Katlego Maboe Growing up in the town of Potchefstroom, Katlego Maboe completed his school years at Potchefstroom Central School and Potch Boys High, matriculating in 2004. Throughout his life, Katlego has been very active and his love for singing has manifested itself in his involvement in the well known South African acapella boyband, Flip a Coin, as one of the group’s lead vocalists and beat-boxers. One of the qualities that have to lead to his successes is his ability to communicate with people from all walks of life, a skill that is enhanced by the fact that Katlego is fully tri-lingual in English, Afrikaans and Setswana.
Which school did you attend? I started primary school at Tsepho Primary School in Potchefstroom, then during my Grade 4 year I transferred to Potchefstroom Central School and then to Potch Boys’ High. I was always that ambitious kid. I remember once, during an assembly at Tsepho Primary, we were all asked what we wanted to be when we grew up, and I stood front row with my hand in the air saying I wanted to be a scientist! Not that I knew what a scientist was, but I had heard the word in one of the TV programmes that I watched. Changing over to Potchefstroom Central School was very different from Tsepho Primary School. It was a place I very quickly had to establish my own space and decide what I wanted to achieve in my life. I tried to make my family proud because I understood that they had made significant sacrifices for me to be there. I wanted to do my best in athletic competitions, cultural competitions, academic competitions. What is your best memory of high school? That would probably be being chosen for the U/17 Provincial Cricket team and going to East London for the National Provincial Cricket Week. I was quite a keen sportsman, especially in cricket. Another highlight in my school career was being part of the North West Youth Choir, in particular, the European trip that we took in Grade 11. I was fortunate enough to get a sponsorship from one of the parents. I think that trip opened my eyes to a world of possibilities, and I believed that anything was possible as long as I worked hard enough.
The host of the popular SABC3 early morning show Expresso, and the much-loved Strictly Come Dancing South Africa (season 7 and 8), this Cape Town-based TV presenter, singer, voice-over artist, MC, model and actor is undoubtedly making his mark in the South African media industry. AWSUM got to know him better.
What were you like in high school? I was the nerd type of kid, and I was never friends with the “cool kids”! I kept to myself and kept to my books because I wanted to do well academically. I never tried to associate myself with the cool kids, I had very few friends. We all had similar ambitions, for instance, me and my friend Steven, would challenge each other on the cricket field to see who could go further even though we had different disciplines. How would your teachers have described you? I was a nerd, but I certainly wasn’t quiet! I was usually the one that asked a lot of questions, so I imagine I probably annoyed a lot of my teachers! But I think they would describe me as a disciplined learner. I hardly ever gave any trouble in class and I was always too scared of getting detention because firstly that means an entire Friday gone and secondly that would mean going home to very strict grandparents that wanted to know why I got detention in the first place.

When you think about a fork in the road in your life, what was it and why did you choose that path? I think that would have to be when I was registering for my first year of university and I had to choose between studying music or pursuing a career in accountancy. Music has always been a big passion of mine but I thought perhaps the accountancy would fit me best in terms of what the economic faculty offered. I think that was a major decision for me, because had I chosen my immediate passion I would have been in a very different place in my life. I ended up choosing accounting, reluctantly, because I wanted something solid behind my name. I think it was a good decision to have studied accounting. It certainly boosted my confidence and put a certain measure of value to what you do. What advice would you give your 16-year-old self? I’d say to invest more time on the things you really enjoy doing. Like for instance, when I played cricket and managed to do well with the required amount of practice, I could have been better at it if I invested more time. Who knows where it could’ve taken me and the same applies to everything else. But you know as a 16-year-old there always seems to be more important things to do. What is the best thing about being a dad? I think it’s the unconditional love you receive and that you have created someone that will forever remember you as “Mom and Dad”. I think through all the laughter and smiling, he (our son) teaches us as adults that we forgotten the most important aspects of life. What does a typical Sunday look like for you and your family? We usually sleep in on Sundays, and being commandeered around by a 6-month-old! Sometimes we haved brunch with friends, but usually we just relax and get ready for the week ahead. Best road trip of your life? Without a doubt The Garden Route! It was an enjoyable time seeing some of the country’s most beautiful parts. What amazes you most about society nowadays? I think it’s amazing that a lot of enlightened young people are trying to find themselves in positions and careers that will be for the betterment of other people’s lives as opposed to making money. For instance, I was watching this documentary called “Insta-Famous” and one of the guys they were profiling is a surfer with a passion for photography and he takes these cool images of waves crashing. He turned his passion into a career, which I think should be the motivation for any career choice.

Creamy Mac ‘n Cheese SERVES 2 Ingredients • 2 jumbo Nulaid eggs • 125 ml grated cheese (your choice) • 2 rashers bacon, diced • 45 ml cornflour • 250 ml milk • 250 ml cooked and seasoned macaroni, drained • 1 extra bacon rasher, very crisply grilled and finely chopped (optional) Method In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs, stir in the cheese and set aside. In a pan, cook the bacon in its own fat until crisp. Mix the corn flour with a little cold water into a thin paste and whisk into the milk (using the quantity cornflour suggested will give you a thick sauce; if you want it thinner, use 30 ml cornflour). Pour the mixture over the bacon and stir rapidly until thickened. Now whisk a few large spoons of the milky sauce to the egg and cheese mixture and then pour in the rest. Whisk well and return the lot to the saucepan. Stir continuously over medium heat until the cheese has melted and the eggs have cooked and thickened the sauce slightly more. Be careful of high heat or overcooking – you may end up with globs of scrambled egg amongst the macaroni. Finally, add the cooked, well-drained macaroni and stir just until the mac is hot then serve topped with the optional fine bacon bits. www.nulaid.co.za/kids_corner_recipes.php#creamymacncheese
