AWSUMCelebrity Interview Leandie du Randt is an actress, presenter, MC, motivational speaker and author of the self-help book Comfortable In Your Own Skin. She is well-known for her roles in soapies such as Binnelanders and Getroud met Rugby and films such as Semi-Soet and Klein Karoo. She has won numerous acting awards over the years, and was runner-up in Season 7 of Strictly Come Dancing South Africa. We caught up with her to chat about the new blockbuster, Jagveld, to be released in movie theatres in March, and life in general. Q: Jagveld, the movie adaption of yet another Deon Meyer bestseller, sees you in the lead role as Emma le Roux. The film centres around Emma seeing a murder and the killers hunting her down as she flees. Emma, however, is the daughter of recce Jacques le Roux, who taught her everything he knows. Nothing about this hunt goes right and it becomes about survival of the fittest. Tell us about how this role was different. What were the challenges? What did it mean to you as actress? A: All I am allowed to say now is that I looooved this role and this film is a must-see from 17 March 2017 – definitely a first for SA! Q: What was the highlight(s) of your career this far? A: One of them is being able to tour to 60 different towns with my self-help book and motivational talk, #NoOneCanBeatYouAtBeingYou in 2016. Another one is being able to play an action role in Jagveld, opening on 17 March 2017. Q: What is your biggest dream at the moment? What would you really like to achieve professionally? A: I would love to play in international productions where the budgets allow you to train for months for a role before you film, and to do my motivational talks internationally. Q: Which professional actor/actress is your role model? Why? A: I have many role models for different parts of my life and career and it depends in what phase I am in my life. But I love Kate Hudson, Alicia Vikander and Nina Dobrev. Q: You studied Industrial Psychology – in fact, you excelled, with two degrees cum laude! How did you end up in the entertainment industry? A: Thank you. I won Miss Personality in my first year pagaent and the prize was Brümilda van Rensburg’s drama course. She trained me and connected me to the right people and opportunities and then, because God is able to do anything, that all synchronized. Q: You came second in Season 7 of Strictly Come Dancing South Africa. What was this experience like? What did you learn? What did you enjoy most? A: It changed my life. I realised that no matter how old you are, you can always learn a new skill and achieve something if you really work hard and believe it in your heart. I loved it so much to work hard and see results. My mind also grew stronger through all that stress and pressure on live TV. I am forever grateful for that great experience and to my dance partner, Brandon Eilers le Riche. and his beautiful wife, Natalie, who coached me, and my husband, Bouwer Bosch, who supported me mentally, physically and emotionally. You realise how much people’s support mean in that competition and it humbles you immensely.

Q: You self-help book for teens, Comfortable In Your Own Skin, became a bestseller. What inspired you to write this book? What did you hope to achieve? Would this book’s advice have been helpful to you as a teenager? A: I would hope that it would be helpful for me if I was a teenager. I wrote it to inspire girls to be themselves in a time where we get brainwashed to conform and look and be a certain way. Don’t compare yourself to anyone, because you are you and no one can beat you at being you – so focus on that and treasure that. Q: What’s your best advice for teenage girls to be healthy and happy and to deal with bodyimage issues? A: Live a balanced life. Get healthier by eating clean and get exercise – don’t focus on being skinny, but to be healthy physically and to be the best version of you outwardly, but most importantly inwardly. It doesn’t matter that you look like a goddess if your heart is aching and dirty – then that outward appearance is gonna fade and not be so rewarding as you thought. It starts in the mind – what you think you become, so think grateful thoughts and believe that anything is possible. Try and live healthy 80% of the time and indulge 20% of the time. All of us have different bodies and shapes, so don’t try and look like someone else – you will never succeed in that; try and look the best that you know you can. This is no competition, because no one is you. Q:Tell us about your childhood and where you grew up. A: I grew up in a small town, Makwassie, till I was nine and we moved to Kempton Park. I am very fortunate to have grown up in a loving and supporting home and family. My father is a reverend, my mom used to be a teacher and my brother is a CA. My mother passed away in 2014. Bless her lovely soul. Q: You tied the knot with Afrikaans singer Bouwer Bosch late in 2015 with an abandoned factory as the perfect backdrop to the fairytale wedding. How has married life been? A: All I can say is that I am so grateful to be married to my best friend. Q: What is in the pipeline for 2017? A: Lots of talks again, and films – and in this world anything is possible, so let’s see!

