The competition amongst the four schools has always been phenomenal and games have literally been fought until the bitter end starting from U10 (in our day) right through to 1st XV level. I was fortunate to play A-side and 1st XV right through my primary school years through to Matric and played against guys who we all knew and respected through cricket and rugby in particular. I ended up playing with a number of them in post-school years from the army (SADF WP with Francois Bonthuys, Freddie Green, Clark Ellis, and Dean Matthews), club rugby (Villagers with Beau Schoeman, Martin Versveld, and Adrian Marx), and in some cases provincial (with Beau Schoeman for Boland), and then higher (SA Colleges, again with Beau Schoeman). Many of the players we played against over the years have become friends for life, which is what sport is ultimately all about.

A comment made by Ray Connellan about our opposition reads as follows: “In spite of the closeness of the games and the keen tension, I cannot think of one unpleasant incident during or after any of these games. Long may this state of affairs exist.”

MontgomeryPercy

Unfortunately, this was not the case with one of our brother schools in the Boland, and fixtures were stopped for a period due to an unpleasant incident. I am pleased to say that those wounds were healed many years ago.

WBHS Matric 1977: Deputy Head Prefect & 1st XV Rugby Current Headmaster of Maritzburg College

A number of the 1977 1st XV enjoyed their rugby so much that they decided to have another year in the team and stayed back to be part of a very successful 1978 side which beat Grey College, amongst their successes. These fortunate lads were Cliff van Eden, Dean Jankielsohn, Pierre Thackwray, John Edgar, Joe Erasmus, and Pierre Cilliers. On a personal level, only having had one year in the 1st XV and being young, I also asked to stay back, but was told politely by Headmaster Mr Neville Blackbeard to move Havingon!taught at seven other schools (three overseas, one of which played against Wynberg), apart from teaching and coaching at Wynberg Junior and High, I can say the following about Wynberg rugby. Wynberg is traditionally highly respected as a physically hard and uncompromising team that plays to the bitter end. Since being at Maritzburg College, I can attest to that as well, having been on the receiving end.

WYNBERGSACS

In Ray Connellan’s words: “The never say die attitude of Wynberg teams.”

BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL

In 1977 we lost the first game against SACS (with Peter Jordaan, one of the Jordaan brothers, and Stuart Salkow 10 - 21), in very much of a beginning-of- season performance at SACS, but we managed to beat them in the return game at Wynberg (17 - 10) after our very successful tour to East London and Natal. We lost narrowly to Bishops (13 - 19) largely to a ridiculous number of scrum penalties against our scrum (fact according to the actual report - 10 on our put in) by legendary ref Alan Hirschberg, but had success in the return game beating them at Wynberg 9 - 7. game at home, we were leading most of the game until the dying seconds when Brent Farrel, the blitz fast winger, scored in the corner and were desperately unlucky to lose. Needless to say, our coach Ray Connellan, was not impressed.

OLDFAMOUSBOYS

All four of the ‘quadrangular’ schools have, for many years, been blessed to be coached by school legends such as Basil Bey, Gus Enderstein, Ray Connellan, Peter Broster, Eric Tasker, Tinkie Heyns, Cecil Moss, Dave de Kock, and the newer legends in the making - many of whom were, in some instances, years ahead of their time.

I also had the pleasure of having played in all those games against some extremely talented and gifted players namely Adrian Kuiper, Richie Ryall, Martin Versveld (Bishops), Francois Bonthuys (captain of an unbeaten Rondebosch team, I believe), Beau Schoeman, Greg Morse, Freddie Green, and with Wynberg’s own Bobby Symmonds (captain) in his third year in the 1st XV and Craven Week player, and Pierre Thackeray - Craven Week and SA Schools.

It’s also a time when our Old Boys come out in force to support our teams, relive past encounters, and gather for the annual Wynberg Old Boys’ Dinner on the evening of the rugby clash - long may the healthy and keen rivalry between our two great schools, and our passionate Old Boys, continue to flourish!

