29 SEPTEMBER - 2 OCTOBER

Welcome message from Rondebosch Boys’ High School Welcome to competing schools, coaches, managers, colleagues, supporters and parents. The Cape Schools Cricket Week is the longest running schools’ cricket week in the country, having started in 1968, with eight teams – four from the EP and border and from Cape Town – meeting for a festival of cricket. The original teams were Grey, Queen’s, Dale and Union High from the Eastern region, with the Western Cape sides being SACS, Wynberg, Bishops and Rondebosch. In the years following the inaugural week, Selborne (1969) and Kimberley Boys’ High (1971) were also included, although the number of teams attending the festival remained at eight until 10 teams contested 1988 edition. Since the turn of the century, the number of teams has varied from 10 to 12. This will be the 51st time the founding schools meet and as you would expect in half a century of tournaments, the week has seen a number of players who have reached the highest level of the game coming through its ranks. Legends such as Kenny McEwan, Peter Kirsten, Allan Lamb, Jacques Kallis, Gary Kirsten, Garth le Roux and Jonathan Trott have all played in the week. The festival was conceived as an opportunity to offer a competition between schools that shared a similar sporting ethos but, because of distance, did not otherwise meet competitively. While this has changed as more national competitions are played, the essence remains the same. It builds the spirit that binds all sportsmen between schools who have enjoyed years of competition and collegiality. This is not a competition; nothing is at stake other than enjoying good cricket and the development of real and lasting relationships between sportsmen and coaches at like-minded schools. Thank you to the organisers; teachers and parents, who have put together this week of cricketing competition and the sponsors who see the value in supporting school sport and festivals of this kind. Thanks to all who have coordinated, planned and schemed and who are working in the background with umpiring, scoring, administrating, hosting and catering to ensure that we might eat, drink and sleep cricket. We trust you will enjoy the time spent under the shadow of Devil’s Peak at Rondebosch Boys’ High School, and trust that pure enjoyment, good spectatorship and good sportsmanship and ultimately good and lasting friendships will be made.

Message from Rob Dalrymple Head of Cricket | Rondebosch Boys’ High School Rondebosch Boys’ High School is privileged to be hosting the 2018 edition of the Cape Schools’ Week Cricket Festival. Cape Schools’ Week began all the way back in the 1960s and has a rich heritage of producing top class players. This year the competition looks to be stiff with 5 of the top ranked 10 schools in the country taking part. The hosts are ranked number 5 in the country and have consistently been ranked in the top five for the last 7 years. PINELANDS NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 531 3414 (e) admin@pnps.co.za Sneak preview of the Play 2018 A Family Album is a gentle comedy made up of 8 short vignettes, describing the developments in the life of a young family. The action starts just before the arrival of the first baby and carries us through to the point at which she sets off into the big, wide, world. Siblings arrive, milestones are met, phases are passed through and all of these are captured in a family album. The family's moments of love, laughter, and life, are interspersed with roof raising dance numbers, and multi-media art. Come and join Pinelands North Primary School for an evening to remember.

Paying it Forward The theme for Pinelands North Primary’s July holiday project was ‘Paying it Forward’. We had a large quantity of money boxes donated to us which the children could decorate and fill with money. They could either donate the money to a worthy cause or use it to purchase items for someone in need. The photos and stories brought to school at the beginning of the term attest to the enthusiasm and good spirit of our children.

BERGVLIET PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 715 1103 (e) secretary@bergvlietprimary.co.za Celebrating National Book Week 2018 The Library became a land of Trufulla trees where we celebrated the work of Dr Seuss. Each class decorated their door according to a book of their choice and the passages became alive with many different genre of Fiction. Learners were encouraged to read as many different books as they could for a Reading Competition, which many embraced and visited the Library daily. On Thursday, Staff and Learners came to school dressed as their favourite book characters and the school became the setting of many stories. It was a fun filled week of reading and enjoying books.

Pinelands High Girls Win League

Reaching Higher – Achieving More

Pinelands High School 1st team hockey girls won the U19 Town Central girls league this September. The league ended with two top-of-the-table clashes in one week. Pinelands won both games, beating Brackenfell 3-0 and Edgemead 3-1 on the final day of the season. Over the league season the team won 11 out of 11 matches, scoring 38 goals and conceding only 3 along the way. They showed great commitment all year and winning the league was a product of their hard work and dedication.

