MOOD DISORDERS KNOW THE SIGNS & WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD One in eight young people between the ages of 5 and 19 are at risk of developing a mental disorder, of which Mood and Anxiety Disorders are the most prevalent. Emphasis on the mental health of young people recently increased as a result of the disruption caused by Covid-19 and lockdowns which exacerbated challenges that existed before the pandemic. It has therefore once again become important to not only start talking about the mental health of young people, but also to recognise symptoms and know where to look for help, an education and mental health expert says. “The prevalence of mood difficulties among young people is increasingly becoming a concern internationally,” says Dr Jacques Mostert, Brand Academic Manager at ADvTECH, SA’s leading private education provider. Dr Mostert holds a PhD in Psychology of Education and is globally renowned in his field, having conducted experiential research in education in Denmark, the UK, South Africa and The Netherlands. Dr Mostert notes that an estimated 24% of teens between the ages of 11 to 19 suffer from depression caused by the home environment, 25% are subject to cyberbullying and loneliness, 92% of LGBT youth report depression during the ages of 11 to 19, and 80% of teens between the ages of 11 to 19 report a sense of isolation that causes them to feel depressed. “It is very important to understand the signs of depression, so that action can be taken timeously should concerns about the
mental wellbeing of a child arise,” says Dr Mostert. “Teachers and parents can recognise the onset of depression when a sudden change in behaviour becomes apparent and continues for at least 3 weeks or longer. These include an atypical lack of energy, becoming increasingly irritable and agitated without a rational explanation, and a sense of being down in the dumps for no reason.” Some adolescents may withdraw from friends and family over a sustained period of time, he notes, adding that this is especially concerning if this is atypical of the normal interactions of the teen. “Another red flag is the inability to concentrate in class where ADHD or other non-neurotypical difficulties are not present, as well as regularly failing to complete classroom and homework assignments in time or often being late to class because of feeling overwhelmed. “This, coupled with unusually defiant behaviour towards teachers and other school staff, especially if this is non-typical behaviour, may indicate that the teen is experiencing difficulties with mood and affect.” In the same way as with anxiety difficulties and disorder, the student often asks to go home because of feeling ill with no discernable symptoms. The teen often has days off from class time due to doctor’s
appointments, hospitalisation, or inability to attend classes. Changes in sleep patterns, a significant weight loss or gain in a short period of time and disinterest in hobbies or areas where the teen previously showed interest also raise concerns about the mental wellbeing of the teenager. Finally, a loss of future-mindedness, or talk about death or suicide, engaging in risky or self-destructive behaviour (drinking alcohol, taking drugs, or cutting, for example) are clear signs of the teen suffering from mood difficulties or a possible mood disorder. “Not all of the above need to be present, but if there is a discernable and drastic change in a young person’s behaviour which continues for a period of several weeks or longer, intervention is necessary,” Dr Mostert says. “Most importantly, parents should trust their gut,” Dr Mostert says. “If your teenager insists that nothing is wrong, despite a prolonged period of depressed mood or being diagnosed with major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder, parents should trust their instincts and seek help. “Should the above techniques not bring about an improvement in the mental wellbeing, parents should seek advice from their medical practitioner or a psychiatrist.”

Marais Viljoen High School Celebrated 60th Birthday This year Marais Viljoen High is 60 years old! With the Covid 19 pandemic all our plans are in vain. So there for it is going to be a silent but happy day for Marais Viljoen High school. We would, however, like to thank every learner, staff member, parent, alumni, sponsors, and friends of Marais Viljoen for their loyalty to this amazing school. As you drive by the school in the morning, you will notice our new celebration boards, which is just a small gesture to remind everybody about this big celebration. We also bought 20 new garden benches which are placed all over the schoolgrounds for the learners. Every learner will also receive a “60-year anniversary” pin for their blazers. The house Mother -Thandi, was very appreciative of the very generous food donations from the school, since it’s really needed for the children at this time. Wat maak dit spesiaal om vir Hoërskool Alberton se eerstespan te speel? Wat dit vir my spesiaal maak om vir Hoërskool Alberton se eerste-hokkiespan te kan speel, is die feit dat ek ongelooflik baie onderskat was in laerskool. Daar was altyd vir my gesê ek is nie goed genoeg nie, maar kyk waar is ek nou. My ma het altyd vir my gesê dat ek nie myself moet steur aan die negatiewe kommentaar nie, want dit is doodeenvoudig net kommentaar en nie feite nie. Ek het haar woorde elke dag saam my gedra. Ek het hard gewerk vir dit wat ek wil hê. Ek het myself nuwe dinge geleer. Ek het myself oor en oor bewys, Juffrou Coston en Juffrou Rouxné Pienaar het dit raakgesien. Daarom is dit vir my spesiaal om vir die eerstespan van Hoërskool Alberton te speel. Wat is die sterkpunte van julle span die jaar? Die sterkpunte van ons span hierdie jaar is dat ons 2 uitstekende afrigters het. Ons “backs” en ons “forwards” weet hoe om mekaar se spel te lees. Ons kan met mekaar op die veld praat en mekaar help. Die grootste sterkpunt is dat ons weet daar is altyd plek vir verbetering, maak nie saak hoe goed jy reeds is nie.

