The National Benchmark Tests Are you in Grade 12? Are you thinking of applying to a South African university? If so, you’ll have to write the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs). Here, we summarise some of the key things you need to know about the tests. What are the NBTs? The National Benchmark Tests measure your academic readiness for university. They complement and support (rather than replace or duplicate) your National Senior Certificate (NSC) results. Who uses them, and how? A number of universities across South Africa use the NBTs to help interpret your NSC results. Universities use the NBT results in different ways: Some use them to help make decisions about your access to university. This means that your NBT results, in combination with your NSC results, are used to determine whether you are ready for academic study. Some use them to determine placement within the university. This means that the results are used to decide whether you will need extra academic support after being admitted to university. Some use the tests to aid in curricula development within the university – what is taught and when. What do I have to know about writing the NBTs? You can find out all you need to know about writing the NBTs in 2015 on the National Benchmark Tests website, www.nbt. ac.za. Here are some important points: There are two tests: The AQL, or Academic Literacy and Quantitative Literacy test, and the MAT, or Mathematics test.
Everyone applying to a university that uses the NBTs has to write the AQL test. The MAT test is reserved for those candidates who wish to apply to programmes for which Maths is a requirement, such as Health Sciences, Engineering, Accounting, and most of the sciences. There are no past papers or special study materials to prepare for the tests. The tests assess your prior knowledge: what you know and are able to do. You must register online to write the tests, and you pay up front. Go to www. nbt.ac.za to register. A complete schedule containing all test locations and dates is available on the NBT website. The costs are as follows: R80 for the AQL test only, and R160 for the AQL and MAT tests taken together. It is important that you write the test(s) in time to meet university admission deadlines. If you are applying to more than one university, make sure to take the test(s) in time to meet the earliest deadline. See www.nbt.ac.za for more details. CHINA YEAR IN SA TOUR Since the beginning of 2015 Worcester Gymnasium, in partnership with Stellenbosch University, has been offering classes in Mandarin. We are one of the very few such institutions across the country. The Confucius Institute of Stellenbosch University are giving 100 learners a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit China on a cultural and educational
trip. 20 of WG’s learners will be visiting China from the 26th of June to the 11th of July. They will spend the first week in Beijing, visiting sites such as Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall of China. The second week will be spent attending summer school in Xiamen where they will have to opportunity to engage with the unique culture of China.

LSEN CRAVENWEEK OP TRAPPESPARK Nadat ons in 2014 ‘n baie suksesvolle O/18 Coca Cola Akademieweek aangebied het, is dit hierdie jaar in samewerking met Boland Rugbyunie tyd vir die LSEN Rugby Cravenweek op ons eie Trappespark. Hierdie langdswye toernooi is vir Leerders met Spesiale Onderwysbehoeftes en word hierdie jaar reeds vir die 34ste keer aangebied. Drostdy is trots daarop om die geleentheid te hê om sulke fantastiese toernooie op ons eie gronde aan te bied. Die openingseremonie vind plaas op Maandag 29 Junie om 14:15. Na afloop van die toernooi word daar ‘n span aangewys wat die volgende week aan die Akademieweek gaan deelneem as die SA LSEN-span. Moenie hierdie geleentheid misloop nie!

Jason Beukes en Jaco van Staden van die Drostdy Stoei Akademie het SuidAfrika verteenwoordig by die Afrika Stoeikampioenskap in Egipte. Hulle presteer uitsonderlik. Jaco behaal ‘n algehele vierde plek en Jason bring vir die tweede jaar in ‘n ry die silwermedalje huis toe. Baie geluk ook aan hulle afrigter, mnr. Kurt Hertzog.
DROSTDY EN VUSISIZWE VAT HANDE
Die ATKV bied elke jaar ‘n Handevatprojek aan waar hulle skole uitdaag om ‘n daadwerklike, volhoubare verskil in hul gemeenskappe te maak. Drostdy het besluit om die uitdaging te aanvaar en vat hande met Vusisizwe Sekondêre Skool in Zwelentemba op Worcester. Die oogmerke van hierdie projek sluit in om klaskamers te verf en van ekstra leermateriaal te voorsien, om sporttoerusting aan te koop en kantoortoerusting op te gradeer. Ons droom egter ook nog groter en beplan om binne die volgende jaar of twee vir Vusisizwe ‘n sokkerveld te bou. Enige instansies wat by die projek betrokke wil raak, kontak gerus vir juf. Spicy hot cauliflower salad

