HEADMISTRESS’ MESSAGE

Eunice’s long-standing tradition of excellence is the result of staff, learners and parents collectively supporting, upholding and contributing to the myriad of activities and opportunities offered at our multifaceted school. This commitment to the realization of every learner’s potential – be it in the classroom, on the sports field or on the stage – has ensured that Eunice, true to her name, is a place of “happy victory”.

As the Top school in Mathematics and Physical Science in the Free State (for the 12th time in 14 years), we have undoubtedly experienced “happy victory” in the field of academics. We also obtained honours in the Free State for the following subjects: Mathematical Literacy, Accounting, Afrikaans 1st Additional language, Consumer Studies, Computer Applications Technology and History. This, however, is but one avenue where Eunice learners have had the opportunity to shine. The most recent production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in Eunice’s theatre provided yet another avenue for learners to shine as they shared their talents and lived out their dreams on stage. On the sports field, the performances of our athletes have been just as brilliant, attesting to the diversity and dedication of all our stars. But Eunice isn’t only about attaining victories; it is also about giving and sharing, and the recent academic outreach projects afforded

Eunice learners the opportunity of sharing their knowledge and passion for their subjects with fellow learners from visiting schools. Not only is it a privilege for me to be at the helm of such all-round “happy victory”, it is also an honour for me to lead a school that is synonymous with high expectations, multi-talented diversity and all-round excellence. Our victories are anchored in the echo of our founding ideals: “That our daughters may be like cornerstones,

polished after the similitude of a palace”. And as 2015 marks Eunice’s 140th celebration of excellence, we invite you to come and experience the Eunice echo. That echo is a resounding reminder to be true to our motto: Vincit qui se vincit/She conquers who conquers herself – for it is only in conquering oneself that one can conquer all things. Crazy about calamari

By Jenny Morris

Calamari makes my mouth very happy. My first introduction to this delicacy occurred in the home of a childhood friend whose Greek parents prepared it for us. I’m glad I never got to see it in its raw state then, as all the ink might have put young me off and I would never have known how great calamari could be. SUMMER SQUID Serves 4-5 • 500g Breco Squid Tubes sliced into paper-thin tubes • Flour for dusting • Salt to taste • Cayenne pepper (optional) • Oil for frying

Follow Jenny @jennymorrischef

Season the flour with a little salt and cayenne pepper, and dust the calamari tubes with the flour. Heat some oil in a frying pan and fry the calamari in small batches until just-cooked. Stir the calamari into the salad ingredients (see below). Serving suggestion Why not make a summer squid salad? For this, you will need: • ½ cup very thinly sliced fennel bulb • 2 tbsp. finely chopped fennel fronds (leaves) • 2 tsp. lemon zest • 1 tbsp. chopped dill • 3 tbsp. chopped fresh parsley • 1 red pepper, diced • 1 red chilli, finely chopped • 2 long ribs of celery, thinly sliced • 2 tbsp. chopped capers • 2 cloves crushed garlic • ½ cup lemon juice • ¾ cup olive oil • Salt and pepper to taste Mix all the ingredients together and add the calamari. Let the salad rest for 30 minutes before serving.

MAKE A STATEMENT! Easy peasy trend tips

STYLING TIP #1 For a boho chic look, go for different chains and crystals. Necklaces can be small pieces worn together and don’t necessarily have to be big to make a statement.

Statement necklaces are a huge trend now, and they’re an easy way to add some flair to your basic wardrobe. A statement piece is, of course, the best way to take an outfit from boring to bold. Even though most people think that statement necklaces are too fancy, these items can be worn with any outfit if paired properly. When it comes to wearing statement pieces, it’s all about incorporating them into your own style and matching them to your personality and lifestyle.

TECH

Samsung Galaxy S6 Every release in the Samsung S series has been highly anticipated, and it’s been no different in the run-up to the release of the Galaxy S6. In fact, the S6 may be more deserving of attention than any of its predecessors, as the phone is sure to shake up our expectations of the Galaxy S series. From a flexible display and metal casing to an octa-core processor, rumours and speculation have been flying around the internet. Some rumours are, of course, more likely to prove true than others, but everything seems to be pointing to big upgrades and a smartphone deserving of the hype. Here are some things to expect from the Samsung Galaxy S6 in terms of design, features, price, release date and specifications: GET READY FOR AN UPDATED DESIGN. Expect the S6 to have a more durable case, possibly made of aluminium or grapheme. Smartphones – and their screens – have been getting bigger. This is one trend that doesn’t look to be at an end, so expect the S6 to feature a 5.1’’ screen. The biggest upgrades will probably be seen in the processor and camera, and the phone’s display and durability. Expect the S6 to have a 20MP rear camera and 4-7 front camera. Consumers want their phone batteries to last longer, and as Samsung have done well in this regard, it’s not unreasonable to expect them to keep improving.

EXPECTED PRICE Samsung smartphones have always been at the higher end of the pricing spectrum, and we don’t expect this one to be any different. In fact, the S6 is likely to be a little more expensive than previous phones in the S series. You’ll probably be looking at approximately R8 925. EXPECTED RELEASE DATE The S6’s official release date is not expected to be announced until the MWC 2015 at the beginning of March. As the S5’s release date was in April 2014, it seems likely that the next in the series will have a release date in April this year. HERE ARE SOME EXPECTED

