EUNICE TOASTS 140 YEARS WITH GREAT FESTIVITY
From the 8th to the 10th of May Eunice enjoyed its 140th birthday with grand celebrations. The events started on the Friday with a special birthday assembly in the Primary School hall, where Eunice old girls shared their happy memories of Eunice and wished Eunice a happy birthday. A modern cocktail party was held in the Adele de Jager Hall on the same evening. Eunice old girls from all over the country, as well as staff, were invited to travel back in time and once

again rejoice in each other’s company on Saturday evening. The scrumptious three-course dinner, lavish decor and delightful atmosphere made the banquet one to remember. A top class musical service was held in the Odeion at the University of the Free State on Sunday morning. Eunice’s own internationally acclaimed high school choir as well as the primary school choirs touched the hearts of all the attendees and ended the celebratory weekend on a high note!

EUNICE SQUASH STARS – THE LOUW SISTERS IZANÉ AND CHRIZANNE
Izané (gr. 9) and Chrizanne Louw (gr. 8) are sister in Eunice Girls High School with a bright future in squash. They started playing squash at a young age and received coaching since they were in grade 4. These sister are respectively ranked first in the Free State in the u/16 and u/14 age groups. Both play for Eunice’s 1st team which placed 3rd at the recent National All Girls’ School Festival held in Bloemfontein. Izané has recently been selected for the SA School’s Squash Team which departs for Malaysia and Hong Kong at the end of May, to participate in an international
tournament. During the SA School’s Squash Tournament at the Parkview Squash Centre in March this year, Izané ended 3rd in the u/16 section and Chrizanne 5th in the u/14 section. Chrizanne, however, recently beat the top player in this tournament in her age group during the FS Closed Squash Tournament. They are multi-talented ladies who also play hockey for Eunice’s u/16 A and u/14 A teams and are placed in the Top 20 academically in their grades. Their success on and off the squash court pays tribute to their committed and dedicated approach to whatever they do!

Georgiou Schaeffer was selected to represent South Africa in the Junior African
Championships in Algeria in March. He was ranked third for the Cadet (U/17) Epee and obtained a silver medal. He also competed in the World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in the April school holidays and gained valuable experience. Schaeffer is presently ranked no. 2 in South Africa in his age group and is working towards competing in the Junior and Cadet Commonwealth Games in Cape Town in July 2015.

Mushroom chicken stir fry

Serves 4
INGREDIENTS: • 20ml peanut or vegetable oil • 6 deboned skinless chicken thighs cut into bite-sized pieces. • 3 Tbls corn flour • ½ tsp ground white pepper • ½ tsp salt • 1 tsp ground cumin • 6 spring onions with tops, roughly chopped • 300g Oyster or Shimeji mushrooms • 3cm fresh ginger, cut into very thin matchsticks • 3 cloves crushed garlic • 1 red chili, thinly sliced • 2 tbls soy sauce • ½ cup Wellington’s tomato sauce • 1 Tbls runny honey • Freshly chopped coriander • 150ml Veg or chicken stock

METHOD: Place the chicken into a glass bowl with the corn flour, white pepper, salt and cumin – mix together to coat. Heat the oil in a large wok or frying pan and stir fry the chicken in two batches for 3 minutes. Now return the chicken to the wok and add the mushrooms and spring onions, ginger, garlic and chili. Cook for 1 minute, stirring; add the soy sauce and tomato sauce, stir well to combine. Add honey and stock and cook the chicken till done, about another 10 minutes, stir in the coriander and serve with steamed rice or veggie noodles.

WE CELEBRATE IN STYLE AT CBC. A PLAY TO REMEMBER! This year St. Joseph’s College CBC is celebrating its 75th Anniversary. To celebrate this auspicious occasion, we staged a play to portray the uniqueness and the character of our school. The Junior School learners from Grade one to Grade six paid tribute to the founder of CBC schools, Edmund Rice. The learners (who know the history of Edmund Rice) enthusiastically and convincingly acted out his true character
of generosity and kindness. The audience was touched by the moving tribute. The High School learners celebrated our achievements academically and on the sports field. They enjoyed showing off these achievements through acting, dancing and singing. Through this concert, we were able to show our appreciation to all involved in making our school such a fine institution as well as to embrace the ethos of our school with humility.

