and parents expect from your team this year at the derby against Grey High? It will no doubt be a thrilling game with two big packs of forwards going head-to-head in a contest which will ultimately be decided by which teams pack of forwards gets the upper hand. Where is your strength as a team? This group has proven to be a tenacious bunch and have shown good character in the tight encounters this year.

What is the most difficult part of coaching a school team? Controlling outside influence has become more and more of a challenge and having schoolboys that are committed to various other spheres of school life is a task to balance. Why in your opinion, does school rugby get more competitive each year? There are more resources these days for schoolboy rugby than in any other sport and schools are realizing that if their rugby programme does well, it is one of the biggest advertising tools for the school.

Grey High School What is the highlight of your team’s rugby season this year? I think we have had a good season with a lot of high points, but to name a few will be a win over Rondebosch, which were highly rated opponents from the Cape but also our performance against Grey College, after a surprise lost to Framesby, I think the boys have bounced back really well. How do you motivate your team? I think a big part of my motivation comes from giving the boys a ‘why’, Why do we play rugby? Why do you want to win? Why do you want to play for this team? I think that gives great motivation for the boys and just on the field to be a constant voice in their ear giving them motivation in case something doesn’t go their way that they can do better next time and that there is always another carry, another catch and pass to make.
Are you happy with your team’s line-up for Saturday’s derby? Do you have any injuries in your team? We do have a few injuries in key positions but overall, I think the team is looking strong and we have a good enough starting line-up to get the job done as well as a strong bench.
What is the highlight of your team’s rugby season this year? The highlight of the season will definitely be realising that what we have as a team is special and knowing the brotherhood we have.
What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make you proud? We as a team have achieved quite a lot this season, but to simply put it, just to win this last game against Selborne College. It is a massive derby in the Eastern Cape and just to end the season on high note will make me extremely proud of these boys.
Who is your vice-captain and how does he support you? Aaron van Dyk is the vice-captain, and he supports me in many ways and is always there when I need him.
xxxxxxxxx
Who is your vice-captain and how does he support you? xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx My vice-captain is Byran Forward, we have a great xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx relationship on and off the field. He supports me during the game if I am feeling a bit down or when I’m not too motivating. He is always there to take my place, when need be, and he gives me great advice when I don’t quite know what to do or which decision to make.
Bian van Eden Coach: Grey High School First Team Rugby
y
What are your plans for the future? Next year I plan to go to Stellenbosch University to further my studies, I don’t have a rugby plan for my future but I do intend to play at a social level for years to come.
How do you motivate your team? The team is not difficult to motivate as it comes from within. We all support one another, so we all motivate each other.
Are you happy with your team’s line-up for Saturday’s derby? Do you have any injuries in your team? I am very happy with our team and I know we will give it our best. What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make you proud? The first team wants to play without regrets and we want to play for something bigger than ourselves, which for us is the UBUKO initiative and Tries for Lives. What are your plans for the future? I want to carry on doing what I love, which is playing rugby and furthering my studies.
What can the school and parents expect from your team this year at the game against Selborne College? They can expect a game that is going to be very competitive, it is going to be very intense and physical, especially up front with a lot of talent and excitement in the backline, so I think the interchanging between the two phases of play will be pleasing on the eye. Where is your strength as a team? Our strength as a team is our team culture and our ‘why’ - why are we playing for each other, why do we enjoy representing the school. From a technical side we have a good forward pack who are well coached and backline players that know when the opportunity arrives, they must take it.
What is the most difficult part of coaching a school team? There are time constraints with school, and you only have afternoons to get the players fit and conditioned. Why in your opinion, does school rugby get more competitive each year? I think rugby is seen as a professional sport and there are a lot more people making a living out of rugby these days than in the past. Therefore, there are a lot more boys who want to play rugby at a higher level, and that’s why it is getting more competitive.