It is a great pleasure for us at SACS to host our long standing traditional rivals Wynberg Boys High School today. We extend a warm welcome to visiting Headmaster Mr Deon Scheepers as well as his staff, coaches, boys and parents. Our gracious thanks go out to FNB for their kind sponsorship of this Classic Clash event. I am sure it will be a day of keen rivalry with excellent rugby played. It is a wonderful occasion to take on SACS for the final fixture of the annual double header this year. This fixture serves annually as the sporting highlight to conclude Wynberg’s Heritage Week in which we celebrate our founders, and the growth and development of our school since its beginning in Glebe Cottage in 1841. According to historians, rugby football has been played at both Wynberg and SACS since the 19th century whilst hockey only started as an official winter sport at Wynberg in 1968. In the early days, matches between the two schools were only played once a year but from 1966 there has been a double fixture each year on a home and away basis. As our two schools are the oldest traditional boys’ schools in the country, similar in ethos, and close neighbours, the games are always very hard and intense. This year will be no exception, and both school communities will be looking forward to closely contested games, good sportsmanship, and a strengthening of the relationship which has been in existence for so long.

Sifiso Mpanza first team captain

What can the school and parents expect from your team this year at Interschools? The boys will empty the tank for the last fixture of the season. They will give 100% passion and commitment to make them proud. Where is your strength as a team? Our scrum has been very good this year and our defense has been tenacious at times. We have always given our more fancied opponents a tough, physical game. What is the most difficult part of coaching a school team? Getting a different group of boys every year and having to start from scratch to build a team. Here in the Western Cape, the fixture list is also relentless, so keeping your best players on the field every week and remaining competitive is tough.

Wynberg Boys’ High SchoolSACS

What is the highlight of your team’s rugby season this year? Away wins against Grey High School, and the triple over Bishops, Rondebosch & SACS in the first half of the season. But also the standard of rugby that we produced in beating Boland Landbou and Bishops. How do you motivate your team? We’re very fortunate to have a family mindset where self-motivation for the good of all means the team builds itself toward every match. Who is your vice-captain and how does he support you? Our team is normally captained by As’ad Moos and Zack Porthen who are away at the moment playing for SA Schools. I am standing in for them in their absence. Are you happy with your team’s line up for the match against SACS? Do you have any injuries in your side? No injuries, but we are missing our two “Springboks” who are playing for SA Schools against England and France What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make you proud? We have had a fantastic season and would just like to finish on a high by beating SACS and playing great rugby at the same time. What are your plans for the future? I want to be a pro rugby player. What is the highlight of your team’s rugby season this year? Beating Bishops on the Piley Rees after 7 years of losses. How do you motivate your team? I usually motivate my team by finding our personal reasons and a reason as a team. Who is your vice-captain and how does he support you? Zetio Vilandy is our vice-captain. Whenever I need help, he is there and whenever the team needs an extra edge after our motivation, he brings it. Are you happy with your team’s line-up for the match against Wynberg? Do you have any injuries in your team? I’m more than happy, we just have one concussion to our outside centre, Daniel Dayaram. What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make you proud? Making our coaches and school proud and beating Wynberg on our home patch. I’m already immensely proud of my team and them putting a great shift in every week, makes me very proud. What are your plans for the future? To study and hopefully sign a professional contract with a possibility of going abroad.

Why in your opinion, does school rugby get more competitive each year? The passion for rugby in this country is huge and Old Boys seemingly judge their alma mater’s solely on the performance of the 1st rugby team. Full time, professional coaches whose jobs rely on them obtaining rugby results, is probably the main issue though.

What can the school and parents expect from your teams this year at the SACS derby? The boys will empty the tank for the last fixture of the season. They will give 100% passion and commitment to make them proud and hopefully play some outstanding rugby again.

What is the most difficult part of coaching a school team? Building a winning team culture where every player is given the space for personal growth within a staying fresh, and providing opportunities and support beyond the fields and classrooms. Why in your opinion, does school rugby get more competitive each year? Rugby is generally perceived as the premier SA Boys’ School sport, and with that status there’s an ongoing rivalry between all schools across all leagues to lead the pack in the public eye for prestige and bragging rights. With professional rugby a tempting and lucrative career option for talented players immediately after completing their schooling, and massive social and traditional media focus on success and achievement the game at school level was inevitably going to become a mirror of franchise competitions.

COACHES & CAPTAINS INTERVIEW 1ST TEAM CAPTAIN INTERVIEWS

Where is your strength as a 1st team? We have very few weak areas in our team, all the players have contributed and bought into the game plan. Defensively we are very organised and don’t easily allow our opponents to score tries. Our attacking game has also developed this year and we have played some really good rugby with a good mix of back and forward play.
