3. Verandering in geaardheid

Fisies (skop, slaan of boks);

Verbaal (noem kinders name, dryf die spot met hulle of maak dreigemente);

Emosioneel (sosiale uitsluiting, intimidasie deur gebare of dreigemente);

Rassistiese afknouery;

Seksueel; en

Kuberafknouery (deur die internet op sosiale media soos Facebook; of deur selfone met haatboodskappe of afdreiging)

Onverklaarbare beserings soos kneusplekke, snye en krapmerke;

2. Veranderinge in slaappatrone

Verlies aan eetlus of verandering in eetgewoontes;

Vernielde of verlore skoolboeke, klere, of elektroniese toestelle; of

Gereelde klagtes oor maagpyn, hoofpyn, naarheid of dat hy siek voel.

The importance of developing organisational skills from a young age Developing organisational skills is important in holistic child development, and a key step in their path towards independence and academic success. Children are capable and competent and will respond to the opportunity to be organised, an education expert says. “Organisational skills help children create order in their environment and the world, and they feel empowered to take on increasingly more complex tasks as they build on this foundational skill,” says Desiree Hugo, Head of Academics at ADvTECH Schools, a division of Africa’s leading private education provider. She says parents can progressively start introducing organizational skills into the everyday lives of their children by making it a fun and empowering experience. Essential to this introduction is ensuring your child has good role modelling, and this is easily done by parent and child preparing for the school day before bed time. Ensure school uniforms are prepared, school bags are packed, lunch boxes are ready to be filled and plans for collection from school are discussed. Involve your child in these preparations and give them the responsibility of participating in the organization of their day and space. Leave early in the morning to avoid traffic congestion, and prevent your child becoming anxious by late arrival. The impact of arriving late will be affect the child’s settling in and learning throughout the day. “Teaching, modelling and allowing the child autonomy to practice these essential skills have a significant and long-lasting impact on a child’s ability to succeed throughout their academic career; since these are essential life skills and they are the foundation to building a child’s ability to feel prepared, and ready to learn and engage in the classroom.

“Teachers can help students stay on track by following a general schedule each day. Maintaining structure in the classroom supports students to establish a schedule and remember what is expected of them. Structure in this second year of Covid is important, given that most children in South Africa still have a disrupted educational experience, so where possible, structure helps alleviate some of the impact of this disruption by providing a measure of certainty and predictability.”

“With the right encouragement and approach, children will gradually start to build organisational muscle, and be proud of their contribution within the home and at school.”

She says at home, chores such as cleaning up toys, putting away clothes and helping set or clear the table – or whichever recurring chores arise within the home environment - are good ways to teach children the methodical approach to following directions and focusing on a task.

The LEGO Foundation www.legofoundation.com and UNICEF www.unicef.org share useful elements of playful pedagogy and these online platforms offers playful learning ideas, materials and strategies for schools and families, these can support organisational thinking.

“Establishing an after-school routine for having lunch, planning their work timelines, and completing homework promptly is also helpful, not just academically, but it provides a sense of structure and achievement.”

“As academic demands start to grow, children may experience challenges setting priorities, making plans, sticking to a task and getting things done. These skills become increasingly important as your child moves through different grade levels. Many people think of organisational skills as the ability to keep things in order, but it is much more than that – it sets a child up for success and enjoyment of their learning journey.”

Hugo says that parents can help their child on their organisational journey by creating a nurturing environment conducive to learning and developing important foundational skills, but always believing in the competencies of their child.

Playful family time is essential and co-creating games are interactive. An exciting way to introduce new concepts – particularly to an otherwise reluctant child – is to turn it into a game, says Hugo.

WYNBERG BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL

Zachary Porthen Wynberg Boys’ High School Head Prefect Congratulations on being selected as a leader at your school. What are you looking forward to the most during your term as leader? I’m looking forward to the COVID restrictions being lifted so that we can start bringing back school traditions that have always worked, because during the past two years there were limitations on student activities. We also have a new Headmaster for 2022, and I believe this too will bring new opportunities, so I’m very excited for what lies ahead for the student leadership and myself.

1st Team Tennis

Music

Wynberg 1st Team Tennis finished off the first term on a high with a convincing win over local rivals SACS.

Jared Benn in Grade 11 entered his final piano graded examination (Grade 8) through Trinity College of Music, London at the end of 2021. As no examiners were sent out to South Africa from London to examine candidates in person, Jared had to make a recording of the material required for his examination and submit it on line. We are very proud of him for achieving his Grade 8 Piano with a mark of 93% which is a Distinction. Achieving this level of playing at the age of 16 is highly commendable and to pass with distinction even more so.

What are your strengths and weaknesses? I’m a proactive listener and am always considerate to others. I also make decisions based on my morals and integrity, but tend to sometimes take action before fully analyzing a situation.

Who is your role model? I don’t really have a specific role-model but value certain attributes of different people, such as the hard work and dedication of Christiano Ronaldo; the morals and integrity of Mahatma Gandhi and the creativity and innovation of Elon Musk.

Is there anything you would like to change at your school? I’d like to increase school participation among the boys and encourage them to be enthusiastic in all aspects of school-life.

Who is your Hollywood celeb crush?

What do you love the most about your school? I really love the school vibe and the importance of what it means to be a Wynberg man. The opportunities presented by our school allow boys to thrive in their personal interests. What will your message of encouragement be for your prefects/co-leaders? Supera Moras - to never give up and overcome difficulties, as our school motto states. The journey ahead is going to be full of challenges but if we stand united we can overcome and achieve our goals.

Chess

Wynberg Boys’ High sent three teams to the Grey College 19th Annual Schools Chess Tournament in Bloemfontein in February, with the A side producing their best results at the event to finish in second place overall.

I’ve always had a crush on Selena Gomez since watching her on Disney channel when I was younger. Pick one: Netball, rugby, cricket, or hockey? Rugby Cappuccino, hot chocolate, or tea? Cappuccino Braai with friends or takeaways? Braai with friends Binge watching series or a live music festival? Live music festival Android or iOS? iOS

Team and Coach,Mr Angus Innes.

Jared and his piano teacher Mr Richard Haigh, our Head of Music.

Water Polo

Wynberg’s second side took on first teams from across the Cape at the Oakhill Open Water Water Polo Festival in Knysna. Player in the estuary at the Waterfront, WBHS acquitted themselves exceptionally to finish in the last four.

The team and coaches Messrs Adolf Groenewald and Jason Pretorius.

Cricket The much-anticipated cricket league clash between WBHS and RBHS 1st XI’s saw Wynberg claiming a 23 run win over the hosts to claim unofficial bragging rights as the top cricket school in the Western Cape.

The team and coaches Messrs Pietie Loubser and Ryan Maron.
