Gareth Cliff
Gareth Cliff is a South African radio and television personality, best known for hosting a weekday breakfast show on 5FM and a judge on the reality show Idols. Gareth studied Law, Politics and History and everybody knows he has bold opinions that he shares with his listeners and on Twitter. People’s Choice Crystal Award for Favourite Radio Personality, Kids Favourite TV Presenter and Favourite Radio Presenter, to name a few of the awards he gathered the last couple of years. In 2014 Gareth launched CliffCentral Radio, taking traditional radio to online and mobile. AWSUM News caught up with him to asked him a few questions. We have to start off by asking where were you in primary and high school? Laddsworth Primary School in Hilton and Sutherland High School in Pretoria. What are the best memories you have from your school days? I made lifelong friends, developed a passion for learning and blew things up in the science lab. Who is the biggest influence on your life and what were the life lessons you learned from them? I would say, my parents. They taught me so much about doing what I love, making a difference and achieving my dreams. Tell us about your inspirational career, where and how did it start? It started at University, on campus radio - that led me into commercial radio, television and now my own business at CliffCentral.com After all the success, how do you keep your feet on the ground? I have a great business partner and Manager, Rina, who has kept me very level-headed - my friends and family also think I’m fairly normal. Can you tell us something we don’t know about you? Yes, I design flags and coats of arms. What makes you really happy? Sleeping late, reading a new book, listening to a new song, meeting interesting people. What do you see as success? Making a meaningful contribution to society and living a life that gives me, the people I care about and those I can create opportunities for, happy. What do you still want to achieve in your career? I’d like to take some of what we do International. I’d also like to design and realise some great building projects. Do you see love, marriage and children in your future? Perhaps. If you could go back to high school, what would you do differently? Anything you want to tell the 16-year-old Gareth? Don’t take life too seriously. Listen more, talk less and laugh as much as you can. Any advice you can give to our AWSUM fans in school that want to follow a radio career? I think radio is dying out. The Internet offers exciting prospects for anyone who has ideas, wants to explore content or add value. Go there.

Hudson Park Founders’ Day
Sporttoer 2018
One day is set aside to commemorate the many teachers, pupils and friends of the school who have contributed to the founding of the Hudson Park Schools. The present generation pays tribute to its heritage and draws inspiration to approach the future purposefully. This year, we celebrated Hudson Park turning 113 years old. During the main assembly we had approximately 2500 people in attendance including learners from Grade 1 to 12 as well as staff, Old Hudsonians and guests. The learners thoroughly enjoyed having Akona Ndungane, former Springbok Rugby player, as the guest of honour. Thank you to all the Old Hudsonians that traveled from various places within South Africa as well as abroad.

Selborne scrums cancer A special assembly was held at Selborne College today, Friday 24 August 2018, to facilitate the handing over of funds raised on the “Selborne Scrums Cancer” day, on the weekend of the Grey High School Derby. This initiative started in 2017, with Parents, Old Selbornians, Staff, Boys and Selborne Interact Club raising funds for cancer. The beneficiary of this project is CHOC, which is an incredible organisation that serves and supports the children, parents, families and communities who are affected by this life threatening disease. A cheque to the value of R 250,000.00 was handed to Mrs Kleinenberg (Regional Manager CHOC Eastern Cape), by the Chairman of the organising committee, Mr Peter McLoughlin and Mr Andrew Dewar (Headmaster of Selborne College). Lilyfontein wishes their matric Interactors farewell The following Lilyfontein Interactors have been members for 2 to 5 years, showing dedication, leadership, commitment and epitomises the Interact motto – “Service before Self”. The president, Matthew Barnard, presented each matric with a rose and a box of chocolates as appreciation for their years of service. An Interact Induction Dinner was held on the 2 August 2018 and was hosted by the outgoing board. The evening was a great success and an opportunity to applaud the busy and successful year. A large sum of money was raised by the club and visits were made to Canaan Care Centre (our core Charity), and Hope School. Collections were made for CHOC, Helping Those in Need and Jersey Week. The CEO School Sleep out was supported by 110 learners and staff who slept out in cardboard boxes and experienced firsthand what it is like to be a homeless person for one night. The club also collected 156 packets of sanitary pads to enable girls from underprivileged areas to be able to come to school every day. The Lilyfontein Interact Club was chartered in 2004 and is sponsored by Rotary Club of Gonubie. Our MOTTO is #JustServe.
Foundation Phase Concert The Beaconhurst Foundation Phase held a concert over the evenings of the 15th and 16th of August. The theme of our concert was, “Teacher’s on Parade”, each class performed a song which was relevant to each teacher in the foundation phase. We had a wide variety of songs ranging from ‘supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’, Brenda Fassie’s “Wedding Day” to the Afrikaans song ‘Ry Perd.’ The children were extremely excited about the concert and after performing a dress rehearsal for the rest of the school the rest of the school was just as excited. The concert was a great success and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thank you to those who helped support us through this very fun yet stressful time. Fun was had by all.
