AWSUMCelebrity Interview
KAHN & The Parlotones The Parlotones is one of South Africa’s most loved and successful bands, with multi-platinum album status and major international acclaim and fans. Lead singer and songwriter Kahn Morbee’s lyrics focus on personal themes of love and everyday life, paired with catchy melodies that engage their audience. Formed in 1998, the group consists of Kahn (vocals and rhythm guitar), Paul Hodgson (lead guitar), Glenn Hodgson (bass guitar, keyboards and backing vocals) and Neil Pauw (drums and percussion). AWSUM News caught up with Kahn and the band whilst on their countrywide tour ‘The Stories Behind the Songs’.
Paul, Kahn, Glenn and Neil
Q: Many of your lyrics have multiple layers of meaning. Tell us about the new show, the title of which is very intriguing and seems to talk to your lyrics. A: ‘The Stories Behind the Songs’ tour is part of a book that we are working on, in which each band member shares a memory of every single album we have done from the start. The book will be in coffee table format, with loads of photos and wonderful stories.
Q What was your earliest success, when you considered yourself to be ‘on the map’? A Our first album launch. It was very exciting and we felt a sense of accomplishment for something we’d dreamt of. Our first award was also a proud moment, because it meant approval and kind of eradicated a lot of doubt and gave us a belief and confidence in ourselves.
Q: What was the inspiration for the concept of the book and the show? A: Creating music that resonates with our fans is something that we are very proud of and we are looking forward to sharing the method behind our madness when it comes to the processes and ideas behind constructing each and every song, be it the different paths in life we have travelled, to the experiences and adventures. We are enjoying sharing these stories with our fans across the country.
Q Tell us a bit about your international footprint. A We have toured internationally since 2007, spending months on the road in the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and North America. We have also toured in South America, Canada, Australia, Japan and Russia, and have shared the stage with Coldplay, Starsailor, Snow Patrol, Live, Ash, Razorlight, Blue October, Violent Femmes, Imagine Dragons, and many more.
Q: Kahn, how did your iconic show make-up happen? A: A couple of years ago we did a show at a cosmopolitan party and we played with eight other bands. We wanted to stand out and be remembered, so I applied the make-up and it has been a hit ever since. Q: How did The Parlotones happen? A: We started jamming as a garage band in 1998. We can’t believe that we have been jamming together for 16 years already! We feel like family members. Q: Kahn, you have embarked on a solo career as well. How did that come about? A: I thought it was time to start working on my own unique sound, but I’m still involved with The Parlotones (before people start worrying!). I am known only as Kahn for my solo performances and am pursuing a more introspective, personal approach to my craft. Q: What were some highlights of the journey as The Parlotones? A: One of our favourite memories of the early years was when the band performed at the Coca-Cola Dome in 2009. We became the first South African band to sell out at the Dome, with about 13 000 fans attending that show. Another proud moment was when we performed at the opening concert of the 2010 FIFA World Cup with famous artists like The Black Eyed Peas and Shakira.

Q What are your aspirations as a band? A We have always aspired not only to have fun making music, but also to give back to our community. Over the years, we have raised funds and awareness for a variety of social and environmental organisations, such as Earth Hour amd Nelson Mandela’s 46664. We are also ambassadors for the anti-poaching organisation Rhino Force and several other nonprofits that combat problems that acutely affect South Africa. Q Kahn, your songwriting prowess and stage presence has garnered you a huge fan base. How do you keep inspired? A On stage, I remind myself that I’ve been blessed to be able to do what I love and I need to show the audience that. Wether it’s 40 or 40 000 people. I think that I kind of take on an alter ego when I perform because I want people to feel, experience a certain exhibition that a performer displays. It’s like a quick fix of freedom before the trappings of real life re-emerge. It’s a fix for me and hopefully the audience as well. I may not take everyone on that journey, but I hope to take some. I love biographies because real-life stories of people help me relate that to my life and inspire me. I love books on science, arts, philosophy, religion, belief systems, economics and politics, because they all try to explain our existence from a different perspective and I find it fascinating. I believe the arts – whether it be literature, art, music, film or poetry – try to do the same as the above, but in a condensed form. It suggests a line of thought but allows its audience to subscribe to its own interpretation.