PROFILE

JEAN DE VILLIERS: ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY

9

With little over eight months left before the start of one of the world’s most anticipated sporting events, the Rugby World Cup, South Africans are waiting with bated breath to see whether national rugby captain Jean de Villiers will be fit enough to play after he sustained a serious knee injury against Wales last year. Two months ago, De Villiers underwent a full reconstruction of the anterior and posterior cruciate knee ligaments with an artificial graft, as well as a repair of the medial collateral knee ligament. In simple terms, he had a full knee reconstruction. According to dr Jacques Snyman, this is fairly serious surgery that could be expected to put the rugby player out of commission for

approximately eight months. De Villiers noted that he is very fortunate to have supportive infrastructures at both the Springboks and the Stormers to help him recover from injuries and perform at optimal levels. “In this case, I still needed surgery to repair the damage to my knee, and it really helped knowing I had a

supportive and understanding medical scheme in my corner.” “Recovery after major knee surgery is a slow and careful process requiring input from the orthopaedic surgeon, physical therapist, chiropractor, and trainer who know your abilities and can advise you accordingly,” he explained. Dr Snyman explains the usual stages of recovery one may expect after major knee surgery: Post-surgery After serious knee surgery, your orthopaedic surgeon will usually evaluate any swelling and pain, your muscle activation patterns, and the range of motion of your knee (as well as that of your hip, ankle and lumbar spine). Every joint should function properly so that there is no added stress placed on the knee. The first two weeks Decreasing the swelling and reaching full passive range of motion is very important in the first few weeks after surgery. Treatment options and programmes may include icing the area regularly and

working the range of motion between icing sessions. Adhering to these programmes is crucial to recovery. Start doing weight-bearing exercises Once you have achieved a full range of motion, you can start doing supervised weight-bearing exercises, which may include squats and lunges to strengthen the knee and ligaments. “Having knee surgery is most certainly a humbling experience that teaches you not to take your health for granted,” said De Villiers. “My body is pivotal to my career, but injuries do happen – especially in a sport like rugby. Injuries are part of life; you just have to accept them, listen to your doctor and medical specialists, and work hard to recover. “At this stage, it’s difficult to determine how long I’ll be out of action. In all likelihood, it will be for about eight months, but I am doing everything I can to fast-track my recovery. I am also trying to keep fit by doing some lowintensity cycling and swimming. “The time-out has also given me the perfect opportunity to bond with my baby, Luka, the newest addition to our family.

GREY COLLEGE REPRESENTS SOUTH AFRICA AT ISF TENNIS WORLD SCHOOLS CHAMPS: Grey College was invited by Tennis South Africa, as top boy’s tennis school in SA, to represent SA at the 2015 ISF Tennis World Schools Championships that took place from 8 – 15 March in Doha, Qatar. The team, along with coach, Mr Gustav Fichardt, and Head of Grey College Tennis, Mr Naresh Mahabeer, left with high expectations to Doha. The boys were in Group C, alongside the teams from Turkey, who finally won the bronze medal at the championship, France and China. The Grey boys took on France on day 1, but unfortunately lost 4-2 to the French boys. On day 2 they could not beat the team from Turkey, and lost 5-1. On day 4 the boys redeemed themselves by beating China 5-1, and finally ended 3rd in Group C. In the play offs for positions 9-16, Grey College came up against Brazil and won the set with a great 6-0. The winning streak did not stop

there, and the boys beat the hosts, Qatar, 4-2. Finally, Grey College went through to the final of the back draw and took on Thailand, playing for position 9 and 10. Grey College beat this team with a convincing 6-0, to take 9th place. Along with being crowned 9th best tennis team in the world, team South Africa received the “Fair Play” Award, as voted for by all the teams in the tournament. Mr Naresh Mahabeer said that it was “an honor and a privilege for the Grey boys” to have been part of such a great tournament, and said that the boys are thankful for the opportunity, not just to be able to play the sport they love against some of the best tennis teams in the world, but also for the opportunity to learn more about different cultures and make friends who share their passion for tennis.

They played well, but missed out on the final and therefore, claimed the unofficial third spot. An exceptional individual performance by Wihan Victor, who scored 1000 runs so far this season. This included TWO centuries (St Charles and Hilton).

FOR OUR GAMERS

THE TOP SIX PSP GAMES

DAXTER The chattier, shorter partner of the Jak & Daxter games gets the spotlight on a platform that’s just his size. A Good Match for: Looney Tunes buffs. Jak’s sidekick shares the insecure bluster of Daffy Duck and is animated with such detail and charm that he could be related to Bugs bunny

CHAINS OF OLYMPUS Chains of Olympus translates the series’ signature combat flair and mythological scale to the handheld, raising the stakes of what was possible on the PSP. A Good Match for: Riders of public transportation. Chances are, your daily commute offers plenty of opportunities to get good and worked up. Thankfully, this title lets you take out your anger on the monsters of Greco-Roman myth, not fellow passengers.

HALF MINUTE A Good Match for: Efficiency experts. Not only does this quirky Atlus title provide an extra-lean cut of RPG in the Hero 30 mode, it also riffs on other genres, too. You can get your concentrated side-scrolling shooter fix in Princess 30 or do eyeblink-quick RTS planning in Evil Lord 30.2

EVERY EXTEND Focused on experience, pushing you to detonate ever bigger explosion sequences to get higher scores, ranks and levels. A Good Match for: People who like to push themselves. Peppered with items to ramp up the speed and difficulty, this title’s levels are actually dynamic, ever-mutating puzzles that demand patience.

EVERYDAY SHOOTER One minute, you’re shooting amoebic shapes in what looks like a neural network, the next you’re blasting back robot hordes in a trippy mech nightmare. A Good Match for: Abstract art enthusiasts. Everyday Shooter splashes hues and shapes across the screen and brings them to life in surprisingly creepy and breathtaking ways.

LUMINES This puzzle game’s predecessor singlehandedly justified the existence of the PlayStation Portable. Lumines 2 adds glorious sound-and-color syncopation to Tetris’ fallingblock formula against the backdrop of a killer soundtrack.
