Q What are your future career dreams? What is the one thing you would really like to achieve?

A I want to take it as far as I can, and that being the rest of the world. I would really just love to be able to put on really good shows all over the world, and allow people to feel something different (hope) at these shows. Q What do you enjoy doing in leisure free time (if there is such a thing)?
Q Just about the whole of South Africa heard the iTunes news when ‘The Home We Built’ was released. Did you expect this success? How did it feel to be an overnight sensation? A It was an enormous honour to kick things off with such a buzz. I’m just incredibly grateful that people enjoyed my music enough to get the album to do such a thing! Q What was your journey to become a professional musician? Have you been a musician since childhood? A I started playing guitar when I was 11. My Dad taught me. I played in a few school concerts growing up, but I just played for fun. After school I would write songs then record them and put them online. Somehow that slowly progressed to the release of my debut album and things because very official from then on.
A There is definitely such a thing. As long as I get to spend quality time with my wife, Jess, then I’m happy! I’ve recently taken up boxing training and been completely sucked in, I love it. Q What is your advice for a first romantic date? Do first impressions count? A They definitely do count. You can always make up for something, but first impressions are important. I like to do something fun and unexpected. When I took Jess on our first date, we flew to Durban for the day and did the bungee jump at Moses Mabhida Stadium then went for a picnic. It was hectic, but luckily Jess loved it. Q What is your favourite food? Movie? Song? A Food: chicken fried rice. Movie: The Lion King. Song: New York, New York by Frank Sinatra. Q What role does social media play in your career?
Q What inspires you creatively and personally? Who are ‘your people’? My family. The people close to me will always inspire me personally. Creatively, anything really, when I see something that intrigues me, I want to know more and more.
A It’s huge. The engagement you have with your followers is the most important thing; they are the ones that give you your career. At the same time, being a huge social media icon does not make you a better musician – they are two different parts that can work together if done the right way. Q What is in the pipeline for 2018?
Q Tell us a bit about your family and upbringing. A They have always been the inspiration behind my songwriting. I’ve always been raised with more love and support than I ever could have dreamed of.
A International touring. I will still be around to play shows and release music in South Africa, but I plan to make some strong, intentional steps overseas. Q What message do you have for our readers (high school kids) about leading a successful life and achieving their dreams?
Q What was the highlight(s) of your career this far? A I’ve had the honour of playing with some of my favourite bands and playing at some of my favourite venues. To this day, I will always remember the first time I played a show and noticed everyone singing along to the lyrics, that was a show back in 2013 in KZN.
A If you love something, do it and do it well. Work on it hard. Dream big! You will achieve your goals and your dreams if you work on what you are passionate about and try your best to do it well!

I like to add lots of fresh pomegranate seeds to the glass. I just love to suck the pips clean – they are so swollen with juice and rich in antioxidants! INGREDIENTS • 1 cup sugar • 2 cups gin • 3 cups fresh grapefruit juice • 3/4 cup fresh lime juice • 3/4 cup Cinzano Bianco • 1 cup pomegranate seeds • Crushed ice • Chilled soda to top up the glasses • Extra fresh pomegranate seeds, to garnish • Fresh mint, to garnish METHOD • In a large jug, stir the sugar with the gin, grapefruit juice, lime juice and Cinzano Bianco, until dissolved. • Stir in the pomegranate seeds. Refrigerate until chilled; about 2 hours. • Fill glasses with crushed ice, top up with grapefruit quencher and garnish the glasses with lots of fresh pomegranate seeds and a sprig of fresh mint.