What can the school and parents expect from your team this year at the derby against Selborne? The parents and the school have already seen what we are capable of as a team and what type of product of hockey we are trying to put out there, and I think there is a bit of blood in the water. So I think the boys are going to come out blazing and it’s about controlling the game and their emotions and mixing it with a bit of good intensity and taking control of the opposition. Where is your strength as a team? Our strength as a team is exactly that, that we are a team. Hockey is a game where the ball moves quicker than what the players can, and I think we execute that style of hockey very well. We pass the ball around the field well, we are a well-structured team and the guys know their roles. We will be looking to do that going forward into the fixture against Selborne College and dominating as the best hockey school in the country and certainly in the Eastern Cape. What is the most difficult part of coaching a school team? I think the hardest thing about coaching at school is to juggle the guy’s expectations between their different activities culturally, academically and sport wise. Grey High School obviously have quite a high demand of performance in the school, at the hockey club we expect dedication and growth and that takes time of the boy’s schedule. If you have a committed structure where the boys are all buying in, then it seems to work. Obviously, we try to work around everyone’s schedule and other sporting codes and the academics, but with some good communication we seem to get it right and that is by far the most challenging aspect.
Grey High School What is the highlight of your team’s hockey season this year? I think one of the team’s biggest highlights must be beating Grey Bloem 2 – 0 in Bloemfontein, either that or beating Hilton College at Tourney Garden in East London early in the season, but both were very big games for us, and the boys managed to arise to the occasion. How do you motivate your team? Generally, I don’t really have to motivate the boys because they are always locked in before every game, they are always focused and know they have a job to do ahead of them. Normally we get together an hour before the game and chat, banter a bit, get in the zone, and just switch on as a team. Are you happy with your team’s line-up for Saturday’s derby? Do you have any injuries in your team? I think that everyone who comes into the team is a quality player and we always back them. We had about one or two injuries, but that doesn’t change the fact that they are quality players coming up into our system and that we back them one hundred percent.
What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make you proud? I think our main goal coming to the back end of the season is beating Selborne College. If we do manage to beat them, we will be undefeated this year - that will be a proud moment for the team. What are your plans for the future? My plans are still very undecided at the moment. I am always pushing one way and then life throws me another curveball that sort of changes my decision, but I think one of my big options is to go to Holland and play for a club and try my best to make the best of the situation.

What can the school and parents expect from your team this year at the game against Grey High? The school and parents can expect a steady performance. The boys have improved nicely throughout the year. They always give their best and I am sure they will continue to do so. This is the last derby for the matric players. Where is your strength as a team? The boys never give up and work for each other and I expect a steady all-round performance from the squad. What is the most difficult part of coaching a school team? As a hockey coach, the boys are so busy and that is sometimes difficult to manage. We need to ensure that they have a balanced life.

Selborne College What is the highlight of your team’s hockey season this year? At the start of the season, we hosted the Nomads Festival, which featured some of top schools in the school; unfortunately, we didn’t do well, however after that festival we participated in the Grey PE Hibbert Shield where we came 4th out of 12 schools. The boys showed great mentality and determination to bounce back. How do you motivate your team? I tell the boys that they are aware of what we have to do. I tell them that if we play for each other and something bigger, we will end the game with a positive outcome. Who is your vice-captain and how does he support you? Nqaba Bashe. I would say I am a reticent person, so he pretty much does most of the talking and I always ask for his opinion when making decisions.
injuries in your team? Yes, I am happy with our line-up, and fortunately, we have no injuries. What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make you proud? We want to become the best possible versions of ourselves and win more games than we lose obviously. The boys play their hearts out, sweating, bleeding and even crying for the badge and I am extremely proud of them. What are your plans for the future? I am planning to study IT next year, definitely playing hockey and hopefully get the opportunity to play at the highest level possible. I have received offers from UFS and NMU to play hockey while studying there, so those are my options now.
Are you happy with your team’s line-up for Saturday’s derby? Do you have any
