This could be you in Antarctica! Five South African students from across the country will be given a once in a lifetime experience, an allexpenses paid adventure to Antarctica. You will explore this incredible landscape while learning more about the diverse ecosystem, sustainable and conservation. HOW TO ENTER Get inspired and write a mini essay answering the following question in 100 words or more: “If saving the environment is a global problem – how can YOU help? What can you do in your own hometown that you believe will make a positive impact on the planet and possibly Antarctica?” This competition is open to all 2021 matric students in South Africa. You don’t need to be a top student, you just need to showcase your passion for conservation and the environment. All entries need to be in by 31 October 2021.
HOW ARE THE WINNERS CHOSEN? Each essay will be read by pioneering explorer Riaan Manser and his team. From there, the top 100 essays will be chosen which will then be narrowed down to the top 5. The 5 winners will be announced in January 2022 and will depart for this epic adventure in February 2022.

Sutherland High School Equestrian selected for the Gauteng A team Sutherland High School is proud to announce that Grade 10 learner, Trinity Jeffrey has been selected as part of the A Team for Equitation to represent Gauteng at the South African National Equestrian School Association (SANESA) National Championships. The Championship event will take place from 6 to 9 October 2021 at the Kyalami Equestrian Park. Equitation is where the ability of the rider to ride correctly and control the horse is judged, as opposed to the performance of the horse. We wish Trinity the best of luck and we look forward to the results.

LAERSKOOL LOUIS LEIPOLDT Landloop Die landloop seisoen het aan die begin van die derde kwartaal afgeskop met ‘n massa uitdun wedloop waaraan elke Leipie kon deelneem. Baie Leipies wou graag verder deelneem, maar ongelukkig het die sosiale afstand beperkinge gemaak dat slegs 2 atlete (2 seuns en 2 dogters) per ouderdom kan deelneem. Ons NG streek is ook verdeel in Noord en Suid groepering wat in verskillende dae deelgeneem het. Die seisoen het twee ligabyeenkomste gehad. Privaat klubs het ook leerders ingeskryf. Met ons Leipies se goeie uitslae is 18 atlete gekies om te gaan meeding by AGN. Die Noord en Suid skole het saam meegeding en slegs die eerste ses atlete is gekies vir NG span. Sewe van ons atlete is gekies om aan die SA’s te gaan deelneem. En toe kom slegte nuus – slegs atlete vanaf ouderdom o.17 mag deelneem. ‘n Week later laat weet die ASA SA’s word gedeel oor 2 dae. Atlete van o.8 - o.13 neem deel. Ons is baie trots op ons 7 Leipie atlete wat aan SA’s in Amanzimtoti gaan deelneem. Ons wens julle baie voorspoed toe. Ons spog met 3 medaljes, Lee-Hané Mienie behaal 1ste plek en Chanene Barnard kort op haar hakke met 2e plek. Arno Bester 3de plek. Mattias Kielblock 5de plek. Ellie Gruenenfelder en JC van der Bijl het albei 11de plekke en Izelle Nel 26ste.

Jaymie Meyer and her handsome horse, Laprix, competed at the Adult S.A. Championships at Stokkiesdraai. They won 4th place out of 92 competitors in the Championship class. We eagerly await to see to which new heights they will soar. Congratulations to Hannah Boulle and her bold gelding, who took 2nd place at the Gauteng Finals for Stadium Eventing. The show was held at Inanda Country Base. Furthermore, they are to be congratulated for being selected to represent Gauteng at the Stadium Eventing National Championships at Fourways Riding Centre in Timsrand.

