For this month of love, AWSUM will be jumping on the romantic bandwagon. THE PERFECT PARTY Chocolate and cherry cream meringue gâteau

Serves 6-8
The inspiration for making chocolate Pavlova (which is, in essence, what this gâteau is), came from dear friend and wonderful cook Stephanie Pattinson, whom I regard as a second mom. It’s a really special dessert: meringue stacked high with layers of cream and melted chocolate, and sprinkled with cherries. True decadence, and definitely worth the effort.
Use a metal spoon to fold in the vanilla, vinegar, corn flour and cocoa powder lightly but thoroughly. Spoon the meringue mixture on to the prepared baking sheet. Make four circles, each with a 20cm diameter, with fairly thick bases and raised edges. Bake for one hour then turn off the heat. Leave the meringue in the oven until completely cold (preferably overnight).
For the chocolate meringue • 8 egg whites • pinch of salt • 450g castor sugar • 10ml vanilla extract • 20ml white vinegar • 40ml corn flour, sifted • 30ml cocoa powder, sifted
To make the filling Place the chocolate and 200ml cream in a double-boiler and stir over low heat until the chocolate is just melted. Leave to cool completely. Stir the vanilla into the 300ml whipped cream. Place a meringue disc on a serving platter, spread with a quarter of the chocolate mixture followed by a quarter of the whipped cream. Top with another meringue disc and repeat three more times. Garnish the final layer of chocolate and cream with fresh fruit and the optional grated chocolate.
For the layers • 180g good quality dark chocolate • 200ml cream (to melt with chocolate)* • 10ml vanilla extract or seed scrapings of 1 vanilla pod • 300ml cream, whipped until just stiff* • fresh cherries or strawberries for garnishing • grated chocolate for garnishing (optional) *this recipe uses 500ml cream in total To make the meringue Preheat the oven to 140˚C. Line a baking sheet with baking paper. Whisk the egg whites and salt until just stiff. Gradually mix in the castor sugar, one spoon at a time. Whisk the mixture until glossy and thick.
Coffee and hazelnut alternative Omit the cocoa powder from the meringue recipe and add 20ml instant espresso coffee powder to the mixture instead. Once the meringue discs are baked, layer them with whipped cream and caramel-dipped hazelnuts. Note: For one large Pavlova, halve the ingredients for the chocolate meringue. Top with the melted chocolate and cream (optional).

Go green for the month of love and repurpose old pieces of wood into candle sticks. YOU’LL NEED: Thick pieces of wood Saw and hammer Cutting tongs Panel pin nails WHAT TO DO: • Start by selecting a few different pieces of wood. • If the stumps are uneven, use the saw to resize them – and to make sure they
don’t fall over. • Hammer a nail into the piece of wood until there is approximately 1.5cm sticking out. This will be used to hold the candle. • Once the nail has been secured, use the cutting tongs to remove the head. • You can also hammer nails into the side of the piece of wood to add a decorative
element. I made some birds from modelling clay. • Be careful when placing the candle on to the exposed nail, as using too much force might cause the candle to split. To avoid this, warm the nail with a lighter before trying to position the candle.

Dit was tot groot vermaak vir die kinders toe hy self ‘n draai of twee op die sportgronde moes maak in hierdie vinnige kar! Ons wens vir Meneer ‘n baie mooi lewensjaar toe vol avontuurlustige ritte!

Anke Barnard en Madri Conradie was deel van die Noord-Boland tennisspan wat deelgeneem het aan die Boland Plattelandproewe op 23 en 24 Januarie. Anke het 2de geëindig in die o/19-ouderdomsgroep en verteenwoordig nou die Boland Plattelandspan wat 21 Februarie teen die SWD in George speel.

Na afloop van Hoërskool Robertson se jaarlikse kleure-swemgala, is Johann van Dyk aangewys as die Victor Lodorum en Bianca Sussmann as die Victrix Lodorum.

BESOEK DIE TWO OCEANS AKWARIUM
Die Intermediêre Fase en Grondslagfase het op 12 Februarie ‘n besoek aan die Two Oceans Akwarium in Kaapstad gebring. Seelewe vorm deel van die kurruikulum vir altwee hierdie fases, en om dit te met hulle oë te aanskou, was ‘n ongelooflike ondervinding vir die leerders.

ARBEIDSTERAPIE PROGRAM
Die KWOD het die Arbeidsterapie Program aan die begin van die jaar aan al die onderwysers van kleuerskole voorgelê. Die program is opgestel deur die IO-span Arbeidsterapeute en Distrikterapeut. Die program is reeds verlede jaar by sommige skole begin doen. Die De la Bat Kleuterskool het vanjaar die program geïimplimenteer en onder leiding van die arbeidsterapeut, Me. Antoinette Coetzee hoop die onderwysers om ‘n positiewe verskil in die kleuters se lewens te maak.

Jessica Groenewald is tydens ‘n gala geleentheid van die KWOD aangewys as die Matriek top-presteerder van De la Batskool. Dit is die vyfde aaneenvolgende jaar dat De la Batskool ‘n 100 % slaagsyfer handhaaf in die Senior Sertifikaat eksamen.

KLEUREATLETIEK
Op 29 Januarie 2015 was dit weer die groot stryd tussen die Groenspan en die Blouspan! Alle leerders het die 60m en die 80m gehardloop en dit gate uit geniet. Groenspan was die “Army” vir die dag en Blouspan het “Frozen” die animasiefilm voorgestel.

MINI-ATLETIEK BYEENKOMS
Op 27 Januarie 2015 het RVS hul Mini-Atletiek byeenkoms gehou. Onder lekker koel weersomstandighede kon Graad 2 en 3 leerders Hoogspring, Verspring, Diskus gooi asook Gewigstoot.
Hermanus Bruwer en Raynell van Reenenn neem aan gewigstoot deel.
Farren Britz konsentreer mooi by die Diskus.

Met groot opgewondenheid het Laerskool Montagu se atlete aan hierdie jaar se Kleure-atletiek deelgeneem. Beide die Rooi- en die Groenspan het getrou atletiek geoefen, asook nuwe liedjies aangeleer
onder leiding van hulle dirigente. Tydens die byeenkoms is sewe rekords gebreek. Die Rooispan het hierdie jaar met die spanbeker, sowel as die geesbeker weggestap.

Tydens die Langeberg-atletiekbyeenkoms het ons atlete ook puik presteer. Veertig atlete het deurgedring na die Noord-Boland byeenkoms.
VALENTYNSDAG
Die Monties het op 13 Februarie baie pret gehad met Valentynsdag. Kaartjies is uitgedeel en leerders kon rooi en wit aantrek. Hierdie jaar het leerders ook ‘n R5 donasie gegee, wat die Monties aan ‘n kinderhuis gaan skenk.
