SCHOOL NEWS
on his brand-new album, being in school and his career

With his debut album, Trading Change, he changed the music scene in 2014. This album gained gold status in South Africa, was crowned Album of the Year by iTunes SA and won multiple awards including MTV Africa Music Award for Best Pop & Alternative in 2015. Fast forward 4 years of awards, number one on all South African radio stations, touring with his inspirational modern folk music all around the world headlining festivals all over Europe, sold out shows in the US and now Jeremy Loops just launched his new album, Critical as Water. Before heading on his world tour, AWSUM had a chat with Jeremy.
We must start off by asking where were you in primary and high school? I went to Kommetjie Primary School. The local school in the village where I grew up. And then for High School, I was at SACS for a bit, before heading off to Reddam. Tell us about your inspirational music career, where and how did it start? I’ve always been artistically inclined, but I’m also deeply rational, and I realised early that the risk profile of majoring in something art-based was much higher than other industries. In university, I did a finance and property degree, but financial maths wasn’t interesting to me the way that art and music was. So I escaped to my guitar every chance I got. That slowly snowballed into where I am today. That’s not to say I wasn’t deliberate in deciding to really go for it, but rather that the start came from a place of escapism and passion, and just pursuing the avenues I felt were worth pursuing led me here. Congratulations on the launch of your new album. One of the singles, ‘Waves’, has garnered over 1 million streams since its release. Each project has its own obstacles. For every zig, there is a zag. Where there many when creating this album? I really struggled to get up to speed when I began writing this album. It took roughly a year to begin producing decent songs, and then another six months on top of that to begin producing good songs. I think a combination of fear and the pressure of expectation weighed heavily on me. I trusted myself, and slowly we began cobbling together something I feel is exceptional. The other major obstacle was managing cash flow, like any business. I’m completely independent and this album is entirely self-funded, and there’s huge financial exposure on something of this undertaking - hence why record labels continue to do well - but I’m happy with the decision to go about it this way. You are the co-founder of Greenpop, please
explain to our readers what Greenpop is about and the good work that you do. Greenpop is a tree-planting organisation that plants trees in under-green and underprivileged communities throughout Southern Africa. To date, we’ve planted more than 85,000 trees. While the overt aim is environmentalism and environmental education - hence the tree-planting - we also use it as a tool to bring communities together and uplift society. Greenpop is one of the things in my life I’m most proud of, and to quite literally watch trees you planted bear fruit and feed communities and improve people’s lives is rewarding in a way that’s quite difficult to explain. You are a Kommetjie Boytjie, do you enjoy going back to your hometown? Our family home is still there, so I’m home all the time. Many of my childhood friends still live out there, and those are relationships that are important to me. Our local surf break is also one of my favourites, so I have lots of reasons to go home to Kommetjie. It’s important to know and to embrace where you come from. After all the success and multiple awards, how do you keep your feet on the ground? By doing just that. Keeping your feet on the ground. I’m not distracted by material things and my goals and my family keep me motivated, so it makes it easier to keep sight of what got me here and to understand that the same philosophy will propel us forward.
Your music is very uplifting and joyful, what inspires you to write such great songs? I write as a reaction to the world I’m in. For my first album, Trading Change, I was in a hopeful and joyous space, so that informed those songs. This song has material that’s much darker, as in songs like Vultures and Underwater Blues, but that’s also a reaction to feeling like the world is a darker place than it’s been in a while. I find that if you’re open to life and to the world, inspiration is there just waiting for you to grab it. You just have to be open to receiving it. What do you see as success? Success is getting to wake up every day doing that which you wish to be doing with your time, whether professionally or personally. Wealth is not success. Acclaim isn’t success. Fame isn’t success. Success is quite literally being the master of your time and being content with how that time is allocated. If you can go back to high school, what would you do differently? Anything you want to tell the 16-year-old Jeremy? I find thinking back is dangerous because it’s to presume that the place you’re in now isn’t a good enough foundation to do the things you wish to do. All our mistakes and successes put us somewhere valuable to make new decisions and to create new opportunities from. So I’d say to 16-year-old Jeremy, ‘do you. We still have time to right the wrongs and to capitalise further on our rights.’
Any advice you can give to our AWSUM fans in school that want to follow a music career? Get the best education you can and study for as long as you can. And please do not make music your primary source of income at the beginning of your career. The less reliant you are on music to make money, the more likely you are to make music you are proud of. Only once your music career feels financially stable or you’ve mitigated as much of the risk as you can then should you jump in full force. You’re young. You have much more time than you realise… but also not that much. So get started! Perfect your instruments and skillsets, study, and live life receptive to learning from Paarl everything and everyone.
Okay, so we know you surf and like to plant trees but what do you do to relax? Spending time with my family, our dog Maya and being in the great outdoors as much as possible. Writing songs, when there is no deadline or pressure to deliver a new album, is another place I look to for relaxing.

