AWSUM Celebrity Interview
National Braai Day & Braai Tour
Q How did the whole National Braai Day initiative come about? A We love to braai, about that there is no argument. As a nation, we are united like no other time on National Braai Day. We share stories, relax, unwind, reflect and just enjoy the country that has given us the opportunity to burn large quantities of braai wood. And in 2017, there is more than one opportunity to unite around a fire. Q Why is National Braai Day such a huge success with the South African public? A Of the 12 South African public holidays, there is no denying that the most eagerly anticipated each year is National Braai Day. Without a doubt, it is the most fun and stress-free way to spend a public holiday; there is no pressure to run an ultra marathon, there are no expectations for Christmas presents, and the timing is such that National Braai Day, while being the perfect opportunity to unite around the fire, also heralds the start of summer. Q Tell us a bit more about the history of National Braai day since it started over 10 years ago. A For over 10 years National Braai Day has lead the way in getting South Africans together, pulling the country closer with the pastime that is available to all: braaiing. Lighting a fire is in our blood, prodding coals is innate, and standing in circles around the flame comes as instinctively as kicking World Cup-winning drop goals. Since the dawn of time, South Africans have gathered in groups to cook on an open flame, and now National Braai Day has come to represent our national unity around the fire. Q What is special about this year’s National Braai Day? A Thanks to National Braai Day falling on a Sunday this year, there is a whole Saturday at your disposal to prepare for the country’s greatest public holiday. Inspired by the Dutch holiday of King’s Night ahead of King’s Day, we encourage all South Africans to take part in National Braai Night the evening before National Braai Day. This is the chance for the braaiers of South Africa to get into the Braai Day groove early. It’s the party braai to National Braai Day’s relaxing braai. Q But wait, there’s more to the braai movement – just before National Braai Day, you and a 200-strong travelling carnival will also be touring the country as part of the National Braai Tour. What happens during this tour? A Think of it as a political rally ahead of an election, only we are not canvassing for votes, we’re calling on millions of South Africans to unite around fires and celebrate our heritage. Now in its fifth year, the National Braai Tour acts as a smokey, flame-grilled messenger for National Braai Day, with participants of the Tour spreading braai cheer throughout the country and ramping up public excitement for our country’s fast-approaching biggest day of braai. The 2017 edition of the Braai Tour starts in Cape Town on 10 September and will stop in at iconic venues like Cape Agulhas, Calitzdorp, Plettenberg Bay and Storms River before culminating in Port Elizabeth. Q What is the purpose of the National Braai Tour? A It is all about showcasing our vision of nation-building around a fire. A blueprint of sorts on how to best celebrate heritage month and Heritage Day. It’s about bringing diverse people together to enjoy the one thing that unites us all, cooking and celebrating around an open fire. It’s also an opportunity to build public excitement and momentum towards 24 September in a way that gets South Africans thinking about and celebrating their own heritage, our shared heritage, and how great it is to be a South African.

Epic scenery, road-tripping adventure, earlymorning coffee in the great outdoors, stunning campsites and more braais than you can shake a stukkie wors at – there can be nothing more South African than the annual National Braai Tour, the perfect starter ahead of National Braai Day, as organised by the iconic Jan Braai. We caught up with Jan as he and his 200-strong cavalcade set off on the National Braai Tour.
Q How successful has the National Braai Tour been? A Now into its fourth year, the National Braai Tour continues to go from strength to strength and from iconic location to iconic location. It’s growing like a braaiwood pyramid and is the ultimate build-up – a perfect prologue – to the now widely celebrated National Braai Day, which takes place on 24 September every year. Q How does the National Braai Tour actually work? A As always, the route has been selected to take in the diversity of the South African countryside and to showcase historically significant spots along the way. The aim of the National Braai Tour is for participants to enjoy themselves, but also to learn more about this great country. This year, the National Braai Tour started in Cape Town with a convoy heading out of the Mother City and onto the N2. Once over Sir Lowry’s Pass, the Tour headed to Struisbaai for a fresh local seafood braai before calling it a night at the Southern Tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas, where steaks were braaied. In fact, this occured nightly, because steaks are braaied every night on the National Braai Tour. As the journey to Port Elizabeth continued, the National Braai Tour visited locations like Calitzdorp Spa (yes, there was a special port tasting), Oudtshoorn, SANParks Wilderness, Forever Resort SA at Keurbooms, SANParks Storms River, and finally The Willows Campsite in Nelson Mandela Bay. Before setting off every morning, participants were treated to freshly braaied roosterkoek and barista-made coffee. That provided the strength and stamina required for a solid day of ‘educational tourism’ - and braaiing. Among the many heritage sights en route, the National Braai Tour visited the Cango Caves, Nelson’s Bay Cave at Robberg Nature Reserve, Bloukrans Bridge, Nelson Mandela Heritage Walk and the largest South African flag in the world at the Donkin Reserve in Port Elizabeth. In the evenings it was be live music and braaiing – with recipes and food provided – while uniting around a campfire. Q Why do participants have to have South African flags? A At registration each participant is issued with a full-size South African flag on an individual sized pole. These flags are carried by participants at all times. It’s the rainbow wave of the Tour. Q What do you take away from this year’s National Braai Tour (in a nutshell)? A It was once again an insightful journey of sightseeing splendour, campfire cordon bleu and essential learnings into the wide and varied heritage of South Africa. Q What is the role of National Braai Day and the National Braai Tour in our country? A They are reminders that we as inhabitants of such a wonderfully diverse country have something in common. Our country has a rich and diverse heritage and this needs to be celebrated. But it is essential to share one thing, and that one thing just happens to be the nation’s love for cooking food over the coals of a fire. We have much to celebrate as a nation and as diverse people. What better way to do that than with a Tour that teaches you about our collective heritage, your fellow South Africans and a day that encourages you to celebrate around a fire. Q You are the first AWSUM celebrity to appear on our cover twice – congrats! What do you make of that? A That is really AWSUM – and says a lot about our love for the braai! Thank you – I look forward to more.