Nuts about Butternut!!!
by Jenny Morris @jennymorrischef
The one vegetable I love eating all year round is butternut, but I especially love it in winter. It says comfort to me. You can use it in so many ways: roasted with rosemary, a touch of salt and sugar and extra virgin olive oil; in soups, mashed with lashings of butter; it is great as a stuffing for cannelloni; great in risotto, fritters, or raw in salads – you can have your way in so many ways with butternut! The way to choose the perfect butternut is to look for one with a nice long neck and small bottom. Butternut squash seeds are tasty and are eaten as nutritious snack food since they contain 35–40% oil and 30% protein, so don’t throw them away – roast them and eat them. The butternut itself I’m told is low in calories, with 100g providing just 45 calories – that makes me happy, as it means I can eat lots of it. (My problem is I lash it with butter, so there goes the low calorie count ...). It is also a wonderful vegetable for your skin because it of its extremely high vitamin A content, and great for your hair too. There are also significant amounts of vitamin C, E, K, B6, folate and thiamine found in butternut. So let’s eat it – come and cook with me.
Let’s Cook!!
Roasted butternut cheesecake with burnt sage butter Serves 6 – 8 When cooking with sage be sure to choose nice fleshy leaves, firm green stalks and definitely not a sign of wilting or blemishes. It will be even more delicious if you pick it just before you need to use it. The base • 150 g savoury biscuit crumbs • 100 g melted butter • 1 teaspoon chopped rosemary needles The filling • 500 g peeled butternut cubes
• 2 teaspoons olive oil • 2 teaspoons rosemary needles • salt • pepper • 1 teaspoon brown sugar • 2 eggs, beaten • 1 cup cream • 300 g ricotta cheese • 1 cup grated mature cheddar cheese • ¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg • 2 cloves crushed garlic Burnt sage butter sauce • 100 g butter • 15 fresh fleshy sage leaves
• To prepare the base, mix the crumbs, butter and rosemary together. Press the mixture into a 20 cm spring-form baking tin, and set till firm in the fridge. • Make the filling next. Preheat the oven to 180 °C. Toss the butternut with the olive oil, rosemary, salt, pepper and sugar, and roast till tender – about 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside. • Blend together the eggs, cream, ricotta, cheddar, nutmeg and garlic, and spoon over the biscuit base. Bake at 180 °C until set – approximately 35 to 40 minutes. • Just before the cheesecake is ready to come out of the oven, prepare the sage butter sauce. Heat the butter in a pan until it begins to foam. Add the sage and cook until the butter starts to go nutty and brown, and the leaves are crisp. • Serve the cheesecake warm with some burnt sage butter, or cold with a large green salad.

WESTVILLE SENIOR PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 031 266 5218 (e) sharon@wsps.co.za Golf Team We at Westville Senior Primary School are super proud of our Junior Golf Team. The team did extremely well in the Ernie Els Primary School Competition, in which eight schools and nine teams participated. As from beginning 2016, golf has become a school sport at WSPS. We then joined hands with the KwaZulu-Natal Golf Union Junior section to create a league between other primary schools on a similar basis to the high school league, which prepares our scholars for golf at high school and further in life. The Ernie Els competition is specifically aimed at junior and senior primary schools throughout South Africa and eliminations are held per province. Participants must be 13 or younger and attend either junior or senior primary school. The two top teams per province advance to the national event in August. The eliminator for KZN was played on Monday, 27 March at Royal Durban Golf Club and the WSPS team came second and qualified for the next round to be played at Randpark Golf Club in August 2017. This was a very proud day for our players/teachers/parents/ grandparents and families.

