NOURISH THE BODY
Message fromUnion “A very warm welcome to all those participating in this year’s Cape Schools’ Cricket Week. We are delighted to be hosting the 52nd edition of this much-anticipated tournament and it is truly a privilege to welcome old friends, staff, parents and boys to our beautiful town and facilities. I trust that all involved are looking forward to five days of top-notch cricket. One of the strong values we all share is that of sportsmanship, which has always been a hallmark of this tournament. Although we are looking forward to healthy rivalry on the field over the next few days, we also hope that this tournament will be marked by fair play and new friendships formed off the field. As spectators, we are in for a real treat - supporting our children is a privilege and a joy. I trust that supporters will demonstrate a similar spirit of sportsmanship to that which we are encouraging on the field.
High School
I sincerely hope that you will enjoy Union’s warm hospitality and the beauty of the town and its surroundings. Please do not hesitate to ask our staff, should you have any queries or require assistance. I would like to extend my gratitude to each and everyone involved with the organising of this event – it is thanks to their efforts and care that the tournament’s success is ensured. Finally, to all the players: the game of cricket has always been known to be the “Gentleman’s game”. By definition, a gentleman is a brave, loyal, noble, courteous or honourable man. I sincerely believe that the behaviour of all will be in line with this definition, both on and off the field of play. Enjoy the competitiveness on the field and the relationships and friendships you build with players from other schools and above all, have fun!”

History of Cricket at
Union High School
The history of cricket at Union High School may not be as long as rugby’s, but it is equally illustrious. The game was introduced at Union in the late 1940s by headmaster Mr Herby Arnott. Having been a superior player himself, and with his firm belief in the value of cricket as an educational tool, Mr Arnott developed cricket at his school with vigor. He established playing fields of exceptional quality by persuading local farmers to donate bales of wool to the school. These were sold and the money used to build the fields. One of the founder members of the Cape Schools’ Cricket Week, Union frequently won matches against more fancied city opponents. Over the years, Union has supplied players for SA Schools, provincial and national teams.