Enkele hoogtepunte uit die netbal wat ons 2014 behaal is: • 19 spanne neem deel aan die ligas • 19 spanne dring deur na die semi-finale rondtes • 19 spanne dring deur na die finale rondtes • 8 spanne wen hulle ligas • 18 speelsters verteenwoordig die Vrystaat Cheetahspan • 0.16 A-span, 0.17 A- en 0.19 A- span wen die Vrystaatbeker • 0.19A-span eindig vierde tydens die Wildeklawer Super Skoletoernooi • 2 speelsters by die 0.18 Suid – Afrikaanse kampioenskappe onder die Top 35 groep aangewys In 2014 was dit die agtste opeenvolgende jaar wat dié span die Vrystaatbeker gewen het.
Enkele hoogtepunte tot op hede in 2015 behaal : Waterkloof Netbalfees Die Hoërskool Sentraal se eerste netbalspan het vroeg in die seisoen reeds sy staal gewys. Sentraal het by die Waterkloof Netbalfees nie een van sy 11 wedstryde verloor nieHulle was die enigste onoorwonne span, na 15 wedstryde. Wildeklawer-Toernooi: Die Hoërskool Sentraal het die tweede plek behaal tydens hierdie toernooi. Liga-wedstryde: 2015 Die Hoërskool Sentraal het Oranje Meisieskool geklop, met ‘n telling van 35-22. Jim Fouché moes ook die aftog blaas teen Sentraal, (45-13) tydens die afgelope naweek se FNB Classic Clahs. Teen Hoërskool Fichardtpark wen die Tralies 43-9. Ook teen Eunice was ons met 56-7 aan die wenkant. Hoërskool Sentraal Netbal – Die tradisie duur voort!

Tydens die kroningsaand van Mnr en Mej Steyner was ons weereens verstom oor hoeveel talent en skoonheid hier in ons midde is. Die leerders het in gemaklike klere asook aanddrag op die loopplank verskyn en moes ‘n verskeidenheid vrae antwoord. Selfs die onder hulle wat maar sku is vir die kollig het die senuwees agter die gordyn gelaat en die gehoor betower. Die beoordelaars het geswoeg en gesweet om tot ‘n besluit te kom maar einde laaste is Fanie Griesel en Ilona Pretorius as onderskeidelik mnr en mej Steyner aangekondig. Baie geluk!!
1STE NETBALSPAN
Die 1ste netbalspan onderleiding van juffrou Nellie Richter het sovêr ‘n goeie seisoen agter die rug. Juffrou Nellie is 21 jaar by President Steyn en vir die laaste 14 jaar is sy die afrigter. Hier is die uitslae van hul wedstryde vir die seisoen:
EKOSKOOL
Ekoskool is ‘n skool gebaseerde omgewingsbewusmaking en volhoubare ontwikkelings onderwysprogram wat in meer as 52 lande geïmplimenteer is. Dit is ‘n internationale program van die Foundation of Enviromental Education. Daar is huidiglik meer as 1100 skole in SA wat deel van die program is. Die ekoskool program dra by tot die verbetering van omgewingsbestuur by die skool. Ekoskool SA toekennings sisteem laat skole
toe om aksie projekte te ontwikkel en leerprogramme aan te bied wat oor 5 jaar periode aangewend en verbeter word. Die skole word jaarliks geevalueer en skole wat voldoen aan al die vereistes word dan beloon met medaljes en na 3 jaar ‘n “Groen vlag”. As ‘n skool 5 jaar lank voldoen het aan al die vereistes en projekte volhoubaar aangewend het ontvang hulle ‘n groot internationale vlag.

Tydens vanjaar se o/12 en o/13 Vrystaat Rugbyproewe is die volgende leerders van Sand du Plessis Primêr deur na die volgende rondte: William Meyer, Chris Carelse, Steven Matthysen, Kabelo Mashale, Lemo Leballo, Behan Vermaak en Brian Matsietseng. Lemo Leballo en Kabelo Mashale het as deel van die Vrystaat Ontwikkelingspan deelgeneem aan die toernooi wat plaasgevind het in Bloemfontein, gedurende die laaste week van die eerste kwartaal.