Wat motiveer jou om Saterdag na Saterdag jou beste op die veld te gee? Die dinge wat ons die meeste motiveer om Saterdag na Saterdag ons beste op die veld te gee, is beslis die feit dat ons onsself aan ons afrigters wil bewys, want hulle sit soveel tyd, aandag, liefde en detail in ons oefening en “gameplan” in, dat dit die minste is wat ons vir hulle kan doen. Wat ons ook motiveer, is ‘n “Rescue” voor ‘n wedstryd en om ‘n doel aan te teken sodat ons “sheesh” kan skree. Wat maak julle span spesiaal? Ons span is ‘n familie. Almal kom oor die weg. Ons afrigters laat ons nie net soos ‘n nommertjie voel nie, want hulle sien ons vir wat ons is en wat ons kan wees. Ons almal deel dieselfde passie vir die sport. Ons het ons eie unieke “inside-jokes”. Almal is spesiaal vir mekaar en dis wat ons span spesiaal maak. Wat is julle span se grootste oomblik die afgelope 5 jaar? Die eerste-hokkiespan se grootste oomblikke die afgelope 5 jaar, is dat ons eerstespan in 2018 die liga onoorwonne gewen het. Hulle het dit ook tot die Semi-finale gemaak by Noordvaal. In 2019 het ons die voorreg en geleentheid gehad om in Namibië te gaan toer en daardie jaar het ons ook Noordvaal gespeel. Wie is die grapgat in die span en hoekom? Jenna Clark is beslis die grapgat van ons span. Sy is die snaakste persoon wat ek al ooit ontmoet het. Sy het altyd iets snaaks te sê oor enige iets wat gebeur. Sy is skerp en kan vinnig op haar voete dink en dis wat haar so snaaks maak. Sy het soms dowwe oomblikke, maar dis die beste oomblikke. Sonder haar sou ons nie so baie gelag het soos wat ons doen met haar nie.

Wie is die grapgat in die span en hoekom? Jaydin Thompson. Sy sorg altyd vr ‘n ekstra glimlag, al voel ons soms teneergedruk, dan maak sy ‘n grappie of twee om ons op te beur. Sy het altyd ‘n glimlag op haar gesig en ‘n positiewe houding. Wat is die lekkerste oomblik na `n wedstryd? Om die trots in jou afrigter se oë te sien na ‘n wedstryd, al het ons verloor, maar steeds ons beste gegee. Wie was jou matriekheld toe jy in Gr 8/Gr.9 was? Ek het eers van graad 10 af vir Hoërskool Alberton begin netbal speel. Jessy Faber was ‘n jaar voor my in die eerstespan, sy het altyd haar beste gegee, maak nie saak wat nie. Sy het altyd haar hart uitgespeel en almal anders moed ingepraat.
Wie is die grapgat in die span en hoekom? Ouintin Nel, met sy bynaam as Kwagga is dit baie moeilik om hom ernstig op te neem. Hy het altyd iets te sê en gee nie om hoe ernstig die oomlik is nie. Ons geniet hom vreeslik. Wat is die lekkerste oomblik na `n wedstryd? Die busrit terug skool toe. Die musiek wat speel en die krete wat geskree word. Wie was jou matriekheld toe jy in Gr 8/Gr.9 was? Jonathan Potgieter, hy was eerstespankaptein toe ek in Graad 9 was. Hy was ’n uitstekende rugbyspeler met baie trots vir die trui. Their intelligent and insightful debate about whether karma exists or if we are responsible for shaping our own lives, presented challenging thoughts and ideas. Their ability to argue, debate and challenge proves how vital it is to be able to express yourself in an ever-changing world in order to confront the hypocrisies and lies that we are faced with on a daily basis. Grade 10 On Wednesday, 2nd June, two Grade 10 Public Speaking teams from Marist Brothers Linmeyer recorded their speeches for 2021. The theme of diamonds was explored and both teams came up with interesting, thought- provoking speeches, talking about celebrities worshipping diamonds as a symbol of status and wealth or highlighting the sad reality of people losing their lives in search of blood diamonds. These two teams really delved into this topic with determination. Once again, teamwork was what made it all come together. Team 1 achieved a B and Team 2 was awarded a B+. The school is super proud of these keen historians, social critics and storytellers who once again carried the Marist name with pride.