PORT REX TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL Staff Pro Gro From Saturday 14th to Sunday 15th January 2017, the staff of Port Rex Technical High School attended a Professional Growth weekend at Cefani Mouth Resort. The theme for the weekend was “Professionalism ”. We discussed this theme with regards to our academics, sport, cultural activities and professionalism in general. A braai was held on Saturday evening which allowed us to relax after the exercise of the afternoon, and spend time socialising with our colleagues. On Sunday morning, each bungalow was in charge of cooking one type of food, which we then enjoyed during a “travelling breakfast.” After our delicious meal, we enjoyed a 4km beach walk from Cefani to Cintsa. As a staff, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and gained new and valuable knowledge which can be put to use.
Waterpolo Tournament Port Rex THS hosted a Waterpolo Tournament on 20 to 21 January 2017 to kick off 2017. This tournament was well supported by schools in the Border area. We congratulate Stirling High School on winning the tournament.

Grade 8 orientation camp Port Rex held their annual Grade 8 Orientation camp from 13 to 14 January 2017. Armed with black bags and carrying their weekend kit, they began with the traditional beach cleanup, which covered a 15 kilometer stretch of the Wild Coast from the Glen Eden River mouth to the Cefani River mouth. After arriving at their destination the prefects took charge as the exhausted newcomers were taught the traditions and values of their new school through a number of activities that involved games and boisterous singing of their new school song in the dunes. Mr Terblanche, this year’s Grade 8 head, likened the new learners to a box of gems – some may be diamonds and rubies while others are still a little rough, but they are all valuable once they have earned their place in the jewelry box.

Candle Lighting Ceremony
Prefect launch
One of the very special traditions at Hudson Park is the ‘Candle Lighting Ceremony’ which signifies the culmination and highlight of our annual Grade 8 Orientation Week Programme. The powerful symbolism of the lantern as the source of the flame for the lighting of the candles held by each Grade 8 by the prefects is magnificent in the darkness of the hall. The speed and efficiency in the lighting of all of the candles represents the light of knowledge and the expression of the talents that flow from the Grade 8s into their legacy at the school. The power of teamwork is also evident. Mr Richard Rees (legendary ex-Primary and High School teacher) has played a significant role in this awe-inspiring ceremony for over 30 years.

Valentine’s
Day
Bubbles to celebrate your Valentine ...
It’s no coincidence that the popping of Champagne corks is synonymous with having fun – our bodies are hardwired to love bubbles! Unaware of this, the 17th century winemakers in the Champagne region of France, amongst them Benedictine monk Dom Pérignon, were trying to get rid of the bubbles in their wine. One of the reasons was that as the wine fermented, it released carbon dioxide gas which, when trapped in the fragile bottles of the time, caused them to explode. Ironically, it was the British who developed a taste for the French bubbly wine, establishing a market for the sparkling version of Champagne. The contention that bubbles are better – which spans cultures – has endured. Why? After nearly 250 years, it can’t just be the novelty of fizz. Part of the reason is that the bubbles bring to the surface the flavour and aroma of the drink – but scientists now think there’s another reason why bubbles equal pleasure: they’ve found an enzyme on the sour receptors of our tongues. The bubbles stimulate the sour buds and the somatosensory system. The dual activation on the buds and the nerves creates a pleasurable sensation. Even though Dom Pérignon may have disagreed, the fact is that for most people, bubbles just are better!!
