Refentese Morake (21) burst onto the local music scene back in 2015 after one of his street performances was recorded and shared on the internet. He grew up in Vereeniging and has been entertaining South African crowds ever since. AWSUM met up with this young talented musician.

We have to start by asking you about your school background. Please tell our readers a bit more about your school career. I was the vice-head boy at Vereeniging Gimnasium. I have to admit that the sports tours which we went on every weekend was my favourite. We met new people from different towns, and I always enjoyed travelling. My teachers would probably remember me as the kid who would constantly be performing little concerts or events for my friends. I could spend break times and all my off periods entertaining my fellow students.

Quick fire: Steri Stumpie or orange juice? Steri stumpie Springbok game live or music festival? Music festival Braai or takeaways? Braai Nike or Adidas? Adidas A nice double cab bakkie or a fast sportscar? A fast sportscar Best holiday destination? Touring through South America.

What kind of teenager would you say you were? I was a super busy teenager! I remember participating in every possible sporting and cultural event. I also really loved leadership. You grew up in Vereeniging – what made the area and the people so unique? People from Vereeniging are very down to earth and warm-hearted. Everyone’s culture and character has a place to shine. Where do you currently live, and how do you manage to balance the tour life and relaxing at home? I live in Pretoria and I see my house as my safe place where I can rest and be creative. I stay with two of my band members so we can manage to do tons of rehearsals before we go on a tour. You’ve worked with plenty of big local artists. Who is your dream local and international artist? I really admire the work of Paolo Nitini – I would love to be able to work with him one day. What do you still want to achieve as an artist? I would love to write as much and for as long as possible. What inspires you? Hard work and committing to your job! 2019 is not over yet – what is Refentse Morake planning? I simply cannot wait for the “In Afrikaans” concert taking place this December in Hartenbos.

Brugbou-span

Follow that dream

Tennis

Our production of Follow That Dream was written by Lesley Greenwood and Elmarie Hendrikse and produced by the creative and talented staff of Durbanville Preparatory School This year our production was about a group of young friends who grew up in the War years. They formed very close bonds with each other in the orphanage. They also escaped the reality of the war by disappearing into their own magical world of makebelieve and fantasy. The story goes back in time.... WAY back in time.... to an orphanage which is a safe-haven during the war years of 1918. The story is about Rosie, who is a sweet and caring young girl. Rosie always sees the bright side of life and she always helps the other orphans when they feel sad or alone. She always helps them to see the positive and happy side of life and she helps them to believe that they can be whatever they dream of being one day. Rosie has a best friend -Toby. He is a fun loving and mischievous young lad. . One day another young lad arrives.... His name is Oli. Toby and Rosie befriend Oli and he is soon one of the ‘gang’. The friends have such fun in the Secret Garden where they fight with Pirates, have adventures in Flying Cars and dance in the Lavender fields. They all have dreams for their future - Oli wants to be a doctor, Toby wants to become a pilot and Rosie wants to become a nurse.

Welgedaan, Jade!

The Orphans: Front: Betty (Jesse Nel), Oli (Jean le Roux), Toby (Kevin van der Bergh) and Lizzy (Huibrè van Zyl). Back: Rosie (Amelie Bruwer), Charlie (Duvan Marren), Matron (Olivia Adamson), Mother (Andel van Wyk).

Interact Cups for Cancer 2019

International Science Fair (ISF)

The Groote Schuur High School Interact Committee took the initiative to raise over R5000 during the month of October, to promote Breast Cancer Awareness. Every Thursday, Interact held a Cupcakes for Cancer bake sale. The cupcakes in various shades of pink and with a variety of decorations brought the crowds and over R1 300 was raised in just one 20 minute break! The next week they raised over R2 300. Interact matched the challenge they had set themselves and could proudly say that their initiative was successful.

Five RBHS Grade 10 boys represented the Cape Town region at the International Science Fair (#EskomExpoISF) in Johannesburg during the September holidays. Zuhayr Halday and André Toerien won silver medals and the Hendrik van der Bijl award for innovation. Their project on the UV opacity of school uniforms was also awarded the best Physics project. Oliver Faure, Alex White and Joel Hunt won gold medals. Oliver studied the role of depth and sunlight on marine population densities in different environments. Springbok Friday FUN!

Bergvliet learners impress at World Scholar’s Cup

This is how we do Springbok Friday at Groote Schuur Primary School. We had lots of fun and are standing right behind the Bokke! We loved supporting them in the semifinal on Sunday 27 October and wish them all the best with this upcoming Saturday’s final!

At 4.30am on Monday 23 September, a very excited group of Bergvliet Primary School learners gathered at Cape Town International Airport. A total of nine learners, accompanied by two educators and two parents, were about to set off on a wonderful trip to Durban, to participate in the Global Round of the internationally acclaimed World Scholar’s Cup. What an awesome week it was! Despite the punishing schedule, our teams acquitted themselves well, winning medals in all the significant categories. They had the opportunity to test their debating skills against learners from different countries all over the world, including the Bahamas, the USA, Norway, Turkey, the UAE, Brazil, China, Malaysia, India and many more. The competition involved debating, critical writing skills, as well as general knowledge. As we expected, the standard was very high – this made the achievements of our very own BPS learners even more special! Six of the nine learners qualified for the Tournament of Champions, to be held at Yale University in the USA in November. However, in addition to the academic aspect of the programme, the experience gave each child the chance to see themselves as part of a global community. For the adult chaperones, this was perhaps the most significant result of the Global Round: the friendships made, insights gained, and the sheer delight in finding common ground with boys and girls who live many thousands of kilometres away from Cape Town…These made for special moments, which will stay with our children forever.
