CURRO HERITAGE HOUSE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL Eskom Expo 2021 Results Curro Heritage House High School Team 2021 - We wish to congratulate Antara Moodley [Learner Curro Heritage House - High School] in grade 9 on achieving a Bronze Medal in this prestigious annual competition and also Nathan Kerdachi [Learner - Curro Heritage House - High School] in grade 8 for his Highly Commended project. My project was based on the question of whether plants can purify the toxic fumes in the air, by observing the changes in a flower’s health whilst near the exhaust of a car. And although unsuccessful, there is still a possibility for it to work, as I only used one type of plant species - the nemesia flower. I thank all that helped me with my project, including my parents and teachers, and I am grateful for this achievement. Thank you. I started looking for a simple idea that would help improve our lives. I have done a lot of research and concluded that pedestrian safety is a huge concern within South Africa. I have designed a solution that will help people to cross roads safely and save many lives in South Africa. Through investigation I identified that pedestrians are not pressing the pedestrian button before trying to cross the road; they are therefore crossing when the traffic pedestrian signal is red which is very dangerous. With the current Covid-19 pandemic people are hesitant to press the button when crossing. People also don’t remember to press the button when crossing. I came up with this idea by walking around in my house and noticed that an infrared alarm motion sensor can detect movement within multiple grid zones due to temperature; so why can’t we use that in a traffic signal box to detect the pedestrians within that area and that detection could then be used to change the colour of the traffic light. This invention would also benefit people with disabilities such as the blind.

Over the weekend of 3-5 September, three of our talented St Henry’s Marist College Junior debaters participated in the Junior KwaZuluNatal Provincial Debating Tournament. Kamalika Moodley (Grade 9), Jenna de Klerk (Grade 9) and Jack Binder (Grade 9) represented the Durban Coastal Debating League in the KZN tournament. Kamalika, Jenna and Jack were assigned to various teams, where they were tasked to work with other selected debaters from various schools in the Durban Coastal district. Throughout the tournament, the students were pushed to further their skills in persuasive rhetoric and successful oral delivery, while ensuring that their ability to logically progress sound arguments was strengthened. Each team participated in five rounds over the course of the weekend. While they were given the themes for the topic areas before the commencement of the tournament - human interaction in space; International Monetary Fund - they were only given their specific topics on the day of the debate, when they then had to band together with their new district teams to construct a cohesive, well-built and logically sound case moments before competing against their oppositions. For the final rounds of the tournament, the teams participated in blind debates where their skills, teamwork, intelligence and composure were really put to the test.
Jack Binder
Kamalika, Jenna and Jack each saw admirable successes throughout the weekend-long tournament. They were all a part of winning teams, made invaluable contributions to their successful debates and saw incredible growth in their confidence and abilities. We commend these three exceptional students on their selection to represent the Durban Coastal Debating League in the Junior KZN Provincial Tournament, for having the bravery to partake in such a daunting and highly competitive arena, for their individual and team achievements, and for their exceptional time-management skills, as this tournament was held in the midst of their Trial examinations! We congratulate Kamalika Moodley on her outstanding accomplishments in the tournament. Kamalika was awarded a KZN Top 10 Speaker prize for her exceptional skill in argumentation and delivery. Further, Kamalika has been selected to represent the KZN team as they progress to the National tournament at the end of the year. We have no doubt that she will see great success at Nationals! Well done to these phenomenal young debaters! Their successes are unparalleled and the culture of excellence that they have created in the SHMC Junior Debating team is a testament to their formidable determination and competitive spirits. Keep pushing; keep inspiring!

GLENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL Hopper Cup
Prefects 2022
The hype and excitement ran high as the boys prepared for their last crack at the title, winner of the u.14 Hopper Cup. The first match of the day was contested between the Kudus and the Cowboys. Both teams needed a 4-try victory to be in contention for the Cup. It was test match rugby all the way with both teams giving their all to get the 4 tries and the victory. With less than 5 minutes to go the match was tied at 17-17. But it was the Kudus that managed to break the defensive line one more time and score the winning try to win 24-17. Kuhle Hadebe, from the Cowboys, managed to get his second Man of the Match trophy in the Hopper Cup. The final match of the Hopper Cup was between the tabletopping Makulus and bottom of the table Zambucks. This match, strangely enough, tells the same story as the previous match. The first half was closely contested with both teams “getting over the white chalk”. It was the second half that saw the Makulus run in two unanswered tries to win 24-17. Mvelo Ndwalane’s sheer pace earned him the Man of the Match award as his team went on to win the Inaugural Hopper Cup. Mr Erik Aissing, Chairman of the Old Boys’ Association and Governing Body Sport, handed over the Hopper Cup to the winning captain, Daniel Aissing. Glenwood High School would like to thank @threshhold_sa for the beautiful Cup which they have sponsored for the champions. A big thank you to Mr & Mrs Van Wijk for the Man of the Match trophies and the medals for the winning team which they have sponsored.
The first prefects for 2022 were announced at assembly, 16 September 2021. We wish these boys best of luck as role models to all students, as well as mentors to the junior boys. We are sure these boys will maintain an atmosphere of friendly cooperation while focusing on instilling the core values which are found on our pillars.
Congratulations to Sandile Nzuza, Jeandre van der Walt, Bandile Mahlaba, Eyolle Okole and Frederick Marx.
Art Exhibition The annual Glenwood Matric Art Exhibition officially opened on Wednesday 15 September 2021 in the Media Centre. Daemien will study graphic art at @vegaschoolofficial next year. Mr Nicholas Tyler, the newly appointed Director of Marketing and Head Prefect 2000 was the guest speaker at this event. We congratulate the boys on an excellent exhibition.

DURBAN HIGH SCHOOL Daniel Bennett ranked FIRST in South Africa! Grade 10 scholar, Daniel Bennett recently participated in the 2021 David Suddards Trophy tournament. The David Suddards Trophy Tournament is limited to 44 lowest handicap golfers in Kwazulu-natal. In the Open Division, Daniel was just 3 strokes off the winner finishing in 5th Place. This performance of Daniel is phenomenal baring in mind that he is only 16 years old! This result places Daniel at 3rd position in the KZN Golf Open points ranking system. Daniel is currently placed 21st in South Africa for the Open Rankings, 5th in South Africa for the u.19 Rankings and FIRST in South Africa for u.17. These continuous stellar performances have cemented Daniel’s place in the RSA Golf National Squad.
Rugby Despite the season being canceled early due to Covid there were some phenomenal results. Our u.14A and u.15A both enjoyed victories over Maritzburg College and Hilton. Our u.16A suffered a heart-breaking 10-13 loss to College, but bounced back a week later with a convincing win over Hilton at Hilton. 4 of our u.16A players were selected for the Grant Khomo u.16A Natal team, whilst 6 of the u.16A were selected for the u.16B Natal Team.

Hockey U14A Our u.14A Hockey Team is ranked 1st in South Africa. “The u.14 School Hockey Rankings for Boys in 2021 has an interesting look to it as more schools begin to take hockey seriously as a sport. DHS reach their highest ranking in any of their sporting codes as they slot in at the top spot on the table and are so far unbeaten this year. DHS have been in incredible form so far this season brushing aside all their strong KZN opposition including the hockey powerhouse Maritzburg College. They were forced to share the spoils with Hilton College on their last outing but certainly look like the form team at the moment.” https://saschoolsports.co.za/hockey-u14-school-hockey.../

Craven Week u.18
Water Polo report 17/18 September Friday evening saw the official and full return of Summer Sport after a somewhat depleted year. Maritzburg College arrived at the Chad Le Clos Pool to take on the Westville Griffins in much anticipated fixtures from U14 through to 1st Team, playing under lights. The u.14A and u.15B kicked off the fixtures with the boys having copious amounts of fun in the pool regardless of rustiness and results. Not a single face had anything but a smile with Westville winning both games 11 – 3 and 10 – 1 respectively. Jumping in the pool next, the WBHS u.15A side followed suit of their other teams and pulled out a stellar performance, winning 15-1 with nearly every boys on the scoresheet. As the rain came down, the 2nd sides took to the pool. Both sides showing some rust and lack of fitness, final score 5 – 5. The 1st Team boys had the run of the full sized pool for the final game of the evening. WBHS opened up the scoring in the early stages of the game through SA u.20 player Blake Holmes. The Olympic standard size pool slowed the game down, but some clever rotations from the Westville 1st Team Coach, Brad Rowe, WBHS pulled through with well worked 11 – 2 win. Westville won 4 out of 5 games, with one draw. A confident group of Westville Boys and coaches took to the pool against Northwood on Saturday morning after commanding the Friday night performances against rivals, Maritzburg College. The new boys to water polo, the u.14A sides, thrashed it out first in the pool with some good counter attack goals from Westville and power shooting by Northwood, Westville swimming away with a 13 – 4 win in the end. The u.15A game was indeed tighter and less fluid with both teams focused on structure rather than win-at-allcosts. The Westville boys defended in unison limiting Northwood to just a single goal, while scoring some pearlers themselves. Final score

