AWSUM Celebrity Interview Duane Vermeulen Daniel Johannes ‘Duane’ Vermeulen was born on 3 July 1986 and matriculated at Hoërskool Nelspruit. From there on his professional rugby career ran through the Pumas (2005–2007), the Cheetahs (2007–2008) and the Stormers (2009–2015), up to Toulon in France, where he is currently on contract. Duane plays his first of 35 test matches (up to the end of 2015) on 8 September 2012 against Australia. In 2014 he was nominated as one of five players for the IRB Player of the Year award. As the iron man of South African rugby, Duane is respected as a world-class player locally and internationally. AWSUM News caught up with him to find out how life in France is treating him.
1.
Q How do you experience life in France?
5.
A Like any new place, France has its things to adapt to. Language, culture and food are some of the biggest things to get used to.
2.
Q Tell us more about Toulon. A Toulon is a smallish city in the south of France, that had its origins as a military harbour. The city is known today for shipbuilding, fish and wine, and of course also the rugby team. People here are crazy for RC Toulon and it hardly ever happens that our stadium is not packed. V
Hoe vergelyk die rugbystrukture tussen
Q How do the rugby structures between 3. Toulon en die Toulon andStormers? the Stormers compare?
A Both are extremely successful professional units. Because one works with much younger players in South Africa, much more time is spent here on development at club level.
4.
Q How long did it take you to learn to speak French? A I’ll tell you as soon as I’ve mastered it!
Page 2
AWSUM NEWS JUNE 2016
Q Do you manage to braai sometimes in France? A The meat here is top quality and with the sun setting so late, it makes for perfect braai conditions.
6.
Q How do the French differ from South Africans? A I think that South Africans generally adapt quite well to France. The French can sometimes be a bit emotional and carry on about stuff, but for the rest, they are passionate people who love their country and their culture.
7.
Q What do you miss the most about life in South Africa? A One always misses one’s friends and family the most.
8.
Q Do you plan to play in South Africa again in the Super Rugby series? A It is difficult to know exactly what the future holds. For now, I have a job to do for Toulon and goals to achieve. Who knows what lies in wait after that.
FOR THE FOODIES
Sizzling soups Brrr. The cold is finally really here to stay! Temperatures are dropping, socks are getting thicker and you’re suddenly finding you need an extra blanket on your bed at night. Winter is here, and it brings with it more time snuggled up indoors, endless cups of tea and, of course, bowls of steaming soup. There’s no better side for soup than fresh bread, so here’s a round-up of six super soups and the perfect bread sides to accompany them. Cheeky broccoli and cheese
Soup: Broccoli and cheese are a heavenly match, and this is a good way to disguise healthy green vegetables if your family aren’t mad about them. Fry half an onion in a little oil until soft. Add two cups of broccoli, a litre of chicken or vegetable stock and a tin of evaporated milk. Boil until the broccoli is soft, then add a cup of grated cheddar cheese. Blend until smooth. Side: Mix softened butter with grated lemon zest, then spread onto toasted low GI brown bread. Serve with the broccoli soup and enjoy.
whip up this soup for almost nothing. Fry one onion a little oil, then add chopped carrots, celery and courgettes. Add two tablespoons of tomato paste and two cups of vegetable stock to the mixture. Bring to the boil, then add two cups of short pasta (macaroni, penne, fusilli or shells) and cook until the pasta is al dente. Side: To serve with the soup, cut slices of toaster white bread into cubes, sprinkle with olive oil and salt, then roast in the oven until crispy. Sprinkle the homemade croutons into noodle soup just before serving – scrumptious!
Smoky bacon and bean
Creamy mushroom
Soup: The best thing about this soup is that you can make it with items from your kitchen cupboard or freezer. Simply fry a few rashers of chopped bacon until crispy. Add a tin of Italian tomato and onion mix and a tin of butter beans. Side: Make herbed garlic butter by mixing together soft butter, one chopped garlic clove and some dried herbs. Spread this mixture onto slices of low GI white bread and then grill until crispy and golden. Dunk the garlic bread into the soup for a hearty meal that’ll warm anyone up from the inside.
Tummy-filling sweetcorn
Soup: This soup is a great way to use up leftover roast chicken pieces. Fry two chopped potatoes and one onion in a little butter, then add a tin each of creamed sweetcorn and whole kernel corn (drained). Add a can of cream of chicken soup, a dash of milk and any leftover chicken, chopped into small pieces. Side: While the soup bubbles away, toast a few slices of low GI crushed wheat brown bread, top with grated parmesan and grill until the cheese has melted into the bread. Serve the soup when the potatoes are completely soft, with a healthy portion of parmesan toasts.
Hearty veggie noodle
Soup: If you have odds and ends of vegetables in your fridge, you can
Soup: This soup couldn’t be simpler and it works for a laid-back dinner party starter. Fry two punnets of sliced mushrooms, one chopped onion and three cloves of chopped garlic in melted butter until all the mushrooms are brown and tender. Add two cups of fresh cream and a cup of vegetable or chicken stock, simmer for five minutes, then turn off the heat. Side: Cut slices of toaster brown bread into ‘soldiers’, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with brown onion soup powder, and bake until completely crispy. The brown onion soup gives them a salty, savoury flavour. Serve with the hot mushroom soup and top with a dollop of sour cream, if you have some.
Meaty lasagne soup Soup: If your family loves lasagne, they’ll adore this twist on the classic pasta dish. Fry mince with one onion and a chopped carrot until golden brown, then add two tins of chopped tomatoes and simmer. Add two cups of beef stock and a cup of elbow macaroni. Cook until the pasta is soft. Side: Toast three pieces of sliced white bread, then whizz in a blender until a chunky crumb is formed. Fry the crumbs in a little olive oil with some dried herbs, until crispy. Use these crunchy breadcrumbs to top the lasagne soup.

GLENWOOD PREPARATORY SCHOOL (t) 031 201 5165 (e) enquiries@glenwoodprep.co.za Glenwood Prep The Glenwood Preparatory School 1st XV rugby team continued with their successful season, after a closely fought encounter with their D.P.H.S counterparts. A large crowd watched this top primary school rugby fixture at D.P.H.S, and were entertained by some excellent running rugby by the two evenly matched teams. At the final whistle, Glenwood Prep emerged as worthy 29-24 winners over a gallant D.P.H.S team.

MORNINGSIDE PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 031 303 2413 (e) mornpri@mweb.co.za Fun, Food and Fare Morningside Primary recently held its annual Food Fair and it was a tremendous success. Parents and teachers spent many hours sourcing materials and organising their stalls till eventually the Big Day dawned. It was a wonderful sunny morning and everything went as planned. South Africa, America, China, Great Britain, Germany, Mexico and India all came to the party, as well as a plethora of games for the kids. A tea garden was made available for those who wanted to take morning or afternoon tea. The festivities were scheduled to commence at 9am, but a lot of eager beavers arrived far earlier than this and many “unofficial” sales occurred long before this time. The day scuttled along with hordes of children and parents standing in lines to sample the wares of the different destinations or participate in the games or obstacle courses that were on offer. Before anyone realised, it was time to close shop. It was wonderful to see the parents work hand in hand with staff. They were amazing and helped turn the affair into the success that it would eventually become.
