UP AND COMING SPORTS STAR
Be AWSUM. Read AWSUM.
Budding journalist Joshua Hedley took a few moments to interview one of our sports stars, Grade 10 pupil, Estiaan Terblanche (Right): There are many sports offered by Beaconhurst High School and one of those sports is swimming. Estiaan says that he has had a passion for the water ever since he was a toddler, but only started officially when he was 10 years old. Estiaan is also a Biathlete but stays mainly focused on swimming because he has tough goals that he has set for himself. “I have a scroll and halfcolours”, said Estiaan, “by the end of this year I hope that I will have achieved full colours.” He also said that he has support from many people such as friends, family and his coach. When asked if he planned to go pro he replied; “Yes I intend to go pro but I think that I would have to put in more hours of dedication and after I finish school I will be able to do that.”

DID YOU KNOW?
Known as nature’s candy, wild raspberries have been gathered for consumption by humans for thousands of years. With their rich color, sweet juicy taste and antioxidant power, it is no wonder raspberries remain one of the world’s most consumed berries. Raspberries can range in color from the popular red and black varieties to purple, yellow or golden. Each color berry has a unique composition of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
needs for the day as well as lesser amounts of thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B-6, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and copper. Raspberries contain the antioxidants alpha and beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and choline.
Eating one cup of raw raspberries will provide 54% of your vitamin C needs, 12% of vitamin K, 6% of folate, 5% of vitamin E, iron, and potassium, and 41% of manganese
Raspberries are also a powerful source of polyphenols such as anthocyanin, flavonols and ellagitannins, which decrease oxidative damage from free radicals and have shown potential in animal and human studies for preventing or reducing risk of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

HUDSON IS GOLDEN Hudson Park Primary School has been a Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (WESSA) Eco School with Green Flag status. The Eco-Schools Programme is an international programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and is active in 51 countries around the world. Last year the Hudson Park’s Eco Club took part in many projects. They supported the community by helping charities. They also went to the zoo and many other outings.
The Eco Club grew their own vegetable garden and donated the food to local charities. They also participated in a drama showcase raising money and collecting pet food for East London Animal Welfare. They collected OMO and Skip Liquid caps to stand a chance at winning a JoJo tank for the school. They also drew posters about saving water and electricity. These have allowed our school to progress to the next status (Gold Award) of which we are very proud.