Serves 4 Ingredients: • 4 tbls olive oil • 1 tsp white mustard seeds • 2 cm fresh root ginger, peeled and cut into thin strips • 2 cloves garlic, roughly chopped • ½ tsp turmeric • 2 green chillies, sliced in half lengthways • 3 cups snowy white cauliflower florets • Juice of 1 lemon • ½ tsp salt • Wellingtons Chutney of your choice • 2 tbls coriander, roughly chopped Method: Heat the olive oil, add the mustard seeds and cook till they pop. They jump all over so be careful – and don’t burn them! Add the ginger and garlic, turmeric and chillies and fry gently while stirring all the time for about 2 minutes. Add the cauliflower, give it a good stir to coat with the spices and cook for 8- 10 minutes. Remove from the heat, add the lemon juice, stir in the Chutney, salt and coriander and give it a good toss. Serve hot. Tip: This is great as a salad served at room temperature, or served hot as a side dish. It also works as a vegetarian dish served with fragrant saffron rice. © Jenny Morris 2014 -2015

SADGA KAMPIOENSKAPPE
Shane en Darren het deelgeneem aan die SADGA kampioenskappe wat in Mei te Pretoria aangebied is. Ons 2 gholfspelers het hul goed van hul taak gekwyd en ons trots gemaak op hulle met Darren wat eerste geeindig het en Shane tweede.
GRAAD 7’S KAMP
Die graad 7’s het hul kamp gehad by Gansbaai. Die huis waarin hule gewoon het vir die naweek was Nonnetjie uil huis en die plaas se naam, De Uijlenes , van mnr en mev Groenewalt.

BOLAND KARATE
Baie geluk aan die volgende leerders wat Boland tydens die SuidAfrikaanse Karate Kampioenskappe (31 Julie tot 2 Augustus) sal verteenwoordig: Joël Gordon, Willie-Pieter du Plessis, Ethan Cole, Arno Wright, John Wright, Zindi van Zyl, Anton Jordaan, Abraham Jordaan en Nicholas Brunings.
GR. 2: UITSTAPPIE NA KLEINPLASIE
Die gr.2’s het hierdie jaar ‘n baie aangename, opvoedkundige uitstappie na Kleinplasie onderneem. Hulle het baie geleer oor plaasdiere; hulle het geleentheid gekry om pluimvee te voer en hulle het selfs op donkies en ‘n donkiekar gery. Hulle het die dag afgesluit met ‘n treinrit en ‘n heerlike piekniek.

Roann Joubert is gekies vir die o/13 Rugby Boland XV-Tal wat aan die Nashua XV-Tal week te Sasolburg (5 – 8 Julie 2015) sal deelneem. Baie geluk met hierdie puik prestasie. Sterkte met die voorbereiding: ons is trots op jou!

René Dippenaar het ongelooflik goed presteer vanjaar in sport. Sy het in al die sportsoorte waaraan sy deelneem provinsiale kleure behaal. SA Gymkana, Boland Pinotage Hokkie, Boland Netbal en Boland swem.
TOP 10 NETBAL
Juf Corma Mars en haar 0/12 Netbal dogters het deurgedring na die Wes-KaapTop 10 skole kompetisie wat op Stellenbosch gehou is.
TENNIS
André het aan die Interprovinsiale tennistoernooi deelgeneem en die 0/11A span, waarvan hy deel was, het eerste geëindig. Daarna het hy aan die Nasionale tenniskampioenskappe deelgeneem. Uit 40 spelers het hy 6de geëindig! Knap gedaan, André!
SKAAK
Bea van Zyl is ‘n skaakspeler met wie rekening gehou moet word. Sy het vanjaar weer haar Bolandkleure verwerf asook WesKaap kleure. Sy gaan eersdaags aan die SA toernooi in Kaapstad en ook aan die South African Junior Chess Champion.

Sportdag
Die afgelope, 15 Mei 2015, naweek het FD Conradie hulle groot sportdag gehad. Agt skole van oral oor die Kaap het kom deelneem, Laerskool Dirkie Uys, Bastion, WA Joubert, Olifantsvallei, Goudini, Nouveau Kollege, Worcester-Oos en Koue Bokkeveld.
Dit was gesonde kompitiesie en aan die einde van die dag spog ons met die o/11- en o/13 netbal- en rugbyspanne wat al hul wedstryde gewen het. Baie dankie aan almal wat die dag moontlik gemaak het, asook ons borge.

Wolseley Toerisme het ‘n kunskompetisie aangebied vir gr.7-leerders. Die tema was: “Die trein kom Wolseley toe”. Daar is met die beoordeling gekyk na: kunstegniek, kleurgebruik en interpretasie van die tema. Die volgende leerders was die wenners van geskenkbewyse: 1ste plek: Zoe Zeemand (Laerskool
Breerivier), 2de plek: Johannes Smuts (Laerskool Wolseley) 3de plek: Delina Muller (Laerskool Wolseley) Die skole-prys het gegaan aan Witzenberg Primer.
NUWE BOEKWURMS Chenay Heynse en Lieb van der Merwe is die nuwe boekwurms van Laerskool Koue Bokkeveld. Hierdie leerders ontvang elkeen ‘n prys omdat hulle al 20 boeke gelees het hierdie jaar.
