Pass! Throw! Hit! Talk! Write! Cook! Act! Sing! Wha.a.at? It’s the SPAR National All Girls’ Winter Sports and Cultural Festival. The Festival kicks off at Clarendon High School at the end of April and promises to be a weekend of competition, camaraderie, spirit and sportsmanship, as well as a multiple showcase of schoolgirl talent and potential. On Friday 27 April 2018 the SPAR National All Girls’ Sports and Cultural Festival will start in East London, hosted by Clarendon High School for Girls. The Slogan for the festival, ALL GIRLS TOGETHER is apt as nineteen top All Girls’ Schools from around South Africa will arrive to compete in this the 19th Festival. The All Girls Winter Festival started back in 2000 co-hosted by Rustenberg (netball) and Wynberg (hockey). It was a fairly low key festival, but it has grown and grown to include over 20 schools, and the following disciplines will be hosted by Clarendon in 2018: Hockey, Netball, Squash, Golf, Tennis, Debating, Public Speaking, Masterchef, Chess, Vocal Ensemble, Visual Arts, Creative Writing and Drama. An exciting programme starting on Saturday 28 April and ending on Monday 30 April is anticipated, and sees many experts from around the country involved in the various disciplines. Deon Nel, the South African TV Hockey umpire who attended the Rio Olympics last year heads up the Referees for the Hockey section, whilst Old Girl Zoya Mabuto, National Toastmasters Winner will give a workshop to the Creative Writing girls, and judge the Public Speaking competition. Despite being a festival, defending champions in certain disciplines will be keen to show their prowess again in 2018, especially Meisieskool Oranje who won the Hockey, Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool who won Netball, Queenstown Girls’ High will defend the squash title, Eunice the Chess, and Parktown Girls’ the Debating competition. The Principal of Clarendon Girls High School, Miss Pat Rose, is delighted to host this prestigious All Girls event and will declare the Festival open at the Official Opening Ceremony on Friday evening. We thank SPAR Eastern Cape for sponsoring the Festival and look forward to a weekend of friendship, fun and loads of healthy competition. SPAR as a brand with their values of passion and family fit superbly with this National event. The SMILE Foundation is the chosen CSR Partner for the Festival. There will be a strong recycling drive during the Festival with the Clarendon Enviro Club fully involved in the Festival ensuring all participants recycle, reduce and reuse. All will be encouraged to hand in uneaten food packs and not to throw food in rubbish bins. This food will be distributed to charity organisations in East London. The Festival will move to Paarl in 2019 and be co - hosted by La Rochelle Girls’ High and Paarl Girls’ High School.

To all Principals, Coaches and Participants A warm WELCOME to East London. Thank you for joining us at Clarendon Girls’ High School as we celebrate the 19th “All Girls” Festival, ALL GIRLS TOGETHER. Let us begin by paying tribute to the founders of this amazing National All Girls’ Schools’ Winter Sport and Cultural Festival and to all participating schools that have contributed towards making this a national showcase of talent and spirit - an important event on the calendar. This festival has grown tremendously over the years, but has retained the original ethos and character, that of a high level of competition, excellent sportsmanship, camaraderie and fun. The founder of the modern Olympic Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin said, “The most important thing...is not winning, but taking part, just as the most important thing in life is not the victory, but the struggle; it is not to have vanquished, but to have fought well.” As you participate in your activity/sport remember that “It’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game”. Have fun, represent your school with pride and make many new friends along the way. We have taken the lead from Beyond# (AHMP) and continued with the App set up in 2017 that will enable everyone to follow the events of the day and to be a part of all aspects of the Festival. This year the Festival Charity Campaign will benefit the Smile Foundation and you are encouraged to give generously to this worthy cause chosen by SPAR and Clarendon. In addition, we invite you to place unwanted food from lunch or supper packs into the containers provided at all venues. This will be donated to those in need. All Girls Together can make a significant contribution towards recycling. Help us to make a difference to our oceans and sea-life by encouraging the responsible disposal of plastic. Please use the re-cycling bins provided at all venues to make a significant contribution to this cause. An event of this magnitude is just not possible without sponsors and a great deal of assistance from staff, parents and the community. We are privileged to have SPAR as our main sponsor this year and a special word of thanks must go to Mr Alan Stapleton for his assistance. Thanks to ALL sponsors for the contributions received that have gone a long way towards making the Festival a success. We are grateful to Selborne College for the use of their facilities and to all umpires, referees and adjudicators who have given us the benefit of their expertise. A special word of thanks must go to the Clarendon organizing committee, staff team and girls, led by Mrs Charne Jeacocks, Mrs Kerry Voke and Mrs Julie Patrick. An enormous amount of preparation has gone into the yearlong organization of this Festival – and this team has worked energetically and tirelessly. May you make special memories and return to your schools enriched by having taken part in what is truly a very special event. Patricia Rose Principal