Locally, many cookbooks focus on regions or cuisines specific to a section of the population. This book follows a different trajectory. It includes recipes from people from all walks of life. You will find recipes for korma, vindaloo and masala, made with seafood, lamb, beef, tripe and even goat. From fiery, strong curries to curries with subtle flavours. As a 5th generation South African of Indian descendant, Ishay travelled for a year across the length and breadth of South Africa, meeting cooks from all over South Africa, the purpose was to find their store of culinary memories and expertise. Ishay explores the fascinating story of the South African curry. Spanning almost 90 recipes and conversations with more than 60 cooks and food experts, Ishay threads together these aromatic flavours - from a classic KwaZulu-Natal crab curry to the Cape Malay chicken and crayfish curry, from Calvinia offal to kasi beef, from Orlando West to Qunu. Learn to cook Karoo venison, kerkbasaar kerrie en rys and vegetarian dhals – recipes taken from respected local cooks as they share their stories and recipes. This is a true tour through South Africa’s soul. Ex-lawyer Ishay is an award-winning travel and food blogger. In her blog, Food and the Fabulous, she writes about locals, cuisines, travel guides, topical issues and current affairs. She also writes for a variety of print and digital media, including the Sunday Times Travel UK, Mail & Guardian, Business Day, Olive Magazine and Fine Dining Lovers, to mention a few. Coming from Durban I love nothing better than a good fish curry and this one Rahul’s Fried Fish Curry is delicious, give it a try.

So with the Easter break coming up Pepe Sofianos says get your gear up to scratch and your hair on high.
ALL HYPED U P!
Is it a fashion find or a glorified slipper? The new Gucci-style slides, trimmed with fake fur, of course, are your next must-have shoes. Part shaggy slippers, part preppy loafers with that nevermiss horse bit logo, these furry slides are the bomb. The eyecatching looks mean you don’t have to try too hard for some real fashion flair so team them with cropped jeans and cheeky fishnet knee-hi’s. Stepping into winter doesn’t get much comfier, or cooler, than this. Find yours at The FIX, R R149.99.
You got it --- this is Macaulay Culkin wearing a T-shirt with Ryan Gosling on it. And why not, both looking so hot?
FURRY FOOTSIES
Style Icon Olivia Palermo knows a good thing when she sees it and she’s cottoned onto the super-sleeve look big time.
STATEMENT SLEEVES are the season’s hottie. Just take a look around you and you’ll see everyone’s got something up their sleeves. Puffy, ruffled and larger-than-life, OTT sleeves are taking over the streets. Blow everyone away with this striking blue and white crossover blouse with sleeves to sigh over, R279.99, The FIX.
Hilary Duff is everyone’s style crush even when she’s running in the rain in her oh-so-chic furry slides.
TREND ALERT!
@ PEPE SAYS
Shoes, sleeves and slick hairstyles are so rad RN there’s no way we can’t drool over them again and again and again … Enjoy!
WAX ON. WAX OFF.
Former 1D band mate Zayn Malik stepped up his game on the Red Carpet at the Oscars a few weeks ago sporting a trendy retro high top style. Check out the top of this page and you’ll see what I mean. For the girls it’s eye candy; for you guys it’s proof that a little hair wax goes a long way. So what is this stuff? It’s a thick hairstyling product containing wax which helps to mould, shape and hold your hairstyle. Because of its mea-styling power, you can create movement and add texture.
How to use hair wax:
1.Don’t just blob it on or you’ll get a greasy mess. To start, take a bit about the size of your pinkie nail and warm it in your palms. 2. Next, apply a thin even coating on your hair and style from the roots to the tips, while lifting your hair upwards as you go. Add a bit more wax more if you need it. 3. Finally arrange your hair in the style you want while twisting, scrunching or spiking up the tips if you want to add texture. It’s best to use wax on dry hair. The type of hair wax you use will also vary, depending on the style you want and it works whether you’re 8 or 18! See how these bro’s handled theirs.
Big Bro 1 and Lil Bro 1 --- for a slick high top, Perfect Touch Shine & Hold Wax, R46.95.
Big Bro 2 and Lil Bro 2 --- for a messy or spiky look, VO5 Rework Putty, R64.95.
Use Hair Gum Gummy, R149 to tame sides and scrunch hair for extra bang and there’s a whole wardrobe of waxes from Gatsby, R84.95, to switch your look from day to day.
Big Bro 3 and Lil Bro 3 --- for a smooth upsweep, L’Oréal Style Rework Architect Shine Wax, R71.95.