The annual Grade 8 and 10 camps took place on 12 – 14 September. At Back2Basics in Grabouw, the grade 10s enjoyed a variety of teambuilding and problem-solving challenges. The high ropes course proved too much of a challenge for some, but the experience was amazing. A group of 150 grade 8s descended on Boot Camp SA in Buffelsdrif to have the time of their lives. The physical challenges and fun activities were the best way to strengthen and unite this group even more. On 18 September, three GSHS students received highest honours when they received their Protea colours for Drum Majorettes. Charisma Hendricks (Gr.10), Casey Davids (Gr.8) and Ni’mat Waggie (Gr.8) will be participating in the Drum Majorette World Championships. They make us proud!

WESTERFORD HIGH SCHOOL (t) 021 689 9154 (e) admin@westerford.co.za ARK Week 2018 “Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.” – Princess Diana Kindness is crucially important to making the world a better place. However, in this fast-paced and high-stress world, kindness often falls by the wayside, and we don’t take time to do those small things for others which would make their days so much better. It is with this in mind that the Westerford PR prefects hosted their annual ARK Week. This year there was a focus on personal acts of kindness, such as making someone a card, rather than just buying them a chocolate – though there was still plenty of chocolate to go round! The prefects hosted two events to help pupils do something personal for others. These were a card-making event and a tea-making event where pupils could make a warm cup of tea for a grateful recipient. The random acts of kindness weren’t just focused on pupils, but also on teachers. The prefects put envelopes up where pupils could submit kind and appreciative notes for teachers they wished to thank for input of whatever kind. The emphasis on being kind brightened everyone’s week and was a great way to kick-off the term. Thank you to the PR prefects for hosting such an inspiring week! Hannah McDougall - Grade 12

isiXhosa Cultural Evening

Cabarain One cannot help but notice the truly electric energy that takes a hold of the Westerford campus when the 3rd term begins; as the Matrics prepare to bid the school farewell, the changeover process commences and the Grade 10s frantically scramble to meet the dreaded Reading Project deadline. However, nothing characterises this time of year quite so well as the excited chattering of masses of exhausted Grade 11s. As the school gates open, so too does the dash to bring together the annual spectacle that is Cabaret. This year’s production, Cabarain, dealt with Cape Town’s water crisis. The class of 2019 delivered a charming mix of singing, dancing, acting, comedy and pure fun, highlighting the remarkable talents of this diverse group of young people. A production of this scale can only run smoothly with hours upon hours of rehearsal and diligent planning, under the helpful supervision of Mr Voerman, Ms Hanekom and Mr Hutton-Squire. Not a single Grade 11 would dispute that the sacrifices made for holiday rehearsals and late nights spent at school, were ultimately well-worth it, considering the standard of performance that was produced. The response to Cabarain 2018 has been overwhelmingly positive and as WHS starts to look to next year, it seems as though staff and pupils (Matrics included) agree that our Grade 10s certainly have a tough act to follow! Nadia Odendaal - Grade 11

On Thursday 2nd, pupils from various high schools gathered together in the Noel Taylor Hall to celebrate the rich and vibrant isiXhosa culture. The night was jam-packed with entertainment: the harmonious and joyful songs of choirs; the gqom and gumboot dances that raised the roof; the profound and gripping poems, as well as several other performances. It was spectacular, to say the least! The joy and cheer as the audience watched - an audience of of all ages and cultures - could be felt in the air that night. The delicious meal served during the interval was equally well received. The isiXhosa culture is one that many are proud to be a part of, for obvious reasons, and definitely one that deserves the type of appreciation and reverence that it was given at this event. A big thanks goes to the Xhosa Club for organising and running a successful and entertaining evening. A special thanks to all the diligent Westerfordians who helped run the evening. This event was Mc-ed by Liya Kilani and managed by Xhosa Club chairperson Nathi Mkonto, Mrs Mapukata and Mr Dugmore. Enkosi ngosuku olumnandi, kwaye enkosi ngokubhiyozela isiko lesiXhosa nathi. (Thank you for the great evening and for joining us to celebrate the Xhosa culture). Emmanuel Abiodun - Grade 11

ST JOSEPH’S MARIST COLLEGE (t) 021 685 6715 (e) admin@maristsj.co.za Congratulations!