Rosemary and Pomegranate cocktail For the syrup • 2 cups warm water • 1 cup sugar • 4 large sprigs rosemary

Slice of orange 2 cups freshly squeezed orange juice 1 long sprig fresh rosemary 1 cup rosemary syrup 1 cup pomegranate seeds 1 cup of anything white and spirited like vodka, gin, white rum or tequila
METHOD • To make the syrup, place all the ingredients in a saucepan and simmer till reduced by a third; turn off the heat and let the rosemary infuse while the syrup cools. • Add all the cocktail ingredients to a large jug of crushed ice and top up with sparkling mineral water. • To serve, pour into tall glasses filled with crushed ice, and top with a fresh sprig of rosemary

WORCESTER-NOORD PRIMÊRE SKOOL Noordjies is WOW-spelkampioene! WNPS is die enigste skool in Suid-Afrika wat met twee Sanlam WOW-spelkampioene kan spog. Twee van hul leerders is tydens die afgelope spelfees te Stellenbosch as nasionale wenners aangewys. Hierdie twee leerders het ook albei daarin geslaag om dit die tweede keer reg te kry. Millah Spamer het hierdie prestasie in 2016 behaal en Alexa Viljoen was in 2015 aangewys as die beste speller in haar ouderdomsgroep.

Etiketdag Etlike jare gelede is daar besluit om ‘n geleentheid te skep waar die seuns van Paarl Primêre Seunskool sekere vaardighede moes aanleer en bemeester oor hoe om ‘n dame behoorlik te onthaal en spesiaal te laat voel. Nou, 18 jaar later, is die seuns steeds besig om hierdie tradisie voort te sit. The Grade 4 learners hosted the Etiquette Day. It taught boys how to behave like gentlemen within a formal setting. They learnt how to set a table for a 4-course meal, the wording of invitations and menus, table manners, and of course how to waltz! This was a real hit with their guest of honour, their mother! Die seuns is almal netjies geklee in hul skooluniform, terwyl die mammas stylvol aantrek om by die jaarlikse geleentheid te pas. Butterfly House: Skoenboks-projek Op Dinsdag, 31 Oktober het Gimmies ‘n Kerspartytjie vir 120 kindertjies van Butterfly House gehou. Leerders het ‘n sirkustema-toneelstuk vir hulle opgevoer, hulle gesiggies is geverf en daar is behoorlik baljaar op die springkastele. Ons het hulle met hope eetgoed bederf (burgers, sappies, gebottelde water, kolwyntjies, spookasem, springmielies) en vele meer. Elkeen het ook ‘n skoenboks vol geskenkies ontvang. Die blydskap en waardering op elke liewe gesiggie maak hiérdie projek vir ons meer as die moeite werd! Graag bedank ons elke Gimmie-ouer, -leerder, -onderwyser en -vriend wat gehelp het om hierdie wonderlike dag moontlik te maak. Spesiale dank aan jeugleiers Schalk en Yolandi vir hul harde werk.

Die Graad 9-raad van Hugenote Hoërskool het die plaaslike DBV verras met ‘n mooi donasie van R1 000.
Janu Gous, Talitha Janse van Vuuren en Simon Tomlinson het aan die eerste Historium Debatkompetisie by die Taalmuseum in die Paarl deelgeneem. Hugenote het deurgedring tot die finaal teen Hoër Meisieskool en met die wenbeker weggestap. Ons het ook 'n kontantprys van R5 000 ontvang.
Leerlingraad gee vir G-Voucher Die leerlingraad van 2018 het reeds aan die werk gespring met hul projekte. Die eerste hiervan was om blikkieskos in te samel vir die dorp se G-Voucherprojek.
Skoolkoor Gala-aand Die skoolkoor het vanjaar weer ‘n uiters suksesvolle Galakonsert gehad. Die volgepakte saal was twee keer gedurende die konsert op hul voete! Tree of Joy Ons ondersteun jaarliks die Tree of Joy-projek waar ons leerders ten bate van Eden Hoërskool, ‘n LSEN-skool op die dorp, geskenkpakkies insamel en opmaak vir hulle leerders. Hierdie jaar het ons Graad 10 VRL van 2018 ‘n volle 95 pakkies op 3 November gaan afgee. Ons sê baie dankie aan elke leerder en onderwyser wat bygedra het daartoe om ‘n glimlag op die gesigte van hierdie leerders te sit. ‘n Spesiale dankie Juffrou Marais wat elke jaar hierdie projek met soveel passie dryf.