This year will definitely be a challenge for Boland Landbou head coach, Oloff Bergh, after having had a very successful 2017. The school is always featured within the top 20 South African schools on various online rugby platforms. Bergh might be a tad short on seasoned tight five players but the firepower at the back will make up for it. Players like Darren Hendricks, Erik Lambrecht, Sebastian de Klerk and speedster HD van der Merwe will certainly bolster Bergh’s squad.

SA players selected for Africa Pacific Dragons meet mentor Cornal Hendricks
Five players from three local Paarl schools have been selected to play in the Africa Pacific Dragons team at the inaugural World Schools Festival from 2-7 April.
Players from New Orleans Secondary School, Bridge House School and Klein Nederburg Secondary School have been selected to play in the Festival which is being launched this year as part of Paarl Boys’ High School’s 150-year anniversary celebrations. The Dragons team is built on the ethos of nurturing talent and promoting the game around the world by creating opportunities for players to participate in international rugby tournaments. Former Springbok flyer Cornal Hendricks, who will be mentoring the team at the World Schools Festival met the players on Friday, along with Carinat Sports Marketing Managing Director and ex-Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer. Hendricks, who has played for the Dragons in 10s tournaments, said the players would gain valuable experience playing with players from other nations in a worldclass tournament. “Personally it’s a great honour to be working with Victor, Jaco and Hale again but more than this, I think it’s really exciting for the players,” Hendricks said after meeting the players. “It’s great that the APD’s are incorporating local talent into the team. This is fantastic international exposure for these guys, both because of the standard of the players and the standard of the tournament. I’m really looking forward to it.” Springbok legends Victor Matfield and Jaco van der Westhuyzen will be coaching the invitational team and will be assisted by Hendricks, Tongan international Hale T-Pole and Samoan scrum-half and Auckland Rugby Union Development coach Junior Poluleuligaga. The rest of the Africa Pacific Dragons XV will be made up of schoolboys from Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand and Australia. This is the first time the Dragons will be selected at U18s schoolboy level, having made their name at senior level. Reaching out to Paarl Boys’ High’s neighbouring schools, Carinat Sports Marketing requested that players from the local community be included in the Invitational Africa Pacific Dragons XV.
These players were nominated by their respective schools to be part of this historic new event. The Festival will promote the traditional values of the sport forging relationships across continents through the shared love of rugby. Join us in Paarl 2-7 April and see rugby’s #FutureHeroes in action! Tickets available on www.computicket.com Prices vary from R55 for adults, R35 for school pupils between the ages of 10 and 18, and children under the age of 10 are charged R15 per person per day. Four-day rugby passes are priced at R190, R110 and R35 for adults, school pupils and children respectively.
