Concert Band wins big at International Competition The Concert Band’s latest achievement not only makes the city of Gqeberha proud, but the country as well. At the start of May, the CGHS Concert Band entered into the ‘Classical International Youth Music Competition’ – based in Atlanta, USA. Due to COVID-19, the Concert Band was able to submit a recording which allowed them to compete in the Wind Band category of the competition. The competition drew entries from a total of 52 countries around the world. The Concert Band of 2021 was praised for their “fantastic performance” by international adjudicators and were awarded the GRAND PRIZE with a Perfect Score of 100% for their rendition of James Swearingen’s ‘Lead On, O King Eternal’. This has placed the Collegiate Girls’ High School Concert Band as the top wind band at the competition (and the only South African representative) and one of the top 3 ensembles

at the competition, alongside a String Orchestra from Cuba and a Baroque Ensemble from Poland. The school is extremely proud of the girls and of Mr G Snyman, the band director, for all that they have been able to achieve nationally and now, internationally during very testing times. For more information about the competition and the other countries that took part, feel free to visit the competition’s website at https:// www.internationalyouthmusiccompetitions. org/winne... or go to their Facebook page International Youth Music Competitions - IYMC. If you have still not watched the award-winning performance visit the school’s YouTube channel to subscribe and watch their performance at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=UNOT8fz1LT4 . #collegiateghs #concertband #windband

UNION PREPARATORY SCHOOL Transforming the learning experience at Union Preparatory School During May 2021, in what was a historical moment for Union Preparatory School in Graaff-Reinet, the school unveiled its new Learner Support Centre. Over the years, Union Preparatory School has gone from a predominantly English 1st home language school to one where English-speaking children now amount to only about a quarter of the learners, with the rest speaking either Afrikaans or isiXhosa – there are even some native French and Chinese-speaking children among the learners. Consisting of three beautiful educational spaces, the new Learner Support Centre, under the guidance of the school’s knowledgeable remedial educator Ms Valerie Lewack, will focus on linguistic, as well as remedial and auditory support, to enable learners to better grasp and comprehend the English language. This centre will enable

Union Preparatory School to break down language barriers by providing a learning environment that supports learning in a second language, thereby enhancing the learners’ academic progress and assisting with the integration of these learners into the school community – all this while fostering a positive attitude and respect for the other languages. Union Preparatory School would like to extend its grateful thanks to the sponsors of this project, Montego Pet Nutrition, for their kind and generous support of this initiative - thank you for your investment in our children. We would also like to convey our thanks to Mr Derek Light and the UHS Development Trust for their ongoing support of the Union Schools, contractor Mr Colin Warner, Union’s grounds manager Mr Donald Kingwill, the current school governing body

and its chairman Mr Dave Stern, the previous governing body and its chairman Mr Mark Hudson, principal Ms Belinda Botha, the school’s SMT and staff as well anyone else that might have contributed to this project in some way. A special word of thanks is also extended to Ms Nomandla Singeni from the Department of Education for supporting this initiative by committing to supply the school with an isiXhosa foundation phase educator position for the introduction of isiXhosa as a subject at the school. Lastly, Union Preparatory School would also like to thank optometrist, Mr Johan Minnaar, speech therapist and audiologist, Mrs Izienne van Jaarsveld, and the Foundation for Alcohol Related Research (FARR) for their commitment to supporting the centre.

Comrades Marathon Centenary Hope Challenge On 13 June 2021 two of our learners, Catherine van Aardt and Robert Orrock took part in the Comrades Marathon Centenary Hope Challenge. Similarly to 2020, the 2021 challenge was a virtual race. The candidates had to track the run with a GPS watch to record their times. The details were then sent to the officials. Robert Orrock took part in the 10km Junior Male (u/19) division and was victorious when he achieved first place with an impressive time of 33:39. Catherine van Aardt took part in the 5km Junior Female (u/19) division and ran a time of 22:07. She came in 6th place. We would like to congratulate both of these athletes on their commendable achievement. Thank you to Catherine’s dad for providing us with a video of Catherine in action.

DESMOND AYEH HOCKEY CA

FROM QUEEN’S COLLEGE What makes it special to play for Queen’s College Boys’ High School’s first team? To me it’s about putting on the jersey with pride, knowing that I am representing something bigger than myself, the Queen’s College family. Not just my team but the whole school and those who came before me. What would you consider the strong points of your team this year? Two things stand out for me when asked this. Firstly, our defence. It is so solid that the opposing team will truly need to come up with something special to break it down. Secondly, and the most important one, working for each other. There are no quitters present in my team and as the saying goes, it’s close to impossible to beat a team that never gives up. What motivates you to give your best on the field week after week? The people who have supported my dreams keep me going. I make it a priority to show them that believing in me was not a mistake and I am grateful for that.

Being victorious in 2019 against our rivals Selborne College, with a score line of 3-1; having 6 provincial players in that same year. Who is the joker of the team and why? Viwe Mtolo. He has a PhD for being a clown. He has a gift of making people laugh without trying at all. What is the most enjoyable time after a match? Sitting in the changing rooms after a very tough win and sharing our heroic moments of that game. Who was your matric hero in Gr 8/Gr9? Jonathan Russell. The first team hockey captain in 2018.

S’ HIGH SCHOOL

FROM QUEENSTOWN GIRL

What makes it special to play for Queenstown Girls’ High School’s first team? It gives me the opportunity to represent my school in something I love. The support we get from the school makes it so much more worth it. What would you consider the strong points of your team this year? We all get along really well, which makes us a solid unit during a match. We are all strong when we play as a team. What motivates you to give your best on the court week after week? I am very competitive and do love the feeling of winning. This is one of the main things that motivates me, but the overall love for the sport and adrenalin drives me forward.

Your team has been together for 5 years. What makes your team special? We have grown together and share very special memories. We are all completely different players with different strengths who complement each other beautifully on the turf.

Who is the joker in the team, and why? Luyolo, she has a way of turning any situation into something funny. She is overall a fun person to be around. What is the most enjoyable time after a match? When we do our cooling down stretches, we talk about all the funny moments that happened during the match. We do sometimes have a laugh over the umpire’s calls, or what the other team said, and more often the funny things we did during the match. We also always use that time to reflect on our mistakes and good things we did, our coach then uses that to fix or practice those specific areas in the following week’s practices. Who was your matric hero in Gr 8/Gr9? Carmen McEwen who played in the halves as well at the time.

Liyema Mshumpela (u.17) & Ashley van Heerden (u.16, also chosen for The Winter Games)

Squash Tyla-Mae Roux and Courtney Stone competed in the Tecnifibre Bloemfontein Squash Tournament u/19. Tyla-Mae Roux ranked 9th and Courtney Stone 19th. They were also invited to the Balwin Properties SA Schools Squash National Closed Tournament where Tyla-Mae Roux had to withdraw due to injury and Courtney Stone finished 12th.

What has been your team’s greatest achievement over the past 5 years? Winning the 2021 Spar Regional tournament has to be the greatest highlight as it is my last year competing in this tournament. Also the All Girls Festival in 2019, when we went to Paarl and competed against some of best schools in the country.
