Food extraordinaire | Entrepreneur | Author
A pioneer in her field, Siba Mtongana has put Africa on the map in the world of culinary stardom. This international multi award-winning culinary expert, author and entrepreneur has built a global influence reaching over 130 countries. Siba has brought the art of food to millions of homes around the world with her cooking show Siba’s Table on Food Network. She is also a recipient of the prestigious Ubuntu Awards 2018 from the South African government for her contribution of being a pioneering global ambassador of the country in her field. Feeding not just bodies, but spirits and souls, Siba is a woman of influence who has levelled up South Africa’s food and entertainment industry. While Siba is the first African to win a Prestige Award for the impact of her cookbook My Table, in South Africa published by The Siba Co, she is also the Global Ambassador of the international organisation, Rise Against Hunger, taking transformative steps to feed the hungry globally with love. AWSUM asked her a few questions: We have to start off by asking about your school career, where did you matriculate? I matriculated high school from Alphendale High School in the Eastern Cape. What did you like about school? I loved maths, science and accountancy in school, and I did really well in each of them, my mom actually thought I would grow up to be an accountant or lawyer, sorry mom! I have also always had a very curious mind, and school was the perfect place to satisfy my curiosity. What did you dislike about school? While it is most certainly more common in the schooling system nowadays, I felt and still feel that the system is far too standardised and based on old principals. Many children with diverse skill sets are not given the opportunity to explore their talents at a young age and to develop the skills which they most likely choose to use in their careers later in life. I wish that I had been apart of a more progressive and forward-thinking schooling system, I have seen hints of it in my children’s schooling, so while we are not there just yet we are moving closer. I also did not have much career guidance at school which made it very difficult to choose subjects which would form the foundation for my future career. My advice to students who do not have access to career guidance is to consult family members, and do not be afraid to reach out to people you respect and are doing well in the industry you see yourself in. What would your teachers say about you? I was the eager beaver in class, that girl sitting in the front with her hand up ready to ask the teacher a question. I hope my teachers would describe me as hardworking, intelligent and curious. Please tell us about your childhood and family? I was blessed with the most wonderful childhood. I grew up in East London, in a Christian home which was filled to the brim, with eight siblings, two parents and a whole lot of love. My mother was a teacher and my father was a supervisor in leather goods manufacturing company. I came from a traditional family of hard workers and from an environment where anything was seen as being possible if you worked hard enough for it. When and how did your love for food developed? From a very young age, my mom taught me to have a deep appreciation for good quality produce, which more often than not came from her garden. We would help mama in the kitchen, by foraging for beautiful produce and prepping the ingredients for her. It took a few short years until my cooking skills were trusted, and evening meals become my responsibility. I have my mom to thank for being such a great, patient teacher and for encouraging us to explore and be creative. We never used to cook from a cookbook, it came from the soul. The passion was there, all I needed to do was harness the skill set and knowledge through formal education. I enrolled at CPUT, and obtained my Degree in Food and Consumer Sciences, Majoring in Food Science and Nutrition. My studies are really the foundation of my success and I strongly advise students to look at furthering your education, as I have done.

AWSUM NEWS NOVEMBER 2018
High Schools: Beaconhurst, Lilyfontein, Clarendon, Hudson Park, Grens, Sterling, Port Rex, Cambridge, Selborne College. AWSUM News is published by the TieMedia Group, Jock de Villiers Office Building, 376 Main Road, Paarl, 7646. 021 000 1705 www.awsum.co.za
You are a mother of four beautiful children, what is your recipe for managing your career, husband and children? It isn’t easy, I’ll tell you that. I have learnt to put strong support systems in place, be it an extra nanny or au pair at home, or trusted employees in the office. My sisters and my church family are so important to me, they definitely create a sense of harmony and spiritual grounding in my life. Then I have my husband, Brian, who is my greatest support system, both physically and emotionally. My message here is that it comes down to deciding that you want to succeed in each respective area of your life, being 100% unapologetic, and finding ways to make it work, gone are the days of us woman having just one job, and I am so happy about that. What’s your easy quick go-to meal you always make your family? I am a big fan of pan sheet dinners and leftovers for lunch. I love the idea of throwing gorgeous ingredients together in one pan sheet, it caters well for mass, its fuss-free and the clean-up is always simple. My cookbook is a great place to find these Sibalicious recipes, which you can easily find at Woolworths and Exclusive Books. What do you see as success? Success in my mind is having a very clear vision of where you want to go, combined with a rock-solid plan on how to get there, and then pushing as hard as you can to get there. The most successful people in life are not the ones who got there the first time but rather the individuals that got up time and time again and refused to accept defeat. Success to me is not being willing to accept defeat and it’s seeing that bit of progress every single day no matter how big or small. That being said, no plan will take its course unless we believe in ourselves, my message to students is to crush that self-doubt, remove the negativity from your mind and know that you are capable of so much more than you even believe. Any advice you can give to our AWSUM fans in school that want to follow a food career? Build a solid base through your education. My Passion is a great driver, but you need to back it with a core skill set and knowledge. Put yourself in the best possible position to find the job you want, furthering your education is the best way to do this! This industry is not for the weak or for those who are seeking fame, the hours are long, the output is intense, and the environment is highly competitive. If you don’t have a thick skin or aren’t ready to develop one, this industry is not for you. Do lots of research before you commit to something so that once you are in the game, you can give it your all. This is a wonderful industry to be in now a days, and we have so many options available to us, BUT the work needs to be done, long before the rewards are seen! What is your vision for 2019? I am so excited for 2019, it’s going to be a big year for me personally and for my business, The Siba Co. We have been working quietly in the background and will see these boundary-breaking projects come to life in the new year. I hope to continue to work on creating harmony and good balance in each aspect of my life, and to thrive in each. I hope my first Cookbook continues to fly off of shelves, I am hoping to treat fans to some exciting new content, be it on screens, on social media or in print, I have also been inundated with request for merchandise ranges, another book and so much more… all I can say for now is that I am listening! I can’t wait to share more with you….

