Rolene Strauss is the beauty pageant titleholder of Miss South Africa 2014 and was later crowned Miss World 2014. Rolene is the third South African to be crowned Miss World. In 2017 she has officially graduated as a medical docter, but further more she is a mother, wife, business woman, mentor and humanitarian. AWSUM asked her a few questions.

You grew up in Volksrust in Mpumalanga, please tell us about your childhood and your hometown. I grew up in a very protected environment. My parents raised me and my brother to believe that we can achieve absolutely anything we put our minds to. Our environment and our parents insured for a little naivety, but I wouldn’t have changed it for the world. We had a rule in the house; we don’t play inside while the sun is still out. I remember multiple times where my mom had to literally catch us to bring us inside for a bath. I am so grateful for my childhood and get really emotional thinking that various children don’t get to grow up as carefree as I did. What school did you attend? I attended Pionier Primary School and Volksrust High School in Volksrust. What did you like about school? I strongly believe that the fact that I went to school in a ‘small town’ helped me cope in the ‘adult life’. Because we were quite small, the learners had to participate in most of the school activities. I remember playing first team hockey and netball, doing athletics, participating in the debating competitions, being CSV leader, head girl and focussing on academics to ensure I get accepted to study medicine. This taught me how to manage my time and work for what I wanted to achieve in life. How would you describe yourself as a teenager? I remember spending days on my best friend’s family farm climbing mountains, building clay houses, milking cows, playing in the maize silo’s and nurturing small birds. I absolutely love nature and was fortunate to have a wonderful care-free childhood. My friends and I even planned a petition to vote off the ‘always wear school shoes’ rule in high school. If you can go back in time, what would you tell the 16-year-old Rolene? The opportunities will come, your responsibility is to be ready for them. Your dad is a doctor and your mom a nurse, when and why did you decide to follow in their footsteps? I can’t remember a certain day or year I decided to become a doctor. It was just what it was. I was born with it. My nickname was ‘Little Dr Strauss’ as I visited my dad’s patients with him and held their hands when he operated or did anything nerve-wracking according to them. I saw the way he was loved and appreciated and my dad has been my hero ever since. You took a break from your medical studies for two years to fulfill your duties as Miss South Africa and then Miss World 2014, why did you decide to go back to studying medicine in 2016? I wouldn’t have been Rolene if I didn’t complete my studies. It is an integral part of who I am and I also believe in finishing what you have started. Did you find it difficult to go back to studying after all the fame and travel? It was definitely an adjustment as I was in a different year group who didn’t know me as Rolene but as former Miss World. I also got married the year I went back to studying, fell pregnant and gave birth to our son in January of my final year. Some of the patients also recognised me, which turned into a few awkward moments, but the University of the Free State was very supporting, my fellow students were amazing, and I enjoyed my last two years of studying thoroughly.

AWSUM NEWS OCTOBER 2018

High Schools: Beaconhurst, Lilyfontein, Clarendon, Hudson Park, Grens, Sterling, Port Rex. AWSUM News is published by the TieMedia Group, Jock de Villiers Office Building, 376 Main Road, Paarl, 7646. 021 000 1705 www.awsum.co.za

What is your biggest dream at the moment? What would you really like to achieve professionally? I would like to be known as a great wife and mother who always put her family first and as a woman who did everything she put her mind to with absolute dedication, to the best of her ability and honouring God through it all. Two projects I am currently spending most of my time on are RevitaHealth (a health orientated organisation I opened on the 1st of October with my sister in law Dr Ledivia Strauss) and a spoken word album which will be released end of this year. What’s your best advice for teenage girls to be healthy and happy and to deal with body-image issues? Our motto at RevitaHealth is: “Be Yourself but be the Your Best Self”. It is about being the best version of yourself. It is not about what you look like, but how healthy you are from the inside out. Do not compare. I know it is easier said than done, I must remind myself of these things every single day. Focus on your health and the rest will follow. You tied the knot with D’Niel Strauss late in 2016 and was blessed with a baby boy in 2017. How do you find married life and motherhood? I find it absolutely exhilarating, humbling and sometimes challenging. The best thing about being a wife and a mother is forgetting about my own obstacles and focusing on nurturing the ones I love most in the whole wide world. This puts everything into perspective to me. As long as my loved ones are safe and healthy, nothing else can be too difficult to handle. What is less pleasant about beauty pageants? Beauty pageants are, believe it or not, a mind game. You can’t really change your physical appearance or the judges. They either like you or they don’t. That is not in your hands. The most challenging part is what goes on in your mind. Are you comparing yourself to the others? Are you breaking yourself down emotionally? The most I have ever grown emotionally was during the Miss South Africa and Miss World competitions. You have to become your best self and know yourself inside out for you to really enjoy the experience. That is what the judges will see and appreciate. How do you handle the fame and attention that comes your way? I see it as a privilege and a wonderful opportunity to have a positive influence on the lives of others. What makes your heart beat faster? Every time our (very busy) son runs an inch past the corner of a table, jumps off chairs without any warning or calls me “Mamma” and gives me a kiss. What are your hobbies? Spending quality time with my family, playing golf, exercising and listening to audio books. What song or band is playing in your car at the moment? My husband and I listen to audio books while we drive, the one playing in my car at the moment is “The Richest Man in Babylon” by George Samuel Clason. Genesis 2:18 “It is not good for a man to be alone”