Mentor makes dreams a reality for Curro Midrand Sagewood Learner On Tuesday, the 6th of September 2021, dreams became a reality for one exceptionally fortunate learner, Veshan Pillay, a Grade 11 learner at Curro Midrand Sagewood. On Tuesday, the 6th of September 2021, dreams became a reality for one exceptionally fortunate learner, Veshan Pillay, a Grade 11 learner at Curro Midrand Sagewood. What started as an ordinary day for him and the school, turned into a life changing, historical occasion that would forever be marked in the memory books. He was given the ultimate surprise when Headmaster Mr Johann Du Toit announced during an online assembly, presented for the entire school, that there was something in store for one, very blessed learner. Together with his parents, Mr and Mrs Pillay, Veshan was presented with the PYGA frame that was generously donated by Quinton Hughes, Director of Integralis IT Consultancy. The frame worth a whopping R60 000, a Pyga Slakline, is the bike for those riders looking to be seen on the podium steps. The SLAKLINE has been specifically designed to provide maximum traction, perfectly optimized anti-squat and brake-squat, squeezing out every ounce of fun and speed, be it up or down. His mentor Phillimon Sebona, a professional Cyclist an avid competitor for Pyga Euro Steel, who has had a successful career spanning 10 years, completing the Cape Epic multiple times, has now retired from the professional aspect of racing, and has partnered with Cycle to Ride to
mentor young cyclists with similar aspirations. He was there to make this presentation to Veshan and was thrilled to see such a motivated young man, who hopes to one day participate in Enduro, as well as downhill races.

The C2R is an initiative supported by Curro that aims to promote cycling as a medium for family cohesion, relaxation, fun, and possible career choice for those truly interested in becoming professional athletes. Through this initiative, young learners (and their parents) to their first cycling classes and this provides families with the opportunity to spend time together to connect with each other. Parents and learners don’t necessarily need any cycling experience or career aspirations to join Cycle2Ride – it’s all about having fun and the best part is that even moms even get free memberships! As a start to this wonderful ingenuity, Curro Midrand Sagewood hosted a successful cycling event on the 28th of August that was deeply enjoyed by all who attended. With Cycle to Ride and coaches like Phillimon, the school and this initiative hopes to encourage involvement in the sport and reach those who don’t have the equipment or facilities necessary to their passions to a higher or professional level. Christ Church Prep and College provincial netball selection We are very proud to announce that Elmarie Vusieka, a Grade 10 pupil at Christ Church Preparatory School and College, has been selected for the Gauteng School Sports U/16 Netball squad for 2021 and will compete in the inter provincial tournament in October. Elmarie began playing outdoor netball at the age of 7, and started indoor netball at the age of 12. Elmarie says she lives for netball, practising or playing seven days a week. She was selected to play for Christ Church College 1st Team this year. Elmarie has been involved in Junior League
Action Sports Indoor Netball, and participated in the indoor netball inter provincial tournament. She also plays club netball for the Sandton Indoor League. In addition to this, Elmarie plays Fast-5 Outdoor Netball, and this year was selected to play for the JNA (Johannesburg Netball Association) U/19 team. Elmarie’s dream is to represent South Africa. When asked what advice she can give up-and-coming netball enthusiasts, Elmarie said: “You have to put your heart and your mind into it. You have to put 100% in to get 100% out.”

Wat maak dit spesiaal om vir Hoërskool Eldoraigne se eerstespan te speel? Ek dink dit is `n groot eer om vir enige eerstespan te kan speel, maar om vir Eldoraigne se eerstespan te speel, speel jy vir meer as net die skool. Jy speel vir die gemeenskap en op die ou einde is die doel om jou skool en gemeenskap trots te maak en hulle naam hoog te hou. Wat was die sterkpunte van die span die jaar? Meeste van die mense in die span speel al van graad 8 af saam en dus het ons baie sterk verhoudings op die veld gebou en ook van die veld af. Ons span kom ook baie goed oor die weg en wil ook die beste hê vir mekaar en die skool.
Wie is die grapgat van die span en hoekom? Martin Wentzel is ons span se grapgat. Hy vind altyd `n manier om dinge lekker te maak of om jou te laat glimlag. Toere sou nie dieselfde wees as hy nie daar was nie. Wat is die lekkerste oomblik na `n wedstryd? Die lekkerste oomblik is om na die tyd net onder die boom te sit en bietjie te ontspan. Die grappe en gesprekke is vir my baie spesiaal. Wie was jou matriekheld toe jy gr 8 was? Ek het elke jaar na elke speler van die eerstespan opgekyk. By elkeen kon jy iets leer wat jy kan toepas op die hokkieveld om jou `n beter speler te maak. Ek hoop ook dat ons as span in een of ander manier die kinders wat opkyk na ons ook kan inspireer.
Wat motiveer jou om Saterdag na Saterdag jou beste op die veld te gee? Daar is baie trots wat ek ervaar as ek op die veld is en die skreeu van die skare maak dit net nog meer. Ek wil altyd seker maak dat as ek van die baan af stap dat ek weet dat ek my beste gegee het gee nie om of ons gewen of verloor het nie. Julle span kom al vyf jaar lank saam. Wat maak julle span spesiaal? Ons span is baie goeie vriende op die veld en ook van die veld af. Ons almal wil net die beste vir mekaar hê en ons het almal die selle doel in sig. Wat is julle span se grootste oomblike die afgelope 5 jaar? Ons het as `n span al baie struikelblokke oorkom en beter geword as `n span. Ons het in 2016 3de geëindig in die Tuks Reeks. Al ons jare se Classic Clash teen Zwartkop is ook `n groot oomblik elke jaar.