WBHS 8 – 1 Northwood. The WBHS 2nds were somewhat under self-imposed pressure after being the only team not to record a ‘W’ on the Friday night. The Northwood side played with exceptional structure and discipline but could unfortunately not convert their chances. The WBHS 2nd side coming out of a physical battle victorious winning 4 – 2. A titanic battled then ensued. A somewhat lethargic WBHS 1st side took on a Northwood team who arrived with every intention to win. Northwood were hot out the blocks racing to a 0 – 3 lead at the end of the first chukka, with the Westville side unable to string a decent attack together, with the help of a seemingly impenetrable goalkeeping force in the Northwood goals. WBHS slowly clawed their way back into the game with a couple goals in both the second and the third chukka’s while managing to restrict Northwood to just one each in return. The Westville Boys grinded their way through the last quarter coming out eventual winners, 9 – 5, a great display of character and resilience to overcome a 0 – 3 1st chukka. A dominating weekend of Westville Water Polo leading up to the ever prestigious Clifton Tournament this week. We at Westville wish all three schools from the weekend the best of luck for the tournament.

Snell Society 2021-2022 B Block Boys are elected to the Snell Society chiefly on the basis of academic prowess and present an address to other members and, indeed, to any boy in the school who would like to be challenged to think “outside the box” on a series of topics. We particularly encourage those who are TARPS to attend Snell Society meetings, though it is only the Snell Society who are able to pose questions to the presenters at the end of their addresses. This Sunday, members will have the opportunity to hear addresses from two boys: Ben Frost will be making a plea for more aggressive taxation of the super-rich and James Asherson will suggest that a continuation of capital punishment in some societies and a return to it in others deserves consideration. We look forward to hearing their views.
The President’s Award The President’s Award grew out of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and has been created specifically for South African pupils. It is a prestigious award, reflecting a range of talents, skills and service and we are delighted to announce that Anthony Turner and Alexander Brits have achieved a Gold Award with Freddie Waller attaining a Silver Award this year.

WATERFALL COLLEGE Steaming Ahead This term, the ground floor of Waterfall College’s new STEAM Centre was put to good use for Accounting, Business Studies, Mathematics and IT. This facility is the latest in the Waterfall Schools development plan and would not have been possible without the school’s non-profit partner, Focus on iThemba, and the support of the Victor Daitz Foundation and others who share the school’s belief in the life-changing power of quality education. The Life Sciences room and the Art Studio were opened on Friday, 10 September, with Matric students doing their final practicals in these rooms. “We are so excited that the Grade 12s, who wrote exams earlier this year with the noise of construction, have been able to benefit by using the new block for a few weeks,” says Mrs Edwards, Head of Life Sciences. “The Grade 10 Life Science class helped move everything into the lab and have been helping to set up apparatus and bring the room to life with plants and a vivarium,” Mrs Edwards continues. “Our leopard gecko – HELIX – will come back to school next term
after a stint with one of our students and Mrs Baker has donated a fish tank for the lab.” “The Grade 10 and 11 Physical Sciences students have been eagerly moving the equipment into our new lab,” says Mrs Goodrick. “We will be able to have lessons in the lab starting next term, and all of the science students from Grade 8 to 12 are excited to be in a new space where we will have state-of-the-art equipment to ‘blow stuff up’.” Waterfall Schools is a complete educational pathway, from 12 months to Grade 12, where connection is key – between teacher, student and parents, with nature and with God. Set on the bright and spacious iThemba Campus in Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal, this trio of small, co-educational independent schools is founded on Christian principles and brings together a rich heritage of learning with innovative thinking and a focus on community upliftment. www.waterfallschools.co.za