Bacon & Cider Roosterkoek
WHAT YOU NEED (makes 8)
• 1 packet bacon (250 g of your favourite type) • 1 small packet self-raising flour (500 g) • 1 tsp salt • 1 tot olive oil • 1 bottle cider
WHAT YOU DO 1. Either braai the bacon on a grid over coals until crisp or fry it in a pan until crisp. Remove from the heat, let it cool down and chop into small pieces. 2. To your favourite mixing bowl add the self-raising flour, salt and crispy braaied chopped-up bacon. Mix this using one of your recently washed hands. 3. Add the olive oil and cider. Using one or both of your recently washed hands, mix and knead everything together. You do not need to overdo this step. Be lazy and knead as little as possible; as soon as everything is properly combined you’re good to go. 4. Use your hands and on a flat surface, shape this stretchy piece of dough into a flat rectangle or square as well as you can manage. Now use a sharp knife and cut the dough into 8 or 9 equal portions. Fix the shape of each one slightly and you’re done. Using extra flour to dust the dough throughout this process makes it infinitely easier to deal with. 5. Braai on a grid over medium-heat coals for about 15 to 20 minutes. It is important to turn the roosterkoek often, so that they do not burn, but get cooked through. The outside should be crispy and ever so slightly charred here and there, and the inside obviously done. If there is a hollow sound when you tap them, they are ready. Insert a sharp knife into one and if it comes out clean, you know for a fact that they are ready. 6. Serve warm with butter and cheese or with any braaied meat.
I am a massive fan of roosterkoek and the culinary giants bacon and cider also make regular appearances at my braai fire. Together, they will change the way you look at roosterkoek forever. The word ‘roosterkoek’ is Afrikaans for a bread roll baked on your grid over the coals of a wood fire. To my mind, the word is part of common language in South Africa and can de facto be used in all 11 official languages. Everything about this recipe is great – few ingredients, a very easy process and a fantastic tasting result. As it happens, these roosterkoek go very well with any type of braaied meat.

Chocolate Fondant Potjie Pudding There is a medical reason why you should eat chocolate. The scent of the chocolate increases theta brain waves, which induces relaxation. We all know how vitally important it is to destress, relax and feel good about your life. And this is why you and your loved ones should consume the baked chocolate potjie as often as possible. It will make you a better person.
WHAT YOU NEED
WHAT YOU DO
(feeds 8)
1. Make the batter, part 1: In your no. 10 flat-bottomed baking potjie, whisk the egg and then use your wooden spoon and mix the butter, milk and vanilla with the whisked egg. 2. Make the batter, part 2: Now mix the flour, cocoa, salt, sugar and chopped chocolate pieces into the wet mixture of step 1. Just use the sugar and cocoa specified as ingredients for the batter, not the sugar and cocoa for the sauce, which only comes in the next step. Everything needs to be mixed properly so use a wooden spoon and put in some effort. If you’re unfit get one of your friends or family members to help you, or buy yourself a cordless stick blender (it changed my life). 3. Make the sauce: Stir the sugar, cocoa powder and boiling water together until all the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is smooth. Slowly pour this hot cocoa-sugar-water mixture over the dough mixture that is already in the pot. 4. Bake: Put the lid on the potjie and bake for 25 minutes by placing coals under the pot and a lot of coals on the lid of the pot. Your work of art is ready when the top is firm to the touch. 5. Serve with fresh cream or ice cream.
For the batter • 1 egg • 3 tots butter (melted) • ½ cup milk • ½ tot vanilla essence • 1 cup self-raising flour • 1 tot cocoa powder • pinch of salt • ½ cup sugar • 2 small slabs dark chocolate (80 g each, broken into blocks)
For the sauce • 1½ cups brown sugar • 2 tots cocoa powder • 1½ cups boiling water
To serve • fresh cream or ice cream