Dis spesiaal om vir Eldoraigne te speel, want jy weet elke keer as jy op ‘n veld opdraf, sal jou span voluit gaan tot aan die einde en nie opgee nie. Al is die kanse gewoonlik teen ons, kry dit ons nooit onder nie, so die span ís Eldoraigne en dis spesiaal om vir die span te speel.
Wat is julle span se grootste oomblik die afgelope 5 jaar? Ek dink ons tweede laaste wedstryd die seisoen teen Hoërskool Menlopark. Ons het nie vir ‘n enkele oomblik ophou baklei op die veld nie en ons het vir die skool en meer vir onsself bewys dat dit nie nodig is om terug te staan nie, maak nie saak hoe swak jou kanse mag lyk nie.
Wat was die sterkpunte van julle span die jaar? Ek dink ons sterpunte is ons “fighting spirit” en die feit dat ons ‘n groep mense is wat mekaar net aanvaar en van die dag wat die spanlys uitgekom het, het elke dame besef dat hulle vir mekaar sal speel en nie vir hulleself nie.
Wie is die grapgat in die span en hoekom? Ek sou sê dis Jani, sy het altyd een of ander opmerking wat sy maak oor enige iets en as die grap nie snaaks genoeg was nie, is haar lag na die tyd wel.
Wat motiveer jou om Saterdag na Saterdag jou beste op die veld te gee? Natuurlik die span en die afrigters. Ek speel nie vir myself nie, anders sou ek nie aan ‘n spansport deelneem nie. Ek speel vir die mense wat op my staatmaak en wat my motiveer. Hulle maak dit die moeite werd. Julle span kom al 5 jaar saam. Wat maak julle span spesiaal? Ek voel in ons span is daar soveel verskillende persoonlikhede wat net saam gegooi is en op een of ander manier werk dit net, ek kan dit nie verduidelik of verstaan nie, maar dit doen. In ons span het dit nog nooit saak gemaak wie fisies die beste speler is en wie die swakste is nie, as iemand nie die dag op daai veld was nie, kon almal die verskil voel. Ons werk net nog altyd beter saam as wat ons weet ons apart sou.
Wat is die lekkerste oomblik na `n wedstryd? Wanneer ons na ‘n wedstryd op die veld bid en weet dat dit nie saakmaak wat die telbord sê nie, want ons het alles en gegee en ons kan tevrede afstap. Wie was jou matriekheld toe jy in Gr 8/Gr.9 was? Ek het nie spesifiek ‘n held gehad nie, ek glo jy kan nie wat jy eendag wil bereik teen iemand anders se sukses meet nie. Van dag een af moet mens besef jy lewe net een keer en jy lewe dan vir die Here so dis al wat jou moet motiveer om jou beste te gee en te bereik wat jy wil.

Hoërskool Zwartkop het rede om trots te wees op hul atlete wat onlangs aan die AGN landloopkampioenskappe deelgeneem het en ook deurgedring het na die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskappe wat later vanjaar plaasvind. Vanjaar kwalifiseer slegs die beste ses atlete van elke ouderdomsgroep om Gauteng Noord by die S.A. kampioenskappe te verteenwoordig en die Zwarries spog met ses atlete wat deurdring. Die Zwarries is besonders trots op Luca de Waal, Rico Coetzer en Li-Mari Dekker wat eerste in hul onderskeie ouderdomsgroepe geëindig het. Verder is Elizma le Roux, Francois Scheepers en Wiepke Schoeman ook deel van die groep wat aan die S.A. kampioenskappe sal deelneem. Afrigter, mnr.