Wat maak dit spesiaal om vir Hoër Volkskool Heidelberg se eerstespan te speel? Dit bly ‘n groot eer om te weet jy vorm deel van die span wat die room van jou skool se netbal vorm. Die trots wat gepaard gaan met Hoër Volkskool se wapen wat op my linkerbors is, is eenvoudig net onvervangbaar. Wat is die sterkpunte van julle span die jaar? Ons span is gedurende die jaar gekonfronteer met talle onverwagte beserings, maar ten spyte hiervan, het elke lid hulle skoene volgestaan, hul beste gegee en deursettingsvermoë getoon. Ons sterkpunt is die feit dat ons nie terugdeins vir struikelblokke nie. As ons eers ons kop op iets neergesit het, gaan ons daarvoor. Wat motiveer jou om Saterdag na Saterdag jou beste op die baan te gee? Netbal is my passie en as iets ‘n passie is, kom die gretigheid en lus om jou beste te lewer (vir jou afrigter, jou span, jou skool, jou ouers, God en jouself) vanself. Die feit dat ek kan sien hoe harde werk beloon word , is ‘n groot motiveringsmiddel. Julle span kom al 5 jaar saam. Wat maak julle span spesiaal? Ons is nie net ‘n span nie, ons is ‘n familie. As een persoon ‘n af dag het, is ons span daar as ondersteuningsisteem wat bydra tot ‘n “great” spanomgewing. Ons “gel” net goed. Ons span is gedoop as die “Bratz” en dit is vir ons nogal spesiaal. Die eerste een is toe ons amper ‘n wen afgetrek het teen Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool Pretoria en tweedens toe ons die Super Reeks finaal teen Hoërskool Dinamika gewen het as 0/15’s. Wie is die grapgat in die span en hoekom? Demi du Toit – sy het altyd ‘n grappie of ‘n opmerking wat die span laat lag. Sy het die meeste gees van ons almal. Sy is verseker gebore met die “JOKER”-gene. Wat is die lekkerste oomblik na `n wedstryd? Ons afrigter se gelukwensings en manier hoe sy elke speler komplimenteer op hulle spel en dan natuurlik die Steri Stumpies. Wie was jou matriekheld toe jy in Gr 8/Gr.9 was? Monique Minnie, sy was vir my ‘n groot bron van motivering en inspirasie. Sy was ook ‘n ideale voorbeeld van ‘n goeie kaptein.

Wat maak dit spesiaal om vir Dinamika se eerstespan te speel? Die span was nog nooit vreeslik groot nie en het nie drasties verander in die laaste 2 jaar nie, so die span het al soos familie geword wat dit lekker maak om saam met hulle as Dinamika se eerstespan te speel. Wat is die sterkpunte van julle span die jaar? Die span kom al lank saam so ons konneksie met mekaar op die veld is beter. Ons draai `n fout om in iets wat kan doen wat ons sal laat wen, of dit nou attack is of defence is. Wat motiveer jou om Saterdag na Saterdag jou beste op die veld te gee? Ek het hiedie sport begin in die 2de kwartaal van graad 8 en het dit meer geniet as enige ander sport wat ek voorheen gespeel het. Die span voel teen die tyd ook soos familie, so dit is altyd lekker om saam met hulle te speel. Julle span kom al 5 jaar saam. Wat maak julle span spesiaal? Ons span maak heeltemal te veel grappies, so dit mag dalk lyk asof ons nie aandag gee gedurende oefening nie, maar sit ons in `n wedstryd en ons presteer. Wat is julle span se grootste oomblik die afgelope 5 jaar? Die grootste oomblik sal seker wees toe ons span amper die liga gewen het. Wie is die grapgat in die span en hoekom? Tegnies is die hele span die grapgat, maar speler gewys is dit Darien en Jethro wat die grappe maak in die span. Hulle kan enige tyd in die wedstryd/oefening `n grap maak om die span te laat ontspan. Wat is die lekkerste oomblik na `n wedstryd? Seker die bus oppad terug huis toe. Gewoonlik sal `n span uitgeput wees na `n wedstryd. Wat is die sterkpunte van julle span die jaar? Die manne is baie hardwerkend en hulle gee nie sommer maklik op nie en hulle speel hul harte uit tot die laaste minuut. Hulle weet wanneer om saam te staan en saam te trek wanneer dinge swaar gaan.

