What are you looking forward to the most during your term as leader?
What do you love the most about your school?
What are you looking forward to the most during your term as leader?
I am looking forward to working together with an amazing group of people, the learner council of 2022, to have a positive impact on the schools learners by filtering the values of Parel Vallei through each and every one of them. I am so excited to help reinforce the foundation of pride for the school and learners achievements.
I love the close knit community we have between learners and teachers. No matter where you are involved in the school whether it is hockey, choir or drama you feel a sense of belonging. The friendly and accepting atmosphere that roams through the corridors and out on the sport fields brings learners of all cultures together.
I am definitely looking forward to serve the school as best I can and helping and motivating the rest of the school to achieve success.
Is there anything you would like to change at your school?
What will you message of encouragement be for your prefects/co-leaders?
I would like to implement a tradition where all learners want to come and support sport and cultural activities. To form an even stronger sense of unity within our school. I want to reconnect the BLUE THREAD that runs between each and every learner of this school.
This year will be filled with obstacles and challenges, but you are not in this ALONE. We will always be here for you to hold you up when you feel the world is crumbling under your feet. A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor! Believe in yourself in everything that you do and know that you are capable of anything. “When life gets you down do you know what you’ve gotta do? JUST KEEP SWIMMING!” -Dory
What are your strengths and weaknesses? I would say my strengths are being able to work under pressure and meet deadlines as well as motivating others to help them succeed! Is there anything you would like to change at your school? I would like to establish even more pride in the school so that learners feel proud of being part of our school and do their very best. What do you love the most about your school?
If you could be any superhero, who do you want to be and why?
I love that our school has a place for every child, whether it is culturally, sport or academically. Its really great to see our school providing many opportunities for us learners.
I would be a superhero who can stop time and therefore always have more than enough time in the day to finish what needs to be done.
What will you message of encouragement be for your prefects/co-leaders?

Tumelo Chepape Well done and congratulations to Tumelo who participated in the Puma School of Speed series at Dal Josephat Stadium in Paarl. He received a silver medal for boys u.17 400m with a stunning time of 48.7s.
500 Club - Josh Steyn
During the month of October, Caleb was selected as the player of the month for his team NTY Youth Academy. He scored the most tries in the rugby derby against Panorama School, Hamilton’s Rugby Club and Vusa Rugby.
This morning we witnessed history as Josh Steyn in Grade 12, became the first learner from our school who received his 500 club badge and a very special shirt. This means that Josh has completed 500 laps which totals 500km’s of running! What made it even more special was that his mother and father could both witness and celebrate this massive moment with him. Well done Josh and we wish you all the best with the rest of your final IEB exams.
He was also selected to play with the u.14 boys in the United World Games (UWG) that will take place in Vienna next year June under the patronage of UNESCA. They will be the only team representing, not only our Province but our country as well. Well done Caleb. We look forward to watching you score a try for the Green and Gold one day.

The importance of maths and science in shaping one’s future Maths and science are often considered the two most difficult school subjects that are so often avoided by students, yet they can have a significant impact on what a learner can do when they leave school. STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) skills are critical in today’s fast-paced world, but it is evident that learners in South Africa are showing less of an appetite for subjects like maths and science. This mainly comes down to misconceptions and negative perceptions of maths and science, rather than one’s ability or aptitude for the subject. “Our youth are brought up to believe that maths and science are too difficult, that it has no real value in the real world and, therefore, they are not worth the effort,” says Prof Azwinndini Muronga, Executive Dean of Science at Nelson Mandela University. “What many learners and parents fail to realise is that maths and science are enabling subjects that are a gateway to higher education and beyond,’’ says Prof Muronga. “They lay the foundation in applying knowledge when encountering complex principles competently in the school curriculum, at university and later on in life.”
“Out of the 64 countries, South African learners in Grade 5 scored an average of 374 for mathematics, and 324 for science – far below the 400 basic threshold”
The performances of learners in maths and science are well below par compared to other countries. Out of the 64 countries, South African learners in Grade 5 scored an average of 374 for mathematics, and 324 for science – far below the 400 basic threshold – despite being older than their counterparts. While only 41% of Grade 9 mathematics learners demonstrated that they had acquired basic mathematical knowledge, and just 36% of learners in Grade 9 science learners had acquired basic science knowledge. Cultivating a curiosity through maths and science Young people have a natural curiosity about the world around them. Learnings from maths and science ‘plant the seed’ in gaining an understanding of the order of things and how they work. These skills are honed on the education journey and applied in scenarios that go beyond the classroom, such as in the kitchen, garage, in nature and the rest of tangible reality. “Maths and science give learners more choice when it comes to applying to study at university,” says Prof Muronga. “Without them, they would not be eligible for programmes and apprenticeships in the fields of science, engineering and even commerce, as many higher education institutions place a strong emphasis on maths and science,” says Prof Muronga.
Maths is also beneficial in other areas including problem-solving, quantifying and interpreting data, the comprehension of text, debating, project management, and personal finance. Science and technology can cultivate creativity, observation, analytical research, and can also have an impact on society such as sustainability and environmental conservation.
STEM in ACTION is a community engagement entity within the EBET Faculty. It supports learners, educators, and parents across the educational phases, through a hands-on, brains-on approach within the teaching and learning of physical science. “This constructivist approach, together with a dynamic and enthusiastic STEM in ACTION team, aims to excite learners and motivate them about the science and start considering possible careers paths,” says Prof Muronga.