DURBAN HIGH SCHOOL (t) 031 277 1500 (e) marketing@durbanhighschool.co.za New Head Master for Durban High School The much anticipated appointment of the new Head of Durban High School has been announced by the Department of Education. The school’s 15th Head Master will be Mr Tony Pinheiro, who is seen by many as one of South Africa’s leading high school educationists. Mr Pinheiro takes up his new appointment at the beginning of the second term. Mr Pinheiro began his teaching career in 1992 and joined Glenwood High School in April 1994. As the Senior Deputy Principal at Glenwood High, he has been the Acting Principal of Glenwood High since February 2016. DHS Governing Body Chairman, Mr Winston Owen, commented on the fact that despite Mr Pinheiro having spent 23 years at our “rival” school, his laudable track record speaks for itself. Not only did he do a great job as Acting Head at both Brettonwood and Glenwood, but he was also responsible, as Deputy for Glenwood, for introducing the Advanced Academic programme to Glenwood which led to them being licensed by Cambridge University to run the Cambridge programme, enabling matriculants to have easier access to top overseas universities.” Mr Owen continued, “Tony Pinheiro has palpable leadership energy. He is a futurist and a visionary, but understands the importance of the traditional values of a great school like DHS. Through the selection process, it became clear to us that he was the right person to lead this fine school with a great history, into a magnificent future.” Mr Pinheiro is an avid reader and accomplished chess player and enjoys both travel and sport. He was the 1st XV Rugby and 1st XI Cricket coach at Glenwood for a number of years and also helped to structure and introduce the High Performance
Programme to the school, beneficiaries of which include the likes of Protea all-rounder Andile Phehlukhwayo. He has a Bachelor of Education (Honours Degree) and is known to have a particular interest in Educational Management and Law, as well as Sociological trends. A special assembly was held at the School on Wednesday, 19 April, at which Mr Owen as Chairman of the Governing Body thanked Mr Alan Norton for being Acting Head Master before officially introducing Mr Pinheiro to the staff and boys. This was a significant moment in the history of the School as a warm DHS welcome was extended to Mr Pinheiro, the 15th Head Master in the 151 year history of Durban High School. Mr Pinheiro addressed the young men and staff of Durban High School. He emphasised his deep-seated belief in the importance of values and principles and shared that his vision for the school was to return it to being the top school in South Africa. In addition, he mentioned the significance of traditional boys’ schools and that every young boy should understand what it is to be a ‘real man’. He highlighted that each and every learner should have a deep respect for the teaching profession and value their teachers. He then left the young men with a number of quotes, one being “You make a choice and your choice makes you.” Mr Pinheiro ended the Assembly stating that he was honoured to serve as the new Head Master of Durban High School.
DHS Rugby Day Durban High School hosted their Rugby Day last week. The results were as follows: • George Campbell 12 – Kloof 12 • Hilton 34 – Clifton 5 • Glenwood 56 – Voortrekker 7 • Durban High School 36 – Port Natal 3
Thomas Kempen (DHS Deputy Head Boy), Phendulani Buthelezi (DHS Head Boy), Tony Pinheiro, Winston Owen (DHS Governing Body Chairman), Matthew Henley (DHS Deputy Head Boy) and Samkelo Ntetha (Chairman of the RCL).

2017 World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships The 2017 World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships were hosted by Ravenswood School for Girls in Sydney, Australia from 7 to 12 April. Matt Glasspool (Form VI) participated in this prestigious competition. He was one of a few South Africans who participated in this competition. Matt was placed second in the World Champion Debate section and placed 16th overall in the world. Participants had to compete in four categories: • Impromptu Speaking • Prepared Speaking • Interpretive reading • Debating
Connor Allan (Form VI) has been elected the Glenwood Representative Council of Leaners (RCL) Chairman. The RCL has a high profile in the school. Each learner votes for their class representative to represent their class at meetings held every Tuesday and Thursday along with all the other class representatives from all Forms. This meeting is then run by the Chairman. In the meetings they discuss any issues that the boys have and what they want to do in the future. Any complaints or issues that are spoken about in the meeting, the Chairman will then discuss it with the Headmaster and come up with a plan going forward. The goal this year is to try make it a better place for the learners as well as try get involved with charities.
The pupils had been preparing by selecting topics and perfecting their prepared speeches. For the debates, participants were told the topic just minutes before having to present their arguments.
World Schools’ Debating Championships Connor Montague has been selected as a member of Team SA A Green. This team will be coached by David Harris and together they will be attending the Asian World Schools' Debating Championships from 24 to 28 July in Bangkok, Thailand. The cost of the trip is R36 000. The SASDB has made the decision that students attending schools such as Glenwood are in a position to subsidise students from rural areas and schools with few resources, thus R12 000 of the R36 000 is used to subsidise the eight students in the SA team that are from rural areas and schools with few resources. Connor will be doing fundraising to pay for his tour and would appreciate any form of assistance.

Just Cause 3 is an open world action-adventure video game developed by Avalanche Studios and published by Square Enix. Set six years after its predecessor, Just Cause 3 follows series protagonist Rico Rodriguez as he returns to his birthplace of Medici, a fictional Mediterranean republic under the brutal control of dictator General Sebastiano Di Ravello. The game is played from a third-person view and allows players to explore the island of Medici in an open-ended environment. Just Cause 3 received generally positive reviews; critics praised the open-ended gameplay, the game’s destruction mechanics and promotion of player agency, while criticism was directed at the game’s narrative, which was considered clichéd and uninspired, and many noted the performance issues, particularly on the console versions of the game.