I’M LOVING… Off-the-shoulder anything because it’s the instant way to update and add a dash of flirty flair to your wardrobe. If Kendall Jenner likes to live in this bareshoulder look, so can we. Enjoy!

Model of the moment, Gigi Hadid, is totally into off-the shoulder tops worn with jeans, her fave down time look.
Are you ready to show off some muscles? Muscle tank tops are set to be the top style squad trend for the hot season ahead. Even if you’re not a fitness freak you can still be a cool dude in this trendy tank top. It’s really a vest but has morphed into a pared-down T with “breezy” armholes that’s comfy and easy to wear anytime. Find a good balance between too loose and too tight --- the new slim fit option is just perfect because you don’t want flapping arm holes! To get the look right, stick with tank tops that fall just below your belt loops or waistband of your shorts so you can let your arms breathe without showing off your six pack, nice as it is. Keep that for the beach or pool…
Hey man! Rapper Tyga proves you don’t have to look like The Rock to rock a muscle vest.
HEY MR MUSCLE!
HOW TO BE HOT AND G IVE EVERYO THE COLD S NE H O U L D E R Every new season everyone is
obsessed with the new trends and if you’re not seen wearing them, you are virtually fashion road kill. So wait for it --- this sunny season it’s all about the off-theshoulder/cut-out shoulder look. Get ready to flaunt your bare shoulders in pretty off-theshoulder tops with voluminous, ruffled sleeves or ruched and elasticised necklines that hug the bottom of your shoulder blades and shoulder cutouts with bra straps. Exposed shoulders are the coolest way to show some skin. And the good news --- unlike other bits of the bod, they always look OK. We might be flooded with shoulder-baring looks right now but guess what, this “new” look has been around on-and-off the scene since the 1960’s when legendary French actress Brigitte Bardot put her own sassy spin on this fashion icon that has survived to become today’s jet set style. So go girl, go!

DRAW A LINE
All eyes on Spring! Eyeliner is the big focus but with a twist… The look is graphic and OTT in brilliant blues and greens that make it impossible for anyone to look away from you. Celebs and social media stars are besotted with this unexpected and fun pop of colour for eyes. The key is to keep the rest of your makeup subtle and centered around the look with eyelids clean. Forget picture-perfect straight lines. The new liner look is all about free expression, bold shades and artistic strokes. You just need to draw a line and then let your imagination go. There are no rules, so whether your line-drawing skills are like a budding Picasso or more like a jumpy spider, you can frame your eyes with zany lines that say it all. You can also exaggerate the look with toning shadows that echo the liner so you get a 3-D look –-- totes eyecatching. Who could resist you? Why not go all-out like the runway models and play up your eyebrows as well – just sweep your liner along the curve of your brow and in your eye crease for a lavish linear look. * All prices are correct at time of going to print. GLENWOOD PREPARATORY SCHOOL (t) 031 201 5165 (e) enquiries@glenwoodprep.co.za Debating Report 2017 A season full of reading, researching and asking questions, led to a challenging, but successful Debating League this year! GPS was assigned the privilege of co-ordinating the Durban Primary Schools Debating League for 2017. Fifteen schools in the local area debated against each other in, what proved to be, challenging and exciting debates. The two teams of Grade 6 and 7 even pupils, who were selected from GPS to participate this year, are Nosipho Thabede (captain), Kelsey Pattinson (vice-captain), Hena Gordhan, Bianca Rich, Kian Rama, Connor Julius, Emir Khan and Zara Lalljee. The three debating topics this year were: • This house supports detention as a form of punishment • This house supports pay beaches for Durban • This house believes that superheroes are good role models for children Our two teams performed very well, and each debate was won by either one or both of our teams that debated that week. Best speakers emerged from our ranks, rising head-and-shoulders above the rest as they demonstrated excellent arguing skills, in each of their particular speeches: • Hena Gordhan (Pay beaches for Durban, Superheroes, and most promising speaker in our Inter-house Public Speaking) • Kian Rama (Inter-house Public Speaking) We are very pleased with the calibre of debaters being produced at GPS. We wish all our Grade 7s who are moving on to high school the best of luck in their debating careers in the future. And to all of our present Grade 6s and future debaters, we are enthusiastically looking forward to next year’s league with great anticipation!