Wat motiveer jou om Saterdag na Saterdag jou beste op die veld te gee? Die feit dat ek weet my spanmaats en vriende maak staat op my om my kant te bring elke dag by oefening en elke Saterdag op die veld. Ek is nie bereid om hulle teleur te stel nie. Julle span kom al 5 jaar saam. Wat maak julle span spesiaal? Ons broederskap. Ons span het al deur swaar tye gegaan met beserings en onnodige drama, maar tog het ons dinge reg gekry. Ons het al saam gewen, saam verloor dag-in-en-dag-uit op daardie veld gesweet en gebloei en die band tussen ons is net iets spesiaals. Dis nie iets wat sommer gebreek kan word nie. Wat is julle span se grootste oomblik die afgelope 5 jaar? In my opinie was dit gewees toe ons op ons U/16 Hansie Week teen Hans Strydom op ons 5m lyn vir so lank verdedig het, hulle kon net nie punte aanteken nie. Daardie paar minute het soos ‘n ewigheid gevoel, maar weereens het die manne deurgetrek en hulself bewys! Wie is die grapgat in die span en hoekom? Sonder enige twyfel kan ek sê PLATTIE. Plattie is net `n ander karakter. Sy sin vir humor is op ‘n ander vlak en soos ons span sal sê, somtyds bietjie bar! Wat is die lekkerste oomblik na `n wedstryd? Om te sien hoe opgewonde die ouens is en die glimlag op elke liewe ou se gesig. Dis iets besonders om te sien. Wie was jou matriekheld toe jy in Gr 8/Gr.9 was? Ek het baie opgekyk na Jaques Venter, want hy was net ‘n monster op die veld gewees en ‘n mens kon sien hy maak `n verskil in daardie span. Announcing the 20 schools who have been selected to make their movies for Filmit 33 Schools from South Africa and 2 from Namibia entered 2-minute film pitches for the Filmit competition during the month of June. Our first-round panel of judges consisting of Bradley Joshua from Gambit Films, Moenier Hendricks from Homebrew Films, and Marcel Spaumer and Richard September from Suidooster went through all 70 film concepts pitched by these school groups, and selected twenty they believe have entertainment value, is doable, evoked interest and should make for a good short film. All judges compiled a short video in which they share their professional opinion, observation, and subsequent recommendations on what the 20 approved film groups should focus on when heading into the mentorship programme in preparation for the making of their films. These videos are shared on the Paul Roos Gymnasium YouTube channel.
One-on-one mentorship by industry specialists kick off on the 27th of July. This mentorship will continue over a two-week period up until the 6th of August. It will take place online (via Zoom sessions) and will be presented by five actors from the TV series Suidooster. Each actor will be allocated to four of the participating schools. These actors will guide the learners in the early phases of development of their films. They are Marco Spaumer, Dean Smith, Esther von Waltsleben, Jawaahier Petersen and Eden Classens. The 20 schools who submitted the best film concepts in 2021 and who move on to the next round of the Filmit competition are: • • • • • • • •
Marcel Spaumer The Filmit team wants to inspire all schools who entered (also those who did not qualify to move on to the next round) to up their game and learn how to improve their ideas and concepts, if not for the 2021 competition – then definitely for the 2022 competition. A pre-recorded mentorship video (including advice from industry professionals) on pre-production, production and post-production of films will be shared via the Paul Roos Gymnasium YouTube channel. This video is made available free of charge for all 35 schools who entered the competition. Contributors to this video are Johannes Pieter Nel (director of photography), Louis Pretorius (screenwriter), Zandré Coetzer (Nagvlug Films), Lloyd O’Conner (sound engineer), Fahema Hendricks (director of photography), Braam du Toit (composer), Eva du Preez (editor), Neil Sandilands (acting for the camera) and Michael Botha (postproduction on sound). The mentorship programme was made possible by Atterbury and WeBuyCars. It will be uploaded and available for private streaming on the PRG YouTube channel on the 26th of July 2021.
