AWSUMCelebrity Interview
In my opinie is Du Toit die volledige rugbyspeler.”
A: Die nederlaag teen Japan was ‘n groot teleurstelling. Enigiets minder as dit is ‘n gefaalde missie.

Ons is ‘n baie gehegte gesin en my gesin is my rots. V: Wat is jou toekomsdrome vir jou loobpaan? A: Ons was beste vriende op skool.

BOMBED OUT Floral bombers or embroidered souvenir jackets will be spilling out of your fave stores from this week! Bomber jackets have simply taken over the world. But now there’s a new version to lust after ---the souvenir embroidered satin jacket that you’ll want so badly. This jackets has a history. After WW2 ended, an American GI stationed in occupied Japan, had the light bulb idea to have his regulation bomber jacket embroidered with eagles, tigers and flowers, transforming a symbol of war time combat clothing into a peace time souvenir. They were so popular that Japanese tailors created these former flight jackets from leftover parachute silk and satin fabrics. They are full of messages of war and peace so they come with an extra kick. Yet they are simply stunning and are now the biggest street wear of choice for guys and girls. Kimye latched onto it and now the souvenir bomber jacket has gone viral. Get yours fast!

Health & Wellbeing Is a summer cough normal? When one thinks of summer, the first thing that comes to mind is days in sun or in the pool, not a persistent cough.
When the sun’s out and the temperature soars, most reach for sunscreen, not cough syrup. The truth is, coughs aren’t exclusive to winter – they’re prevalent in summer too. In summer, the chances of respiratory allergies and infections increase, which can trigger a sore throat and dry cough – and breathing is naturally affected because of congestion. People get caught off-guard by an outof-season cough, however, and if not treated properly it can worsen into a bacterial infection. The difference between summer and winter coughs is the way we respond to them. In winter, we’re more likely to stay under the covers and rest. In summer, our busy schedules and longer days make it less likely we’ll take it easy and recover.
Prevention is better than cure The prevalence of microscopic insects called dust mites increases in summer. They thrive in warm, humid temperatures and nest in beds, fabric and carpets. Their residue can get into the air and trigger allergies that lead to a cold and cough. If you’re chesty in summer, clean bookshelves, corners and other places dust collects. Wash bedding and rugs in hot water to get rid of dust mites and other possible allergens. Keep humidity in the house between 30% and 50% so dust mites don’t thrive by keeping your doors and windows closed and running an air-conditioner or air purifier. If you suffer from asthma or sinusitis, there’s a strong chance the season may surprise you with a cough. Outdoor allergens, such as pollen from grass, trees and weeds, and irritants in the air, such as smoke, air pollution and odours, may lead to a summer cough. Hay fever sufferers planning a summer getaway may want to check pollen levels at their destination before finalising an itinerary, as they could experience an uncomfortable cough while on holiday.
The healing process Having a persistent cough can be exhausting. Coughing can disrupt sleep and cause a variety of problems, including headaches, dizziness, excessive sweating and, in extreme cases, fractured ribs. Summer coughs can be especially annoying, as they get in the way of holidays and outdoor activities. To conquer a cough quickly and get back to what summer’s really about – fun in the sun – drink plenty of fluids and rest properly. This prevents dehydration, maintains fluids and eases a sore throat. Eating fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins and nutrients will also help boost your body’s immune system. If the cough persists, visit a doctor. Cough syrups can also help alleviate the symptoms of a summer cough – if you choose the right one. Always consult a doctor or pharmacist for a recommendation of the best possible medication to use. Ingredients in many over-the-counter syrups can cause uncomfortable and harmful side effects, so it’s important to use the safest possible cough syrup that contains no harmful ingredients and is safe and effective for the whole family – the best way to beat a summer cough. Matrics Class of 2017
Play the long game to ace your finals Grade 12s who are serious about giving their final exams the best shot now have the most valuable weapon in their arsenal – time – and should use it to their advantage. Later in the year, Matrics will get plenty of advice about how to best prepare for their exams, but for the most part this advice will focus on last-minute measures. The best way to walk confidently into the exam room, however, is to make sure that you don’t just study over the next few months, but that you actually use the time to prepare. Although there is a gigantic difference between studying, which mostly consists of cramming facts into one’s head, and properly preparing, which takes time and strategy, many people are not aware of the distinction between the two. True preparation for an examination requires you to understand concepts in such a way that you are able to engage with them at higher levels. You should be able to apply them, analyse them, evaluate them, and create by using them. The bottom line is that you need to practise, and this often means putting pen to paper, which allows you to reflect on your knowledge and engrain your learning into your long-term memory. When studying, you need to make sure that you have not just committed the ideas and facts to memory, but that you understand how they are linked to other concepts and ideas. Parrot-fashion memorising of lists is not going to cut it when studying for your finals. There are two very effective ways of creating ‘networks of meaning’ when studying: 1 Creating Powerpoint presentations of the work Note down the keywords associated with the idea. After reading through and summarising the content, go through the presentation and talk yourself through it, using the key words as impetus for your talk. If you are working in a study group, a variation on this could be for one person to ‘teach’ the others using this presentation of key words. For example, key words about photosynthesis at a Matric level could be: • Chlorophyll • Stroma • 6CO2 + 6H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2 • Light reactions • Dark reactions True learning takes place not only at the stage of summarising the information, but also when delivering the presentation.
2 Creating visual maps Visual maps allow you to record the structure of the knowledge, whether it is in a cycle, flowchart, hierarchical tree diagram, or Venn diagram. The choice of visual map is determined by the nature of the content. By mapping the knowledge visually, you create ‘cues’ of keywords (which are much easier to recall than long, complex facts), as well as networks of meaning (what connects with what?), enabling you to engage more meaningfully with the higher-order questions in the exam. Taking the time to develop your learning over several months in this manner will allow you to master your work to a degree that will be virtually impossible to replicate if your usual approach is to study only in the weeks leading up to the exam. In addition, taking the long-game approach will be significantly more rewarding, as well as take an immense amount of stress off your shoulders, which will leave you more relaxed and able to deal with all the other pressures you will face this year, not to mention the pressure of walking into an intimidating exam room. The ability to understand conceptually is what sets the distinctive student apart from the average one. By endeavouring to understand conceptually, instead of like a parrot, you will stand yourself in good stead when it comes to those tougher questions on the examination paper. PRIMÊRE SKOOL WILLEM POSTMA (t) 051 436 2730/1 (e) pthysn@wpps.co.za Omgeeprojek (skoene) By Willem Postma doen ons verskillende waardes.

