AWSUMCelebrity Interview
KAHN & The Parlotones The Parlotones is one of South Africa’s most loved and successful bands, with multi-platinum album status and major international acclaim and fans. Lead singer and songwriter Kahn Morbee’s lyrics focus on personal themes of love and everyday life, paired with catchy melodies that engage their audience. Formed in 1998, the group consists of Kahn (vocals and rhythm guitar), Paul Hodgson (lead guitar), Glenn Hodgson (bass guitar, keyboards and backing vocals) and Neil Pauw (drums and percussion). AWSUM News caught up with Kahn and the band whilst on their countrywide tour ‘The Stories Behind the Songs’.
Paul, Kahn, Glenn and Neil
Q: Many of your lyrics have multiple layers of meaning. Tell us about the new show, the title of which is very intriguing and seems to talk to your lyrics. A: ‘The Stories Behind the Songs’ tour is part of a book that we are working on, in which each band member shares a memory of every single album we have done from the start. The book will be in coffee table format, with loads of photos and wonderful stories.
Q What was your earliest success, when you considered yourself to be ‘on the map’? A Our first album launch. It was very exciting and we felt a sense of accomplishment for something we’d dreamt of. Our first award was also a proud moment, because it meant approval and kind of eradicated a lot of doubt and gave us a belief and confidence in ourselves.
Q: What was the inspiration for the concept of the book and the show? A: Creating music that resonates with our fans is something that we are very proud of and we are looking forward to sharing the method behind our madness when it comes to the processes and ideas behind constructing each and every song, be it the different paths in life we have travelled, to the experiences and adventures. We are enjoying sharing these stories with our fans across the country.
Q Tell us a bit about your international footprint. A We have toured internationally since 2007, spending months on the road in the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and North America. We have also toured in South America, Canada, Australia, Japan and Russia, and have shared the stage with Coldplay, Starsailor, Snow Patrol, Live, Ash, Razorlight, Blue October, Violent Femmes, Imagine Dragons, and many more.
Q: Kahn, how did your iconic show make-up happen? A: A couple of years ago we did a show at a cosmopolitan party and we played with eight other bands. We wanted to stand out and be remembered, so I applied the make-up and it has been a hit ever since. Q: How did The Parlotones happen? A: We started jamming as a garage band in 1998. We can’t believe that we have been jamming together for 16 years already! We feel like family members. Q: Kahn, you have embarked on a solo career as well. How did that come about? A: I thought it was time to start working on my own unique sound, but I’m still involved with The Parlotones (before people start worrying!). I am known only as Kahn for my solo performances and am pursuing a more introspective, personal approach to my craft. Q: What were some highlights of the journey as The Parlotones? A: One of our favourite memories of the early years was when the band performed at the Coca-Cola Dome in 2009. We became the first South African band to sell out at the Dome, with about 13 000 fans attending that show. Another proud moment was when we performed at the opening concert of the 2010 FIFA World Cup with famous artists like The Black Eyed Peas and Shakira.

Q What are your aspirations as a band? A We have always aspired not only to have fun making music, but also to give back to our community. Over the years, we have raised funds and awareness for a variety of social and environmental organisations, such as Earth Hour amd Nelson Mandela’s 46664. We are also ambassadors for the anti-poaching organisation Rhino Force and several other nonprofits that combat problems that acutely affect South Africa. Q Kahn, your songwriting prowess and stage presence has garnered you a huge fan base. How do you keep inspired? A On stage, I remind myself that I’ve been blessed to be able to do what I love and I need to show the audience that. Wether it’s 40 or 40 000 people. I think that I kind of take on an alter ego when I perform because I want people to feel, experience a certain exhibition that a performer displays. It’s like a quick fix of freedom before the trappings of real life re-emerge. It’s a fix for me and hopefully the audience as well. I may not take everyone on that journey, but I hope to take some. I love biographies because real-life stories of people help me relate that to my life and inspire me. I love books on science, arts, philosophy, religion, belief systems, economics and politics, because they all try to explain our existence from a different perspective and I find it fascinating. I believe the arts – whether it be literature, art, music, film or poetry – try to do the same as the above, but in a condensed form. It suggests a line of thought but allows its audience to subscribe to its own interpretation.

Nuts about Butternut!!!
by Jenny Morris @jennymorrischef
The one vegetable I love eating all year round is butternut, but I especially love it in winter. It says comfort to me. You can use it in so many ways: roasted with rosemary, a touch of salt and sugar and extra virgin olive oil; in soups, mashed with lashings of butter; it is great as a stuffing for cannelloni; great in risotto, fritters, or raw in salads – you can have your way in so many ways with butternut! The way to choose the perfect butternut is to look for one with a nice long neck and small bottom. Butternut squash seeds are tasty and are eaten as nutritious snack food since they contain 35–40% oil and 30% protein, so don’t throw them away – roast them and eat them. The butternut itself I’m told is low in calories, with 100g providing just 45 calories – that makes me happy, as it means I can eat lots of it. (My problem is I lash it with butter, so there goes the low calorie count ...). It is also a wonderful vegetable for your skin because it of its extremely high vitamin A content, and great for your hair too. There are also significant amounts of vitamin C, E, K, B6, folate and thiamine found in butternut. So let’s eat it – come and cook with me.
Let’s Cook!!
Roasted butternut cheesecake with burnt sage butter Serves 6 – 8 When cooking with sage be sure to choose nice fleshy leaves, firm green stalks and definitely not a sign of wilting or blemishes. It will be even more delicious if you pick it just before you need to use it. The base • 150 g savoury biscuit crumbs • 100 g melted butter • 1 teaspoon chopped rosemary needles The filling • 500 g peeled butternut cubes
• 2 teaspoons olive oil • 2 teaspoons rosemary needles • salt • pepper • 1 teaspoon brown sugar • 2 eggs, beaten • 1 cup cream • 300 g ricotta cheese • 1 cup grated mature cheddar cheese • ¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg • 2 cloves crushed garlic Burnt sage butter sauce • 100 g butter • 15 fresh fleshy sage leaves
• To prepare the base, mix the crumbs, butter and rosemary together. Press the mixture into a 20 cm spring-form baking tin, and set till firm in the fridge. • Make the filling next. Preheat the oven to 180 °C. Toss the butternut with the olive oil, rosemary, salt, pepper and sugar, and roast till tender – about 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside. • Blend together the eggs, cream, ricotta, cheddar, nutmeg and garlic, and spoon over the biscuit base. Bake at 180 °C until set – approximately 35 to 40 minutes. • Just before the cheesecake is ready to come out of the oven, prepare the sage butter sauce. Heat the butter in a pan until it begins to foam. Add the sage and cook until the butter starts to go nutty and brown, and the leaves are crisp. • Serve the cheesecake warm with some burnt sage butter, or cold with a large green salad.