Tamzyn Freeks (Grade 11), Marzia Barry (Grade 11) Both Tamzyn Freeks (trombone) and Marzia Barry (voice) were selected for the National Schools A Big Band at The Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival in Grahamstown this year. Tamzyn currently plays with the Sekunjalo Youth Band as well as the first all-female South African Big Band, Lady Day. They will be performing at next year’s Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

Kyrah Louw (Grade 4) Kyra was awarded Western Province colours for Gymnastics u11. She will represent Western Province in Gauteng in October.

Daniel Dilgee (Grade 7) Daniel was selected to take part in the Smart Living Course at the Two Oceans Aquarium. It is an enrichment course for students with a passion for the environment and who want to make this world a better place. This course is sponsored by the City of Cape Town and only 50 Grade 7’s are selected.

Marzia Barry (Grade 11) Marzia Barry auditioned for a role in a proudly South African musical called, Calling Us Home. The top 10 finalists performed in a gala evening competition for the Calling A Star competition. Marzia won the female section of the competition and will be performing in this musical in October.

Jamandi and Machiel, better known as the “Lekker Bekkers” and the first winners of M-Net’s reality program, My Kitchen Rules. AWSUM caught up with them at their guesthouse in Bloemfontein, Solo Gracia. It is almost a year after MKR and we asked them about their schooldays, MKR, Braai day and more.

Where did you matriculate? J: Hoërskool Hartswater in the Northern Cape. M: I am an old Lantie, Hoërskool Jacobsdal Landboudal. Please tell us a bit about your childhood, what do you remember of school? J: I hated studying, but my friends and all the social events made up for all the studies. M: I will always remember the athletics, horse riding and the ‘kuiers’ in hostel rooms.

On your 10th year anniversary, you shot the last episode for My Kitchen Rules. What is your recipe for a healthy marriage? First of all, you have to be best friends and you have to have a great relationship with God. Respect one another and lots of love. Where does your love for food come from? Both of us is very social and that is where our love for entertaining people and making food came from.

How would you describe yourself as a teenager? J: I was a rebel. M: I was just naughty.

What dish would you make one another to treat him/her? J: Pork chops and mash with a can of spaghetti. It sounds terrible I know but Machiel is a bit weird. M: She loves potjiekos.

What was the first dish you learned to make as a child? J: Definitely toasted cheese, I loved it. M: If I remember correctly scramble eggs.

Any food you refuses to eat? J: Tomato sauce M: Tomato sauce

Please describe the last year after My Kitchen Rules? Our lives at the moment are very busy. Weekends we are touring with our Weber Pizza and Pop-up restaurants. During the week we try to stay home and spend time with our kids. We love every moment of our lives at this moment.

Any advice for our readers who wants to enter a reality program? Always be yourself. That is the most important lesson. People will criticise you, the media will tear you apart but always stay true to yourself.

What was the biggest lesson you learned during My Kitchen Rules? The biggest lesson was to trust your instincts and always trust one another. Stick to the recipe! And stay down to earth.

What is next for the Lekker Bekkers? We are doing another tour, maybe a recipe book, maybe a TV program, who knows?

Zwaanswyk Sports Day

On Saturday 4th August GSPS hosted Kronendal Primary School playing Hockey, Rugby and Netball from U9 – U13 age groups. Friday at our Big Brag derby day assembly leading up to Saturday we were fortunate enough to have Jaco Coetzee an Western Province player address the school on his journey and how sport has changed his life and most of all wishing the 153 players good luck for the derby day. The weather was in our favour and the day was amazing. The day consisted of 15 matches across the three codes. All the kids enjoyed the Saturday morning atmosphere, with great games being played and outstanding sportsmanship and respect from both schools. Huge thank you to all the parents from both schools that came out to support we appreciate it. As I always say, I see sport as a vehicle for many aspects in life creating friendships, relationships and most of all bringing people together. We never play against schools form the other side of town and it was a great pleasure playing against Kronendal Primary and exposing our pupils to schools they do not know.