ST ANDREW’S SCHOOL
(t) 051-444 1612 (e) oba@sasb.co.za
Saint Andrew’s T20 finals For the first time since 2013, Saint Andrew’s will represent the Knights’ region at the National Finals of the Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge in Stellenbosch from 24 to 26 March. Coach Gregg Hobson believes this year’s team is a more complete side than the one of four years ago, which defeated the eventual champions, Rondebosch. “In the last team we took to the finals, we relied quite heavily on our bowling, particularly our spinners, as seems to be the norm at Saints. We didn’t have a quick bowler like Gerald Coetzee and our batting wasn’t as strong as it is this year. “We relied heavily on two or three batsmen, some of them were young, so we found ourselves having to defend low scores. This season if we play well we are more capable of getting big scores because we have depth in batting, more guys that can hit the ball.” Saints qualified for the National Finals at a canter, dispatching Goudveld, who had seen off Grey College, by 121 runs in the Free State final, and then crushing Noord Kaap by 146 runs in the Knights’ final behind 115 from Garnett Tarr and 5 for 6 from
Gerald Coetzee. Against Noord-Kaap, it was the first time this season that Coetzee had bowled at full speed and it made a huge impression as the SA Colts’ fast bowler bowled four of his five victims. “Since his injury [at the end of 2016], he has maybe been a little bit hesitant to really bowl at full pace, but in the final against Noord Kaap he did bowl at full pace, which should be good for his confidence,” Hobson said. Having Coetzee, who has been measured at over 140 km/h, at full pace makes a big difference to the Saints’ team, he added: “It’s massive. It just creates so much intensity, because when he bowls like that he invariably gets one or two wickets as well, which means the whole intensity and vibe in the field is completely different. The other thing is the opposition batsmen are sometimes intimidated.” Spin, though, will be key in Stellenbosch, Hobson said, and the team’s experience from the Saint John’s College Rams T20 Festival in Harare, where spin also was key, should help his side.
Getting off to good starts played a huge role in Saints’ success in the recent provincial and regional finals and that, too, will go a long way towards determining the team’s results. Hobson said: “That’s why the start is so important, so that all the guys coming in later on can play with freedom. If we do get into trouble, we have guys who can get us out of trouble. We have guys who can bat all the way down. Even number nine and 10 are boundary hitters, which is nice to have.” The completion of the Lindsay Tuckett High Performance Centre, called the best schoolboy cricket centre in the world by Pitchvision, has played a big role in helping his players prepare for their trip to Stellenbosch, he continued. Making a winning start at the National Finals is important and Hobson is confident he has a complete team which, if it plays to its potential, could challenge for the national title. Saint Andrew’s have been drawn in a pool with Titans’ champions, Centurion, Dolphins’ winners, Glenwood, and southern focus school, Hudson Park.
The Saint Andrew’s 1st XI put in plenty of time in the school’s Lindsay Tuckett High Performance Centre in preparation for the National Finals of the Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge in Stellenbosch. The centre has been called “the best schoolboy indoor centre in the world” by Pitchvision, the worldwide leaders in cricket technology. AWSUM NEWS MARCH 2017