Too ghoul for school Cambridge Primary School’s Intermediate and Senior Phase learners enjoyed a spook-tastic Halloween this year. Grade Fours dressed up as the undead, witches and other creatures of the night. The Grade Five to Sevens attended an exciting Halloween Disco complete with dress up and ghoulish fun. Halloween was certainly a fun time for all.
The tricky obstacles during the Big Walk added to the excitement.
Reading challenge The grade 1 learners were challenged to read 25 books in Term 3. The following learners were such eager book worms, they all achieved this wonderful goal. Well done! After all the tiresome walking, it was time for some colour fun! We wonder who had the most fun , children or teachers?
Earth and Beyond in Natural Sciences
Learners who brought in over R500 could challenge their teachers. Some had to dress up, others were taped to a wall and a lucky few were pushed into the pool.
Grade Fours at Cambridge Primary have been studying about the Earth and Beyond in Natural Sciences. As part of the curriculum they built and experimented with rockets.

HUDSON PARK HIGH
(t) 043 726 3205 (e) office@hphsco.za
Seating for the Gibson Kente Theatre at Hudson Park Thank you for your ongoing support of Hudson Park! We value your contributions immensely and hope you will consider helping us to complete an exciting theatre project which is currently underway. It is the brainchild of our high school’s Head of Drama, Pierre Perold, whom many of our past pupils will remember from their time at Hudson. He tells the story: Four years ago, we applied to LOTTO for funding to build a theatre at our school, to be named after the distinguished East London born playwright, Gibson Kente (1932 - 2014). Kente, or ‘Bra Gib’, is a legend in theatrical circles. He is known as the Father of Township Drama in South Africa, and he is renowned for his major role in trying to address the injustices of apartheid, through the medium of drama. He is also recognized for his work as a composer, director, and producer.
Page 6
His family readily gave permission for the naming, and Hudson Park is the first institution to have honoured this great man in such a way. So far, it is also the only one. Generous funding from LOTTO has enabled us to build the theatre. Work is nearing completion, and we are now awaiting our final payment from LOTTO, which we anticipate will cover carpeting and lighting. The reason for our approach to the community is that, unfortunately, we do not yet have funds for seating, though we are optimistic that donors will come forward to help us to raise the money we still need. After extensive research, we have established that the most appropriate and affordable theatre chairs cost R2,200 each. The theatre can accommodate 260 seats, and this puts our cost for seating at around R500,000.
AWSUM NEWS NOVEMBER 2018
Though it seems high, our target is attainable, if 1,000 people are willing to donate R500 each. Persons who donate R500, or more, will have their names printed on an honours board in the foyer of the theatre. In addition to this acknowledgement, our donors will know that they are partnering with us in making a wonderful facility available to our community. We see the Gibson Kente Theatre becoming an extremely important venue and cultural centre in East London, with special benefits for Hudson Park learners and the disadvantaged learners we nurture in our Outreach programme. Said Mzwandile Ngoqo, who is the son of the playwright: “When Pierre showed me the theatre I was close to tears. It was a goosebump experience. It is very fitting that the first theatre to be called after my dad should be in East London.”