MORNINGSIDE PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 031 303 2413 (e) mornpri@mweb.co.za Morningside ‘having a ball’ Morningside launched its third-term fundraiser this week. 700 Balls were scattered around the field and learners had to fetch as many balls as possible in a 10-minute time period. The balls were placed in a basket after each run and counted by a supervisory official at the close of each event. Unfortunately for the participants, they were restricted to one ball at a time and this resulted in a fair amount of running, and in some cases crawling,
especially during the latter stages of the event. The children could choose to give a donation or sponsor each ball that they collected during the ten-minute time limit. Most children enjoyed the event and seemed invigorated by the exercise as they battled to collect more balls than the groups competing against them.

WESTVILLE SENIOR PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 031 266 5218 (e) sharon@wsps.co.za Storytelling competition
Reading Quiz
Westville Senior Primary School is very proud of Zahra Dhooma (Grade 5), who was awarded first place at a storytelling competition hosted by Ethekwini Municipal Library Services. This is a particularly fine achievement, as Zahra had already won the initial round, at which she represented Westville Public Library, and then went on to compete against the winners from the other districts. Zahra told the classic story of The Jungle Book in Afrikaans, which is her second language, and was the overall winner in the Afrikaans category at this prestigious event. She is a conscientious learner who excels at academics. On the sportsfield, Zahra plays netball and hockey. She is also a very good swimmer, and is a member of our school’s A swimming team. Her favourite stroke is butterfly. Zahra enjoys arts and crafts such as mosaics and pottery, and she likes to participate in our school’s Annual Speech and Drama Festival. She has a pet tortoise named Speedy, and her role model is Chad le Clos.
Azra Ally (Grade 7) participated in the District 9 Reading Quiz at Westville North Library as the representative for Ethekwini Library (Westville) on 3 August. There were ten contestants, each representing a municipal library. Azra was the winner at this competition, and went through to the final round on 5 September, at which the winners from each district competed for the champion’s trophy. Azra was placed second out of 18 participants. We are very proud of her achievement!
General Knowledge Quiz Our Grade 6 learners participated in a General Knowledge Quiz at Kearsney College and were placed third out of 18 teams. Well done to these children on their wonderful achievement!

Charity drive for SPCA On behalf of our furry friends and the SPCA, Westville Senior Primary School would like to thank all parents and learners who donated items of cat or dog food or dog blankets, or made a cash donation during our third term charity drive. The wonderful staff at the Kloof SPCA play a critical role in the Highway community, and the dedication and passion they have for serving the community aligns strongly with the value that Westville Senior Primary School places on service.

NORTHLANDS GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL (t) 031 571 1100 (e) marketing@nghs.co.za Arts & Culture opportunities celebrated What originally started as an idea in the Drama Department evolved into a full-blown festival and celebration of the Arts at the Northlands Girls’ High School (NGHS) Culture Collision on 16 September. Mrs Amy Barnard, Dramatic Arts educator at NGHS, first presented the idea of the Culture Collision as a “rotating showcase of the cultural activities on offer at the school.” The morning included performances by the school’s Visual Arts, Dramatic Arts, Music and dance learners. When they were not enjoying the performances, visitors were invited to spend some time in the tea garden, manned by the school’s Consumer Studies Department, or they could visit one of the 30 stalls at the cultural fair. “I never would have imagined my idea to develop into such a fabulous morning and I am very proud of what we presented,” says Mrs Barnard. Mrs Vanessa Andreou, head of the Culture Portfolio at NGHS, said everybody’s hard work paid off and it was an honour to show the community “what wonderful opportunities we have to offer to our pupils.” Grade 11 Mocktail stall FRONT: Amahle Mthimkulu. NGHS pupil applauded for bringing colour to art Find or imagine something that is bursting with colour and show it to us in an artwork. This was the directive given to pupils interested in participating in the Santam Child Art Competition this year. More than 4 200 learners from all over the country followed this directive and ultimately, Ayesha Bux, a Grade 9 pupil at NGHS was one of the very few artists whose work was selected to feature in the Santam Child online exhibition. The Santam Child Art Competition aims to offer a platform for learners to express their thoughts and ideas in a creative manner. Mrs Jolan Adeline, Visual Arts educator at NGHS, said Ayesha really embraced the opportunity and made the school
proud. “She is quite introverted, but she has evolved into a silent wonder – her artwork continues to impress.” According to Ms Cherie Josephs, Corporate Social Investment Co-ordinator at Santam, the Santam Child Art online exhibition will be uploaded on the Santam website during the first quarter of 2018.
