Jean de Villiers was South Africa’s 54th Springbok captain and an important leader for South African Rugby. In 2014 Jean became the 5th player to reach 100 Test caps for the Springboks and was named the SA Rugby player of the year twice (2008 and 2013). He retired from rugby in 2016 and left behind a phenomenal legacy. The former Springbok captain is still involved in rugby as a SuperSport analyst. AWSUM caught up with him to ask a few questions.

You attended Paarl Gymnasium High School. How did it influence your rugby career? I grew up in a house where rugby always been relevant. Since I was a boy I wanted to go play rugby and Paarl Gim exposed me to rugby. The fact that I could have played on such a big platform like interschools between Paarl Gim and Paarl Boys’ High it prepared me for bigger platforms as a professional rugby player. Everything had a huge impact on my rugby, especially the coaching I received from a young age. Describe the experience to play against Paarl Boys’ High in the biggest Interschools match in the world. I think every year everything builds up to interschools and the fact that it is important. I always had a great pride to play in an interschools match and to play a great game. I was privileged enough to only lost one game against Paarl Boys’ High in my whole school career. And that is definitely something I am proud of. Tell us a bit about your family and upbringing? My dad also played for WP rugby and at my house, a lot of rugby people came to visit. I really can’t think of a time in my life where rugby wasn’t present. I was privileged to play first team for Paarl Gim, Cravenweek and SA 19’s with my brother in the same year. My mom is also very active, she was a teacher at La Rochelle High school which mean we spend a lot of time on La Rochelle’s sports fields. My whole family is sports enthusiasts. When did you decide to become a professional rugby player? I don’t think it is really a decision you make, it’s more like a privilege you receive in a moment in your life and the passion to play need to be there. I always hoped to play for South Africa before rugby became a professional sport. I was privileged to receive a contract from WP rugby in my matric year. Basically, I was a professional rugby player for the last few months of my matric year. What was it like to play in the World Cup tournament? I am so privileged to been chosen for four World Cups. Unfortunately, World Cups turned out a bit sad for me due to injuries. The World Cup is the biggest platform a player can participate in. To lead the Springboks in 2015 was a big highlight for me and to be part of the 2007 team who won the World Cup, that is something, not a lot of people experienced. What was less pleasant about your rugby career, apart from injuries? I think injuries are the main thing and then missing out on your families life. Especially not to be there for the milestones in your children’s lives, and that I did not finish my university degree.

AWSUM NEWS JULY 2018

How did you handle the fame and attention that came your way as a high profile player? It is difficult, the important thing is to never see yourself as someone important or more important than somebody else and always handle people with respect. In my case, the fame started slowly and then it got bigger and bigger, and with that, you grew as a person as well. I don’t think a person is defined according to who and what the are, but rather how they treat people with respect. Always treat people with respect and hopefully you will receive it back. Tell us a bit about your life after rugby and working on TV? Supersport is a great way to still be part of rugby without the pressure. I really enjoy it. Rugby is absolutely my passion, but I made the decision to do something else. I am working full time for Citadel Wealth Management and Supersport is only something I do on the side. The reality is your rugby career will finish and you still have a very long life left after rugby. I was privileged enough to receive an opportunity to build a new career. What other sports do you enjoy playing? I swam provincially from the age of 7 to 16. I was captain of the first cricket team. I tried everything but I prefer the team sports and rugby heve been the one that always stood out. What is your wish for Springbok rugby? That the Springboks will be number one again, isn’t everyone’s dream to be number one. And that the people will be proud of SA rugby. Sometimes people are very negative about rugby. I think we take rugby too seriously. What was the highlight of your career thus far? Definitely reaching 100 tests, that is very special. My 101 test was at Nuweland, where I learned to play rugby. I walked out on the field with my two daughters. We played against Australia and I scored two tries and won the game. My wife was there, pregnant with our boy and my parents, my brother and friends were also there. It was a combination of everything I love together on one day. What are your future career dreams? What is the one thing you would really like to achieve? To be successful in my life after rugby. To be a good father and husband to my wife, and then to make a difference in peoples’ lives. I think the responsibility lay with every South African to make SA a better place.

Chopping board Cutting knife and fork Garlic cruncher Pot Can opener Metering cups Wooden spoon Dishing Spoon Rolling pin 2 Baking trays cloths pizza cutter

What do you need?

15 ml margarine or butter 1 chopped onion 1 garlic clove 1 can chopped tomatoes 3 ml origanum 2 ml salt 1 pinch of pepper 250 g white bread dough 250 ml grated mozzarella cheese 125ml chopped ham 250ml pineapple pieces

Make the pizza

Make the tomato sauce

Make the Pizza base

1 Turn the oven plate on medium. Put the pot on the warm plate and let the margarine melt. 2 Mix the onion and garlic with the butter until soft 3 Add the tomatoes and let it boil. Then turn the oven down to low heat and let it cook for 15-20min. 4 Add the origanum and let it cook for 3-5 minutes. Add salt and pepper according to taste and turn the oven off.

1 Turn the dough out on the working surface and cut in 2 pieces 2 Throw flour on a clean surface and roll one of the 2 dough pieces. Use the rolling pin up and down until it forms a round flat pizza base. 3 Throw a bit of flour on the baking tray and place the pizza base on the baking tray. 4 Make the second pizza base the same way (from step 2-3).

1 Turn the oven to 220 °C (425 °F). 2 Dish a small layer of tomato sauce on the pizza base. Keep the outside of the pizza clean. 3 Throw the cheese, ham and pineapple on the base. 4 When the oven is hot enough, bake the pizza for 10-15 min 5 Carefully open the oven and stand a bit back from the steam. 6 Use the cloth to take out the baking tray and put the tray on a wooden surface. 7 Use a flat knife to loosen the pizza from the tray and let it slide onto a wooden surface. With the pizza cutter cut the pizza. 8 Do the same with the second pizza and turn of the oven.
